This guide covers the PC Complete Edition of Dynasty Warriors 8 with Xtreme Legends: the combat systems that actually matter (affinity, Storm Rush, Switch Counter, Rage), how to approach Story, Free, Ambition and Challenge modes, unlocking hypothetical routes, and getting the 44 Steam achievements.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch (7 March 2019 update). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: this is a finished, single-player/local game. KOEI TECMO's last PC patch was on 7 March 2019 (crash and controller-detection fixes). The PC version has no online multiplayer, but it does support local shared/split-screen co-op, which also works through Steam Remote Play Together.

Quick Start

  • Learn the affinity triangle first. Every weapon is Heaven, Earth or Man. Man beats Heaven, Heaven beats Earth, Earth beats Man. Hitting an officer with the advantaged affinity is what opens up Storm Rush and makes fights short.
  • Carry two weapons with different affinities. You can swap mid-combo. The whole combat system is built around switching to whatever beats the officer in front of you.
  • Use Switch Counter against disadvantaged matchups. When an officer with the advantage over you winds up a heavy attack, switching weapons at the right moment performs a counter that knocks them away and puts you on the better weapon.
  • Save Rage for officers and crowds you actually need to clear. Rage mode boosts your stats, merges your Musou bars and refills them automatically for its duration.
  • Story mode unlocks hypothetical routes. At key battles, meeting extra objectives sends the story down an alternate "what if" path. Read the objective list before each stage.
  • Play Lu Bu's story early. Xtreme Legends adds a dedicated Lu Bu faction story, and it's the best XL content in the package.
  • Go into Ambition Mode once you've got a handful of characters levelled. It's the long-term progression mode and where most of the achievements live.
  • Launch the configuration tool once before your first session. It sits behind the Play button and handles resolution, controls and (for German/French) the display language.

What's in the Complete Edition

Component | What you get

Base Dynasty Warriors 8 | Wei, Wu, Shu, Jin and Other story modes, Free Mode, Ambition Mode

Xtreme Legends | Lu Bu's story, new hypothetical scenarios, five new characters, new weapon types, a revamped Ambition Mode, the new Challenge Mode

Roster | 80+ playable characters across Wei, Wu, Shu, Jin and Other

DLC on Steam | Around 21 separate packs (costumes, scenarios and so on); not included unless listed in your purchase

Achievements | 44 Steam achievements

The five characters added by Xtreme Legends are Chen Gong, Fa Zheng, Lu Lingqi, Yu Jin and Zhu Ran. There's an achievement ("New Friends") for clearing a stage with all five, so you'll use them anyway.

Core Combat

Basic attack structure

The Warriors formula hasn't changed. You have a normal attack string, and pressing the charge attack button at different points in that string gives different charge attacks. You also have a jump, a guard and a Musou (special) attack that spends Musou gauge. Some characters have EX attacks that come off particular points in the combo. There's an achievement, "Attack Ace", for beating an officer with EX Attack 1 and EX Attack 2 in the same battle.

Every character has three Musou attack types, and all three unlock as the character progresses: a standing Musou, an aerial Musou and an alternate one.

The affinity system (Heaven, Earth, Man)

Your weapon | Strong against | Weak against

Heaven | Earth | Man

Earth | Man | Heaven

Man | Heaven | Earth

The affinity icon shows above an enemy officer's health bar. What happens in each matchup:

  • Advantage: your hits break through their guard far more easily, and a chain of hits can trigger Storm Rush. That's a multi-hit sequence where you keep pressing the attack buttons, and it's the fastest way to shred an officer's health.
  • Disadvantage: the officer stops flinching as easily and can counter you. Either use Switch Counter or swap weapons before engaging.
  • Neutral: a normal fight.

Switch Counter

When an officer attacks and you have the disadvantage, switch weapons as the heavy hit comes in. You'll avoid the blow, knock the officer back and come out holding the other weapon. That's why your second weapon should be the affinity that beats your first weapon's weakness. For example, if your main weapon is Heaven (weak to Man), carry an Earth weapon, because Earth beats Man.

Rage mode

Rage fills as you fight and take hits. Activating it raises your stats, merges your Musou bars into one and refills it automatically while Rage lasts. Using a Musou during Rage gives you the character's powerful Rage Musou finisher. Good times to pop it:

  • An officer duel that's going badly.
  • A gate or base packed with enemies when the timer matters.
  • Right before a boss-tier officer (Lu Bu, for example) gets into range.

Weapons and attributes

Weapons come in star/quality tiers and can carry attributes (elemental and utility effects such as Flame, Ice, Lightning, Slash or Absorb). In Ambition Mode and the shops you can fuse weapons to move attributes onto your favourite weapon. There's an achievement ("First Fusion") for doing it the first time.

Rules of thumb:

  • On higher difficulties, a health-restoring attribute like Absorb keeps you alive better than raw damage.
  • Elemental attributes are best on attacks that hit many times or hit crowds.
  • Each character has a signature rare weapon that you unlock by meeting specific conditions in a specific stage. These are hard and usually need a higher difficulty, so check a dedicated list before trying.

Items on the field

Crates and defeated enemies drop healing food, Musou-refilling items and temporary buffs (attack, defence, speed). On harder difficulties, save healing drops for when you really need them: step past them and come back later.

Modes Explained

Story Mode

Each faction story is a string of historical battles. You pick from a few officers per stage, and the objectives change depending on who you play. At certain key battles the story branches between a historical path and a hypothetical path. You reach the hypothetical path by completing the extra conditions that show up during those battles, which usually means saving an officer who dies in history or taking a key point before a scripted event.

Xtreme Legends adds Lu Bu's story and a set of new hypothetical scenarios. There are achievements for clearing every XL stage ("Victory Call"), every XL hypothetical ("Crossroads"), every XL goal ("Goal Getter") and every XL stage on Ultimate ("Ultimate Warrior").

Story tips

  • Before a key battle, pause and read the objective log. Hypothetical triggers are usually timed.
  • Rescue objectives fail quietly. If an ally officer's health bar is dropping, drop what you're doing and go there.
  • You can replay stages to go after conditions you missed.

Free Mode

Free Mode lets you replay any unlocked stage with any unlocked character, including on the opposing side. Use it to:

  • Grind levels on a character you want to take into Ambition Mode.
  • Farm weapons and materials.
  • Chase A ratings. "Highest Rating" is one A rank; "Ultimate Rating" is an A in every XL stage.

Ambition Mode

Ambition Mode is the long-haul mode. The base game had you building the Tongquetai tower to invite Emperor Xian. Xtreme Legends reworked it into campaign play across regions: you fight a sequence of battles in an area, raise its subjugation rate, recruit officers and grow your forces.

Key systems:

System | What it does

Battle types | Skirmishes (materials), raids (fame) and large-scale battles (recruit officers)

Bodyguards | Officers who follow you into battle. You can strengthen them and order them to use battle skills

Leadership | Officers have a leadership level. Raising one to the maximum unlocks "Famous Commander"

Campaigns | Clearing areas and reaching 100% subjugation drives most of the Ambition achievements

Ambition tips

  • Early on, bring your strongest levelled character. Some campaign battles are timed, and "Expedient Leader" asks you to finish with at least 14 minutes left.
  • Order your bodyguards to use their battle skills. One achievement is for using a skill the first time, and "Skill Specialist" is for using every type.
  • "Battle Pro" wants you to finish a campaign without losing a single unit. Try it on an easier campaign, keep your bodyguards close and deal with threats to your own units first.
  • "Xtreme Speed" (100% subjugation in under two battles) and "Total Victory" (100% subjugation for a whole campaign) both reward clearing every objective on the map rather than rushing to the commander.

Challenge Mode (new in Xtreme Legends)

Challenge Mode is arcade-style and scored, and it gives customizable weapons as rewards based on your score. It has five courses, each with its own "rank #1" achievement:

Course | What it's about | Achievement

Rampage | K.O. as many enemies as you can within the limit | Rampage Master

Speed Run | Reach the goal as fast as possible | Speed Run Master

Inferno | Scored course with its own rule set (read the briefing) | Inferno Master

Arena | Scored combat course (read the briefing) | Arena Master

Bridge Melee | Knock enemies off a bridge | Bridge Melee Master

"Martial Arts Master" is for ranking #1 in all five. Your rank is shown after each run, so retry a course until you top it. Build a character with high speed and wide sweeping attacks for Rampage, and fast movement for Speed Run.

Difficulty and Progression

Ultimate is the hardest setting. It's needed for several achievements: finishing a stage in under two minutes ("Lightning Speed"), killing 1,000 enemies in one battle ("Mighty Warrior"), finishing a stage without taking damage ("Matchless Warrior") and clearing every XL stage ("Ultimate Warrior").

Suggested order:

  • Play one faction story on Normal to learn the systems.
  • Play Lu Bu's story and the XL hypotheticals.
  • Level two or three favourite characters in Free Mode and build their weapons through fusion.
  • Move into Ambition Mode and push campaigns.
  • Take your best-built character into Ultimate stages and Challenge Mode.

Achievement checklist by type

Type | Examples

Cumulative | "Golden Dream" (100,000 gold total), "Carnage" (100,000 K.O.s total)

Character growth | "Seasoned Veteran" (an officer at max level), "Famous Commander" (max leadership)

Skill screen | Crossed Pike, War Trident, Art of War Scroll, Woven Cloth and Flame Bow "Expert" achievements (open the Equip Skills screen after learning each skill)

Gallery | "Story Buff", "Wallpaper Compiler", "Event Aficionado", "Movie Maven", "Musou Collector" (all secondary special weapons)

Completion | "Total Unifier" (unite all lands in Ambition Mode), "True Warrior of the 3 Kingdoms" (everything)

The cumulative gold and K.O. counters fill up naturally. Don't grind for them on their own.

PC Setup Notes

  • Configuration tool: resolution, graphics options and control settings live in the launcher's configuration tool, not in-game. Set them before your first run.
  • Language: the 2017 update made English the default. To play in German or French, set Steam's language to English and then pick the language in the configuration tool. Save data is split into three groups (English/French/German, the two Chinese versions, and Japanese), so switching between groups hides your saves.
  • Controllers: the 2019 patch fixed wrong default button layouts and misdetected buttons on some controllers. If your pad still acts strangely, remap it in the configuration tool or use Steam Input.
  • Remote desktop: fullscreen launches over remote desktop used to crash. That was patched in 2019, but windowed mode is the safe fallback.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only ever using one weapon. On Hard and above, officers with the advantage over you will punish you. Always carry a second affinity.
  • Missing hypothetical conditions. Branch objectives are often timed and pop up mid-battle. Watch the message log.
  • Letting allied officers die. In Story and Ambition, losing key allies can fail objectives or lower your rating.
  • Spending Rage on grunts. Rage is for officers and objectives with a timer.
  • Ignoring fusion. Upgraded attributes matter far more than character level on Ultimate.
  • Jumping into Ultimate with an unbuilt character. Level up and fuse attributes in Free Mode first.

Advanced Tips

  • Cancel into Switch Counter. Treat weapon switching as a defensive button, not a menu action. Good players swap constantly.
  • Storm Rush as a finisher. Break an officer's guard with the advantaged weapon, trigger Storm Rush and follow up with a Musou while they're still helpless.
  • Route before you fight on timed stages. For "Lightning Speed" (under two minutes on Ultimate), pick a fast character, ride your horse straight to the objectives and skip everything that isn't required.
  • No-damage runs. For "Matchless Warrior", choose a short stage, fight from horseback or at range, and use Musou invincibility frames when you get surrounded.
  • Bodyguard synergy. In Ambition Mode, strengthened bodyguards with well-timed battle skills can take most of the pressure off you in large-scale battles.
  • Pick up the XL events as you go. Several gallery achievements need every XL conversation event, movie and wallpaper, so clearing all XL stages and hypotheticals covers most of them.

FAQ

Does the PC version have online co-op? No. The Windows version has no online multiplayer. It supports local split-screen co-op, which you can play online with a friend through Steam Remote Play Together.

Is Xtreme Legends included, or is it DLC? The Complete Edition includes both the base Dynasty Warriors 8 content and Xtreme Legends. The separate cosmetic and scenario packs on the store are extra.

How do I unlock hypothetical stages? Meet the special conditions shown during key Story battles. They're usually rescues or objectives captured before a set time, and they send the story down the "what if" branch.

What's the hardest difficulty? Ultimate. Several achievements need it, so build a character before you try.

Who are the new Xtreme Legends characters? Chen Gong, Fa Zheng, Lu Lingqi, Yu Jin and Zhu Ran.

Why do my saves disappear after changing language? Saves are grouped by language family (EN/FR/DE, Chinese, Japanese). Switch back to your original group to see them again.

Should I play this or Dynasty Warriors: Origins? They're different games. Origins (released January 2025) follows a single original protagonist with a new combat system. DW8 XL is the big-roster, classic-style entry.
