A survival guide for DayZ: your first hour, food, water and disease, medical care, the loot path, base building, vehicles, and PvP habits that keep you alive on Chernarus, Livonia, and Sakhal.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Stable Update 1.29 (released April 8, 2026), with Update 1.30 on Experimental since September 16, 2026 and the Badlands expansion scheduled for October 15, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Water first, then food. You spawn thirsty and hungry. Well pumps (the green hand pumps in towns) give clean water. Ponds and streams can give you cholera unless you boil or purify the water.
- Make rags right away. Cut up a spare shirt into rags using a sharp tool. Rags stop bleeding, and bleeding is the number one early killer.
- Find a knife or any sharp tool. You need one for rags, opening cans cleanly, gutting animals, and crafting.
- Head inland from the coast. Coastal towns are picked clean. Villages a few kilometers inland have far better loot.
- Stay warm and dry. Rain and cold drain your energy and can give you a cold or influenza. Wear layers, carry a fire source, and avoid swimming in cold weather.
- Pay attention to status icons. Health, blood, hunger, thirst, temperature, and any disease icons tell you what's about to kill you.
- Don't trust "friendly?" by default. Keep your distance, keep your weapon ready, and ask people to put their hands up before you get close.
- Log out safely. Log out somewhere hidden. Your character stays in the world for a short countdown while you log out.
- Expect a wipe soon. Bohemia has said characters and maps wipe at the start of 1.30 Experimental and again when Badlands launches (see below), so don't over-invest in a base right now.
Default PC Controls (common ones)
Action | Key
Inventory | Tab
Interact / pick up | F
Vault / climb | V
Crouch / prone | C / Z
Freelook | Left Alt (hold)
Sprint | Shift
Raise weapon / aim | Space or Right Mouse (hold), depending on your bindings
Lean | Q / E
Gestures / emotes | Gesture radial menu (check Options > Controls for the key)
Quickbar | 1 to 0
Rebind anything under Options > Controls. Keybinds can shift between versions, so check there if something doesn't match.
Survival Systems
Hunger, thirst, and energy
- Canned food is safe. Open it with a can opener or knife to lose less food. Opening it with blunt tools spills some.
- Fruit and vegetables are fine unless rotten. Rotten food causes food poisoning.
- Raw meat risks salmonella. Cook it on a fire (stick it on a long stick or use a pot or frying pan). Burned meat has less value.
- Water: Well pumps and bottled drinks are safe. Pond and river water carries a cholera risk. Boil it in a pot or use purification tablets. Drinking from lakes is fine in an emergency if you carry medicine.
- Don't overeat or overdrink. Filling your stomach too fast makes you vomit and lose everything.
Temperature
Cold, wet clothing is dangerous. Your temperature indicator shows arrows rising or falling. Fixes:
- Change into dry clothes, or dry wet clothing near a fire.
- Wear jackets, a hat, gloves, and fleece or wool layers. Raincoats keep you dry.
- On Sakhal (the Frostline DLC map), cold is the main threat, and warmth items are a priority. Update 1.29 added more cold-weather and cross-terrain clothing.
Diseases and treatments
Condition | Usual cause | Treatment
Cholera | Untreated natural water | Tetracycline antibiotics, then rest, food, and water
Salmonella | Raw meat, dirty hands | Charcoal tablets
Food poisoning | Rotten food | Charcoal tablets
Chemical poisoning | Drinking gasoline or disinfectant | Charcoal tablets and water
Common cold / influenza | Getting cold and wet | Stay warm and dry. Tetracycline for influenza. Vitamins help prevent it.
Wound infection | Bandaging with dirty rags | Disinfect bandages or clean the wound (alcohol, disinfectant spray). Tetracycline if it gets worse.
Vitamins (Multivitamin bottles) boost your immunity and are worth carrying.
Medical care
- Bleeding: Rags or bandages stop cuts. Disinfect rags first if you can to avoid infection.
- Blood loss: Eating and drinking well restores blood over time. For big losses, use a blood bag with a blood test kit. Only matching or O-negative blood is safe. Saline bags are safe for everyone and restore some blood.
- Broken legs: You can't sprint. Make a splint (sticks plus rags or a bandage) and use morphine if you have it.
- Unconsciousness: Shock damage (from punches, blunt weapons, or falls) knocks you out. Epinephrine can wake an unconscious teammate faster.
The Loot Path
A reliable progression on Chernarus:
- Coast (first 10 minutes): Water, a can of food, any tool, a backpack if you're lucky.
- Inland villages: Clothing layers, knife, bottles and canteens, matches.
- Towns with police stations, fire stations, and hospitals: Pistols, basic medical supplies, better backpacks, and a hunting knife.
- Military zones: Assault rifles, military clothing, helmets, and plate carriers. These are the most contested areas and the most PvP-heavy.
- Hunting and fishing for long-term food. Deer, cows, and boars provide meat and pelts.
Key tools to find early: knife, axe or hatchet, can opener, cooking pot, compass and map, water canteen.
Update 1.29 buffed crafted and blunt melee weapon damage and changed spawn points so you don't keep spawning in the same area after every death.
Fire and Cooking
A fireplace needs three things:
- Kindling: rags, paper, or bark
- Fuel: sticks or firewood (chopped from trees with an axe)
- An igniter: matches, a lighter, or a hand drill (sticks and bark)
Stone circles or ovens protect fires from wind and rain. You can also use a portable gas stove for cooking without a fire.
Base Building
- Craft a fence kit or watchtower kit from sticks and rope, then add planks, nails, metal sheets, and wire.
- Tools you need: hammer, shovel, hatchet or axe, pliers (for wire and metal work), and a handsaw helps.
- Combination locks secure gates.
- Update 1.30 (Experimental) adds a construction interface that shows which tools and materials each building step needs, so you can see what's missing before you start.
- Build away from roads and popular loot spots. Most bases get raided because they're easy to see.
Vehicles
- Cars need, depending on the model: wheels, a working battery (car or truck battery), spark plug, radiator, doors, and fuel. Check what's missing by inspecting the car.
- Fill the radiator with water and the tank from gas station pumps or jerry cans.
- Vehicles are dangerous. Crashes can kill everyone inside, so drive carefully and repair with tire repair kits and tools. Update 1.29 reduced vehicle desync.
- Update 1.30 (Experimental) adds two motorbikes, a moped and an enduro, in several color variants. In Experimental, helmets and the motorcycle jacket don't yet give extra crash protection (the devs are investigating), so ride carefully.
Maps and What's Coming
Map | Access | Notes
Chernarus | Base game | The classic map with a big coastline, forests, and military bases in the north
Livonia | DLC | More forest and hunting, and harder navigation
Sakhal | Frostline DLC | Freezing volcanic island where cold management is everything
Nasdara | Badlands expansion (scheduled for October 15, 2026) | Desert map that's only in Badlands, not in Experimental
Update 1.30 / Badlands timeline: PC Experimental started September 16, 2026. Characters and maps are wiped at the start of Experimental and again when Badlands launches. 1.30 also redesigned more than 150 inventory icons, made infected pick upward, centered or downward attacks based on your position, added a running heavy infected attack, and brought back some alpha-era weapon color variants. Nasdara itself is not in Experimental.
PvP Habits
- Use Freelook to watch around you without moving your body.
- Stay off the skyline. Walking along ridgelines makes you visible from very far away.
- Move along tree lines and stop regularly to listen.
- Store ammo in magazines ahead of time. Loading mid-fight gets you killed.
- Avoid known hotspots at peak hours unless you want a fight: Tisy and NWAF on Chernarus are the classic ones.
- Split your loot. Stash important items in buried stashes or barrels so a single death doesn't cost everything.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Drinking pond water without boiling it or carrying tetracycline.
- Eating raw or rotten food.
- Sprinting everywhere while starving. Sprinting burns energy fast.
- Ignoring bleeding and running until you pass out.
- Swimming in cold weather and then freezing to death.
- Staying on the coast for your first hour and starving there.
- Trusting strangers who get close with their weapons drawn.
- Building next to a road.
Advanced Tips
- Hunting is the most sustainable food source. One deer feeds you for a long time.
- Craft improvised items: a hand drill for fire, bark bandages, a stone knife (sharp stone), a rope from rags or bark. You can survive with almost nothing.
- Carry a spare set of clothes in dry weather to swap into when it rains.
- Learn the map without the in-game map. Road signs and landmarks work, and a compass plus a paper map is the reliable way to navigate on vanilla servers.
- Check server settings. Community servers often change loot, time acceleration, and base rules. Know which ruleset you're on.
FAQ
Is DayZ worth playing solo? Yes. Solo is tense but manageable if you avoid military zones early and focus on survival.
How do I get clean water? Use the green hand pumps in towns, boil water from ponds, or use purification tablets.
What do I do if I get sick? Match the illness to its treatment. Charcoal tablets fix salmonella and food poisoning, tetracycline fixes cholera, influenza, and bad infections, and staying warm and fed helps with everything.
Will my character be wiped? Bohemia has said characters and maps wipe at the start of 1.30 Experimental and again when Badlands launches on October 15, 2026. Community servers wipe on their own schedule.
When does Badlands release, and what's in it? It's scheduled for October 15, 2026, with the desert map Nasdara. Motorbikes and the UI overhaul come through Update 1.30.
What changed in 1.29? Big server performance improvements, reworked assault rifle and pistol audio, buffed crafted and blunt melee weapons, new cold-weather clothing, better terrain blending, and spawn changes. It also brought the native Xbox Series X|S version and a Microsoft Store/Game Pass release. A July 2026 "Road to Badlands" addendum then added the SCR-17 rifle, tactical optics and desert camo variants.
