A full guide to Shadow of Mordor: combat and stealth, the Nemesis System, skill and rune builds, legendary weapons, both regions, and the DLC.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Game of the Year Edition on Steam), including the December 31, 2020 removal of online features. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Online features removed: Since December 31, 2020, the Nemesis Forge (transferring your Nemesis to Shadow of War), Vendetta missions, leaderboards and WBPlay have been unavailable. To make up for it, the epic runes "Orc Hunter" and "Gravewalker" were given to every player automatically. Everything else, including the full campaign, the Nemesis System and the DLC, works offline.

Quick Start

  • The Nemesis System is the game. Uruk captains remember you, get promoted, get stronger when they kill you, and come back after "dying." Every death changes the army.
  • Interrogate Worms first. Worms are intel Uruks marked on the map. Grab one and interrogate it to reveal a captain's strengths and weaknesses. Fighting a captain blind is how runs fall apart.
  • Exploit weaknesses. A captain who is "vulnerable to stealth" or "afraid of Caragors" becomes easy. A captain who is "immune to ranged" or a "combat master" needs a different plan.
  • Upgrade with Mirian early. Health, extra rune slots and arrow capacity make the biggest difference to how survivable you are.
  • Climb the Forge Towers. They reveal the map and unlock fast travel.
  • Use the Wraith world. Shadow Strikes, Brand (once the story unlocks it) and Wraith Stun give you control of the battlefield.
  • Break line of sight when things go bad. Running up a building or into the brush resets the alarm faster than fighting 30 Uruks.
  • Kill captains before they grow. A captain who kills you levels up. Deal with your Nemesis while he is still at a low level.

Controls and Combat Basics

The combat is freeflow melee in the style of the Batman: Arkham games.

Action | Use

Attack | Builds your hit streak

Counter (on the prompt) | Counters an incoming attack. Timing matters more than button mashing

Stun | Staggers shields and breaks guards

Vault / dodge | Get out of encirclements

Aim (Wraith bow) | Slows time for headshots; costs Focus and arrows

Execution | Available once your hit streak builds up. Instantly kills most enemies

Combat Drain | Drains an enemy to restore Elf-shots (Wraith arrows)

Flurry Kill | A finishing flurry available once unlocked

Enemy types to learn

  • Shield Uruks (Defenders): Stun them or vault over them to hit their back.
  • Berserkers: They cannot be countered normally. Vault or dodge, then strike.
  • Hunters and Archers: Kill them early or break line of sight.
  • Caragors: Wild beasts that attack Uruks as much as you. Ride them once you unlock that skill.
  • Graugs: Huge beasts. Great to ride and a nightmare to fight on foot.

The Nemesis System

How the army works

  • The army has captains, who can have bodyguards, and Warchiefs above them. Each Warchief has bodyguards drawn from the captain ranks.
  • Captains gain power by winning events: duels, feasts, hunts, trials and ambushes. Watch the Army screen and interrupt events that would make a dangerous captain stronger.
  • Killing you promotes the Uruk who did it. Some get new traits and remember what happened ("You ran from me last time...").
  • Captains can come back after you "kill" them with scars, metal plates or burns, unless they were beheaded or finished outright.

Strengths and weaknesses (examples)

Trait type | Examples | What to do

Weakness | Vulnerable to stealth, afraid of Caragors, vulnerable to fire, vulnerable to ranged | Plan your approach around it: shadow strike, lure beasts, shoot the campfire

Strength | Immune to ranged, immune to stealth, combat master, enraged by beasts | Avoid that approach entirely

Fear | Terrified of Graugs or Caragors | The captain may run away. Chase him or use the fear against him

Death Threats

You can issue a Death Threat against a captain. He gets extra bodyguards and becomes tougher, but he drops a better rune when you kill him. It is great for farming epic runes once your build is solid.

Branding (Núrnen)

In the second region, Núrnen, you unlock Brand. Branded Uruks follow you:

  • Brand captains to create your own spies and bodyguards inside the army.
  • Send branded captains to kill rivals or to become Warchiefs' bodyguards, then turn them on their Warchief in the fight.
  • Brand a Warchief to take over his position.

The late story is built around controlling the army's Warchiefs this way.

Progression

Experience and Power

  • Experience unlocks skill points.
  • Power comes from killing captains and Warchiefs and from story progress. It unlocks higher skill tiers.
  • Mirian is the currency for upgrades like health, focus, arrow capacity and rune slots.

Skill trees

Tree | Focus

Ranger | Talion's physical skills: melee, stealth kills, mobility

Wraith | Celebrimbor's powers: the Wraith bow, Wraith Stun, Shadow Strike, draining and later Brand upgrades

A good general order: combat staples that make executions easier to trigger → stealth kill upgrades → Shadow Strike → Wraith Stun → beast riding → Brand upgrades once they unlock. Higher tiers in both trees need Power, so killing captains also unlocks skills.

Runes

  • Each of Talion's weapons (the sword Urfael, the dagger Acharn and the bow Azkar) has rune slots. You unlock more with Mirian.
  • Captains drop runes. The stronger the captain, the better the rune. Epic runes come from high-level captains and Warchiefs.
  • Good rune effects restore health on executions, lengthen the Focus time slowdown, or chain Wraith effects. Look for synergies, like health on execute paired with a combat-focused sword.

Weapon Legends

Each weapon has Legend missions:

  • Sword (Urfael): Combat challenges. The final reward is a Legendary upgrade to the sword.
  • Dagger (Acharn): Stealth challenges.
  • Bow (Azkar): Ranged challenges.

Each Legendary rune upgrade is powerful. Unlock them before the late story.

Regions and Collectibles

Region | Notes

Udûn | The first region. Mountains, forts and heavy Uruk presence. You learn the core systems here

Núrnen | The second region. Greener land around the Sea of Núrnen. Brand unlocks and army control begins

Collectibles and side content:

  • Artifacts: Show memories connected to the items. Hunt for them after capturing the region's intel.
  • Ithildin: Collecting it all opens a sealed Ithildin door, which has a reward behind it.
  • Herbs and hunting challenges: Plant and beast challenges give Mirian and XP.
  • Outcast and slave-freedom missions: Side missions that give Mirian and progress.
  • Forge Towers: Fast travel and map reveals.

Story Characters

  • Talion: A Gondorian Ranger bound to a Wraith.
  • Celebrimbor: The Elven smith who forged the Rings of Power. He is the Wraith.
  • Gollum: Appears in artifact-related missions.
  • Ratbag: A cowardly Uruk you help climb the ranks.
  • Hirgon: Leader of the Outcasts in Udûn.
  • Lithariel and Queen Marwen: Figures from the Núrnen story.
  • The Black Hand of Sauron: The main villain, with his lieutenants the Hammer of Sauron and the Tower of Sauron.

DLC (included in GOTY)

  • Lord of the Hunt: A story mission pack featuring Torvin the dwarf hunter. It adds new beasts, beast-focused captains, new runes and hunting challenges.
  • The Bright Lord: A separate story as Celebrimbor, set during the war with Sauron. It lets you use a powerful Brand-heavy army system.
  • Trials of War and the "Test of" challenge packs: Challenge modes. Leaderboards no longer work, but you can still play them.
  • The GOTY edition also includes skins and runes.

Difficulty and Settings

  • On PC, the HD Content high-resolution texture pack needs a lot of VRAM. Only install it if your GPU can handle it.
  • Frame rate: the game supports uncapped frame rates. Turn off V-Sync if you notice stutter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fighting captains without intel. A captain "immune to ranged" or "enraged by beasts" can wipe you out.
  • Letting your Nemesis level up. Every time he kills you he gets stronger. Deal with him early or brand him later.
  • Ignoring Mirian upgrades. Health and rune slots matter much more than cosmetics.
  • Fighting to the death in huge brawls. Break line of sight and reset.
  • Skipping the Legend missions. The Legendary weapon upgrades are huge.
  • Using Death Threats too early. Wait until your build can handle an extra bodyguard pack.

Advanced Tips

  • Shadow Strike into execution chains. Build your hit streak, execute, then Shadow Strike to the next target to keep the chain going.
  • Brand bodyguards before a Warchief fight. When the fight starts, turn them on the Warchief.
  • Use the environment. Shoot campfires (fire), meat bags (beasts), wasp nests and grog barrels (poison) to take out groups and captains.
  • Rune farming: Death Threats on high-level captains and repeat Warchief fights drop epic runes.
  • Mount play: Riding a Caragor makes fighting archers and spear groups much easier. Graugs trample everything.
  • Stealth kills on captains: Captains "vulnerable to stealth" can die in one sneak kill. Scout first.
