A guide to surviving the Zone in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: how anomalies, artifacts, radiation and emissions work, managing weight, money and gear upgrades, fighting mutants and humans, and what Update 2.0 and the Cost of Hope expansion add.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 2.0 with patch 2.0.6 (18 September 2026) and the Cost of Hope expansion. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Where the Game Is Now

  • Cost of Hope (paid expansion) and the free Update 2.0 arrived in August 2026 (Cost of Hope released 20 August 2026). The expansion adds new explorable areas: the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the Iron Forest, Lymansk, and an explorable part of the SIRCAA facility. Its story follows the conflict between Freedom and Duty after their treaty breaks down. GSC has said it's the first of a planned trilogy of expansions.
  • Patches since: 2.0.2 (23 Aug), 2.0.3 (25 Aug, launch crash fix; Steam Points items went live), 2.0.4 (28 Aug, quest fixes including Cost of Hope missions), 2.0.5 (10 Sep, over 200 fixes), and 2.0.6 (18 Sep, AMD GPU crash fixes).
  • Zone Kit Phase 2 (1 September 2026): the official modding toolkit now supports visual quest scripting, text and voice editing, custom sounds, save/load of mod data, and Play In Editor testing.
  • Mods warning: GSC recommends disabling mods if you hit crashes after an update, since patches can break them.

Quick Start

  • Throw bolts. Bolts reveal anomalies in your path. They're free and infinite. Use them whenever the air distorts or your detector ticks.
  • Watch your weight. Carrying too much slows you and drains stamina. Sell or stash junk often.
  • Keep your gear repaired. Weapons and armour wear out. Worn guns jam more; worn armour protects less. Technicians repair and upgrade.
  • Eat and sleep. Hunger and fatigue build up over time. Eat food and sleep in beds at safe hubs.
  • Carry bandages, medkits, and anti-rads. Bleeding and radiation are the two most common killers.
  • When an emission starts, get indoors. The sky turns red and your PDA warns you. Find shelter or die.
  • Loot stashes. Stash locations appear on your PDA from bodies and quest givers. Stashes hold ammo, gear and money.
  • Save manually. The game autosaves, but manual saves before dangerous areas prevent lost progress.
  • Don't fight every mutant. Many fights aren't worth the ammo. Walk around.

Core Systems

Health and Status

Status | Cause | Fix

Bleeding | Gunshots, mutant attacks | Bandages, medkits

Radiation | Radioactive zones, artifacts, contaminated food | Anti-rad drugs, vodka (less effective), leave the area

Hunger | Time | Food (bread, sausage, canned food)

Fatigue | Time awake | Sleep in a bed

Stamina drain | Running, weight | Energy drinks, carry less

Psi damage | Psi-emitting areas and mutants | Psi-block drugs, leave the area

Chemical / thermal / electric damage | Anomalies | Protective armour, artifacts, avoid anomalies

Anomalies

  • Anomalies are invisible or partly visible traps. Each deals a type of damage: thermal, electric, chemical, gravitational, and so on.
  • Signs: Distorted air, sparks, heat haze, debris floating, acid puddles.
  • Bolts: Throw a bolt ahead; it triggers the anomaly and shows you where it is.
  • Anomaly fields often contain artifacts.

Artifacts

  • Artifacts are found in anomaly fields using a detector. Better detectors show artifacts more clearly and at longer range.
  • Equip them in your armour's artifact slots. They give bonuses (stamina, weight, protection), but many emit radiation, so pair them with anti-radiation artifacts or gear.
  • Sell artifacts you don't need; they're one of the best sources of money.

Emissions

  • Emissions are deadly psi-storms. Your PDA warns you, then the sky turns red.
  • Take shelter indoors in any building marked safe. Staying outside kills you.

Money and Trading

  • Coupons are the Zone's currency. You earn them from quests, selling loot and artifacts.
  • Traders in hubs buy items at a fraction of their value. Damaged gear sells for less; repair first if the repair is cheap.
  • Technicians repair and upgrade weapons and armour. Upgrades are some of the best uses of money.

Gear and Upgrades

  • Weapons: Pistols, SMGs, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles. Pick one or two primary guns and invest in them.
  • Ammo: Common calibres are easier to keep stocked. Pick a main gun that uses ammo you find often.
  • Armour: Suits have different protections (ballistic, anomaly, radiation, psi) and artifact slots. Heavy suits protect more but weigh more.
  • Helmets: Separate slot on some suits; they protect against headshots.
  • Upgrade priority: Accuracy and reliability on your main gun; ballistic protection and carry weight on armour.

Enemies

Mutants

Mutant | Threat | Tip

Blind dogs / Pseudodogs | Packs | Shotgun, back into a corner

Flesh / Boars | Charge | Sidestep, shoot while they turn

Snorks | Leap attacks | Shotgun at close range

Bloodsucker | Invisible, heavy damage | Listen for breathing, shotgun when it appears

Poltergeist | Throws objects | Shoot the glowing core

Burer | Telekinesis, shields | Close in when its shield drops

Controller | Psi attacks | Break line of sight, close in fast

Pseudogiant | Shockwave slams | Keep distance, lots of ammo

Chimera | Fast, high damage | Heavy weapons, keep moving

Humans

  • Bandits, mercenaries, faction soldiers and Monolith fanatics use cover and flank.
  • Headshots are key: armour soaks body shots.
  • Use grenades to flush enemies out of cover.

Early Game Plan

  • Follow the main story to the first settlement, Zalissya. It's your first hub with a trader, a technician and a bed. Don't wander far before that.
  • Take every side job the hub offers. Early side missions pay in coupons and gear, and they teach you the map.
  • Loot bodies after every fight for ammo, meds and PDA stash markers. Leave heavy low-value weapons behind.
  • Sell junk weapons, keep ammo. Broken rifles sell for little and weigh a lot; carry only what you'll use or can sell well.
  • Buy or find a better detector early. Artifacts are the fastest money in the game.
  • Upgrade your first good rifle at the technician once you find one you like.
  • Keep a stash near your hub. Store spare armour, ammo and artifacts so you can travel light.

Inventory and Weight Management

  • Ammo, grenades and food add up. Check your weight regularly.
  • Drop or sell duplicate weapons; keep one primary and one sidearm for most of the game.
  • Energy drinks restore stamina when you're overloaded and need to walk out of trouble.
  • Some artifacts and armour upgrades raise carry weight. They're worth prioritising for long trips.

Performance and Settings

  • The game is demanding. Upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS depending on your GPU) and frame generation make a large difference.
  • Patch 2.0.6 targeted AMD GPU crashes; if you crashed before it, update and try again.
  • If you use mods and hit crashes after an update, disable them first, as GSC recommends.
  • For support, GSC points players to its support site at support.stalker2.com.

Factions

  • Base game: the story revolves around Ward, Spark (led by Scar), Noontide, SIRCAA and other groups. Your choices shape which of the four endings you get.
  • Cost of Hope: Freedom and Duty go to war after their treaty collapses; the expansion's story is about this conflict.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running into anomalies. Slow down and throw bolts in anomaly areas.
  • Carrying everything. Overloading slows you and drains stamina. Sell or stash.
  • Letting gear degrade. Worn weapons jam at the worst time.
  • Fighting mutants you can avoid. Ammo is precious early.
  • Skipping food and sleep. Status penalties stack up.
  • Staying outside during an emission. It's deadly.
  • Playing heavily modded after an update. Disable mods first if the game crashes.

Advanced Tips

  • Artifact builds: Stack stamina and carry-weight artifacts for long trips, plus one anti-radiation artifact.
  • Upgrade one gun fully rather than half-upgrading several.
  • Stash runs: Collect stash markers and loot them on the way to other objectives.
  • Use suppressed weapons for stealthy human fights.
  • Night vision and flashlights: Some areas are dark; night can be dangerous but is great for stealth.
  • Difficulty: Play on Stalker (normal) for a first run. Veteran is for players who know the systems.
