A practical guide to FFXII The Zodiac Age on PC: picking two jobs per character, writing gambits that win fights for you, license boards, Espers, hunts and endgame, Trial Mode, missables, and PC settings fixes.
Researched September 2026 — current as of PC patch 1.0.4.0 (April 2020, added job reset and three gambit sets). Check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Jobs are permanent choices, unless you use the job reset. Patch 1.0.4.0 added a job reset function, so experimenting is less scary than on the original PS4 release.
- Each character gets two jobs. You pick the first early on and unlock the second after defeating the first Esper, Belias.
- Gambits do most of the fighting. Set healing and revive gambits on everyone as soon as you can.
- Use speed mode. You can speed the game up to 2x or 4x (switchable at any time) for travel and grinding. Turn it off for boss fights.
- Buy new magicks and technicks as you find shops. Buying a spell doesn't make it usable; you still need its license.
- Sell loot. Loot sales unlock Bazaar goods, some of which are the best gear in their tier.
- Take hunts early. The Clan Centurio hunt board (run by Montblanc) gives gil, items, and Clan Points.
- Build chains. Killing the same enemy type repeatedly builds a chain and improves drops.
- Save often at save crystals. Crystals also restore HP and MP.
- Some areas are one-time only. Explore thoroughly when a story area feels "special."
The Zodiac Job System
Each character picks two of twelve jobs, each with its own license board. A character can't take the same job twice, but several characters can share a job.
Job | Main weapon type | Role
White Mage | Rods | Healing, White Magick
Black Mage | Staves | Offensive Black Magick
Time Battlemage | Crossbows | Time Magick (Haste, Slow, and more), heavy armor
Red Battlemage | Maces | Mixed white and black magick, support; can use shields
Knight | Swords | Heavy armor and shields; frontline tank
Monk | Poles | Frontline damage, self-sustaining technicks
Machinist | Guns | Ranged damage that ignores defense
Uhlan | Spears | Heavy armor, frontline damage
Foebreaker | Axes and hammers | Breaking enemy stats (defense, magick resistance)
Archer | Bows | Ranged physical damage
Shikari | Daggers | Fast light-armor fighter, stealing
Bushi | Katanas | High-damage melee
Some jobs also get secondary weapon types on their boards; the table lists each job's signature weapon. Check the board itself before buying gear.
Popular pairings
These are commonly recommended combinations, not the only good ones. Treat them as safe starting points:
Pairing | Why it works
Knight + White Mage | Durable healer-tank; great for a beginner's Basch or Ashe
Machinist + Time Battlemage | Guns plus Haste and Time Magick support
Uhlan + Shikari | Two strong weapon trees with complementary armor
Black Mage + Monk | Offensive caster with a sturdier body and utility technicks
Foebreaker + Machinist | Debuffs to soften bosses, plus reliable ranged damage
Archer + Uhlan | Ranged damage with heavy armor
Red Battlemage + Monk | Flexible support with self-sufficiency
Bushi + Uhlan | Pure frontline damage
Party balance rule of thumb: make sure at least two characters can cast healing magick and at least one can use Time Magick for Haste. Everything else is flexible.
Who should take which job?
Characters don't have stat bonuses tied to jobs in a way that locks you in, so pick what you like. Many players give casters to Penelo, Fran, and Ashe and frontline roles to Basch, Vaan, and Balthier, but any split works.
License Boards and LP
- Every kill gives License Points (LP). Spend them to unlock nodes on your job boards.
- Licenses let you equip gear and use magicks and technicks, plus passive boosts (HP, magick power, battle lores, and more).
- You still have to buy magicks and technicks at shops.
- Espers and Quickenings are also licensed on the boards.
Tips:
- Beeline toward licenses for gear you can already buy.
- Take HP and damage passives early; they add up fast.
- A handful of key Time Magick and healing licenses changes the difficulty curve more than anything.
Gambits: Let the AI Fight for You
Gambits are "if this, then that" rules. The game checks them from top to bottom and does the first one that applies.
A starter set
Healer:
- Ally: status = KO → Raise (or Phoenix Down)
- Ally: HP below 50% → Cura (or Cure)
- Ally: any status ailment → matching cure (Esuna, Remedy, etc.)
- Foe: party leader's target → Attack
Fighter:
- Ally: status = KO → Phoenix Down
- Self: HP below 30% → Potion (or Hi-Potion)
- Foe: party leader's target → Attack
Time Battlemage support:
- Ally: any without Haste → Haste
- Ally: HP below 50% → Cura
- Foe: party leader's target → Attack
Gambit tips
- Order matters. Put reviving and emergency heals at the top.
- Use "party leader's target" to make everyone focus the same enemy.
- Patch 1.0.4.0 added three gambit sets per character, so you can keep separate setups for normal fights, bosses, and farming.
- Buy new gambits at shops as you progress; stronger conditions and targets appear later.
Espers and Quickenings
Espers are summons. In The Zodiac Age, each Esper can be licensed by only one character, so think about who gets which.
The thirteen Espers: Belias, Mateus, Adrammelech, Zalera, Cúchulainn, Shemhazai, Hashmal, Famfrit, Zeromus, Exodus, Chaos, Ultima, and Zodiark. Some come from the story; the rest are optional superbosses. Obtaining every Esper earns "High Summoner."
Quickenings are powerful special attacks licensed on the boards. Chaining them together into Concurrences deals huge damage. Performing every Concurrence is the "Mist Walker" achievement.
Hunts and Clan Centurio
- Pick up hunt bills from notice boards, talk to the petitioner, and kill the mark.
- Report back to the petitioner and to Montblanc at Clan Centurio for extra rewards.
- Your first mark gives "Galbana Bloom."
- Clan Points come from hunts and defeating enemies; they unlock Clan rank rewards.
- Rare Game are special enemies that appear under certain conditions (like the Trickster, which gives "Sharpshooter").
Notable endgame marks and bosses (from the achievement list): Deathgaze, Gilgamesh, Fafnir, the Behemoth King, the Hell Wyrm, Carrot, Ultima, Zodiark, and Yiazmat (the final and longest hunt).
Trial Mode
- A separate mode of 100 stages of back-to-back battles.
- Completing stage 50 gives "Judge Magister"; stage 100 gives "Imperator."
- Stages award items and gil.
- Bring a strong, well-geared party. Later stages are tougher than most of the main game.
New Game Plus and New Game Minus
- New Game Plus carries over your progress for a replay.
- New Game Minus means characters don't gain experience, which is a popular challenge for low-level runs.
- The PC version's feature list also includes maximized License Points and gil options for players who want to skip the grind.
Missables and One-Time Areas
- Some story areas can't be revisited. Explore them fully and loot everything the first time.
- Cartographer ("Fully explored every map") and Scrivener ("Completed the Bestiary") are the hardest achievements to finish; explore every map area as you go instead of relying on cleanup at the end.
- The Zodiac Spear, one of the best weapons, is a rare treasure in the Necrohol of Nabudis, an optional late-game dungeon. Treasure rules and spawn conditions changed between the original PS2 release and later versions, so follow a Zodiac Age-specific treasure map rather than an old PS2 guide before you loot the area.
- Chains and steals are also achievements: "The Unrelenting" (a 50-chain) and "Master Thief" (50 successful steals) come naturally if you chain-farm with a Shikari, but plan for them rather than leaving them to the end.
PC Settings and Fixes
- FreeSync or G-SYNC monitors can make the game run too fast. Square Enix's official fix: cap your monitor refresh rate to 60Hz for the game, or set the game's program profile in the NVIDIA control panel to use a fixed refresh rate.
- The game supports 60 FPS, 21:9 ultrawide, and 7.1 surround.
- On PC, the post-game modes (Trial Mode, New Game Plus, New Game Minus) are available immediately, without clearing the story first.
- Choose between the original music, the new re-orchestrated soundtrack, and the original soundtrack in options.
Achievement Roadmap
The 41 Steam achievements split into story milestones, grind counters, and endgame fights. Knowing the counters up front saves a cleanup grind later.
Type | Achievements | How to plan
Story | For the Homeland, A Traitor Redeemed (escape the Nalbina Dungeons), Fated Meeting, The Mist Seethes (Dawn Shard), Visions of the Dreamer (leave Mt Bur-Omisace), Reins of History (face Doctor Cid), Wings of My Own (finish the game) | Unmissable; they come with the plot
Counters | Assault Striker (Attack 300 times), Spellslinger (200 Magicks), Premier Prestidigitator (100 Technicks), Blood Dancer (500 foes), Wayfarer (50,000 steps), Master Thief (50 steals), Privateer (sell 1,000 loot), Plunderer (100,000 gil), Spendthrift (spend 1,000,000 gil), Conqueror (48,000 LP), Record Breaker (500,000 Clan Points), Exemplar (party average level above 50) | Mostly passive; add a Steal gambit on one character early so steals tick up
Completion | Runeweaver (every Magick), Jack-of-All-Trades (every Technick), Mist Walker (every Concurrence), High Summoner (every Esper), Cartographer (every map), Scrivener (Bestiary), Collector (Morbid Urn) | Buy spells and technicks as shops stock them; explore maps fully on the first visit
Hunts and superbosses | Galbana Bloom, Sharpshooter (Trickster), Freshmaker (Carrot), Eagle Eye (Deathgaze), Master Swordsman (Gilgamesh), Wyrmslayer (Fafnir), Lord of the Kings (Behemoth King), Radiant Savior (Hell Wyrm), Fell Angel (Ultima), Zodiac Knight (Zodiark), Hunter Extraordinaire (Yiazmat) | Save these for a well-geared, well-gambited party
Trial Mode | Judge Magister (stage 50), Imperator (stage 100) | Do after the main game or with an NG+ party
"Champion of Ivalice" unlocks when you have everything else.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not setting revive gambits. One KO snowballs into a wipe.
- Picking two caster jobs on one character and two melee jobs on everyone else without Haste or healing coverage.
- Leaving speed mode on in boss fights. It speeds up enemies too.
- Forgetting to buy spells after licensing them.
- Selling all loot without checking Bazaar packages. Some packages need specific loot.
- Ignoring hunts. They're the best source of early gil and some of the best rewards.
Advanced Tips
- Chain farming: chain the same enemy type for better drops and rare loot. Keep the chain going as long as you can.
- Foebreaker debuffs make superbosses much more manageable.
- Machinist guns ignore defense, making them excellent against high-defense marks.
- Use gambit sets for boss-specific setups (e.g., status-cure focus).
- Save before optional Espers. Several have unique mechanics that punish unprepared parties.
- Yiazmat is a marathon. Bring a patient setup with strong healing gambits.
