Everything a new or returning CS2 player needs to know: the economy, the current map pool, weapons, utility, settings, and how to climb in Premier and Competitive.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the "Rush Hour" update (September 22, 2026) and Premier Season 5. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • The economy decides rounds before the shooting starts. Learn when to buy, save, and force. A team that buys together beats a team with five different plans.
  • Stop moving when you shoot. Rifles are only accurate when you are standing still (or nearly so). Counter-strafe: tap the opposite movement key to stop instantly, then fire.
  • Aim at head height. Keep your crosshair where a head will appear around the next corner, so you only need to click, not drag.
  • Buy utility every round you can afford it. Smokes, flashes, and molotovs win more rounds than raw aim at every level.
  • Learn one map properly first. Mirage, Dust II, or Inferno are the friendliest starting points. Learn callouts, a couple of smokes per side, and common angles.
  • Play Deathmatch and Retakes to warm up, then Competitive or Premier for ranked games.
  • Talk with information, not emotion. "Two B, one lit 80, AWP mid" is gold. Tilted chatter loses games.
  • Default crosshair changed in September 2026. The Rush Hour update made crosshairs resolution-independent and set the default style to "Dynamic Quad" — revisit your crosshair settings if yours looks different.

Match Formats and Game Modes

Mode | Players | What it is

Premier | 5v5 | The main ranked mode. Uses the Active Duty pool with a pick/random map selection and a single CS Rating. Seasonal.

Competitive | 5v5 | Ranked per map (each map has its own Skill Group from Silver I to Global Elite). Pick the maps you want to queue.

Wingman | 2v2 | Short, one-site games on small maps. Great for learning duels.

Casual | 10v10 | Low-stakes, relaxed rules.

Deathmatch | FFA | Instant respawns, the standard aim warm-up.

Arms Race | FFA | Progress through weapons with each kill; finish with a knife kill.

Retakes | 4v3 style | Pre-planted bomb scenarios; excellent for learning site holds and retakes.

Rush (new) | 3v3 | Added in the Rush Hour update (Sept 22, 2026). Teams fight through randomly selected arenas; win a round by eliminating the enemy team (or controlling the tower when time expires) and push on to the enemy castle. A separate queued mode, not part of Premier.

Match length: Competitive and Premier use MR12 — 24 regulation rounds, first to 13 wins, sides swap after round 12. Premier games can go to overtime.

The Economy

Money is team-wide strategy. Some stable numbers:

  • You start each half with $800. Money caps at $16,000.
  • Loss bonus starts at $1,400 and grows by $500 with consecutive losses, up to $3,400. Winning rounds lowers it again.
  • Planting the bomb pays the planter a bonus, and Terrorists still get extra money after a lost round if the bomb was planted; defusing pays the defuser a bonus. Kill rewards differ by weapon class (SMGs and shotguns pay more than rifles, the AWP pays least).

Buy types

Buy | When | Typical purchase

Full buy | Everyone can afford rifle + armor + utility | AK-47 / M4 + Kevlar & Helmet + full utility

Eco (save) | Money too low for a full buy next round otherwise | Nothing, or a pistol upgrade

Force buy | Loss bonus is high or the round is critical | SMGs, Galil/FAMAS, armor, minimal utility

Half buy / light | Mixed money on the team | Upgraded pistol + armor, a couple of nades

Rule of thumb: after losing the pistol round, most teams eco the second round and full buy the third. After winning the pistol, buy SMGs or armor and keep pressure.

Key prices (standard)

Item | Price

AK-47 | $2,700

M4A4 | $3,100

M4A1-S | $2,900

AWP | $4,750

Kevlar Vest | $650

Kevlar + Helmet | $1,000

Defuse Kit (CT) | $400

Valve adjusts prices occasionally; the buy menu always shows the live figure.

Current Map Pool

As of Premier Season 5 (started July 6, 2026), the Active Duty pool is:

Map | Notes

Ancient | Mid control is everything; CTs rotate fast through Cave and Donut.

Anubis | Returned to Premier in January 2026 with tweaks to reduce its T-side advantage. Water mid is the key zone.

Cache | Back in Active Duty for Season 5 (replacing Overpass) after a seven-year absence. Originally made by FMPONE; the CS2 version returns to the classic industrial look, removes the CT mid window, and adds a boost spot at Checkers. Mid and the A main/squeaky area decide most rounds.

Dust II | Long-range duels. Long A, Mid doors and B tunnels are the three pillars.

Inferno | Utility-heavy. Banana control for both sides; molotovs and smokes are mandatory.

Mirage | The classic learning map. Mid control (Connector, Window, Short) opens both sites.

Nuke | Vertical map with two stacked sites. Outside and Ramp control matter most; learn the sound cues.

Reserve / other pools (Competitive, not Premier) include Vertigo, Train, Overpass, Boulder, Fachwerk, Office, Italy, and Shelter. Wingman (e.g. Debris, El Dorado) and Arms Race have their own smaller map sets.

How Premier map selection works now

Rush Hour replaced the old ban-down-to-one veto. Now each team picks maps (Team 1 picks one, Team 2 picks two, Team 1 picks one more), and the game randomly selects one of the four picks. Practical effect: you will play a wider variety of maps, so you need at least three or four maps you are comfortable on — not one comfort pick.

Weapons

Rifles

Weapon | Side | Why use it

AK-47 | T | One-shot headshot to helmeted players at any range. The king of CS.

M4A4 | CT | Bigger magazine, higher fire rate than the M4A1-S.

M4A1-S | CT | Suppressed, more accurate, smaller magazine. Great for holding angles.

Galil AR | T | Cheaper force-buy rifle.

FAMAS | CT | Cheaper force-buy rifle; burst mode helps at range.

SG 553 / AUG | T / CT | Scoped rifles; strong but pricier.

AWP | Both | One-shot kill to the body. Defines a team's setup.

SSG 08 (Scout) | Both | Cheap sniper for eco/force rounds; one-shot headshots, accurate while jumping at the apex.

SMGs and pistols

  • MAC-10 (T) / MP9 (CT): the default force-buy and anti-eco SMGs. High kill reward.
  • UMP-45 / MP7 / MP5-SD: solid, slightly more expensive alternatives.
  • Desert Eagle: one-shot headshot potential; the best eco pistol if you can aim.
  • Glock-18 / USP-S / P2000: the default pistols. USP-S rewards headshots.
  • Tec-9 (T) / Five-SeveN (CT) / CZ75-Auto: strong pistol-round and eco upgrades.
  • P250: the cheap, flexible upgrade.

Recoil

Every automatic weapon has a fixed spray pattern. Learn the first 10 bullets of the AK and M4 in the practice range; that covers most fights. Beyond that, reset by bursting.

Utility

Grenade | Use

Smoke | Blocks vision. In CS2, smokes are volumetric: bullets and HE grenades briefly clear holes in them.

Flashbang | Blinds anyone looking at it. Pop-flash (thrown so it bursts right as it clears cover) for entries.

Molotov (T) / Incendiary (CT) | Area denial; clears corners and delays pushes. Smokes extinguish fire.

HE Grenade | Damage; stacks well with a teammate's HE.

Decoy | Fake sound; niche.

Minimum per map: learn two smokes and one molotov for each site's execute on T side, and one retake flash per site on CT side.

Roles

Role | Job

Entry fragger | First through the door on T side; creates space.

Support | Throws the flashes and smokes that let the entry win.

AWPer | Holds long angles, gets opening picks.

Lurker | Plays away from the team to catch rotations and flank.

In-game leader (IGL) | Calls strategies and mid-round adjustments.

Anchor (CT) | Holds a site alone and delays until help arrives.

In solo queue, pick a role that fits your team: if nobody wants to entry, the round usually goes better if you just do it with a flash from a teammate.

Settings

  • Resolution: personal preference. Many players use stretched 4:3 for bigger models; native 16:9 gives more field of view. Neither is objectively "right."
  • Sensitivity: most players use low sensitivity (roughly an arm sweep for a 180-degree turn). Pick one and stop changing it.
  • Crosshair: after the Sept 2026 update, crosshair settings have their own tab and scale independently of resolution. A small static crosshair is easiest for learning precise aim.
  • Audio: use headphones and keep the in-game audio clear; footsteps and utility sounds are critical information.
  • Silent reload (new): hold the reload key to reload quietly. It takes noticeably longer than a normal reload — use it when you are hiding or holding a close angle, not mid-fight. Unscoping snipers is also silent now.

Ranked Tips

  • Premier CS Rating is a single number per season; winning consistently matters more than individual stats.
  • Competitive Skill Groups are per map — being Gold Nova on Mirage and Silver on Nuke is normal.
  • Play at least four maps in Premier now that the map is randomly chosen from team picks.
  • Warm up for 10–15 minutes in Deathmatch before ranked.
  • Mute toxic players early. It is in the scoreboard; use it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running and shooting. The single most common beginner error.
  • Buying alone. A lone rifle among four pistols usually just gets lost. Buy with the team or drop a weapon to a teammate.
  • Wide peeking into multiple angles. Clear corners one at a time ("slicing the pie").
  • Not trading. If your teammate dies, you should be close enough to kill the shooter immediately.
  • Spending every dollar on guns and nothing on utility.
  • Staying on one map. The new Premier pick system punishes a tiny map pool.
  • Saving the AWP every round. Sometimes you just need to use it.

Advanced Tips

  • Counter-strafe timing: stop, shoot, move — the first bullet is the accurate one.
  • Jiggle-peek AWPers to bait shots before committing.
  • Use sound deliberately. Walking (shift) is silent; silent reloads mean an enemy you thought was reloading may not make noise now.
  • Crosshair placement over flicks. Pre-aim common spots at head level while moving through the map.
  • Delay as CT: a molotov and a well-timed flash buys 10–15 seconds, which is often enough for a rotation.
  • Watch your own demos. Look at where you died and ask whether you had information or a teammate to trade you.
  • Use smoke physics: since grenades and shots can clear smoke briefly, an HE into a smoke followed by a quick peek can catch someone behind it.

FAQ

Is CS2 free to play? Yes, CS2 is free on Steam. Prime Status (a paid upgrade) is needed for Premier, enables item drops, and matches you with other Prime players, which generally means better-quality games.

What maps are in Premier right now? Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage, and Nuke (Premier Season 5, since July 6, 2026).

How does the new Premier map pick work? Team 1 picks one map, Team 2 picks two, Team 1 picks one more; the game randomly selects one of those four.

What is Rush mode? A queued 3v3 mode added on September 22, 2026. Teams fight through random arenas to control towers, pushing toward the enemy castle.

How do I do a silent reload? Hold the reload key instead of tapping it. It is slower than a normal reload.

What is the best gun in CS2? The AK-47 on T side and the M4A1-S or M4A4 on CT side. The AWP is the strongest single weapon if you can use it.

How many rounds is a match? MR12: first to 13 wins, sides swap after 12 rounds.
