This guide covers Call of Pripyat: how the Zone works, how to survive your first hours in Zaton, gear and upgrade progression, the story outline across the three regions, side-quest advice that affects the endings, and what to know about the 2025 Enhanced Edition and mods.

Researched September 2026, current as of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Enhanced Edition (released 20 May 2025; original version still included). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Save often, in multiple slots. The Zone kills without warning, and some mistakes (a bad fight, a quest outcome) are worth reloading.
  • Watch your weight. Overloaded, you can barely move. Sell junk and carry only the ammo types your guns use.
  • Bandages first, medkits second. Bleeding kills slowly but surely. Bandage as soon as the bleed icon shows.
  • When an emission warning sounds, run for shelter immediately. Buildings, tunnels and marked shelters protect you. Out in the open, you die.
  • Throw bolts at suspected anomalies to reveal them. Anomalies are often nearly invisible.
  • Artifacts spawn in anomaly fields and need a detector to find. Better detectors reveal rarer artifacts.
  • Repair before you sell. Degraded gear can't be sold until it's repaired, and worn weapons jam.
  • Do side quests. They earn money, gear, allies and upgrade tools, and they change which ending slides you get.
  • Night is dangerous. Mutants such as the Chimera hunt at night. Travel by day, or stick close to safe hubs after dark.

Story Setup

You play Major Alexander Degtyarev of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). After five military helicopters crash in the Zone during Operation Fairway, you're sent in undercover as a stalker to find out what happened. The investigation takes you through three large regions and eventually brings you face to face with Strelok, the protagonist of Shadow of Chernobyl.

The Three Regions

Region | Hub | What's there

Zaton | Skadovsk (a beached ship turned stalker base) | Swamps, crash sites, your first quests and traders

Yanov / Jupiter | Yanov station | The Jupiter plant, Kopachi village, a scientists' presence, and the Duty/Freedom standoff

Pripyat | A military-held stronghold | The abandoned city, Laboratory X8, and the endgame

The route from Yanov to Pripyat is its own major story beat. You'll need to find a way through, and the game makes you prepare for it.

Factions

Faction | Attitude | Notes

Loners | Friendly | Ordinary stalkers; most side quests

Duty | Friendly to you, hostile to Freedom | Military-style order

Freedom | Friendly to you, hostile to Duty | Anarchist stalkers

Bandits | Usually hostile, some deals possible | Several quests let you side with or against them

Mercenaries | Hostile/neutral | Well-armed contractors

Military | Situational | Relevant to Operation Fairway and Pripyat

Scientists | Friendly | Research quests, artifacts, special gear

Monolith | Hostile | Fanatics guarding the center

Zombified stalkers | Hostile | Mind-wiped stalkers

The Duty vs Freedom conflict in Yanov is the main faction choice. How you handle it (including keeping the peace) feeds into the ending.

Survival Systems

Health, bleeding and radiation

  • Bleeding: bandages stop it. Medkits restore health and some reduce bleeding.
  • Radiation: anti-radiation drugs clear it, and vodka helps a little. Irradiated zones show on your Geiger counter.
  • Psi-effects: some areas and mutants attack your mind. Specific suits and artifacts protect against them.
  • Food: eat regularly or your stamina suffers.

Emissions

Random emissions hit the whole Zone. When the warning comes you'll have a short window to reach shelter. Hubs, buildings with roofs and marked shelters on the map are safe. A special drug can let you survive an emission in the open, but shelter is the reliable answer. Plan your trips so you're never too far from cover.

Anomalies and artifacts

  • Anomalies (electrical, chemical, thermal, gravitational) are the Zone's traps. Bolts reveal them.
  • Artifacts form inside anomaly fields after emissions. Use your detector: the starting model finds only common artifacts, and later models find rarer ones.
  • Artifacts give bonuses and drawbacks. Many add radiation. Balance your belt with radiation-absorbing artifacts or protective gear.
  • Sell or keep? Early artifacts are a major money source. Later, keep the ones that fit your build (stamina, bleed resistance, protection).

Money and Traders

Each hub has a trader and usually a technician. Money comes from quests, artifacts and selling weapons (repair first). Don't sell every artifact early. Some are worth far more to you equipped.

Gear and Upgrades

The upgrade system

Weapons and armor can be upgraded by technicians at the hubs. Upgrades come in tiers, and higher tiers need special tool kits you find in the world:

Tier | Requirement (item category)

Basic upgrades | Available from technicians

Mid-tier | Tools for rough work

Advanced | Tools for fine work

Top tier | Calibration tools

Bring tool kits to a technician to unlock their higher upgrade tiers. The kits are hidden in the world or earned through quests. Talk to technicians to get hints about where they are.

Upgrade priorities:

  • Your main weapon's accuracy and recoil, then damage.
  • Armor carry weight and protection, matched to the dangers you face (radiation, anomalies or bullets).
  • Don't upgrade gear you'll soon replace. Upgrades are expensive, and a found weapon may be better than an upgraded starter.

Armor progression

Suits range from light stalker jackets to heavy options. Scientific suits like the SEVA have strong anomaly and psi protection. Exoskeletons give huge protection and carry weight but slow you down (upgrades can help). Pick the suit that fits the next region's threats.

Mutants

Mutant | Threat | Tip

Blind dogs and pseudodogs | Fast packs | Back into a corner; shotgun

Bloodsucker | Invisible ambusher | Listen for breathing; shotgun at close range

Snork | Leaping attacker | Keep moving; aim for the head

Controller | Psi attacks | Break line of sight, then close in fast

Burer | Telekinetic; rips weapons away | Fight in close with a spare weapon; new in CoP

Chimera | Extremely dangerous night predator | Avoid at night; heavy weapons and grenades; new in CoP

Pseudogiant | Shockwave stomp | Keep distance and jump the shockwave

Side Quests and Endings

Call of Pripyat is built around side quests. The endings are shown as a series of slides reflecting the fate of the places and people you affected: Skadovsk, Yanov's factions, the stalkers you helped, and Degtyarev himself.

Tips for good outcomes:

  • Help stalkers in need. Many are named allies who show up later or affect the ending.
  • Resolve the Duty/Freedom tension peacefully where the game offers it.
  • Deal with bandit conflicts thoughtfully. Some bandit quests can go either way.
  • Keep companions alive during the push to Pripyat. Their survival matters for the finale and the slides.
  • Talk to everyone at each hub before leaving. Quests often chain.

Region Tips

Zaton. Get a feel for the shelters and the Skadovsk hub. Take jobs from the stalkers there, investigate the crash sites, and look for your first upgrade tools. Don't rush into the far corners of the map until you've upgraded your suit.

Yanov / Jupiter. Build relationships with both Duty and Freedom. Explore the Jupiter plant and Kopachi carefully, as both are dangerous. Stock up before heading toward Pripyat.

Pripyat. A dense urban map with Monolith and mutants. Lean on your allies, work through your remaining quests, and prepare for Laboratory X8. Save before entering underground areas.

PC Notes, Enhanced Edition and Mods

Enhanced Edition (May 2025)

  • Released on 20 May 2025 as part of Legends of the Zone Trilogy Enhanced Edition, with improved lighting (godrays, screen-space reflections, global illumination), better textures and models, new water shaders, updated skyboxes, 4K cinematics and a wider FOV.
  • Owners of the original get the Enhanced Edition free, and buyers of the Enhanced Edition also get the original.
  • Adds Steam Workshop mod support, cloud saves, full gamepad support, Steam Deck optimization and achievements.

Original version fixes

  • In June 2023 GSC patched the R2 renderer (Full Dynamic Lighting, DX9) to fix freezing on 12th-gen and newer Intel CPUs on Windows 11. The fix changed only xrRender_R2.dll.
  • A public Steam beta branch called "pre-win11-patch" points to the version from before that patch, useful if older mods need it.

Mods

  • The Steam Workshop is the easiest way to mod the Enhanced Edition.
  • Big community overhauls such as Anomaly and the GAMMA modpack built on it are hugely popular. They have their own installers and requirements, so follow their official guides.
  • Keep mods for the original and the Enhanced Edition separate. They aren't guaranteed to be compatible.

Multiplayer

The store lists four multiplayer modes for up to 32 players per map. The community is small these days, so expect few active servers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring emissions warnings. Always head for shelter immediately.
  • Carrying too much. You can't outrun anything while overloaded.
  • Selling unrepaired gear. You can't, and trying wastes time.
  • Walking into anomalies at night. Use your flashlight and bolts.
  • Wearing radiation-heavy artifacts without protection.
  • Rushing the main quest. Side quests give you the gear, allies and outcomes that matter.
  • Mixing mods between the original and the Enhanced Edition.

Advanced Tips

  • Upgrade one weapon deeply rather than spreading money across several.
  • Build an artifact belt that covers your weaknesses (bleed, stamina, radiation).
  • Scout at dusk for artifacts close to a shelter so emissions don't catch you exposed.
  • Use suppressed or long-range weapons against mutants you can pick off from a distance.
  • Check the PDA for markers after conversations. Quest leads often appear there quietly.

FAQ

Is the Enhanced Edition free if I own the original? Yes. Owners of the original get it free, and Enhanced Edition buyers get the original too.

Does Call of Pripyat have multiple endings? Yes. The ending slides depend on your choices and who survives.

Do I need to play the earlier games first? No. CoP stands on its own, though Strelok's appearance means more if you've played Shadow of Chernobyl.

The game freezes on my new Intel CPU. What do I do? Update the game. GSC's June 2023 patch fixed R2 renderer freezes on 12th-gen and newer Intel systems, and the Enhanced Edition is a newer build again.

What are the best mods? For a lightly modded experience, browse the Enhanced Edition's Steam Workshop. For a total overhaul, Anomaly/GAMMA are the popular choices, but they're separate projects with their own install steps.

How do I survive emissions? Get to a building, tunnel or marked shelter as soon as you hear the warning.
