A player's guide to the 2015 Need for Speed reboot on PC: setup and online requirements, how the five ways to earn reputation work, building a car that grips or drifts, dealing with the cops, and the Icon story beats.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content update (the free update series ended in 2016; still sold on Steam). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status check (September 2026): Need for Speed (2015) is still sold on Steam (appid 1262540, often at a deep discount) and still requires a permanent internet connection plus a linked EA account. EA's service updates page lists no shutdown for it, and the Steam page is still collecting a few hundred user reviews a month, so the servers are up and people are playing. The store's legal text says EA can retire online features with 30 days' notice posted at ea.com/service-updates. Because the game has no offline mode, it becomes unplayable if the servers go, so check that page before buying. The PC version launched on 15 March 2016, and the Steam release followed in June 2020.

Quick Start

  • It is always online and always night. You cannot pause, and Ventura Bay stays in its night/dawn setting. Park in a safe spot before walking away from the keyboard.
  • Reputation drives everything. You earn it through five play styles: Speed, Style, Build, Crew and Outlaw. Each unlocks story beats with a real-world Icon.
  • Pick your handling early. The tuning screen has a grip-to-drift slider plus detailed options. Build one car for grip races and one for drift events.
  • Money comes from events, not grinding cops. Do story events first; they pay well and unlock parts.
  • Upgrade performance before visuals. Engine, turbo and tyre upgrades make far more difference than body kits early.
  • Learn to drift properly. Tap the brake or handbrake to break traction, then feather throttle. Drift events and Style rep depend on it.
  • Cops escalate. Heat grows the longer a pursuit lasts; break line of sight and hide to escape.
  • Wheel and manual gearbox are supported. Manual transmission arrived in the free Hot Rods update (March 2016), which was already included when the PC version launched.
  • Play with the game's crew in mind. Other players share Ventura Bay; you can race them in the open world.
  • Deluxe perks are small. The Deluxe Edition's 10% in-game discount and starter car help early but are not essential.

Setting Up on PC

Topic | Notes

Accounts | EA account linked to Steam; EA's launcher must run in the background

Connection | Permanent internet connection required

OS | 64-bit Windows 7 or later per the Steam page (modern Windows 10/11 is what people actually run it on)

Minimum spec | Intel Core i3-4130, 6 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2 GB, 30 GB storage

Recommended spec | Intel Core i5-4690, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 970 4 GB, 30 GB storage

Frame rate | Unlocked frame rate and 4K supported on PC

Controllers | Gamepad and wheels (Logitech, Thrustmaster, Fanatec) supported

Manual gearbox | Added in the Hot Rods update (March 2016)

Tip: if the game fails to connect, restart EA's launcher and check that your EA account is linked; most launch problems are account/launcher related. The Steam page still mentions Origin, but the EA app has replaced it and does the same job.

The Five Ways to Play

Style | How you earn it | Icon

Speed | Winning races and time trials | Magnus Walker

Style | Drifting, near-misses, stylish driving | Ken Block

Build | Upgrading and customizing cars | Akira Nakai (RWB)

Crew | Playing with your crew and in multi-car events | Risky Devil

Outlaw | Police pursuits and trouble with the law | Shinichi Morohoshi

Each Icon has a storyline that you unlock by raising reputation in that style. Your crew hands out events and connects you with the Icons:

Crew member | Storyline they drive | Icon they chase

Spike | Speed | Magnus Walker

Manu | Style | Ken Block

Amy | Build | Akira Nakai

Robyn | Crew | Risky Devil

Travis | Outlaw | Shinichi Morohoshi

Reputation isn't locked to one event type: stylish driving earns Style points even during a race, for example. The achievement the achievement "That Perfect Moment" asks you to max all five scoring styles in a single moment. Your overall REP level is capped at 70 after the free updates.

Cars, Upgrades and Tuning

Performance upgrades

  • Upgrades are grouped by part (engine, turbo, exhaust, tyres, suspension, and so on). New parts unlock with story progress and reputation.
  • A car's performance rating tells you roughly what events it can compete in.
  • Buy the biggest power gains first, then handling parts.

Handling tuning

  • The quick slider moves the car between grip and drift behaviour.
  • Advanced tuning lets you adjust individual settings (steering sensitivity, brake bias, tyre pressure, downforce and similar). Small changes add up.
  • Save separate builds: a grip build for circuit/sprint races and a drift build for drift events and Style rep.

Drift basics

  • Approach the corner with speed.
  • Tap brake or handbrake while turning in to break traction.
  • Counter-steer and feather throttle to hold the angle.
  • Link corners to keep the multiplier going.

A drift-tuned rear-wheel-drive car makes this far easier than an all-wheel-drive grip build.

Visual customization

  • Body kits, wheels, wraps, decals and more. The Build style rewards heavy customization.
  • The wrap editor lets you create and share liveries.
  • Akira Nakai's RWB-style Porsche builds are part of the Build storyline.

Police and Heat

  • Police pursuits add Outlaw rep, but escalate the longer they go on.
  • To escape: break line of sight, get off main roads, and hide until the cooldown ends.
  • Avoid head-on collisions with roadblocks; aim for gaps or the lighter parts.
  • Crashes cost time and let the police close in, so drive clean when a pursuit is heating up.

Story and Progression Tips

  • Follow the story events in each Icon's line; they unlock parts and cars as well as rep.
  • Side events pay less but are good for tuning practice.
  • Two iconic cars unlock through progression rather than purchase: Ken Block's Hoonicorn and Morohoshi-san's Diablo. Getting either one into your garage unlocks "Fanboi", and winning events in both unlocks "Iconoclast".
  • Each Icon line ends with you becoming that style's Icon. Finishing all five leads to Ultimate Icon, the end of the main story.
  • The Outlaw line has a story twist ("Uncover the truth about the Outlaw"), so finish it if you want to see the whole plot.

Free update history

The game got five free content updates, and all of them came with the PC and Steam versions:

Update | Date (console) | What it added

Icons | 25 Nov 2015 | REP cap raised to 60, bonus cars, wrap editor improvements

Legends | 9 Dec 2015 | REP cap raised to 70, Eddie's challenge built around his 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Showcase | 3 Feb 2016 | Custom licence plates, wrap sharing

Hot Rods | 3 Mar 2016 | Drag races, manual transmission, garage expanded from 5 to 10 slots

SpeedLists | 27 Apr 2016 | Custom multiplayer SpeedList tournaments, Prestige mode

Because of these updates, the late game has more to do than the main story: drag races, Eddie's challenge, SpeedLists, Prestige events and daily challenges.

Late-game modes worth knowing

  • Eddie's challenge: a Legends-update event line featuring Eddie's Skyline from Need for Speed Underground. Win an event in Eddie's car for "Zero To Hero".
  • Drag races: from the Hot Rods update. Use manual gears and launch cleanly, and tune a separate car for them.
  • SpeedLists: multiplayer playlists of events. Winning every event in one gets "Speed Master".
  • Prestige mode: a harder set of events. Two of the rarest achievements come from it, winning all of them and then getting Gold on all of them.
  • Daily challenges: these count toward a monthly rank. They're the slowest achievements to earn because you have to log in on many different days.

Stage | Goal

Early | One rear-drive car you like, upgraded for power and tuned toward drift for Style events

Mid | Add a grip-focused car for Speed events

Late | Top-tier car for high-rated events; keep your drift car for Style

Money is limited early, so avoid buying cars you will not actually use for a specific event type. The Hot Rods update doubled the garage to 10 slots, and filling every slot unlocks "Full House". Buy cars for a purpose first, then fill the empty slots late in the game when money is no problem.

Achievement Plan

There are 45 Steam achievements, and all of them need the online servers, so don't put them off. The global unlock rates below come from the Steam achievements page.

Phase 1: story (most of these unlock naturally)

  • Setup and tutorial beats: "Home Is Where Your Car Is", "No Filter" (first snapshot), "Wrap It Up" (download a shared wrap), "Triple Crown" (win three events in a row).
  • Icon milestones: "I Am Speed" (beat Magnus' record), "Single Take Star" (Ken's Gymkhana in one take), "RWB" (meet Nakai-san), "Choo Choo!" (the Risky Devil drift train), "Unstoppable" (the Outlaw's two-roadblocks-in-a-pursuit challenge).
  • Become each Icon, then "The Ultimate Icon" (about 8% of players have it).

Phase 2: garage and tuning, which you can buy your way through

  • "Beyond Extreme": set the handling slider all the way to drift or grip once. It takes seconds.
  • "Full Power": fit a top-end part in every performance category.
  • "Kustom Kar": buy your first Hot Rod.
  • "Wrap Artist": share one of your own wraps with the community.
  • "Filter Addict": take a snapshot with a filter in Snapshot Pro mode.

Phase 3: the grind (the rarest, all under 3%)

  • "Hit The Ceiling": REP level 70. It comes slowly from general play, so do it alongside everything else.
  • "Mental Unblock": a 350,000 drift score in the Mental Block event. Use your best drift build with the slider pushed toward drift, and link corners without touching walls.
  • "Speed Master": win every event in a SpeedList.
  • "Basic Bronze" and "Gold Plated": win all Prestige events, then get Gold on all of them. These are the hardest in the game (around 1–2%).
  • "Serious Fun" and "Climbing the Ranks": 15 daily challenges, then monthly rank 10. Do a daily whenever you launch the game.

Also watch "Social Scene" (get called out by other racers 50 times) and "Drag Queen" (win five drag races). Both come from open-world and Hot Rods play.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Expecting a pause button. It is always online; menus do not pause the world.
  • Upgrading visuals before performance in the early game.
  • Using one build for every event. Grip and drift tunes are very different.
  • Chasing cops too early with a slow car; Outlaw rep is easier once you have speed.
  • Ignoring advanced tuning. A few tweaks can transform a car's handling.
  • Buying at full price without checking online status. The game depends on EA servers.

Advanced Tips

  • Braking points: brake earlier in grip builds; drift builds want a short, sharp brake tap.
  • Use a close camera (bumper/hood) for precise lines and the chase cam for controlling drift angle. The game has no interior cockpit view.
  • Nitrous management: save it for exits of slow corners and long straights.
  • Wheel users: set steering rotation and force feedback carefully; try manual gears with clutch if your wheel supports it.
  • Photo mode: Snapshot Pro challenges reward good composition; try them for variety.
