A guide to the original Far Cry by Crytek: how its open-island combat works, the weapons and vehicles, how to handle mercenaries and Trigens, surviving the checkpoint-only save system, and getting it running on a modern PC.
Researched September 2026. Current as of the final retail build sold on Steam (app 13520). Online multiplayer services are shut down, but single-player is fully playable. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Status note: Ubisoft closed Far Cry's online servers in October 2015. The Steam page states that the online multiplayer services for this title are shut down but single-player features remain available. It's still sold on Steam and often discounted in Ubisoft sales.
Quick Start
- This is not a modern Far Cry. No outposts, crafting or open-world map. It's a linear chain of levels with wide-open outdoor sections and tighter indoor ones.
- Saves are checkpoints only. There's no quicksave by default, so lose a fight and you replay from the last checkpoint. Play cautiously and heal before pushing.
- Use the binoculars constantly. They tag enemies on your radar and pick up their conversations, so you can plan an attack instead of stumbling into one.
- The AI flanks and calls for help. A lone mercenary who spots you may run off and fire a flare for reinforcements. Kill spotters fast.
- Stay in the foliage. Crouching or going prone in bushes makes you much harder to see, and the stealth meter shows your exposure.
- Pick your fights at range. Outdoor levels are huge, so snipe or pick off patrols from a distance before moving in.
- Armor matters. Collect armor pickups. They soak a lot of damage.
- Trigens change the game. The mutants show up partway through. They're fast, tough and close-range, which is a different fight from mercenaries.
- Pick a sensible difficulty. Higher settings are brutal with checkpoint saves. Medium is a good first run.
Core Mechanics
Stealth and detection
- The stealth meter on the HUD shows how visible and audible you are.
- Movement speed, stance and cover all matter: prone in grass is nearly invisible, sprinting in the open is not.
- Sound gives enemies away: footsteps, chatter and vehicle engines. Use it.
- Throw rocks to distract patrols. Enemies will investigate the noise.
Binoculars
The binoculars zoom, tag enemies on your radar, and include a directional microphone to hear conversations. Later you get thermal ("thermo") binoculars that show heat signatures through foliage and darkness. Tag everything before you engage.
Health and armor
- Health and armor are separate bars.
- Medkits and armor pickups are scattered around, and more are found near fights.
- There's no regeneration. Manage your pickups.
Weapons
Weapon | Type | Notes
Machete | Melee | Silent, close range
Falcon | Pistol | Accurate starter sidearm
MP5 | SMG | Close-quarters, good early
P90 | SMG | Big magazine
M4 | Assault rifle | Versatile
AG36 | Assault rifle | Underslung grenade launcher
OICW | Assault rifle | Scope plus grenade launcher, one of the best all-rounders
Jackhammer | Shotgun | Automatic shotgun, strong against Trigens
M249 | Machine gun | Heavy suppression
Sniper rifle | Precision rifle | Essential for outdoor levels
Rocket launcher | Heavy | Vehicles and big threats
You also get grenades, flashbangs and smoke grenades. Weapon slots are limited, so choose a long-range and a close-range weapon plus something heavy.
Vehicles
Buggies, Humvees (some armed), trucks, patrol boats and a hang glider appear. Mounted guns on vehicles are very strong against mercenaries. Vehicles are loud, though, so expect to draw attention.
Enemies
Mercenaries
Mercenaries come in different roles: regular soldiers, snipers, scouts and heavy gunners. They use cover, flank and call reinforcements by land, sea and air. Tips:
- Kill officers and spotters first.
- Snipers glint and hide in towers. Watch high ground.
- Reinforcements arrive by boat and helicopter. Pick a defensive position and let them come to you.
Trigens
Trigens are genetically engineered mutants, and several types exist. Some are fast and pounce in close, others are big and armored with heavy weapons attached. They ignore much of your stealth play and hit hard at close range.
- Use heavy weapons like the Jackhammer, M249 and grenades.
- Fight from high ground or doorways so they can't surround you.
- Mercenaries and Trigens fight each other. Let them.
Story and Level Structure
You play Jack Carver, a boat charter captain who brings journalist Valerie Constantine to a Pacific island. His boat is destroyed, Val goes missing, and with help from a contact named Doyle over the radio, Jack fights through mercenaries working for Dr. Krieger, whose genetic experiments created the Trigens. Crowe is the mercenary commander you'll meet along the way.
Levels move through beaches, jungle, research facilities, bunkers, swamps and eventually a volcano. Outdoor levels let you choose your route and attack angle. Indoor levels are corridor-driven. The Trigens take over the story around the midpoint, and indoor facility sections get very tense.
Playbook: Outdoor Levels
Outdoor levels are where Far Cry shines. A reliable routine:
- Stop at the first high point you reach and scan with the binoculars. Tag every mercenary you can see and listen in on their chatter.
- Identify the alarm risks. Look for lone patrols that could run to raise the alarm, snipers in towers, and mounted guns.
- Choose an approach angle. There's almost always a flank through the jungle, along the shoreline or over a ridge. The direct road is usually the most defended.
- Open from range. Silently remove snipers and isolated patrols first, ideally with the sniper rifle from well outside their detection range.
- Relocate after every few shots. The AI converges on where the shots came from and will try to flank you.
- Clean up up close once the numbers are down. Pick up armor and ammo from the camp before moving on, since the next checkpoint may be a long way off.
Water is also a route: swimming and boats let you bypass defended roads, though patrol boats cover some channels.
Playbook: Indoor and Facility Sections
- Slow down at corners. Indoor enemies are close and the fights are fast.
- Swap to close-range weapons before you enter: an SMG, the Jackhammer or the OICW.
- Use grenades on rooms you hear enemies in before entering.
- Once Trigens appear, treat every vent, dark room and corridor as a potential ambush. Back up into a corridor so they come to you one at a time.
- Flashlights on weapons help in dark facilities but reveal you, so toggle them as needed.
Suggested Loadouts
Situation | Primary | Secondary | Extras
Early jungle | M4 or MP5 | Falcon | Grenades, rocks
Open outdoor bases | Sniper rifle | OICW or AG36 | Grenades, binoculars
Facilities with mercenaries | P90 or MP5 | OICW | Flashbangs
Trigen-heavy areas | Jackhammer | M249 or OICW | Grenades, rocket launcher for big ones
Ammo supply shifts across the game, so use what the enemies around you are dropping. It's the most reliable ammo source.
Difficulty
Far Cry's difficulty settings run from Easy up to a punishing top tier (the exact list depends on patch level, so check the new-game menu). On the hardest setting, enemies are extremely accurate and your health goes fast. Given the checkpoint-only saves, start on Medium unless you're a veteran of the game.
Running Far Cry on a Modern PC
- Steam includes the final patch. No official patch download is needed.
- Crashes at launch on some modern systems: players commonly report that the 32-bit executable crashes on newer AMD processors, and that launching the 64-bit executable (the Bin64 folder) avoids it. Check PCGamingWiki if you hit this.
- Widescreen: the game supports custom resolutions, but menu and HUD stretching may occur.
- High refresh rates and uncapped framerates can cause oddities in older engines. If physics or cutscenes misbehave, cap your FPS.
- Checkpoint saves: many players use the -DEVMODE launch option to enable quicksave and quickload. It also enables cheats, so use it responsibly if you want a "clean" playthrough.
- Controller: the game was built for mouse and keyboard.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Charging in without tagging. The AI punishes it hard. Scout with binoculars first.
- Ignoring the checkpoint system. Don't risk a long fight at half health.
- Driving into bases. Vehicles are loud and draw every mercenary nearby.
- Wasting rockets on infantry. Save them for vehicles and heavy Trigens.
- Fighting Trigens in the open. Use chokepoints.
- Running in the grass. Crawl, and use the stealth meter.
Advanced Tips
- Sniper plus binoculars. Tag, then snipe. Move positions after a few shots.
- Use rocks to split patrols and pull enemies into ambushes.
- Mounted guns make short work of mercenary groups.
- Let factions fight. In later levels, mercenaries and Trigens attack each other. Wait for the survivors.
- Save grenades for reinforcements arriving in groups.
- Use the hang glider where available to reach high ground or flank.
- Night and thermal optics reveal hidden enemies.
FAQ
Is Far Cry (2004) multiplayer still online? No. Ubisoft closed the online servers in October 2015. Single-player works.
Can I quicksave in Far Cry? Not by default. The game uses checkpoints. The -DEVMODE launch option is a common workaround.
Why does Far Cry crash on startup? Common reasons include incompatibility between the 32-bit executable and newer CPUs. Many players fix it by using the 64-bit executable. Check PCGamingWiki.
How long is Far Cry? Roughly 15 to 20 hours, depending on difficulty and how many checkpoints you replay.
Is Far Cry connected to later Far Cry games? Only loosely. Jack Carver's story continued in the console spin-offs (Far Cry Instincts). Far Cry 2 onward are separate stories.
What engine does Far Cry use? Crytek's CryEngine, originally built for this game.
