A practical guide to NFS Unbound's single-player campaign to The Grand, car classes and tuning, Heat and cops, money, and the online side of Lakeshore (Speed Pass, PvP playlists, Hot Pursuit and Lockdown).
Researched September 2026 — current as of Vol. 9: Lockdown (released November 26, 2024; patch 9.0.2 in December 2024), the newest volume listed on the Steam store. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status in 2026
Unbound launched on December 1, 2022 and has been updated through "Volumes." The latest one listed on Steam is Vol. 9: Lockdown (November 2024), which added the PvPvE Lockdown mode and the series' first motorbike. There have been no new official Steam announcements since the December 2024 Vol. 8 catch-up pack, and Wikipedia describes the volume updates as having concluded with Vol. 9. Treat the game as late-life: online still works, but don't expect a new volume on a regular schedule. The Ultimate Collection bundles all post-launch premium content, including the Vol. 9 Premium Speed Pass.
Quick Start
- The campaign and online are separate. Single-player progress (cars, cash) doesn't carry into Lakeshore Online, and vice versa.
- Your first car choice matters little. The starter cars are all B-class-ish; you'll replace or upgrade them fast.
- Bank your cash. In the campaign, money earned during a Day or Night session is only safe once you drive back to a safehouse. Getting busted loses the session's winnings.
- Buy-ins are bets. Many races have a buy-in; win them to profit. Pick races your car can win.
- Heat carries across a session. Each race and police chase raises Heat; high Heat means aggressive, fast cops.
- Qualifiers each week require a certain car class. Plan your upgrades toward that class ahead of time.
- Burst Nitrous refills from drifting, drafting, near misses and jumps. Use it right after a drift to exit corners fast.
- Tune the Grip/Drift slider. Many players prefer grip for races and drift for drift events; a car that drifts too easily loses time.
- Driving effects (the cartoon smoke/wing visuals) are optional and can be turned off in the options if they distract you.
- There's no rewind. A bust ends the session and costs unbanked cash, so do high-risk events early in a session, not after a long unbanked streak.
Campaign Structure: Road to The Grand
You play a young street racer in Lakeshore City, trying to reach The Grand, the city's biggest street racing event. Your mentor is Rydell, and your former friend Yaz becomes a central rival.
- The campaign runs for four weeks, each split into days, and each day into a Day and Night session.
- Day races pay less but police are less intense; Night races pay more with higher Heat.
- At the end of each week is a Qualifier: a race series with a buy-in and a class restriction. Placing high enough moves you toward The Grand.
- Meetups at night unlock multi-race events and bigger rewards.
- Safehouses end the session and bank your cash. You unlock more safehouses as you progress.
Earning cash efficiently
- Pick races with the highest reward-to-buy-in ratio your car can realistically win.
- Chain several races per session, but return to a safehouse before Heat gets out of hand.
- Side activities (drift zones, speedtraps, jumps and collectibles around the map) give cash or rewards.
- In the early weeks prioritize performance parts over visual customizations.
Car Classes and Performance
Every car has a performance rating that places it in a class:
Class | Where you'll use it
B | Early races and the first qualifier
A | Week 2 events
A+ | Mid-campaign
S | Late campaign
S+ | Top-end; The Grand and endgame online events
Upgrade path tips:
- Engine upgrades and forced induction jump performance fastest. Engine swaps can transform a car's class ceiling.
- Tires change handling a lot: drift tires for drift events, grip/performance tires for circuits and sprints.
- Avoid pushing a car just past a class threshold if the qualifier needs the lower class. You can downgrade parts later, but it wastes money.
- Keep at least one car per class you'll need for upcoming events.
Tuning basics
- Grip vs. Drift slider: grip gives tighter lines and faster circuits; drift makes long slides easier and fills Burst Nitrous faster.
- Steering sensitivity, downforce and brakes can be adjusted to taste. Heavier downforce helps high-speed stability.
- Nitrous type: regular nitrous is sustained; Burst Nitrous is short, repeatable bursts earned from skillful driving. Pick based on how you drive.
Heat and Police
- Heat rises with races, collisions with cops and escapes. It persists through the current session.
- Higher Heat brings more aggressive police units, roadblocks and helicopters.
- To escape: break line of sight, use alleys and off-road shortcuts, then stay hidden until the cooldown completes.
- If you're busted, you lose that session's unbanked cash. At high Heat, head home before starting risky events.
- Chases at high Heat are the riskiest part of the game; decide in advance how much unbanked cash you're willing to gamble.
Racing Technique
- Brake before corners, not in them. Brake-to-drift (tap brake then steer) initiates drifts cleanly.
- Drafting behind opponents builds boost and speed on straights.
- Near misses with traffic build boost; don't chase them into a crash.
- Burst Nitrous out of turns. Tap it as your drift ends to rocket onto the straight.
- Shortcuts: learn the ones used in qualifier routes. Watch the minimap for alternate paths.
- Rubber-band awareness: AI opponents keep pace; a clean final sector matters more than a big early lead.
Lakeshore Online
Online is its own progression with its own garage, cash and a Speed Pass (free and premium tracks each volume). Key modes by volume:
Volume | Headline addition
Vol. 6: Head to Head | Dedicated PvP mode with weekly playlists; three customizable Audi cars
Vol. 7: Drift & Drag | Drift and Drag modes return with League progression; Ford Mustang Dark Horse '24 and BMW M3 Competition Touring '23
Vol. 8: Cops vs. Racers | Hot Pursuit (4v4 cops vs. racers), Pursuit Tech, Cop Progression; Porsche 959 S '87 and Lotus Evija '23
Vol. 9: Lockdown | PvPvE extraction mode: 5 squads of up to 3 players, Lockups with Hot Rides, Extraction Truck, BMW S 1000 RR motorbike; Subaru Impreza WRX STI '99 and Honda Integra Type R '98
Hot Pursuit (Vol. 8)
- 4 cops vs. 4 racers. Cops take down racers; racers try to finish.
- Pursuit Tech (unlocked through Cop Progression) gives cops and racers gadgets. Learn what each counters.
- Cops: work together to box in the leader. Racers: spread out so cops can't focus one target.
Lockdown (Vol. 9)
- Break into Lockups to claim Hot Rides (including Racer X's BMW M3 GTR and rides inspired by Most Wanted's Blacklist). Escape the shrinking Lockdown Zone with them to unlock them across Free Roam, PvP and Lockdown.
- Claim the Extraction Truck before rival squads to extract safely. If it leaves without you, its EMP blast can wreck you.
- Contracts give objectives during a round; patch 9.0.2 improved how contract progress is shown.
- The BMW S 1000 RR motorbike is only drivable in Lockdown and some special PvP bike playlists.
Solo play online
Since patch 7.1.0 (June 2024), free-roam playlists can start with just one player, so you can complete playlist challenges without waiting for a full lobby.
Speed Pass and catch-up packs
- Each volume's Speed Pass has free tiers (Vol. 9: 45 free tiers including the Subaru Impreza WRX STI) and premium tiers.
- Dynamic Catch-Up Packs (paid) instantly unlock missed tiers from older volumes, including the Lotus Evija (Vol. 8) and BMW M3 Competition Touring (Vol. 7).
- The Vol. 9 Premium Speed Pass needed to be claimed during Vol. 9; the store note warns that content is forfeited if you don't log in and claim during the volume.
Customization
- Unbound's visual customization is deep: body kits, wraps, rims, livery editor, and character outfits.
- Driving and takedown effects (visual tags when you boost or jump) can be customized or disabled.
- Save performance money first; visual customization is cosmetic only.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not banking cash before Heat spikes at night.
- Overbuying cars early instead of upgrading one car into the qualifier's class.
- Crossing a class limit by accident before a qualifier that needs a lower class.
- Using drift tuning for every race. Drift builds feel great but lose time on grip-heavy circuits.
- Ignoring Burst Nitrous. It's the main speed source for skilled drivers.
- Playing online expecting single-player progress. They're separate.
Advanced Tips
- Tire choice per event: swap tires between drift events and circuits in the garage; it's cheap and effective.
- Burst chaining: long drifts plus near misses can chain multiple bursts per corner sequence.
- Map knowledge wins races. Use free roam to learn shortcuts in the qualifier areas.
- Cop evasion route: memorize a few hiding spots near each safehouse for quick escapes.
- Online meta cars shift with each volume; Criterion described the Lotus Evija as a "meta-car candidate" in Vol. 8. Check community tier lists before investing heavily.
- Lockdown squads: communicate who carries the Hot Ride and who blocks. Extraction timing matters more than kills.
