A practical guide to DJMAX RESPECT V on PC: picking a button mode, setting up your keys and speed, understanding scoring and judgment, choosing which DLC to buy first, and climbing Ladder Match and DJ CLASS.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Dungeon & Fighter PACK update (September 17, 2026) and the PLI : 64514 Part.2 update (September 3, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Start on 4B. Four lanes (plus side tracks) is the standard entry point. Move to 5B, then 6B, then 8B as your reading improves. Each button mode has its own difficulty ratings and records.
  • Play NORMAL charts first, then HARD. Every song has several chart difficulties (NORMAL, HARD, MAXIMUM, and on many songs an extra-hard SC chart). A level 5 NORMAL and a level 5 HARD can feel very different; follow the number, not the label.
  • Raise your scroll speed. Most new players leave speed too low and the screen feels cramped. Try a higher speed until notes are easy to separate, then fine-tune. You can change it mid-song.
  • Calibrate before you judge yourself. Use the in-game judgment/sync calibration in Settings before chasing accuracy. Wireless keyboards and high-latency audio setups will wreck timing.
  • Freestyle is where you practice; Ladder Match is where you get ranked. Missions and Collection unlock content along the way.
  • Buy DLC deliberately. There are 50+ DLC packs on Steam. Start with whatever music you actually like; see the buying section below.
  • Family Sharing covers the base game only. DLC is not shared, per the Steam store page.
  • Steam's store text still describes full controller support as "Coming Soon". Keyboard is the standard PC setup; check the in-game Settings for pad options before buying a controller for it.

Modes at a Glance

Mode | What it is | Best for

FREESTYLE | Pick any unlocked song, button mode, and chart | Practice, score chasing, DJ CLASS

ONLINE: Ladder Match | Ranked 1v1 with tiers from Bronze up to Grandmaster | Competitive ranking

ONLINE: Open Match | Rooms with up to several players racing for top score | Casual play with friends

MISSION | Preset song sets with special conditions or score targets | Unlocks and a structured challenge

AIR | A continuous random playlist you can play along to or just watch, with player comments | Background listening, discovering songs

COLLECTION | Profile, stats, achievements, unlocked art and videos | Tracking progress

Ladder Match and Open Match are the online modes. Ladder is the one with LP (league points), tiers, and a Grandmaster list; Open Match is lower pressure.

Button Modes and Default Layouts

The game supports four button modes. The layouts below are example home-row setups, not the official defaults - check the key settings in Settings to see your current binds and remap to whatever is comfortable.

Mode | Lanes | Example home-row layout | Notes

4B | 4 + side tracks | D F J K | Best starting point; most forgiving hand motion

5B | 5 + side tracks | D F Space J K | Center lane on a thumb

6B | 6 + side tracks | S D F J K L | Big jump in reading difficulty

8B | 8 lanes | A S D F J K L ; or similar | Hardest to read; many players move here last

Side tracks are the wide notes on the left and right that you hit with separate side keys (many players use the Shift keys or another pinky/thumb key; check your binding). Bind them somewhere you can press while holding lane notes.

Tips for key setup:

  • Keep your index fingers on the "home" keys you already type with (F and J).
  • On keyboard, avoid binds that trigger ghosting on cheap keyboards. If some three-key chords drop inputs, test in Notepad or a key-rollover tester.
  • Mechanical keyboards with low actuation help, but consistency matters more than switch type.

Scoring, Judgment, and Fever

Judgment: each note is graded on timing from MAX 100% down through lower MAX percentages to BREAK (a miss). Your Rate (accuracy percentage) is the average of those timing grades, and it is what most players compare.

Combo: consecutive non-BREAK hits. A full combo means zero BREAKs. A "perfect play" means every note at MAX 100%.

Fever: building combo fills a Fever gauge that multiplies your score. You can leave Fever on automatic or trigger it yourself; for pure accuracy practice, automatic is simplest.

What actually matters:

  • BREAKs reset your combo and drag down Rate. Some missions add their own conditions, so read a mission's requirements before starting it.
  • For score and ranking systems, Rate is king. Hitting everything slightly late still costs Rate, which is why calibration matters.

Speed and Visual Settings

  • Scroll speed is the single most important setting. Higher speed spreads notes out and makes dense patterns readable. Lower speed gives more reaction time but crowds the screen. Most intermediate players play faster than they think they should.
  • Change speed on the fly during a song using the speed keys (check your binds in Settings) so you can adjust for slow or fast BPM songs.
  • Gear and note skins: pick a note skin with high contrast between lanes. Many players prefer skins where the center lane or side tracks are clearly distinct.
  • Background dim / BGA: music videos look great but can hide notes. Lower background brightness if you lose notes in busy videos.
  • Frame rate: the September 17, 2026 update improved how key inputs are judged when the frame rate is low, but you will still read notes best at a stable, high frame rate. Turn off V-Sync if it adds noticeable input lag on your display.

Progression and Unlocks

  • Missions unlock songs, gear, and cosmetics as you clear them. They are also a good way to practice specific patterns because many missions add restrictions or effects.
  • Levels and achievements: your player level rises as you play. The Steam version lists 288 achievements.
  • The UNLOCK SONG PACK DLC exists for players who would rather unlock base-game content immediately than grind for it. It is optional; everything it unlocks can be earned by playing.
  • Rocky Point (RP) is an in-game currency used in the DJMAX SHOP. PLI packs (see below) are sold for RP rather than as Steam DLC.

DJ CLASS Explained

DJ CLASS is the long-term skill rating in the game. It is built from your best results on a set of target tracks, split between long-standing tracks and a rotating NEW group.

What changed in the September 2026 updates:

  • NEW target tracks are all tracks released within the six months before the update. Each content drop therefore refreshes the NEW pool.
  • When a big pack launches, the game grants PLAY POINTs in proportion to your highest DJ CLASS value as of the update, delivered on your first login after it.

Practical implications:

  • Your DJ CLASS benefits from scoring well on recent releases. When a new pack drops, playing its songs can move your rating even if your older bests are maxed.
  • Improving Rate on songs you already clear is often worth more than clearing one harder song badly.
  • Pick your strongest button mode for rating pushes rather than spreading effort across all four.

Ladder Match

Ladder Match is ranked 1v1. You earn or lose LP based on results and climb tiers from Bronze up through Master to Grandmaster, which is a leaderboard-limited tier updated daily.

Key rules to know as of September 2026:

  • Decay applies at Master and above. Players who stop playing at Master or higher lose points over time and can be demoted.
  • A bug after the September 3 update stopped Grandmaster updates and decay from processing. It was fixed on September 21 and the ladder has run normally since September 22. An earlier emergency maintenance on September 14 warned that pending LP decay could be applied in bulk at the next server reset (September 15, 00:00 KST), so a sudden LP drop around then was expected, not a bug.
  • Some Ladder Match records from September 14, 18:45 to 22:30 (UTC+9) were lost and could not be fully restored, per the studio's apology notice.
  • Special tracks such as Permutation (Original Ver.) do not appear in Ladder or Versus matches.

Ladder tips:

  • Warm up in Freestyle before queuing; the first few games of a session are usually your worst.
  • Learn the common high-level songs in your button mode; recognition matters as much as raw skill.
  • Do not queue tilted. A losing streak costs more LP than a break costs time.

DLC Buying Guide

With 58 DLC entries on Steam, it helps to have a plan. The ones below are real store listings; prices vary by region and sales.

Pack type | Examples on Steam | Why buy it

Series legacy packs | TRILOGY PACK, TECHNIKA PACK, Emotional Sense PACK | Classic DJMAX tracks and charts; many community favorites

Soundtrack-style packs | V EXTENSION PACK, RESPECT Original Soundtrack, V Original Soundtrack | Adds more of the core RESPECT/V era songs

Collaboration packs | Deemo Pack, GIRLS' FRONTLINE PACK, MapleStory PACK, TEKKEN PACK, Blue Archive PACK, Dungeon & Fighter PACK | Music from partner games plus themed items

Convenience | UNLOCK SONG PACK | Skip unlock grinding for base content

PLI packs (in-game shop) | PLI : 64514 Part.1, PLI : 64514 Part.2 (129 RP) | Playlist-style music items bought with RP

Buying advice:

  • Buy for the music you like. You will replay favorites hundreds of times; genre fit matters more than track count.
  • Wait for sales. NEOWIZ runs regular discounts (for example, the NEOWIZ Publisher Sale ran September 15 to 22, 2026).
  • Check online requirements. Ladder and Open Match only pull songs both players can access, so owning more packs gives you more song variety in online rooms.
  • PLI bonus tracks: owning PLI : 64514 Part.1 adds "Permutation Part.1" to Part.2 buyers; owning both parts adds "Permutation (Original Ver.)".

Latest content (as of September 2026)

  • Dungeon & Fighter PACK (released September 17, 2026): 15 tracks plus themed items.
  • PLI : 64514 Part.2 (September 3, 2026): 12 tracks from the 2025 DJMAX compilation album, including "Acid Invasion" by SOPHI, "DUKA" by BEXTER, "Seek and destroy" by ND Lee, and "The Final Frontier" by VoidRover. Placed in the PLI category in FREE STYLE and OPEN MATCH.
  • DPC 2026 (DJMAX PATTERN-DESIGN CHALLENGE) opened in September 2026; community chart designers can download the official sequencer and submit patterns.

Practice Routine That Works

  • Warm-up (10 minutes): 3 to 4 songs a few levels below your limit. Focus on Rate, not clears.
  • Target work (20 minutes): pick 2 songs just above your comfort level. Replay the hard sections rather than whole songs if you can, and try a slightly higher speed on each attempt.
  • Pattern variety: alternate between streamy songs, chord-heavy songs, and long-note (hold) songs so you do not build a one-trick skill set.
  • Cool-down: play something you love. Motivation is the main limiter in rhythm games.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Scroll speed too low. If dense patterns look like walls, go faster.
  • Skipping calibration. A consistent early or late bias costs Rate on every single note.
  • Jumping to 6B or 8B too early. Build reading on 4B/5B first; the skills transfer upward.
  • Mashing through hard sections. It builds bad habits. Drop a level and learn the pattern cleanly.
  • Buying every DLC at once. You will not play most of it. Buy a pack or two, play them properly, then expand.
  • Ignoring decay. At Master and above, taking a long break can drop your tier.
  • Letting music videos distract you. Dim the background if needed.

Advanced Tips

  • Use per-song speed changes. Slow-BPM songs often need a higher speed setting to look normal.
  • Anchor your hands. Keep fingers resting on keys between notes; lifting fully adds delay on bursts.
  • Practice side-track independence. Many upper-level charts combine side tracks with lane streams. Drill songs that use side notes heavily.
  • Read ahead, not at the judgment line. Your eyes should sit in the upper part of the lane while your hands handle what is arriving.
  • Check community tools. Players track records and DJ CLASS progress with community sites (for example, V-ARCHIVE); they make it easier to see which songs will move your rating.
  • Watch the official channels. New DLC is usually previewed on the official DJMAX YouTube before release, so you can decide whether to buy.
