Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (the Steam version's last official news was a 2021 sale). Classic game; no balance patches expected.

Quick Start
- You can start at any stage you've unlocked, but playing from Cell gives your species its full set of consequence traits and a coherent story.
- Your playstyle in each stage matters. Aggressive, peaceful, or mixed play earns a "consequence trait" that gives a bonus ability in later stages.
- The creature editor is the heart of the game. Every new part you find adds options; experiment freely.
- In Creature stage, collect parts. Skeletons, eggs, and fallen creatures drop parts. Look for them everywhere.
- Save often. Spore autosaves at stage transitions, but it has memory limits and occasional crashes on long saves.
- Space is the long game. Most of your playtime will be in Space; the first four stages are shorter.
- Use Sporepedia content to fill your universe with other players' creations, or turn it off for a purely offline experience.
- Galactic Adventures is the expansion to get if you want more to do in Space.
Stage-by-Stage Guide
Cell Stage
- Diet decides everything here. Eat meat (Carnivore), plants (Herbivore), or both (Omnivore). Your mouth parts decide what you can eat.
- Collect parts by eating and exploring; parts include spikes, poison, jet movement, and electric shocks.
- Stay small at first. Big cells will eat you; move up the food chain as you grow.
- Progress by filling the evolution bar. When it fills, your cell grows a brain; choose to advance and the creature editor opens so you can add legs before heading onto land.
- Your diet carries over. Whatever mouth you end the stage with sets whether your creature starts as a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore.
Creature Stage
- Social or aggressive. You can befriend species (sing, dance, charm, pose) or hunt them. Befriending adds allies; hunting unlocks predator traits.
- Nests are your home and respawn point; the pack follows you.
- DNA points buy new parts in the editor. You earn DNA by eating, socializing, hunting, and evolving.
- Epic creatures are giant, dangerous creatures. Avoid them early.
- Brain upgrades progress the stage. When your brain is ready, you move to Tribal.
Tribal Stage
- Your tribe gathers food, builds huts, and fights or befriends five rival tribes.
- Tools (instruments, weapons, gathering tools) are built in your village.
- Friendly path: play music, give gifts, and befriend other tribes.
- Aggressive path: raid and destroy rival tribes.
- Food is everything. Keep a steady supply to grow your tribe.
Civilization Stage
- You manage cities, vehicles, and spice. Cities can be military, economic, or religious.
- Military: conquer cities with land, sea, and air vehicles.
- Economic: grow through trade and buy out cities; economic vehicles carry no weapons, so protect them.
- Religious: convert cities with missionary vehicles and broadcasts.
- You can mix approaches as you capture cities of other types, and the balance you finish with feeds into your Space archetype.
- Spice is your money. Capture spice geysers early; they fund everything.
- Win the planet to launch into Space.
Space Stage
This is where Spore opens up:
- Your spaceship explores a galaxy of roughly 100,000 stars and around 500,000 planets (per Wikipedia), including a hidden Earth.
- Missions from your homeworld and allies earn money, tools, and badges.
- Badges unlock new tools and ship upgrades.
- Spice is the core economy. Colonize planets to harvest it, then sell it at trading posts.
- Alien empires can be allied or fought. Relations depend on your actions and on missions you complete.
- The Grox rule a huge empire near the galactic core. Reaching the core is the "main quest," which rewards the Staff of Life and a meeting with "Steve."
Consequence Traits and Archetypes
At the end of each of the first four stages, the game looks at how you played and awards a consequence trait (aggressive, peaceful, or mixed). The combination of those traits, especially your Civilization style, sets your Space archetype, which grants unique abilities and changes how other empires react to you.
Archetype | General flavour
Warrior | Aggressive military empire
Knight | Honourable, military but principled
Zealot | Aggressive religious empire
Shaman | Spiritual, nature-oriented
Scientist | Research-focused
Trader | Economy-focused
Diplomat | Peacemaker
Ecologist | Nature and planet-focused
Bard | Entertainer
Wanderer | Mixed playstyle across stages
Each archetype has its own special ability (for example, powerful weapons for aggressive archetypes or diplomatic tools for peaceful ones). Check the in-game description when you arrive in Space.
Space Stage Strategy
Early Space
- Do the tutorial missions from your homeworld. They give tools and money.
- Colonize nearby planets that already support life, or terraform them.
- Buy a defense for your colonies (planetary defenses and turrets) if you have aggressive neighbours.
Terraforming
- Planets have a terraform score (T-score) that controls how many colonies a planet can support.
- Use atmosphere and temperature tools to change a planet's climate, then add plants and animals to build a stable ecosystem.
- Higher T-scores mean more cities and more spice.
Economy
- Spice types vary by planet; rarer spices sell for more.
- Trade routes with allied empires boost profits.
- Keep money in reserve for repairs and emergencies (raids on your colonies).
Reaching the Galactic Core
- The Grox guard the core. Their empire covers about 2,400 star systems surrounding it and is hostile to almost everyone.
- There are two broad approaches: ally with the Grox (a long, difficult diplomatic path that other empires may not appreciate) or fight or sneak through their territory with a well-upgraded ship.
- You'll need upgraded engines, lots of health and energy storage, and a plan (either peaceful diplomacy or combat).
- The trip is long; bring repair packs and energy packs.
Expansions and Packs
Content | What it adds
Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack (2008) | New creature parts (including insect legs) and animations
Spore Galactic Adventures (23 June 2009) | Beam your captain down onto planets for adventures, captain outfitter, and an adventure creator for building and sharing custom missions
Galactic Adventures is the most substantial addition, especially for Space stage players.
Modern PC Tips
- EA began selling Spore on Steam without SecuROM on 22 December 2008; GOG also sells a DRM-free version.
- Spore is a 32-bit game and can run out of memory with lots of creations; save often and restart after long sessions.
- The community Spore ModAPI Launcher Kit is the standard tool for installing modern mods and fixes.
- If Sporepedia downloads fail, the game still works offline; your own creations remain available.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping stages without thinking about archetype. Your choices matter for Space.
- Over-expanding in Space too early. Colonies need defense and money.
- Ignoring spice economics. Spice funds everything.
- Neglecting terraforming. More colonies mean more income.
- Picking fights with the Grox early. They're the strongest empire in the game.
- Not saving. Long Space sessions can crash.
Advanced Tips
- Plan your archetype. Decide how you want to play Space before Cell, and stay consistent.
- Collect rare artifacts in Space for money and badges.
- Use the Sporepedia to find new creatures, vehicles, and buildings to use in your game.
- Build colonies in dense star clusters so your empire is easy to defend.
- Galactic Adventures adds adventures that earn captain points; use them to upgrade your captain.
FAQ

Is Galactic Adventures worth it? Yes, if you enjoy Space. It adds adventures, a captain editor, and new flora.
Does Spore still have DRM? Not on Steam. EA began selling it there without SecuROM on 22 December 2008.
Is Sporepedia still online? It has historically worked for sharing content, but availability can vary. The game works offline regardless.
Can I mod Spore? Yes. The Spore ModAPI Launcher Kit is the most common tool.
