A guide to Gray Matter's 2001 WWII-meets-occult shooter: the campaign mission by mission, weapons and enemies, stealth tips, multiplayer classes, and how to get it running well on a modern PC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (Bethesda, August 2007) and the community source ports built on the GPL source code (released August 12, 2010). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Save often. It's a 2001 PC shooter with free saving. Quicksave before every door, and keep rotating a few manual saves.
- Headshots matter. Human enemies go down much faster with head hits; aim high with rifles and SMGs.
- Stealth is optional but rewarded. Some early levels let you avoid triggering alarms; alarms bring reinforcements, and a few objectives fail if you're spotted.
- Kick doors and use the environment. You can kick, lean, and use a knife for silent kills.
- Pick up everything. Ammo is shared between some weapons of the same calibre, food and medkits heal, and armor soaks damage.
- Hunt for treasure. Hidden rooms contain gold treasure that counts toward your end-of-level stats.
- Learn the special weapons. The Tesla Gun, Venom (rotary gun) and Flamethrower are tuned for specific enemies — undead and monsters especially.
- Play on a source port. The Steam build runs, but community ports (ioRTCW, RealRTCW) fix widescreen, resolution and stability on modern Windows.
Story Setup
It's 1943. U.S. Army Ranger William "B.J." Blazkowicz and British operative Agent One investigate the SS Paranormal Division, commanded in the field by Oberführer Helga von Bülow. Himmler's occultists are digging into the legend of Heinrich I, a Saxon warlock-king from 943 AD, while the scientist Deathshead builds super-soldiers. B.J. is captured and has to escape Castle Wolfenstein — and things escalate from there.
Campaign Walkthrough
The campaign spans 27 levels in 7 missions. Each mission starts with a briefing, some end in a boss, and objectives range from reaching an exit to killing specific officers, collecting documents, or not being detected.
Stage | Location | What happens | Key threat
Opening | Castle Wolfenstein dungeons and grounds | B.J. escapes the castle after Agent One is killed; you meet the resistance member Kessler in a nearby village | Guards and alarms
The dig | Village, catacombs and the Defiled Church | The SS excavates a church looking for a "Dark Knight"; Professor Zemph's experiments; Helga takes the Thulian Dagger of Warding and awakens Olaric | Zombies, Olaric (boss)
The rocket base | Katamarunde, on the Baltic coast | Destroy a V-2 rocket with a biological warhead aimed at London, then steal a Kobra rocket-plane | Soldiers, stealth-sensitive objectives
Kugelstadt | Factory and Deathshead's secret weapons facility | With the Kreisau Circle resistance, you find the Venom gun prototype and meet Lopers; Deathshead slips away before you can reach him | Lopers, heavy troops
Norway | X-Labs | Recover Deathshead's journal; destroy an Übersoldat prototype | Übersoldat (boss), Lopers
Operation Resurrection | Bramburg Dam, Paderborn, Chateau Schufstaffel | Assassinate SS Paranormal officers; more Übersoldaten | Snipers, Übersoldaten
Finale | Castle Wolfenstein excavation site | Marianna Blavatsky turns Übersoldaten into Dark Knights and raises Heinrich I | Dark Knights, undead Blavatsky, Heinrich I (final boss)
Boss tips
- Olaric: keep moving, stay out of melee range, and pour in your heaviest weapon. The Flamethrower and explosives are strong against the undead in general.
- Übersoldat: heavily armored and armed. Use cover, strafe constantly, and hit it with explosives and your highest-damage automatic weapon. Don't fight it in the open.
- Heinrich I: deal with the smaller undead first so they don't box you in, keep circling, and dump Tesla/Venom/explosive ammo you've saved for the end. Save your best ammo from the last few levels.
Weapons
Weapon | Type | Best use
Knife | Melee | Silent kills from behind
Luger / Colt | Pistols | Early backup; silenced pistol play for stealth
MP40 / Thompson / Sten | SMGs | Main close-to-mid weapons; the Sten is suppressed but overheats
Mauser rifle | Bolt-action rifle | Headshots at range; can be scoped
Snooper rifle | Scoped rifle with night sight | Dark levels and long sightlines
FG42 | Paratroop rifle | Automatic fire with a scope option
Grenades | Explosives | Rooms, groups; cook carefully
Dynamite | Explosive | Objectives and big groups
Panzerfaust | Rocket launcher | Heavy enemies, bosses
Flamethrower | Close-range fire | Undead and groups in corridors
Venom | Rotary gun | Übersoldaten and bosses
Tesla Gun | Electric weapon | Chains through groups; excellent vs. undead
Ammo discipline: SMGs chew through ammo. Use rifles on distant targets and the knife on unaware guards so you arrive at boss fights with heavy ammo stocked.
Enemies
Enemy | Notes
Wehrmacht/SS soldiers | Standard troops; alarms bring more
Elite guards and officers | Tougher, often assassination targets
Undead (zombies and warriors) | Appear in the crypts and church levels; fire and Tesla are best
Lopers | Mutant lab creatures that close distance fast with electric attacks; back-pedal and focus fire
Übersoldaten | Armored super-soldiers with heavy weapons; use explosives and cover
Olaric, Heinrich I | Occult bosses
Stealth Tips
- Alarms are often wall-mounted boxes; enemies run to them when they spot you. Kill runners first.
- Crouch-walk and avoid running on noisy surfaces near guards.
- The knife is a one-hit kill from behind on unaware soldiers.
- Some objectives require not triggering an alarm; if one sounds, reload.
- Suppressed weapons (Sten, silenced pistol) keep noise down, but a missed shot still alerts nearby guards.
Secrets and Treasure
- Each level tracks secrets found and treasure collected on the end-of-level stats screen.
- Look for suspicious wall textures, paintings, breakable crates and dead ends — many secret rooms are behind pushable or breakable walls.
- Treasure is purely for completion; don't risk a long fight chasing it.
Multiplayer
RtCW's multiplayer is team-based and objective-focused: Axis vs. Allies with four classes. It inspired Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
Class | Role
Soldier | Heavy weapons (e.g., Venom, Panzerfaust, Flamethrower)
Medic | Heals and revives teammates
Engineer | Completes objectives: plants/defuses dynamite, repairs
Lieutenant | Hands out ammo and calls airstrikes/artillery
Play styles: objective, stopwatch (teams swap sides and race each other's time) and checkpoint. As of 2026 activity is limited to community servers; the modern ports and a small community keep it alive. For a free team-based alternative, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is the natural next step.
Running It on a Modern PC
Option | What it is | Why use it
Steam version | The 2007 Bethesda re-release | Works, but is a 4:3-era build with dated options
ioRTCW | Community source port based on the 2010 GPL source | Modern resolutions, widescreen, stability fixes, multiplayer support
RealRTCW | Community overhaul, released on Steam in October 2020 (requires RtCW) | Modernized single-player with new features and fixes
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Single-Player & Cooperative | Community mod listed on Steam | Restores a single-player/co-op campaign for Enemy Territory
Console tips (single-player): RtCW uses the Quake III-style console, opened with the tilde key. Enabling developer/cheat mode requires launching with the relevant startup parameters; community guides document the exact commands. Cheats disable nothing permanent since there are no achievements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not saving. Deaths come fast and there are no checkpoints to lean on.
- Wasting heavy ammo early. Keep Venom, Tesla and Panzerfaust ammo for Lopers, Übersoldaten and bosses.
- Letting alarm runners escape. One alarm can turn a clean infiltration into a slog — or fail the objective.
- Fighting Lopers at range with pistols. Use high-damage weapons and keep your distance.
- Playing the stock build at a stretched resolution. Use a source port instead.
Advanced Tips
- Lean around corners to get the first shot without exposing yourself.
- Headshots with the Mauser clear rooms fast and save SMG ammo.
- Kick open doors while standing to the side — enemies fire at the doorway.
- Flamethrower in narrow corridors against undead is devastating; don't use it at long range.
- Explosive barrels and fuel often sit near groups of guards — use them.
- Re-read briefings. Mission-fail conditions (no alarms, don't kill certain people) are listed there.
