A practical guide to the original Jurassic World Evolution (2018): Career progression through the Five Deaths, keeping dinosaurs happy and contained, making money, balancing the three divisions, and getting five stars on every island.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC update 1.12.4 (February 2020). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note: The original game is finished. Its last patch was Update 1.12.4 on 25 February 2020, and Frontier has since released Jurassic World Evolution 2 (November 2021) and Jurassic World Evolution 3 (21 October 2025). JWE1 is still sold and fully playable offline. It's a smaller, simpler game than its sequels, which makes it a good starting point.

Quick Start

  • Do Isla Matanceros properly. It's the tutorial island and the start of your progression. You unlock the other islands in order (Isla Muerta, Isla Tacaño, Isla Pena, Isla Sorna) by raising your park's star rating.
  • Keep all three divisions happy. Science, Entertainment and Security each hand out contracts and track your reputation with them. If you neglect one for too long it gets hostile and can sabotage you, for example by cutting your power or releasing disease.
  • Take contracts all the time. They pay well early on, raise division reputation, and unlock buildings and research. It's usually a mistake to have no contract running.
  • Sell fossils you don't need. When the Expedition Center brings back fossils, extract the DNA you need at the Fossil Center and sell the rest. It's one of the quickest ways to make money early.
  • Check comfort before you release a dinosaur. Every species has needs for grassland, forest, population size and social group. A dinosaur that isn't comfortable enough will attack fences and break out.
  • Build a Ranger Station and an ACU Centre early. Rangers refill feeders, heal and inspect dinosaurs. The ACU tranquilizes and moves them. You'll need both before your first breakout or storm.
  • Power runs everything. Each building needs a connection from a Power Station, through substations and pylons. Hatcheries, fences and shops all shut down in a blackout.
  • Protect your guests. Emergency Shelters, sturdier fences and research into fence and building durability keep a breakout from turning into a disaster for your rating.
  • Research all the time. The Research Center unlocks new buildings, upgrades, dinosaur modifications and faster excavation. An idle Research Center is wasted money.
  • Save before storms and risky releases. Storms can knock out power and fences without warning. Manual saves let you undo a bad disaster.

The Core Loop

JWE's economy is a cycle:

  • Expedition Center sends a dig team to a dig site. Higher-tier sites unlock over time and give fossils for rarer species.
  • Fossil Center extracts DNA from the fossils, raising a species' genome percentage, or sells them for cash.
  • Hammond Creation Lab incubates a dinosaur once its genome is high enough to be viable. Incubation costs money, and a higher genome means a better chance the dinosaur survives.
  • The dinosaur is released into an enclosure. Guests come to see it, and your park's appeal goes up.
  • Guests spend money at shops, on tours and on attractions. Divisions give contracts, you research new tech, and the cycle repeats with bigger species.

Park rating (stars)

Your island star rating comes from a mix of:

  • Dinosaur rating. Variety, number, genome quality and modifications all count. Big carnivores and modified dinosaurs are worth a lot, and each dinosaur contributes more when it's healthy and comfortable.
  • Guest rating. Guests need food, drink, shopping, fun (amenities) and transport, and they need to be able to see the dinosaurs from viewing platforms, galleries and tours.
  • Safety. Deaths and injuries from breakouts pull your rating down.

To reach five stars, keep adding species variety and higher-quality dinosaurs while making sure guest coverage keeps up with the size of your park.

The three divisions

Division | Wants | Typical contracts

Science | Research and genetic progress | Reach a genome level, incubate modified dinosaurs, excavate at specific sites

Entertainment | Guest satisfaction and income | Hit a rating or income target, build specific attractions

Security | Containment and safety | Build fences, ranger or ACU facilities, keep dinosaurs contained

If a division's reputation drops too low, it can sabotage your park, for example with power shutdowns or disease outbreaks.

Each division also has story missions. Finishing a division's full mission line on an island gives an achievement ("An aim not devoid of merit" for Entertainment, "Using sophisticated techniques" for Science, "You got them eating out of your hand" for Security). The practical rule: work on all three in rotation. If one bar falls well behind the others, spend a few contracts on that division before its reputation turns hostile.

Buildings Cheat Sheet

Category | Key buildings | Notes

Science | Expedition Center, Fossil Center, Research Center, Hammond Creation Lab | Put these on power first and upgrade them as soon as research allows

Security / ops | Ranger Station, ACU Centre, Emergency Shelter, fences (Low/Medium/High Security and higher), Power Station, substations | Fence tier needs to match the dinosaur's attack. Big carnivores break weak fences

Guests | Food, drink, shopping and fun amenities, hotels, viewing platforms and galleries | Each amenity covers a radius. Watch the guest-needs overlay for gaps

Transport / tours | Monorail, Gyrosphere, Jurassic World Tours | Tours are big attraction and income sources

Enclosure | Herbivore feeders, carnivore feeders (goat or livestock), terrain tools (forest, grass, water) | Every enclosure needs water and the correct feeder

Upgrades

Most buildings have upgrade slots, unlocked through research. In rough priority order:

  • Fossil Center and Expedition Center: faster extraction and excavation, plus better fossil quality.
  • Hammond Creation Lab: faster, cheaper incubation and modification slots.
  • Amenities: higher profit and wider coverage.
  • Power: more output from Power Stations so your grid doesn't brown out as the park grows.

Dinosaur Care

Comfort

Look at a dinosaur's needs in the Hammond Creation Lab before you incubate it, and plan the enclosure to suit.

  • Grassland and forest. Each species wants a certain ratio. Herbivores that forage need the right plants, and you can place trees and bushes with the terrain tools.
  • Social and population. Species want a minimum and maximum group size and a maximum total population in the enclosure. Too few, too many, or clashing species all reduce comfort. Some species tolerate others and some don't. Check before mixing.
  • Food and water. Herbivore feeders for plant-eaters, goat or livestock feeders for carnivores, and a water source reachable from the enclosure. Rangers restock feeders, or you can refill them manually.
  • Health. A sick dinosaur is uncomfortable. Rangers can medicate, and the ACU can tranquilize a dinosaur for treatment.

When comfort drops below the threshold, the dinosaur gets stressed and tests the fences. Fix the cause first (more forest, a bigger group, a separate pen) before the dinosaur escapes and wrecks your park.

Fighting and carnivores

  • Large carnivores like the T. rex and Indominus rex usually need their own enclosure. Keeping two apex predators in one pen tends to end in fights.
  • Carnivores hunt suitable prey if you put them together. It looks great, but it eats into your herbivore count.
  • The Indominus rex is a genetically modified hybrid, and its achievement ("That's no dinosaur") is a milestone in Career mode. Release it only once you have your best fences and an ACU ready.

Genetic modifications

The Hammond Creation Lab lets you swap genes to boost attack, defence, lifespan, resilience, comfort and more, or to change appearance. Rules of thumb:

  • Adding genome quality and resilience gives you tougher dinosaurs with a higher rating.
  • Mods that raise attack make a dinosaur more valuable and more dangerous. The "Mommy's very angry" achievement asks for a modified dinosaur with over 150 Attack.
  • Comfort genes can make a species easier (or much harder) to keep calm.

Handling Emergencies

Event | Response

Breakout | Activate Emergency Shelters so guests take cover, send the ACU to tranquilize and transport, repair the fence with Rangers, then find out why comfort dropped

Storm | Expect damage to power and fences. Have Rangers repair buildings, and keep spare power so one downed station doesn't black out the island

Disease | Rangers or ACU treat infected dinosaurs. Research disease resistance and vaccinations to prevent outbreaks

Sabotage | Caused by a low division reputation. Raise that division with contracts right away

You can drive Ranger vehicles and fly ACU helicopters yourself. It's faster than queuing a task when something needs fixing right now, and several achievements need manual control (manual headshots, long-range tranqs, tranquilizing a running dinosaur, and so on).

Island Progression (Career)

Island | Role in the campaign

Isla Matanceros | Starting island. Learn the loop here. Reaching four stars here unlocks the Isla Nublar sandbox

Isla Muerta | Second island ("Not alone on this island" achievement)

Isla Tacaño | Third island ("Going to make a fortune with this place")

Isla Pena | Fourth island ("On this island there's no such thing as safe")

Isla Sorna | Last of the Five Deaths, the franchise's Site B ("Thank God for Site B")

Isla Nublar | A separate sandbox island (unlimited funds, set your own weather and time of day), unlocked by a four-star rating on Isla Matanceros ("Spared no expense" achievement). Not one of the Five Deaths

Each island has its own map shape, weather and terrain. Before you commit to a layout, check how much flat, buildable land there is and where storms are likely to hit.

The "How did you do this?" achievement asks for a five-star rating on every island in Las Cinco Muertes. You can return to earlier islands at any time, so a cash-rich late island can be used to push your research while you revisit an island that stalled.

Other Modes and DLC

  • Sandbox: Unlimited funds and adjustable settings, including weather and time of day. The Isla Nublar sandbox is the first you get (four stars on Matanceros). Good for testing enclosure layouts and dinosaur combinations.
  • Free updates: The Fallen Kingdom update (June 2018) added free content alongside the film, and Challenge Mode arrived post-launch as a free update.
  • Challenge Mode: Limited money, set rules and difficulties up to Jurassic. Several achievements require five stars here, including on Jurassic difficulty and within time limits on Medium or Hard and above.
  • Paid DLC includes story campaigns such as Secrets of Dr. Wu (November 2018, with Dr. Wu's missions and the Spinoraptor), Claire's Sanctuary (June 2019, the Sanctuary island) and Return to Jurassic Park (December 2019, a classic-era Nublar campaign), along with dinosaur packs such as the Deluxe Dinosaur Pack (June 2018), Cretaceous Dinosaur Pack (December 2018) and Carnivore Dinosaur Pack (April 2019), plus skin packs. Achievements tied to these DLC (Sanctuary, Dr. Wu, Return to Jurassic Park) need the matching pack.
  • Paleobotany was added in a post-launch update. Prehistoric plants in enclosures affect dinosaur welfare (see the "Green thumb" achievement for a 1,500 paleobotany welfare bonus).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Releasing before you plan the enclosure. Check the comfort needs first. A stressed dinosaur costs far more than the time it takes to reshape a pen.
  • Using weak fences for carnivores. Match fence security to the dinosaur's attack stat. Cheap fences around a Tyrannosaurus are a common way to lose a park.
  • Letting one division fall behind. Sabotage wipes out several hours of progress quickly.
  • Running on one Power Station. A single storm hit turns the lights off everywhere. Build redundancy.
  • Crowding species together. Population and social limits are hard caps. Over-stocking an enclosure makes every dinosaur in it unhappy.
  • Forgetting guest coverage. A park full of dinosaurs with nowhere to eat or shop won't reach five stars.
  • Incubating at low genome. Low-viability incubations can fail and waste the money. Raise the genome with a few more fossil extractions first.

Advanced Tips

  • Leave enclosure space for later species. Big sauropods and apex carnivores need huge areas and change how your whole map works.
  • Use tours for coverage. A tour route through several enclosures shows guests multiple species in one attraction.
  • Place amenities using the overlays. The guest-needs and transport overlays show exactly where coverage is missing.
  • Stack upgrade research. Buy the Fossil Center, Expedition Center and Hammond Creation Lab upgrades first. They speed up everything else.
  • Take photos for money. The Ranger camera can earn cash for good photos, and there are achievements for photos worth $30,000 and $100,000.
  • Keep your best staff busy. Queue ACU and Ranger tasks ahead of time, and use manual control for urgent jobs.
  • Use Challenge mode to learn efficient openings once you know the basics. It rewards knowing which early buildings pay for themselves.

FAQ

Is Jurassic World Evolution still worth playing in 2026? Yes, especially if you want a more focused, easier-to-learn park builder than JWE2 or JWE3. It's no longer updated (the final patch was 1.12.4), so it won't change.

How do I unlock Isla Muerta and the other islands? Raise your star rating on the current island. Islands unlock in order: Matanceros, Muerta, Tacaño, Pena, Sorna. The Isla Nublar sandbox unlocks once Isla Matanceros reaches four stars.

Why do my dinosaurs keep breaking out? Almost always low comfort (not enough forest or grassland, the wrong group size, or species that don't get along) or a fence below the dinosaur's attack level. Check the comfort panel, fix the cause, then upgrade the fence.

How do I make money fast? Take contracts constantly, sell unused fossils at the Fossil Center, build shops and hotels where guest traffic is high, and add tours. Big, modified dinosaurs also pull in more guests.

Do I need the DLC? No. The base game is complete. The DLC adds extra campaigns and species. Buy them if you want more of the same.

Should I play JWE1, JWE2 or JWE3? JWE1 is simpler and has a focused island campaign. JWE2 adds flying and marine reptiles and more modes. JWE3 (October 2025) adds juvenile dinosaurs, breeding and modular building. Go with the newest if you want the most depth.
