A practical guide to Tripwire's realism WWII shooter bundle: Red Orchestra 2 (Eastern Front) and its standalone expansion Rising Storm (Pacific). It covers classes, modes, weapon handling, tanks, the commander's tools, and how to survive long enough to be useful.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final retail builds (Rising Storm, May 2013; Heroes of the West mod winter 2016 update). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: Tripwire hasn't released new content for RO2/RS in years. Its focus moved to Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (2017) and other games. The bundle is still sold on Steam (it was 85% off in the July 2025 Summer Sale), and it's playable on community-run servers. Population is small, so check the server browser at peak EU/NA hours and look up community Discords for scheduled nights.
What's in the Box
Part | Theater | Factions | Highlights
Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad (2011) | Battle of Stalingrad, July 1942 to February 1943 | Germany vs Soviet Union | Urban infantry maps, first-person tank combat. The separate single-player campaign install was removed in a later update (see below)
Rising Storm (30 May 2013) | Pacific War | USMC and US Army vs Imperial Japanese Army and Special Naval Landing Forces | Asymmetric balance, banzai charges, knee mortars, flamethrowers. Maps include Peleliu, Saipan and Iwo Jima
Heroes of the West (free mod, Steam app 440090) | Western Front 1944–45 | US vs Germany | Community project. The 2016 winter update added Foy, Elsenborn Ridge, Saint-Come-du-Mont and a Jeep with an M2 .50 cal
A WWI community mod, Aufmarsch: The Great War (Eastern and Western Fronts), also exists for RO2.
Single-player note: Owners of the bundle used to get a separate single-player campaign install for both games. Tripwire removed it in a later update, so only people who owned it at the time can still install it. If you're buying today, treat this as a multiplayer game.
Quick Start
- One or two hits kill. There's no health regeneration and no hit markers. You'll die often at first, and that's normal. Play slowly and use cover.
- Use the first-person cover system. Press against cover to enter it, then peek or blind-fire over and around it. Leaning and cover are how you survive.
- Bandage bleeding immediately. Wounds bleed. Break line of sight and bandage before you pass out.
- Aim down the sights and breathe. Holding your breath steadies your aim for a few seconds. Resting or bracing your weapon on objects stabilizes it further.
- Deploy your machine gun. MGs need bipods deployed on a surface to be accurate. Hip-firing an MG wastes ammo.
- Follow the objectives. In Territory, objectives are captured in sequence. Kills alone don't win.
- Spawn on your squad leader. Squad leaders are mobile spawn points. Stick with them and protect them.
- Pick a role, not just a gun. Rifleman, Assault, Machine Gunner, Sniper, Engineer, Anti-Tank, Squad Leader and Commander all do different jobs. Fill what the team lacks.
- Suppression is real. Heavy fire near you blurs your vision and shakes your aim. Suppress enemies before you move, and move when you're not the one being suppressed.
Core Mechanics
Weapon handling
- Ballistics: Bullets drop and take time to travel. Many rifles let you adjust sight zeroing for range, so set it before long shots.
- Free aim: Your weapon can move a little inside the screen before the view turns, so the crosshair-free center of the screen isn't always where you'll hit. Aim with the sights.
- Manual ammo tracking: You don't get an exact ammo counter in most modes. Check your magazine weight and count your shots. Reloading early throws away partial magazines in some modes.
- Bayonets and melee: Bolt-action rifles can mount bayonets, which are deadly in close-quarters corridors.
- Grenades: Frag grenades for rooms. In Rising Storm, Japanese players can also set grenades as booby traps.
Health, bleeding and death
- There are hit locations, and a hit to the head or torso usually kills. Limb hits cause bleeding and slow you.
- Bandaging takes a moment and leaves you vulnerable, so do it behind cover.
Morale and suppression
- Explosions and near misses suppress you: the screen blurs and your aim shakes. Heroes of your own team reduce this for nearby allies.
- Suppressing fire isn't a waste. It pins enemies so teammates can flank.
Classes and progression
Role | Job
Rifleman | Backbone. Bolt-actions or semi-autos, and the most slots per team
Assault / Elite Rifleman | SMGs or automatic rifles for pushing into buildings
Machine Gunner | Deploy on cover and lock down lanes. Suppression is your main output
Marksman / Sniper | Scoped rifles. Pick off officers, MGs and anti-tank players
Engineer | Satchel charges and explosives for clearing defenders and vehicles
Anti-Tank | Anti-tank rifles and weapons against armor (RO2)
Squad Leader | Mobile spawn point, smoke, and marking targets for artillery with binoculars
Commander | Uses radios to call artillery, recon and other support. Coordinates squads
Tank crew | Driver, gunner, commander positions in the tank maps
Leveling each role and weapon raises your honor level and weapon handling, and unlocks attachments like bayonets. Top-scoring players can become Heroes, gaining access to rarer weapons and a visible hero look that boosts nearby allies and unsettles enemies.
Weapons at a glance
Side | Iconic weapons
Germany | Kar98k, G41, MP40, MG34, StG 44 (limited/hero), PzB anti-tank rifle
Soviet Union | Mosin-Nagant M91/30, SVT-40, PPSh-41, DP-28, PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle
United States (RS) | M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Thompson, BAR, M2 flamethrower
Japan (RS) | Arisaka Type 99 and Type 38 rifles, Type 100 SMG, Type 99 LMG, Type 89 knee mortar
Tanks (Red Orchestra 2)
- Tanks have fully modeled interiors and an AI crew for any empty positions. You can switch between seats (driver, gunner, commander, hull MG).
- Armor, angle and ammunition type matter. Hitting the front armor head-on often fails, so aim for the sides, rear, turret ring and weak spots.
- Infantry anti-tank weapons are deadly from the sides. Keep infantry near your tanks.
Game Modes
Mode | How it works | Tip
Territory | Attackers capture objectives in sequence while defenders hold. Matches can last from about 40 minutes to 2 hours across rounds | The core RO experience. Play the objective
Countdown | Single-life variant. Attackers respawn only after capturing a point | Play carefully, since your life matters
Firefight | Team deathmatch with dynamic spawns | Good warm-up, but not how RO is really played
Campaign (multiplayer) | Linked maps where results affect the next battle | Needs a dedicated community
Single-player | German and Soviet campaigns with bots | Only available to players who owned the separate install before Tripwire removed it
Servers also run one of four Play Styles: Realistic is the standard mode with minimal HUD aids, Action is more forgiving, Classic (added after launch) recreates the original Red Orchestra feel, and Custom lets server admins mix settings. Beginners should start on Action servers.
Notable maps
- Red Orchestra 2: Apartments, Barracks, Commissar's House, Fallen Fighters, Grain Elevator, Gumrak, Pavlov's House, Red October Factory, Spartanovka, plus tank and combined-arms maps.
- Rising Storm: Pacific island maps including Peleliu, Saipan and Iwo Jima.
Rising Storm: Playing the Asymmetry
As the US:
- You have firepower: semi-autos, BARs and flamethrowers. Advance under suppressing fire.
- Watch for grenade booby traps in doorways and on paths.
- When you hear a banzai charge, hold your position, fire steadily and don't panic. The charge is designed to suppress you.
As Japan:
- Bolt-actions and knee mortars are your tools. Use range, concealment and indirect fire.
- Banzai charge: When enough players charge together, it suppresses Americans and reduces your own suppression. Coordinate it. A lone banzai is suicide.
- Booby-trap chokepoints, then fall back to prepared positions.
Commander and Squad Leader Duty
- Commander: Call artillery on enemy concentrations and the objective's approaches. Use recon to spot enemies, and communicate by voice. A silent commander loses.
- Squad Leader: Stay alive, because you're a spawn point. Use smoke to cover open crossings, and mark targets with binoculars for the commander's artillery.
- Everyone: Voice chat and squad chat win Territory maps. Call out MG nests and tanks.
Getting It Running Well
- The game is old but can still crash. Verify files through Steam if it does.
- Lower motion blur and post-processing if you have trouble spotting targets.
- Raise FOV if the server allows it, and lower mouse sensitivity for precise sight work.
- Install the Heroes of the West mod from its free Steam page if you want Western Front content.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running in the open. Move from cover to cover, and use smoke.
- Ignoring bleeding. A limb hit becomes death a minute later if you don't bandage.
- Hip-firing MGs instead of deploying.
- Wasting magazines by reloading constantly when magazines are tracked.
- Chasing kills in Territory instead of capturing and defending.
- Leaving tanks unsupported in infantry-heavy maps.
- Solo banzai charges as Japan.
Advanced Tips
- Peek from different spots. Don't re-peek the same window. The enemy is already aiming at it.
- Zero your rifle for common engagement ranges on each map.
- Hold your breath only when the shot is lined up, since the steadiness is short-lived.
- Counter-snipe from depth. Stay back from windows so your muzzle doesn't stick out.
- Coordinate artillery with pushes. Shelling the objective just before your team moves in clears defenders and suppresses the rest.
- Tank crews: Angle your hull against threats and use the commander's hatch sparingly to spot.
FAQ
Are Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm separate games? On Steam they're bundled as one product (app 35450). Rising Storm is a standalone expansion that includes RO2's multiplayer content.
Is anyone still playing? Yes, on community servers, but population is small. Weekend evenings in Europe and North America are best. The single-player campaign is only available if you owned the separate install before it was removed, so new buyers depend on servers.
Is Heroes of the West free? Yes, it's a free mod for owners, installed from its own Steam page.
RO2 or Rising Storm 2: Vietnam? RS2: Vietnam is newer and busier. RO2/RS is the pick if you specifically want WWII Eastern Front or Pacific realism and first-person tank interiors.
Why do I die so fast? That's the design. Slow down, use cover, bandage wounds and stick with your squad.
What's the difference between Realistic, Action and Classic servers? Realistic is the standard mode and strips most HUD aids. Action is more forgiving and friendlier for new players. Classic is based on the original Red Orchestra's mechanics. Custom servers mix settings, so check the server description.
