A full-arc guide to Path of Exile 2: picking a class and ascendancy, leveling through the campaign, how gems, Spirit and currency work, and what to do in the Atlas endgame under the current 0.5 content and the Forbidden Rites event.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 0.5.5 (Return of the Ancients content with the Runes of Aldur mechanic now core, plus the Forbidden Rites event that started September 4, 2026). PoE2 is still in Early Access with 1.0 announced for December 11, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Choose a league. Joining the current event/league gives you the fresh economy and the new mechanics. Standard is permanent but its economy is stale. Hardcore is one-life.
- Pick a strong, simple starter. Proven 0.5 league starters include Twister Spirit Walker, Ice Shot / Snipe Deadeye, Explosive Grenade Witchhunter, Spark Stormweaver and Grenade Ballista Warbringer (see the build table below).
- Dodge-roll is your best defense. Many boss attacks are telegraphed and fully avoidable with Space.
- Keep your resistances up. Aim for the 75% cap on Fire, Cold and Lightning by the endgame. Chaos resistance matters later.
- Don't use your Exalted and Divine Orbs on leveling gear. Use Transmutation, Augmentation and Regal Orbs on weapons while leveling, and save the rest for trading or the endgame.
- Upgrade your main skill's gem level. Uncut Skill Gems set a skill's level. Re-cut higher-level versions as you find them, because skill level is the biggest damage lever in the campaign.
- Do your Ascendancy trials as soon as you can. The first ascendancy points are one of the biggest power spikes in the campaign.
- Use the built-in tools. 0.5 added an in-game Build Planner, native item price checking, and an Atlas search box.
- Buy upgrades, don't just farm them. Trading (including the Currency Exchange) is the fastest way to fix a weak slot.
Classes and Ascendancies
PoE2 currently has eight base classes. Each unlocks ascendancies (subclasses) through the Trials.
Class | Main attributes | Typical weapons | Ascendancies
Warrior | Strength | Maces, shields | Titan, Warbringer, Smith of Kitava
Mercenary | Str / Dex | Crossbows | Witchhunter, Gemling Legionnaire, Tactician
Ranger | Dexterity | Bows | Deadeye, Pathfinder
Huntress | Dex / Str | Spears, bucklers | Amazon, Ritualist, Spirit Walker (new in 0.5)
Monk | Dex / Int | Quarterstaffs | Invoker, Acolyte of Chayula, Martial Artist (new in 0.5)
Sorceress | Intelligence | Staves, wands | Stormweaver, Chronomancer, Disciple of Varashta
Witch | Intelligence | Sceptres, wands | Infernalist, Blood Mage, Lich
Druid | Str / Int | Talismans, staves | Shaman, Oracle
Ascendancy lists change with patches, so check the in-game character screen for the current set.
New in 0.5
- Spirit Walker (Huntress): Three animal spirits (Stag, Bear, Owl), each tied to a notable with its own trigger and bonus. Allocate all three for Sacred Unity, which empowers every spirit. The Natural Order lets you use Tame Beast on unique beasts, and Idolatry gives bonuses from socketed Idols.
- Martial Artist (Monk): Channel to create mirages, spawn extra Bells, use the new Fists of Stone, and socket runes directly into your character through runic tattoos, plus Glove stat augmentation.
Core Systems
Gems and Spirit
- Skill gems come from Uncut Skill Gems. You pick the skill when you cut the gem, and the gem's level is fixed by the Uncut gem's level. Higher-level Uncut gems drop as you progress.
- Support gems come from Uncut Support Gems and socket into skill gems. Each support can generally only be used once across your character, so plan which skill gets which.
- Spirit is a resource reserved by persistent buffs, auras, minions and meta gems such as Cast on Critical. You gain Spirit from campaign quest rewards and from gear (sceptres, body armours, amulets).
- Runic Ward skills (0.5): Runes of Aldur added skill and support gems that consume Runic Ward instead of mana and have no attribute requirements, so any class can use them.
Passive tree
- One large shared tree. Your class decides where you start.
- You get passive points from leveling and from certain campaign quests. Don't skip quest rewards. Several campaign quests grant bonus passive points.
- Weapon set passives: You can assign some points to only apply with weapon set 1 or 2, which is useful for swapping between a clear setup and a boss setup.
- Respecs cost gold. That's cheap early and gets pricier later.
Defenses (what to stack)
Layer | Source | Notes
Life / Energy Shield | Gear, tree | Life for Str/Dex, ES for Int; hybrids exist
Resistances | Gear, charms, tree | Cap is 75% by default. The campaign applies resistance penalties as you progress, so check your character sheet after each act
Armour | Str gear | Reduces physical hits, especially smaller ones
Evasion | Dex gear | Chance to avoid attack hits
Block | Shields, bucklers | Very strong; Huntress parry and Warrior shields
Runic Ward | Runeforging (0.5) | An extra defensive pool added through Runeforging (check the in-game tooltip for exactly how it absorbs damage)
Currency basics
Currency | Main use
Orb of Transmutation | Normal item to Magic (1 mod)
Orb of Augmentation | Adds a mod to a Magic item
Regal Orb | Magic item to Rare
Orb of Alchemy | Normal item straight to Rare
Exalted Orb | Adds a mod to a Rare. The common trade currency
Chaos Orb | Replaces a random mod on a Rare
Divine Orb | Rerolls mod values. High-value trade currency
Orb of Annulment | Removes a random mod
Vaal Orb | Corrupts an item (unpredictable, can't be modified afterwards)
Gemcutter's Prism / Glassblower's Bauble | Gem quality / flask quality
Artificer's Orb | Adds a rune socket
Rule of thumb: Exalted Orbs are the everyday trade unit and Divine Orbs are for big purchases. Check the Currency Exchange for live ratios instead of trusting old tables.
Runeforging (Runes of Aldur, now core)
Introduced in 0.5 with Verisium and runes found at Ezomyte Remnants. Runeforging can add Runic Ward, replace defensive mods, add modifiers to Uniques, or upgrade low-level Uniques for big damage gains. A Runebook permanently tracks the rune combinations you've discovered. As of 0.5.5, Expedition content from Runes of Aldur (including Expedition Tablets in the endgame) is part of the core game and Standard.
Campaign Leveling
The campaign is Acts 1 to 4 plus three Interludes, followed by the Atlas endgame.
- Kill the boss, grab the waypoint, move on. Full-clearing every zone slows you down. Explore only for quest rewards and useful side areas.
- Always take permanent rewards: extra passive points, Spirit, and resistance or attribute bonuses.
- Trials for Ascendancy: The Trial of the Sekhemas (reached in Act 2) and Trial of Chaos (Act 3) grant ascendancy points. Your ascendancy unlocks when you finish your first trial. 0.5.5 overhauled the Trial of Chaos: you can pause and resume runs, each room ends in a reward chest, rewards are currency-only, runs go up to 30 rooms with scaling difficulty, and modifiers are simpler with explicit values.
- Use charms and flasks. Life and Mana flasks refill on kills. Charms react to specific threats like freeze or stun.
- Keep your weapon current. A fresh rare weapon usually matters more than any other upgrade while leveling. Check vendors every town visit.
- Forbidden Rites event (0.5.5): Every main campaign area has a Ritual encounter where you spend Tribute on rewards. In certain boss clusters, defeated bosses carry over into the next area, so you end up fighting several at once and pick a Unique from the rewards when you finish.
Endgame: The Atlas
After the campaign you move onto the Atlas of Worlds using Waystones (maps).
- Waystones have tiers. Completing maps drops higher tiers. Dying in a map costs experience, and you don't get unlimited retries, so play maps at a tier your character handles comfortably.
- Atlas Passive Tree (reworked in 0.5): Larger, and every node can eventually be allocated. Multiple-choice nodes let you tailor farming without constant respecs. 0.5.5 adjusted several nodes, including The Deadliest Hunt and Pandora's Box.
- Atlas Masters (0.5): Three masters with separate skill trees, one active per map and free to swap. Jado focuses on investigating currents for more Rares, Uniques or corrupted Waystone mods. Hilda is about hunting marked Uniques. Doryani is the third.
- Fortresses (0.5): Completing towers spawns huge Fortresses with enhanced areas. Map bosses inside grant Atlas passive points. In 0.5.5, defeating The Arbiter of Divinity with the non-quest version of the Origin Core completes the entire Precursor Fortress for the map owner.
- Pinnacle bosses include the Arbiter of Ash and Arbiter of Divinity, plus mechanic-specific pinnacles.
Endgame mechanics (0.5 versions)
Mechanic | What you do | Payoff
Expedition | Explore islands in the southeast Atlas; chain logbooks through Medved; meteor crashes lead to Olroth | Logbooks, bosses, new loot. Expedition Tablets are core as of 0.5.5
Abyss | Large connected Abysses span several maps; Abyssal Depths hold three faction bosses | Well of Souls key, then Kulemak. 0.5.5 added Large Abyssal Ravines with guaranteed bosses
Delirium | Questline in the western Atlas; Mirror Shards; Grand Mirrors chain maps with rising difficulty | Simulacrum, Notable amulets
Breach | Collect Hiveblood; spend Wombgifts in the Monastery of Flame's four trees | New bases and mods, Hive Fortresses, Xesht pinnacle
Ritual | Wildwood encounters; spend tribute on Uniques or Omens; King in the Mists chains five maps | Five simultaneous map bosses; the new Viridian Wildwood (via Sacred Bloom, 0.5.5)
Trial of Chaos | Ascendancy trial and endgame loop | Pause/resume runs, up to 30 rooms, currency reward chests (0.5.5)
Build Starters (0.5.x)
These have been widely recommended as 0.5 league starters. Balance changes in 0.5.1 to 0.5.5 may have shifted them, so check a current build guide for exact trees.
Build | Class / Ascendancy | Why it works | Notes
Twister | Huntress / Spirit Walker | The Owl spirit's projectile speed bonuses scale Twister cheaply | Strong clear on a small budget
Ice Shot / Snipe | Ranger / Deadeye | Deadeye's mirage can channel Snipe, so the clone takes the risk | Excellent pinnacle bossing when geared
Explosive Grenade / Storm Blast Bolts | Mercenary / Witchhunter | Grenades and crossbows kept their strength into 0.5 | Great mapping speed
Spark (with Orb of Storms) | Sorceress / Stormweaver | Screen-wide chaining clear | Transitions into Cast on Crit later
Grenade Ballista Totems | Warrior / Warbringer | Tested across patches; needs no uniques | Ancestral Bond rework improved its QoL
Stat priorities for most builds: Skill gem level and weapon damage (attacks) or +skill levels and cast speed (spells) first. Then capped resistances, then Life or ES, then damage multipliers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring resistances after the campaign penalties kick in. Elemental one-shots in maps are usually uncapped resists.
- Spreading supports across skills you don't use. Supports are limited, so put your best ones on your main damage skill.
- Crafting with Exalted and Divine Orbs on low-level items. Trade for gear instead.
- Running too-high Waystones too early. Deaths waste the map and experience. Build confidence and gear first.
- Skipping quest rewards for passive points and Spirit.
- Face-tanking bosses. Learn the telegraphs. Most dangerous slams and beams can be dodged.
- Following an outdated build guide. Make sure it's written for 0.5 or later.
Advanced Tips
- Weapon swap: Use weapon set 2 for a utility or boss setup, and assign passives per set.
- Price check before you vendor. Use the native price-check feature from 0.5. Rares with good base types, resistances and life can sell.
- Currency Exchange for bulk trades (currency, Omens, runes) without hunting down sellers.
- Plan your Atlas. Pick one or two mechanics that suit your build (for example, Breach for fast clear, Ritual for tanky builds) and put your Atlas tree and Master choice into them.
- Runeforge Uniques. Upgrading a cheap low-level Unique through Runeforging can make it a real endgame option.
- Build Planner: Plan your tree in-game before spending points, especially during respecs.
- Hardcore players: Keep a portal key and a bigger defense margin. Runic Ward is extra effective as a last-resort layer.
FAQ
Is Path of Exile 2 free to play? Not yet. Early Access requires buying an Early Access supporter pack. GGG has announced the full release for December 11, 2026, when the game becomes free to play. Full-release registration is open on the official site.
What's the current league? The 0.5 league launched May 29, 2026 with Runes of Aldur. Patch 0.5.5 (September 4, 2026) added the Forbidden Rites event, which puts Ritual encounters throughout the campaign.
What's the best class for beginners? Ranger (Deadeye) or Mercenary (Witchhunter) for safe ranged play, or Warrior (Warbringer) with totems for a sturdy, low-gear start. Spirit Walker Twister is a strong new option.
How many ascendancy points are there, and how do I get them? You earn them from the Trials (Sekhemas and Chaos) and later endgame trials. Your first ascendancy unlocks after your first trial.
What happens when I die in a map? You lose experience (not in the campaign), and the map attempt is lost. Play conservatively until your defenses are solid.
Should I play Standard or the new league? The new league. Its fresh economy and new content are where the community and trade activity are.
When is the next big update? 1.0 is announced for December 11, 2026. Watch the official site and forums for the reveal.
