How FPS Chess works (chess where every capture is a first-person duel), what each piece set does, how the 2026 balance patches changed things, and how to win more duels and games.

Researched September 2026. Current as of Version 1.2.10 (September 17, 2026). The game is actively patched and balance changes often, so check the linked patch notes if something differs.

What FPS Chess Is

FPS Chess is a free-to-play game from Meta Fork and Evergreen Games that started as a DigiPen student project (released July 16, 2022). You play a normal game of chess, but a capture isn't automatic. The two pieces fight a 1v1 first-person duel in a 3D room, and the winner takes the square. The loser's piece is removed, even if it was the attacker. Your chess plan only matters if you can win the fights.

  • Modes: online (lobbies, invite a friend), LAN, local split-screen, and since 1.2.8 a Practice Range.
  • Piece sets: Original (base game), Shiny (free, added in 1.1.0, February 2023) and Wood (in the paid FPS Chess: Ignition DLC, 1.2.0, June 2026, along with a Remastered version of the original map).
  • Board editor: build custom boards and mix piece sets.
  • Reviews: Very Positive on Steam.
  • Development: the developer is focused on FPS Chess 2. FPS Chess still gets weekly or bi-weekly patches, and the developer says patches will now be larger and less frequent.

Quick Start

  • Every capture is a gamble. A knight attacking a queen can lose. Only attack when you're confident in the duel, or when losing the piece is acceptable.
  • Learn your kit in the Practice Range (Local, then Practice Range, since 1.2.8). You can pick any piece, test its abilities, and shoot at a simple AI.
  • Know which duels you're good at. Some players are great with hitscan pieces and bad with projectile pieces. Plan captures around your strengths.
  • The king fights too. Checkmate isn't a guaranteed win if the king's duel goes badly for you. The king's melee kit is dangerous up close.
  • Use blocking. Pieces can block, and some attacks (like Original Knight arrows) are tuned to break blocks. Don't block against block-breakers.
  • Movement matters as much as aim. Grapples, glides, flight and launches decide who gets the high ground.
  • Set your sensitivity. 1.2.6 added controller-specific sensitivity options and 1.2.7 raised the maximum controller sensitivity and the FPS cap.
  • Try Shiny and Wood pieces in custom boards before relying on them in ranked-style games with strangers.

How a Match Flows

  • Chess phase: take turns moving pieces as in normal chess.
  • Duel phase: when a move would capture, both players drop into an FPS arena as the two pieces involved.
  • Resolution: the winner holds the square. Promotion and endgame rules follow chess, and the developer has fixed several promotion edge cases in 2026 patches.
  • King capture: you win by taking the king in a duel.

Game options worth knowing:

  • Time-limited duel (added 1.2.2): after a set time, the playable area starts shrinking to force the fight. Since 1.2.3 a timer shows at the top of the screen.
  • Lobby profanity filter (1.2.3), with a setting to bypass it (1.2.4).
  • Remastered map (Ignition DLC): the reimagined arena. Expect different sightlines from the original map.

Piece Sets and Toolkits

Only verified details are listed below. Where a piece's exact kit isn't confirmed in patch notes or the store page, the table says so rather than guessing.

Original set

Piece | Kit (verified details) | Duel notes

Pawn | Gun with damage falloff (falloff reduced in 1.2.7 and again in 1.2.10) | Better at range than before. Punishes pieces that stay at mid range.

Knight | Arrows (extra damage to breaking block since 1.2.7) and a charge attack | Pressure blockers. Use the charge to finish or to close distance.

Bishop | Explosives and a glide. Can't block while gliding (1.2.2) | Take the air, rain explosives, land in cover.

Rook | Scoped sniper, grapple (with a success indicator since 1.2.7, slightly shorter range), up to 2 walls at once | Hold long sightlines. Walls buy time to scope.

Queen | Automatic weapon (the store page calls it a "randomly sprayed machine gun") | Wins close-to-mid fights through volume of fire.

King | Sword | Lethal up close. Keep your distance and never let it corner you.

Shiny set (free, 1.1.0)

Piece | Kit (verified details) | Notes

Pawn | Primary fire plus a sword | The sword damage was fixed so it no longer overperforms (1.1.1)

Knight | Crossbow with a rapid-fire ability | Crossbow damage lowered in 1.2.5 and 1.2.6. The rapid-fire can no longer headshot.

Bishop | Explosive-based kit | A fix stopped it taking hits from too-distant explosions (1.2.3)

Queen | Can grab the enemy and drag them into a train | Since 1.2.3 she lets go after 10 seconds, and since 1.2.6 she releases after the drag

Rook, King | Unique kits. Details not listed in patch notes. | Test them in the Practice Range.

Wood set (FPS Chess: Ignition DLC, 1.2.0)

Piece | Kit (verified details) | Notes

Pawn | Burst-fire gun and a jump with a cooldown | Both burst and jump cooldown were nerfed in 1.2.2

Knight | Slingshot with explosive projectiles | 1.2.7: slightly less damage and fire rate, bigger projectile and explosion hitbox

Bishop | Rockets and a glide | 1.2.10 greatly improved explosive responsiveness for all black bishops (Original, Shiny and Wood) and made Wood rockets phase through players less often

Rook | Steam launch (mobility) | 1.2.6 fixed a bug that let it block invisibly. Steam launch cooldown raised from 5 to 7 seconds (1.2.1)

Queen | Flight, flamethrower and laser | Heavily tuned: flamethrower range limited, laser does direct damage but less of it, can't flame while lasering, horizontal flight speed nerfed (1.2.10)

King | Charged attack (with a charge indicator) and a barrier | Barrier cooldown up and duration down in 1.2.7. The gap under the barrier was removed (1.2.3).

Duel Fundamentals

Skill | How to practice

Tracking aim | Queen and Pawn duels. Keep your crosshair on the target while strafing.

Flick/precision | Rook duels. Pre-aim common angles and peek from cover.

Projectile leading | Knight and Bishop. Lead moving targets and aim at feet for splash.

Spacing | King duels. Stay out of sword range, or deliberately bait swings.

Movement | Grapples, glides, flight. Height usually wins.

Arena tips:

  • Learn the room. Furniture, a chandelier and windows affect sightlines and projectiles (the developer has patched collision on several of these).
  • Break line of sight when an ability is on cooldown. Re-engage once it's back.
  • In time-limited duels, don't retreat into the area that's about to shrink.

Chess Strategy in an FPS World

  • Material value changes. A piece's chess value matters less than your win rate with it. If you win almost every Rook duel, trade aggressively with Rooks.
  • Use defended squares. If the attacker loses a duel, the square doesn't change hands, but a defended piece still adds pressure because a winning attacker can then be challenged.
  • Don't blunder the king into a bad matchup. Keep the king away from the opponent's best duelist.
  • Pawn promotion is powerful. A promoted queen is a strong duelist in most sets.
  • Checkmate still needs a win. Build up threats so a lost king duel doesn't cost you the game.

Settings Checklist

Setting | Recommendation | Patch reference

Mouse/controller sensitivity | Pick one sensitivity and stick with it. Controllers now have their own sensitivity options. | 1.2.6, 1.2.7

Max FPS | Raise it to match your monitor's refresh rate | 1.2.7 raised the cap

Fullscreen/resolution | Set it once in the menu. Behavior was improved in 1.2.5. | 1.2.5

Lobby profanity filter | On by default. There's a setting to bypass it. | 1.2.3, 1.2.4

Time-limited duel | Turn it on for faster games or to stop stalling | 1.2.2

A Simple Improvement Plan

  • Week 1: Practice Range only. Learn all six Original pieces and note which ones feel natural.
  • Week 2: Local or friend games with the Original set. Play chess normally, but only take captures where your piece favors the duel.
  • Week 3: Add Shiny pieces through the board editor. Learn the Shiny Queen's train drag and the Shiny Knight's crossbow.
  • Week 4+: Public lobbies. Write down the matchups you keep losing and drill them on custom boards.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Playing pure chess. Trading a queen for a pawn because "it's defended" ignores the duel.
  • Blocking against block-breakers. Original Knight arrows are tuned to break blocks.
  • Chasing a King into melee range. The sword wins those fights.
  • Wasting mobility cooldowns. Grapple, steam launch and glide are how you escape. Don't open with them.
  • Ignoring patch notes. Balance changes most weeks. Last month's strongest piece may not be strongest now.
  • Skipping the Practice Range. It's the fastest way to learn an unfamiliar kit.

Advanced Tips

  • Scout your opponent. Notice which piece types they lose with and force those duels.
  • Play the queen for area denial. Wood Queen flight plus flamethrower controls space, but since 1.2.10 her horizontal flight is slower, so commit to angles.
  • Rook walls: you can place two walls at once (1.2.7). Build a quick scoping nest.
  • Custom boards: set up drills (all rooks, all kings) with the board editor to train one matchup.
  • Controller play: use the 1.2.6 controller sensitivity options and the 1.2.4 controller rework. Steam Deck support is a stated priority.
