A start-to-sphere guide for Dyson Sphere Program: your first hour, the research (matrix) progression, logistics, power, rare resources, the Dark Fog, and building your first Dyson Swarm and Sphere.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Early Access build V0.10.35.29088 (September 24, 2026), which added vegetation transplanting and terrain restoration. The game is still in Early Access; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Research is everything. The tech tree is gated by colored matrices (research cubes). Your whole factory exists to make the next color.
- Hand-craft only to bootstrap. Icarus (your mecha) can craft early items, but automate as soon as you can. Hand-crafting doesn't scale.
- Build a main bus or modular blocks. Pick a layout style early; spaghetti is fine for the start but painful by red science.
- Power first, always. Wind Turbines early, then Thermal Power Plants burning coal, then Solar, then Mini Fusion, then Ray Receivers and Artificial Stars.
- Blue science needs Magnetic Coils and Circuit Boards. Get Iron, Copper, and Magnets automated immediately.
- Your mecha needs fuel. Keep coal or better fuel in the fuel chamber; running dry leaves you stranded.
- Other planets have what you need. Titanium and Silicon are usually off your home planet; unlock flight early.
- Use blueprints. Save any working module (smelter line, science block) and paste it elsewhere.
- Choose combat or peaceful mode at game start. The Dark Fog is optional; peaceful mode is a pure factory game.
The Research Ladder
Matrix | Color | Key inputs | Unlocks
Electromagnetic Matrix | Blue | Magnetic Coil, Circuit Board | Early logistics, smelting upgrades, basic power
Energy Matrix | Red | Energetic Graphite, Hydrogen | Oil processing, better power, plastics chain
Structure Matrix | Yellow | Diamond, Titanium Crystal | Interplanetary logistics, advanced materials
Information Matrix | Purple | Processor, Particle Broadband | Interstellar logistics, better machines
Gravity Matrix | Green | Graviton Lens, Quantum Chip | Advanced Dyson components, gravity tech
Universe Matrix | White | Every other matrix plus Antimatter | Endgame upgrades
Research is done in Matrix Labs; they can be stacked vertically to save space. Stacked labs pass items upward.
Your First Hour
- Mine iron, copper, stone, and coal by hand only as long as needed.
- Build Mining Machines on iron, copper, and coal veins; connect them with Conveyor Belts.
- Arc Smelters turn ore into Iron Ingots, Copper Ingots, Magnets, and Stone Bricks.
- Place Wind Turbines and Tesla Towers for power; switch to Thermal Power Plants on coal when you can.
- Assemblers make Gears, Magnetic Coils, and Circuit Boards.
- Build Matrix Labs and start Electromagnetic Matrix production.
- Research Basic Logistics System and Automatic Metallurgy early, then Mecha upgrades like faster movement and flight.
Tip: Sorters (inserters) have tiers. Upgrade them when a line starves. Belts also have tiers (Mk.I, II, III); a full Mk.I belt is often the bottleneck in early science.
Logistics
Tool | Scope | Use
Conveyor Belt Mk.I–III | Local | The backbone of every factory
Splitters, Piler, Traffic Monitor | Local | Balancing, stacking cargo, counting
Logistics Distributor + Logistics Bots | Local area | Short-range delivery, including to Icarus
Planetary Logistics Station (PLS) + Logistics Drones | Same planet | Move items anywhere on one planet
Interstellar Logistics Station (ILS) + Logistics Vessels | Across star systems | Import Titanium, Silicon, rare resources from other systems
Orbital Collector | Gas giants | Harvests Hydrogen, Deuterium, Fire Ice from gas giants
Rules:
- Stations need power and a supply/demand setting per item. Set "Supply" at the source station and "Demand" at the consumer.
- Warpers (Space Warpers) let vessels jump between stars fast. Put a few in every ILS.
- Once you have ILS, stop shipping raw ore across stars when you can smelt it locally; ship ingots.
Power Progression
Stage | Source | Notes
Very early | Wind Turbine | Weak but free; fine for the first labs
Early | Thermal Power Plant | Burns coal, graphite, hydrogen, etc.
Early–mid | Solar Panel | Scales with star luminosity; best near bright stars
Mid | Geothermal Power Station | Placed on volcanic planets (if available)
Mid | Mini Fusion Power Plant | Runs on Deuterium Fuel Rods
Late | Ray Receiver | Receives power from your Dyson Swarm/Sphere; can make Critical Photons
Endgame | Artificial Star | Burns Antimatter Fuel Rods
Accumulators store energy for night or bursts. Energy Exchangers charge and discharge them, which lets you move energy between planets with logistics.
Rare Resources
Rare veins appear on certain planets and skip or simplify expensive chains. Look at planet details before settling.
Rare resource | Replaces / helps
Fire Ice | Graphene (via a simpler recipe) and Hydrogen
Kimberlite Ore | Diamond
Fractal Silicon | Crystal Silicon
Optical Grating Crystal | Photon Combiner inputs
Spiniform Stalagmite Crystal | Carbon Nanotube
Unipolar Magnet | Particle Container
Organic Crystal | Titanium Crystal and plastics chains
Many optimal builds are designed around using these.
Proliferator
Proliferator Mk.I–III is a spray coating that boosts machine output. Sprayed inputs either give extra products or production speedup (set in the machine). Proliferating matrices and key intermediates dramatically cuts factory size in the mid-to-late game.
Building a Dyson Sphere
- Research Solar Sail Orbit System and build EM-Rail Ejectors. They shoot Solar Sails into orbit to form a Dyson Swarm.
- Design orbits in the Dyson Sphere editor: set a swarm orbit for sails and a layer with nodes, frames, and shells for the sphere.
- Vertical Launching Silos launch Small Carrier Rockets to build nodes and frames.
- Ray Receivers on the planet collect power. With Graviton Lenses they switch to producing Critical Photons, the path to Antimatter. Patch V0.10.35.29088 reduced the automatic Graviton Lens buffer in Ray Receivers from 20 to 10.
- The first sphere goes around your home star. For huge output, move to a bright star (O or B type, or a blue giant) later.
Sails decay over time; shells and frames are permanent. Early swarms help power; the real payoff is the sphere.
The Dark Fog (Combat Mode)
Since the Rise of the Dark Fog update (December 2023), you can play with an enemy faction:
- Hives in space and Bases on planets grow over time and send attacks based on your threat level.
- Defenses include Gauss Turrets, Laser Turrets, Missile Turrets, Implosion Cannon, Plasma Turrets, Jammer Towers, Signal Towers, and the Battlefield Analysis Base (which collects drops and repairs).
- Killing Dark Fog units drops components that can shortcut recipes; the Dark Fog is also a resource.
- April 2026 (0.10.34.28524) added a Holo Beacon "Dark Fog Beaconing" function: when powered and visible at least at Local Planetary System, Hives send Relay stations to the beacon, letting you pick where they land.
- Game settings let you tune aggressiveness at the start; lower settings are very forgiving.
New in 2026
- Vegetation Transplanting and Terrain Restoration (0.10.35, September 23, 2026): cleared rocks and vegetation are collected automatically; you can replant them anywhere and restore terrain for landscaping.
- Planet memos in the Planet Information Panel and new combat music (March 2026).
- Japanese, German, and French localization with localized voiceovers (April 2026).
- The developers note a vehicle system is in development but still needs time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hand-crafting too long. Automate even small things like Gears.
- Under-building power. Brownouts slow every machine; add capacity before expanding.
- Using one belt for everything. Separate lines per product at scale.
- Leaving the home planet too late. Titanium and Silicon unlock big steps; get flight and logistic stations.
- Forgetting to fuel Icarus. Running out in space is a long walk back.
- Ignoring Proliferator. Mid-game factories get much smaller with it.
- Placing your sphere on a dim star forever. It's fine for the first, but a bright star makes a huge difference.
Advanced Tips
- Build a planetary mall: a block that automates belts, sorters, assemblers, and stations so you never hand-craft buildings.
- Plan science blocks by ratio: use the in-game production statistics panel to see bottlenecks.
- Stack Matrix Labs as high as research throughput needs.
- Import blueprints from the community for proven ratios, then modify.
- Ship finished products, not ores, between stars; ILS capacity goes further.
- Use Energy Exchangers to move surplus power from Ray Receivers to planets that need it.
- Choose a starting seed with rare resources nearby if you're replaying.
