A practical companion for Owlcat's giant Pathfinder CRPG: difficulty and combat-mode choices, character creation that won't trap you, Mythic Path requirements (the most missable part of the game), companions, the crusade layer, buffs that beat demons, and the full DLC lineup.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Enhanced Edition with all DLC released through A Dance of Masks (June 13, 2024); no new DLC has been announced since. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a difficulty you'll enjoy. Story, Normal, Core, Daring and Unfair (plus custom) exist. Core follows the tabletop rules; Normal is a comfortable default for newcomers; custom lets you fine-tune.
- Switch combat modes freely. Real-time with pause and turn-based can be toggled at any time — use turn-based for boss fights and RTwP for trash.
- Use a pregen or a simple build for your first run. Pathfinder 1e is deep; a straightforward class (e.g., Paladin, Cleric, Sorcerer) is safer than multiclass experiments.
- Buffs are everything. Pre-buff before hard fights; many encounters are balanced around it.
- Demons have damage reduction. Cold iron and good-aligned weapons matter.
- Rest when needed. Many abilities recharge only on rest.
- Mythic Paths are chosen at Mythic Rank 3 — and some depend on choices made earlier. Read the section below before playing far.
- Don't sweat the crusade. You can set it to auto-resolve in the difficulty settings if you'd rather focus on the party story.
Combat Basics
Stats and core concepts
- AC (armor class): how hard you are to hit.
- Saving throws: Fortitude, Reflex and Will — resisting spells and effects.
- Spell Resistance (SR): some enemies resist magic.
- Damage Reduction (DR): many demons ignore part of your damage unless you use cold iron or good-aligned weapons.
- Attacks of Opportunity punish moving past enemies.
Key defensive buffs
Buff | Why it matters
Protection from Evil (Communal) | Protects against mind control from evil casters
Freedom of Movement | Prevents grapples and paralysis
Death Ward | Protects from death effects and negative levels
See Invisibility / True Seeing | Lets you see invisible enemies
Heroism / Greater Heroism | Bonuses to attacks and saves
Remove Fear / Mind Blank | Protects from fear and mind effects
Many late-game enemies cast powerful debuffs; stacking buffs before fights prevents wipes.
Character Creation
- 25 classes, 12 races (store).
- Stat priorities: Focus on your class's key stats (e.g., Strength for martial characters, Charisma for Sorcerers/Paladins, Wisdom for Clerics/Druids, Intelligence for Wizards).
- Beginner-friendly classes:
- Paladin — strong offense (Smite Evil) and defense.
- Cleric — healing and buffs.
- Sorcerer — powerful spellcasting with simple management.
- Oracle — flexible divine caster.
- Avoid early over-multiclassing unless you know the ruleset well.
Mythic Paths
You choose a Mythic Path at Mythic Rank 3. Some are unlocked by earlier actions.
Primary paths (Mythic Rank 3)
Path | Key requirement
Angel | Pick up the angel's sword in the underground ruins where you first meet Lann and Wenduag
Demon | Touch the demonic energy in the Shield Maze, near the exit where the cultists and kidnapped mongrels are; contact it again when you first lead the crusade army into the Worldwound
Azata | Save all missing Desnan adepts in the Starward Gaze quest, then sing with them
Aeon | Observe where the dragon was slain in the Market Square; when you decide what to do with the wardstone, pick the Aeon option or you're locked out
Trickster | Pretend to be a superior of cultists in the Blackwing Library and make them fight each other
Lich | Return the wand from Leper's Smile to Zacharius in the Lost Chapel underground
Advanced paths (Mythic Rank 8)
Path | Key requirement
Gold Dragon | Collect Terendelev's scale and her claw (the claw is on a damaged wagon in the Leper's Smile cave), travel to Terendelev's Lair and complete The Dragon's Fate; later steps follow in Act 3
Swarm-That-Walks | A multi-step chain: don't take the queen on the crusade, collect a bug goop sample, find the nascent vescavor queen (without killing it) and complete the related crusade project — follow a step-by-step guide, as it's easy to break
Legend | Available automatically at Mythic Rank 8 without specific requirements
Late path (Mythic Rank 9)
- Devil — only some primary paths qualify (Fextralife lists Azata or Aeon). After you take Drezen, a devil named Melies appears at your court; follow that thread. Check the wiki for the full step list before committing.
Notes:
- Only the main character chooses a Mythic Path; companions get general mythic abilities.
- Paths have soft alignment restrictions; misalignment can trigger realignment quests.
- Choosing early dialogue options unlocks paths without locking you in.
Act 1 Missable Checklist
Almost every primary path is gated behind something you do (or skip) in Kenabres. Before leaving each area, make sure you've done the ones you might want:
Where | Do this | Keeps open
Underground ruins (prologue, with Lann and Wenduag) | Pick up the angel's sword | Angel
Leper's Smile cave | Take the wand; grab Terendelev's claw from the damaged wagon | Lich, Gold Dragon
Shield Maze exit | Touch the demonic energy | Demon
Market Square | Observe where the dragon was slain | Aeon
Starward Gaze quest | Save every missing Desnan adept, then sing with them | Azata
Blackwing Library | Pose as the cultists' superior and turn them on each other | Trickster
Lost Chapel | Return the Leper's Smile wand to Zacharius | Lich
Wardstone decision | Pick the Aeon option if you want Aeon | Aeon
Unlocking a path's requirement doesn't commit you to it — it only keeps the option on the table at Mythic Rank 3. Grab everything, then decide.
Build Archetypes That Work
Archetype | Example classes | Why it works | Watch out for
Holy warrior | Paladin | Smite Evil against a campaign full of demons; excellent saves from Charisma | Needs good-aligned choices to stay a Paladin
Divine support | Cleric, Oracle, Warpriest | Buffs, healing and strong self-sufficiency | Don't neglect offense — pick domains/revelations that add damage
Arcane blaster/controller | Sorcerer, Wizard, Arcanist | Crowd control and big area damage; Sorcerer is simpler to manage | Spell Resistance on many demons — take Spell Penetration feats
Martial striker | Fighter, Barbarian, Slayer, Magus | High, reliable damage; Magus mixes spells and weapons | Needs cold iron/good weapons against DR
Pet/summoner | Druid, Hunter, Shifter | Bodies on the field and flexible utility | Pets need gear and buffs too
Kineticist | Kineticist | Unlimited ranged blasts, strong in skilled hands | Burn management; less forgiving for new players
Stat rule of thumb: put your highest stat in the one your class uses to hit or cast, keep Constitution healthy, and dump what your class never uses — but not so hard that you fail every save.
Campaign Outline (spoiler-light)
- Prologue & Chapter 1 — Kenabres: The city is attacked; you survive underground, meet your first companions and gain mythic power. Most primary Mythic Path unlocks happen here (see the table above) — explore thoroughly.
- Chapter 2 — Drezen: You lead the crusade and take a fortress; the crusade management layer opens up.
- Chapter 3 — The crusade in the Worldwound: Army battles, crusade projects and an expanding cast of allies and enemies. The Swarm-That-Walks project steps live around here.
- Chapter 4 — Alushinyrra: An Abyssal city with its own intrigue; many companion quests peak here.
- Chapter 5 and the finale: Consequences of your mythic path and companion choices come due.
The game is long — plan for well over 100 hours on a completionist run.
Survival Checklist for Hard Fights
- Pre-buff: Protection from Evil (Communal), Freedom of Movement, Death Ward and your offensive buffs.
- Scout: Check enemy conditions and resistances with a knowledge skill before committing.
- Crowd control first: Stop casters and big threats with debuffs targeting their weak save.
- Right damage type: Cold iron and good-aligned damage against demons; bypass DR where you can.
- Turn-based if it's close: Precise positioning wins fights that RTwP loses.
Companions
Key companions include Seelah, Camellia, Lann, Wenduag, Arueshalae, Ember, Nenio, Sosiel, Daeran, Woljif, Regill, and Greybor. Some are tied to specific mythic paths or story choices. Earning their trust affects their outcomes and romances.
Crusade Mode
- Army management: Recruit units and assign generals.
- Tactical battles: Command armies on a battlefield.
- Crusade decrees and projects: Improve your forces and resources.
- Auto crusade option: If you prefer, the game can handle the crusade for you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping buffs before hard fights.
- Ignoring DR (cold iron, good-aligned weapons).
- Poor stat allocation or unfocused multiclassing.
- Missing mythic path requirements.
- Overextending without rest.
- Not using turn-based mode for tough encounters.
Advanced Tips
- Stack buffs and use scrolls/potions freely.
- Target weak saves — many enemies have one weak save.
- Use crowd control (e.g., Slow, Hold Monster).
- Plan mythic synergies (e.g., Angel with divine casters, Lich with necromancy).
- Use the Crusade auto option if you want to focus on the RPG.
- Save often — the game is long and complex.
