Everything a new or returning Survival player needs: first-night priorities, the full progression path from wood tools to the Ender Dragon and beyond, farming, enchanting, and what differs between Java and Bedrock.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Java Edition 26.3 / Bedrock Edition 26.50 ("Wilderness Bound" game drop, released September 15, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Punch a tree first, always. Logs become planks, planks become a crafting table and sticks, and that unlocks every wooden tool.
  • Get to stone tools within the first few minutes. A wooden pickaxe mines just enough cobblestone for a stone pickaxe, axe, and sword.
  • Survive night one with a bed or a shelter. Kill three sheep for wool (or craft a single-use straw bed from hay bales, see below) and sleep to skip the night. Only a regular bed sets your spawn point. No bed? Dig into a hillside and block the entrance.
  • Food matters more than health. Your hunger bar drives natural regeneration. Cooked meat (steak, porkchop, mutton) is far better than raw. Start a wheat farm on day one.
  • Torches stop spawns. Hostile mobs spawn in darkness (block light level 0). Light up your base and mine tunnels.
  • Iron is the real milestone. Iron gives you a bucket, shield, armor, and an iron pickaxe, which is required to mine diamond, gold, redstone, and emerald ore.
  • Diamonds are most common deep underground. Since the Caves & Cliffs update the world goes down to Y -64, and diamond ore is most frequent near the bottom of the deepslate layer.
  • Never dig straight down or straight up. Lava pockets and falling gravel are the classic killers.
  • Set your spawn point. Sleeping in (or using) a bed sets respawn there. Dying drops your whole inventory where you died.
  • Use F3 (Java) or "Show Coordinates" (Bedrock world settings) to always know where you are.

Java vs Bedrock: Which Should You Play?

Both are sold together on PC as "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition." The core game is the same, but details differ.

Java Edition | Bedrock Edition

Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux | Windows, consoles, mobile

Crossplay | Java players only | Across all Bedrock platforms

Mods | Huge free modding scene (Fabric, NeoForge, Forge) | Add-ons and Marketplace content

Redstone | Quasi-connectivity, predictable timing; technical players prefer it | Some behaviors differ (e.g. no quasi-connectivity, pistons behave differently)

Combat | Attack cooldown: timed hits deal full damage | Faster, spam-friendlier clicking

Performance | Improves a lot with optimization mods | Generally smoother on low-end hardware

Servers | Community servers (Hypixel etc.) | Featured servers, Realms

Rule of thumb: play Bedrock if your friends are on console or phone; play Java if you want mods, technical redstone, or big community servers.

Controls (Default)

Action | Java (PC) | Bedrock (PC)

Move | WASD | WASD

Jump / Sneak | Space / Left Shift | Space / Left Shift

Sprint | Left Ctrl or double-tap W | Left Ctrl or double-tap W

Attack / Mine | Left click | Left click

Use / Place | Right click | Right click

Inventory | E | E

Swap to offhand | F | F (in inventory screen)

Debug / coordinates | F3 | Enable "Show Coordinates" in settings

Pick block (Creative) | Middle click | Middle click

Core Systems

Health, Hunger, and Food

  • You have 10 hearts and 10 hunger shanks. With a mostly full hunger bar you regenerate health; when it empties you start taking damage.
  • Saturation is a hidden value: high-saturation foods (steak, cooked porkchop, golden carrots) keep you full much longer.
  • Best early foods: cooked beef/pork/mutton, bread from a wheat farm, baked potatoes. Late game: golden carrots.

Mining Tiers

Pickaxe | Can mine

Wood | Stone, coal

Stone | Iron, copper, lapis

Iron | Gold, diamond, redstone, emerald

Diamond | Obsidian, ancient debris

Netherite | Same as diamond, faster and more durable

Where Ores Are (Overworld)

Ore distribution follows the 1.18+ world height (Y -64 to 320):

  • Coal and copper: common in exposed stone and mountains.
  • Iron: very common in mountains and also has a large deep band; huge iron "veins" appear deep underground.
  • Diamond: most common near the bottom of the world (roughly Y -50 to -60), and more common where it isn't exposed to air.
  • Gold: underground everywhere, but extra-common in Badlands (Mesa) biomes.
  • Emerald: only in mountain biomes.
  • Ancient debris (for Netherite): Nether only, low down. Bed or TNT mining around Y 15 in the Nether is the classic method.

Mobs to Know Early

Mob | Threat | Counter

Zombie / Skeleton / Spider | Basic night mobs | Shield, sword, keep distance from skeletons

Creeper | Explodes, wrecks builds | Hit and back off; cats scare them

Enderman | Very strong when provoked | Don't look at them; stand under a 2-block-high ceiling

Drowned | Can carry tridents | Avoid ocean at night early on

Phantom | Spawns if you skip sleep for 3+ nights | Just sleep

Warden | Deep Dark biome, extremely dangerous | Sneak, avoid sculk shriekers, leave

Progression Path

This is the "standard" route to beating the game.

  • Day 1: wood, stone tools, food, bed, basic shelter, furnace.
  • Days 2–5: iron tools and armor, shield, bucket (water bucket saves you from fall damage and lava), wheat and animal farms.
  • Diamonds: strip mine or explore caves near Y -58. Priority order: diamond pickaxe, then sword, then armor.
  • Enchanting: craft an enchanting table (diamonds, obsidian, book) and surround it with 15 bookshelves (one block gap) to unlock level-30 enchantments. Lapis lazuli is the fuel.
  • The Nether: build a portal from at least 10 obsidian (a 4x5 frame without corners), light it with flint and steel. Wear at least one piece of gold armor so Piglins don't attack you. Goals: blaze rods (Nether Fortress), Nether wart (for brewing), ancient debris, and optionally a Bastion Remnant for loot.
  • Brewing: blaze powder fuels a brewing stand. Must-have potions: Fire Resistance (for the Nether and lava), Healing, Strength, Slow Falling.
  • Find the Stronghold: craft Eyes of Ender (blaze powder + ender pearl) and throw them; they fly toward the nearest stronghold. Endermen drop pearls; villager clerics can also trade them.
  • The End: fill the End Portal frame with Eyes of Ender. Bring blocks, a bow with plenty of arrows, water bucket, and food.
  • Ender Dragon: destroy the End Crystals on top of the obsidian pillars first (some are caged with iron bars), then hit the dragon when it perches on the center portal. Beds explode in the End: advanced players use them for burst damage, but it's risky.
  • Post-game: go through the End gateway to the outer islands for End Cities (Shulker boxes, Elytra), upgrade to Netherite with smithing tables and netherite upgrade templates, fight the Wither, and raid Ocean Monuments or Trial Chambers.

Enchantments Worth Chasing

Gear | Top Enchantments

Pickaxe | Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Fortune III (more ore) or Silk Touch, Mending

Sword | Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, Mending, Sweeping Edge (Java)

Armor | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending; Feather Falling IV on boots

Bow | Power V, Infinity or Mending, Unbreaking III

Elytra | Unbreaking III, Mending

Mending repairs gear with experience orbs. You can't get it from the enchanting table; get it from librarian villager trades, fishing, or loot chests. It's the single most valuable enchantment in the game.

Anvil tip: repeated anvil use raises cost ("Too Expensive!" in Survival once over the limit). Combine books together first, then apply once.

Farms and Villagers

Early Farms

  • Wheat/carrots/potatoes: plant on hoed dirt next to water (water hydrates up to 4 blocks away).
  • Animal pens: breed cows and sheep with wheat, pigs with carrots, chickens with seeds.
  • Sugar cane: needs to be next to water; used for paper (books, maps, rockets).
  • Iron farm: villagers + zombie scare mechanic spawn iron golems. Designs differ between Java and Bedrock, so follow an edition-specific tutorial.

Villager Trading

  • Villagers take a profession from the job-site block nearest them: lectern = librarian (enchanted books), composter = farmer, grindstone = weaponsmith, etc.
  • If a librarian's trade is bad and you haven't traded with it yet, break and replace the lectern to reroll the offer. Once you trade, the offer locks.
  • Curing a zombie villager (Splash Potion of Weakness + Golden Apple) gives big permanent trade discounts.
  • Hero of the Village (from winning a raid) gives temporary discounts too.

What's New in 2026

Minecraft moved to smaller "game drops" and year-based version numbers in 2026. The three drops so far:

Drop | When | Highlights

Tiny Takeover (Java 26.1 / Bedrock 26.10) | March 24, 2026 | Redesigned baby mobs, the Golden Dandelion (stops babies from growing up), craftable name tags, updated rabbits

Chaos Cubed (Java 26.2 / Bedrock 26.30) | June 16, 2026 | Sulfur Caves biome with sulfur and cinnabar blocks and geysers, plus the Sulfur Cube mob that absorbs blocks and changes behavior

Wilderness Bound (Java 26.3 / Bedrock 26.50) | September 15, 2026 | Dappled forest biome, poplar wood, abandoned camps, cushions, straw beds, wool and concrete stairs/slabs

Wilderness Bound Details

  • Dappled forest biome: autumn-colored forest found near cold biomes, with poplar trees (red, orange, or yellow leaves), red shrubs, and shelf mushrooms.
  • Poplar wood set: logs, planks, stairs, slabs, doors, fences, signs, boats.
  • Abandoned camps: new structure spawning across many forest and jungle biomes, with loot chests, straw beds, and cushions themed to the biome. New explorer maps can lead you to them.
  • Straw beds: crafted from hay bales, stackable, and single-use (destroyed after you sleep). They skip the night without changing your spawn point — handy when traveling, but they won't set a respawn at your new camp.
  • Cushions: 16-color decorative seats you can sit on.
  • Wool and concrete stairs and slabs in all 16 colors — a big deal for builders.
  • Java also got new commands (/compute, /posteffect) for map makers.

Building Basics

  • Break up flat walls with depth: pillars of logs, stairs as trim, slabs for overhangs.
  • Use a palette of 3–4 blocks that share a tone (e.g. spruce, cobblestone, deepslate). The new wool and concrete stairs/slabs make colorful roofs and furniture much easier.
  • Roofs: stairs + slabs, with an overhang of one block.
  • Light without torches everywhere: lanterns, glowstone under carpets, or sea lanterns hidden in floors.
  • Starter base location: near a village or on a coastline so you have water, food, and trades close.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Digging straight down into lava or a cave drop.
  • Wandering far without coordinates written down. Write your base coords before long trips.
  • Going to the Nether without gold armor or Fire Resistance.
  • Using Diamonds on armor before a pickaxe. Pickaxe first, always.
  • Enchanting without bookshelves. Level 1–8 enchants waste lapis; build the 15-shelf setup.
  • Fighting the Warden. It's designed to be avoided. Sneak (wool muffles vibrations) and leave the Deep Dark if you trigger shriekers.
  • Taking the whole inventory to the End. Leave valuables in chests or shulker boxes; the void keeps your items forever.
  • Leaving creepers alive near your base. Light the area and wall it off.

Advanced Tips

  • Nether highways: 1 block in the Nether equals 8 in the Overworld. Link portals for fast travel.
  • Elytra + firework rockets is the best transport in the game. Add Unbreaking and Mending.
  • Shulker boxes keep their contents when broken; carry them on expeditions.
  • Totem of Undying (from Evokers in Woodland Mansions and raids) saves you from one death when held.
  • Mob farms by edition: spawn mechanics differ between Java and Bedrock; always match a tutorial to your edition and version.
  • Trial Chambers (with Trial Spawners and Vaults) are a great mid-game source of enchanted books, the Mace ingredients, and loot. Trial keys open Vaults.
  • The Mace (crafted from a Heavy Core + Breeze Rod) scales damage with fall distance — pair it with Wind Charges for huge hits.
  • Keep inventory is a gamerule (/gamerule keepInventory true) if you want a relaxed world; it disables achievements on Bedrock.

FAQ

What version is Minecraft on right now? As of late September 2026, Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, the "Wilderness Bound" drop.

Do I get both Java and Bedrock if I buy on PC? Yes, the PC purchase is "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition," which includes both.

What Y level is best for diamonds? Near the bottom of the deepslate layer, roughly Y -50 to -60. Mine in long branch tunnels with gaps of 2–3 blocks between them.

How do I find a village or structure? Explore, use explorer maps from chests, or trade with cartographer villagers. On worlds with cheats enabled, /locate structure works.

Can Java and Bedrock players play together? Not natively. Some Java servers run the Geyser plugin to let Bedrock players join, but that's a server-side addition.

How do I get Mending? Librarian villager trades (reroll lecterns until you see it), fishing, or loot chests. The enchanting table never offers it.

Where are the new dappled forests? They generate near cold biomes, only in newly generated chunks. In an old world, travel into unexplored terrain to find them.
