A player's guide to the original 2010 Mafia II on PC: what "Classic" means on Steam today, how Empire Bay works (police, money, cars), combat, a spoiler-light story outline, collectibles, the DLC, and modern-PC settings.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Classic PC build; the Steam store page for Mafia II (Classic) now sells the Definitive Edition package. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Store status (September 2026): Mafia II launched in August 2010 (the Steam listing shows 22 March 2011). When Mafia II: Definitive Edition (Hangar 13 and D3T) arrived on 19 May 2020, owners of the original Steam version received the Definitive Edition at no extra cost and kept Classic in their library. The Classic store page's purchasable package is now "Mafia II: Definitive Edition," so new buyers get the remaster. This guide covers Classic; almost all of it (story, chapters, collectibles, police rules) applies to the Definitive Edition too.

Quick Start

  • It's a story game with an open city, not a sandbox. Empire Bay is a backdrop for 15 linear chapters. There is no side-mission list; exploring is for collectibles, shops, and atmosphere.
  • Obey traffic laws when you're not in a chase. Speeding and crashing in front of cops earns a wanted level. Toggle the speed limiter so you cruise at the legal limit.
  • Know the two kinds of "wanted." Police can know your license plate (fix: change plates at a garage) and your face (fix: change clothes at a clothing store). Minor offenses can be settled with a bribe.
  • Cover is king in gunfights. Mafia II is a cover shooter; enemies hit hard and health only regenerates partially. Snap to cover and pop out.
  • Buy guns and ammo at Harry's and other gun shops. Ammo is the main thing you spend money on in firefights.
  • Fill up your tank. Cars use fuel; gas stations refuel you (and can be robbed, which is loud).
  • Save is checkpoint-based. You can't save anywhere, so finish a chapter segment before quitting.
  • Collect Playboy magazines and Wanted posters as you go. Chapter select lets you go back, but it's easier to pick them up on the way.

Controls (Classic, keyboard and mouse defaults)

Action | Default

Move | WASD

Shoot / aim | Left / right mouse

Reload | R

Enter / exit vehicle | F

Take cover, sprint, speed limiter, map | See Options, Controls

Bindings for cover, the speed limiter, and the map differ between setups and are easy to rebind, so check Options, Controls in your copy. The speed limiter toggle is the single most useful setting in the game.

How Empire Bay Works

Police and wanted levels

Offense level | Typical cause | How to clear it

Traffic (fine) | Speeding, crashing near police | Pull over and pay the fine, or bribe

Arrest | Assault, car theft seen by police, resisting | Bribe (if offered), or escape and lose them

Shoot on sight | Firing weapons, killing | Escape, then change plates and clothes

  • Plates: after an escape, police may remember your car. Change the plates at a garage or ditch the car.
  • Face: police may remember your look; buy or change clothes at a clothing store (or wardrobe at home).

Money

Money comes mainly from story payouts. Side income is possible: selling stolen cars to Mike Bruski's scrapyard or to Derek at the docks, and robbing stores (loud, and it brings the police). Spend on:

Item | Priority

Ammo and weapons | High; you will run low in big firefights

Clothes | Medium; needed to lose "face" wanted levels

Car tuning and repairs | Medium; faster cars help in chases

Food/drink | Low; heals you

Cars

  • Cars have realistic-ish handling for the era. Early 1940s cars are slow and heavy; 1950s hot rods are much faster.
  • Garages can repair cars, change plates, and tune them for speed.
  • Stolen cars can be stored in your garage for later.
  • Two driving model options (Normal and Simulation) exist; Simulation is stricter.

Combat

  • Cover shooting: you snap to cover and blind-fire or aim. Health regenerates only partially; food and drink restore the rest.
  • Weapons: revolvers and pistols, Tommy gun, M1 Garand, MP40, shotguns, BAR, grenades, Molotovs. Tommy guns and shotguns are the most reliable close-quarters tools.
  • Fists: melee has light and heavy strikes, blocking, and dodges. Counterattacks after a dodge end fights quickly.
  • Headshots matter; most human enemies die much faster to the head.

Story Outline (Spoiler-Light)

The story follows Vito Scaletta, a Sicilian-American war veteran, and his friend Joe Barbaro from 1945 to 1951. Key figures: Henry Tomasino, Leo Galante, Don Carlo Falcone, Derek Pappalardo, and Don Alberto Clemente.

Stretch | What happens | Tip

Opening (1943-1945) | War in Sicily, then Vito returns to a wintry Empire Bay | Learn cover shooting and driving here

Early chapters | Paying off family debts; small jobs with Joe | Pick up easy collectibles early

Middle chapters | Serious crimes, a big setback for Vito, a time jump | Your wardrobe and cars change with the era

1951 chapters | Working with the families, rising violence | Stock ammo before big shootouts

Final chapters | Betrayals and a famous ending | Expect long firefights; save your best guns

The last chapter (Chapter 15) is famous for its abrupt, emotional ending. The DLC does not change it.

Collectibles

Collectible | Count | Where

Playboy magazines | 50 | Inside buildings and chapter locations; unlock pin-up images

Wanted posters | 159 | Walls around Empire Bay, including chapter-only locations; unlock concept art

Tips:

  • Several are only available during specific chapters (inside mission locations). If you miss one, use Chapter Select after completing the game.
  • Use a checklist by chapter; many guides list them per chapter, which is the efficient way to do it.

Achievements Worth Planning

Classic has 67 Steam achievements (base game plus Jimmy's Vendetta and Joe's Adventures). Most chapter ones unlock naturally; these are the ones people miss or need to plan for:

Achievement | Requirement | Tip

Made Man / Tough Nut | Finish the story on Medium or higher / on Hard | Play Hard once and you get both

A Real Gentleman | Help the woman fix her car in Home Sweet Home | Chapter 2; stop when you see her by the road

Big Brother | Protect Francesca | Story-linked early event

He Who Pays the Barber | Improve the dockworkers' hair cuts | Tied to an early-game scene at the docks; check a chapter checklist if you miss it

A Lesson in Manners | Show you know how to talk to a hooker | Tied to a specific scene; replay via Chapter Select if missed

The Professional | Obtain the ration stamps without raising the alarm | Stealth through the stamp heist

Mail Man | Sell all the gas stamps before the time runs out | Drive efficiently between buyers on the stamp route

Wake Up Call | Help Leo out of a tricky situation without getting caught | Stealth-focused story moment

Proper Scrapper / Exporter | Sell 5 cars to Mike Bruski's scrapyard / to Derek at the docks | Also your best side income early on

Stuck Up | Rob 5 stores in under 5 minutes | Plan a tight route of shops; expect police heat

Hard to Kill | Survive the police for 10 minutes when they want you dead | Use a fast, tuned car and keep moving

Dream Handling / Tuned Ride | Upgrade a car to max level / one level | Tune one favorite car fully

Ladies Man / Card Sharp | All Playboy magazines / all Wanted posters | Chapter select after the story

Pedal to the Metal / Cruise Control | Hit 125 mph / keep 30+ mph for 5 minutes | A tuned sports car on a long road

DLC

DLC | Protagonist | Notes

The Betrayal of Jimmy | Jimmy, a gun-for-hire | Arcade-style, non-linear missions with scoring

Jimmy's Vendetta | Jimmy | Jimmy escapes prison and seeks revenge; more arcade missions

Joe's Adventures | Joe Barbaro | Fills in what Joe did while Vito was away; story plus arcade missions

Cosmetic/content packs (Made Man, Vegas, Renegade, Greaser, War Hero, and others) add cars and outfits. The Digital Deluxe Edition included the Made Man Pack, a digital art book, soundtrack, and map.

Classic vs Definitive Edition

Classic (2010) | Definitive Edition (2020)

Visuals | Original assets, APEX PhysX effects on PC | Remastered textures, lighting, and models

DLC | Separately or in bundles | All three story DLCs included

Performance | Can struggle with PhysX on modern systems | Better baseline, though some players prefer Classic's look

Where to get | Existing owners only | Current store purchase (the Classic listing now sells this)

Some players prefer Classic's lighting and PhysX effects; others prefer the DE's textures. If you own both, try each.

PC Tips for Classic

  • APEX PhysX: High PhysX can tank performance, especially without an NVIDIA GPU (it falls back to the CPU). Drop it to Medium or Off if you see big frame drops in shootouts.
  • Resolution and aspect ratio: the game supports widescreen; ultrawide may need community fixes.
  • Save location backups: before modding, back up your saves.
  • Anti-aliasing: the in-game options are limited; driver-level settings can help.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Driving like it's a racing game. Every cop that sees you speed becomes a problem.
  • Keeping the same outfit after a shootout. Police remember faces; change clothes.
  • Keeping the same car after a chase. Change plates or swap cars.
  • Rushing fights. Enemies flank; stay in cover and pick off heads.
  • Ignoring food. It is the easiest way to top off health between fights.
  • Expecting side quests. The city is mostly scenery; enjoy the radio and the era details.

Advanced Tips

  • Speed limiter everywhere: keep it on while exploring to avoid pointless police trouble.
  • Garage your best cars: stolen fast cars stored in your garage make later chapters' drives easier.
  • Tune for speed early: a tuned car turns chase segments from stressful to trivial.
  • Use melee counters: in fistfights, dodge and counter rather than trading blows.
  • Collectible routing: collect everything you can per chapter; chapter-only interiors are the ones people miss.
