A practical guide to Ubisoft's Himalayan open world: early priorities, crafting and skills, outposts, bell towers and fortresses, the Golden Path choices, Shangri-La, co-op, DLC, and the famous secret ending.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release with Steam Achievements (added January 13, 2025; they sync from Ubisoft Connect). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Launch note: the Steam version runs through Ubisoft Connect, so you need a Ubisoft account. Achievements you already earned on Ubisoft Connect sync to Steam automatically when you launch the game.

Quick Start

  • Want the secret ending? Wait at dinner. In the opening scene, when Pagan Min tells you to wait at the table and leaves, simply don't move. After roughly 15 minutes he returns, and the game plays a short alternate ending. It's worth seeing, but you can also play the full game normally afterward.
  • Craft the Loot Rucksack and Wallet early. Hunting skins upgrade your inventory; bigger bags and wallets are the first real upgrades.
  • Climb Bell Towers. They reveal the map, points of interest and new fast-travel/shop locations.
  • Liberate outposts undetected. You get bonus XP and it's much safer. Scout with the camera, tag enemies, and cut alarms first.
  • Use the Grappling Hook and Wingsuit to move fast across Kyrat's vertical terrain.
  • Buzzer (gyrocopter) is the best early map traversal tool.
  • Karma unlocks Guns for Hire (AI rebels you can call in) and shop discounts.
  • Save fortresses for later or kill their governor first; they're much harder while the governor is alive.
  • Syringes keep you alive. Craft healing syringes constantly from green leaves.
  • Elephants are tanks. Ride one into an outpost for a fun (and loud) approach.

Setting and Story Setup

Ajay Ghale returns to Kyrat to scatter his mother's ashes and is dragged into a civil war between Pagan Min's Royal Army and the Golden Path rebels, a movement founded by Ajay's father. Pagan's three regional governors are your main targets:

Governor | Role

Paul De Pleur | Oversees opium production and runs Pagan's torture chambers

Noore Najjar | Runs the arena plus poaching and prostitution rings; Pagan holds her family hostage

Yuma Lau | Pagan's adopted sister, obsessed with Shangri-La

Golden Path choices

The rebels are split between Sabal (tradition) and Amita (progress, heavy reliance on drug money). At key story missions you pick whose plan to follow. Your choices determine who leads the Golden Path at the end and change which missions you get. There's no "right" answer; both paths have dark consequences.

Core Systems

Hunting and crafting

Animal skins craft inventory upgrades. The main crafted items:

Upgrade | Effect

Loot Rucksack | Carry more loot to sell

Wallet | Carry more money

Ammo Pouch | Carry more ammo

Throwables Pouch | Carry more grenades/throwables

Syringe Kit | Carry more syringes

Weapon Holster | More weapon slots

Some top-tier upgrades need rare animal skins from Hunting missions.

Syringes

Crafted from plants. Healing syringes use green leaves. Other syringes give buffs like hunting (spot animals, reduced detection by animals), survival (damage resistance), and focus (slow-motion aiming). Keep a stack of healing syringes at all times.

Skills

Skill points come from XP. Skills are split into two trees:

Tree | Focus

Tiger | Offense: takedowns, weapons handling, combat skills

Elephant | Defense and survival: health, syringe effects, crafting

High-priority skills: extra health, takedown upgrades (chain takedowns, drop takedowns), and faster reloads. Some skills require story progress before you can buy them.

Karma

Karma rises when you help rebels (random events, saving hostages, protecting villages). Higher karma unlocks Guns for Hire (AI allies you can call) and discounts at shops.

Vehicles and traversal

  • Buzzer (small gyrocopter) for scouting and fast travel between regions
  • Wingsuit and parachute for descents
  • Grappling hook at marked anchor points
  • Elephants as rideable tanks
  • Cars, trucks, boats, and armored vehicles

Outposts, Bell Towers and Fortresses

Bell Towers

Climb and cut the Royal Army broadcast to reveal the surrounding map. Towers are guarded; some need a mini-puzzle to climb.

Outposts

  • Scout with the camera from high ground and tag every enemy.
  • Take out alarms first (or cut them).
  • Kill hunters and heavies before they get close.
  • Use bait to lure predators into the outpost for chaos.
  • Stealth kills are silent; takedowns chain with skills.

Undetected liberations earn bonus XP. Liberated outposts become fast-travel points and reduce enemy patrols in the region.

Fortresses

Four heavily defended fortresses exist. They're much harder while their governor is alive; after the governor is killed in the story, the fortress is easier to take. Fortresses give big rewards and are ideal for co-op.

Shangri-La

Special missions where you play as the warrior Kalinag in a mystical realm with a tiger companion. Collect Thangka paintings to unlock these missions. Shangri-La is combat-focused and very different from the main game: bow, tiger, and demons. The rewards include special weapons.

Weapons

Weapons unlock over time through story progress and liberating towers. Upgrades include attachments (scopes, suppressors, extended mags) and paint jobs.

  • Suppressed rifles and bows for stealth players
  • Assault rifles and LMGs for loud outposts
  • Signature weapons (unique variants such as the Buzzsaw) come from specific missions and activities
  • Grenade launchers and rocket launchers for vehicles and elephants

Co-op and Multiplayer

  • Drop-in co-op: a friend can drop in to explore Kyrat with you (story missions are solo). Great for outposts and fortresses.
  • Battles of Kyrat: asymmetrical PvP, Golden Path vs Rakshasa, with three modes: Outpost, Propaganda and Demon Mask. It's a 2014 mode, so expect long queues or empty lobbies today.
  • Map Editor: the Far Cry 4 map editor lets you build and share maps.

DLC

DLC | Content

Escape from Durgesh Prison | Survival escape mission, solo or co-op

Valley of the Yetis | New region with story, base defense and Yetis

Hurk Deluxe Pack | Story missions and extra weapons (Hurk's Redemption)

Overrun | Competitive multiplayer maps and mode

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not upgrading the wallet and rucksack. You'll leave money and loot behind constantly.
  • Attacking fortresses too early. Wait for the governor to die.
  • Going loud at outposts without killing alarms. Reinforcements pile in.
  • Ignoring syringes. Healing and buff syringes are essential on higher difficulty.
  • Skipping bell towers. You lose map intel and shop access.
  • Forgetting the Buzzer. It's the fastest way to scout and travel.

Advanced Tips

  • Bait and animals: throw bait near enemies to have predators attack them.
  • Elephant approach: ride an elephant into an outpost; it tanks damage and smashes vehicles.
  • Drop takedowns from the wingsuit or grappling hook.
  • Use Guns for Hire to distract enemies while you flank.
  • Focus syringe helps with tough long-range shots.
  • Harvest rare animals with the right weapon (bow or shotgun depending on the animal) to keep the pelt intact.

Achievements and Completion Tips

Steam Achievements arrived on January 13, 2025 and sync from Ubisoft Connect. The list has 57 achievements; most are "Campaign only," five belong to the Valley of the Yetis DLC, and two need online modes.

Achievement plan

Work through them in this order so nothing is left for a painful cleanup at the end:

Stage | Achievements to target | How

Opening hours | Welcome to Kyrat, Tricked Out, Quick Learner, Shutterbug, Well Read | Join the Golden Path, craft 5 upgrades, learn 10 skills, tag 25 enemies with the camera, read 10 notes

Outpost sweep | Tread Lightly, Deliver Us From Evil, All Clear, Defender | Liberate an outpost with no alarm, then 12, then all of them. Repel 3 Outpost Retaliation Parties when they trigger

Towers and travel | End Transmission, Like A Bird, The Sky Is Falling | Liberate 8 Bell Towers, fly 5,000 m total in the wingsuit, and do a takedown from a Buzzer

Story beats | One Down, Two Down, Hat-Trick, The King Is Dead, Overdose | Decide the fate of De Pleur, Noore, Yuma and Pagan Min, and discover Shangri-La

Side content | Trigger-Man, No One Left Behind, Hand Of Justice, Robin Hood, Defuser, Gearhead, The Rarest Game, Well-Rounded | 3 Assassination or Eye for an Eye quests, 15 hostages rescued, 3 Pagan's Wrath convoys, 3 Royal Cargo Trucks returned to a liberated outpost, 3 Bomb Defusal quests, 3 Kyrati Films racing/survival activities, 3 Kyrat Fashion Week quests, any 6 Hunting quests

Karma and economy | The Good Fight, Make It Rain, Fixer-Upper, Custom-Fitted, Fully Loaded | Reach Karma Level 2 and buy a Guns for Hire upgrade, spend 500,000 rupees at Trading Posts, buy 3 Ghale Homestead items, buy every attachment and paint for one weapon, learn all skills

Collectibles | Rewriting History, Right Tributes, Exorcist, Caretaker Of Memory | Remove 30 Propaganda Posters, spin 10 Mani Wheels, destroy 15 Masks of Yalung, find 10 Lost Letters

Arena | The People's Champ | Reach Arena Rank 5

Combat feats | Quad Kill, Two Birds, Drive-By, From A Distance, Roadkill, Misdirection, Flame On!, Reign Of Death, Tusker, Display Of Fortitude, Changing Lanes | See tips below

Co-op and online | Brother In Arms, Community Surprise, Renaissance Man | Liberate an outpost as Hurk in co-op, play a Top Rated map from the Map Browser, finish a public match of every Battles of Kyrat type

Valley of the Yetis | Home Sweet Home, Night Survivor, Builder, Master Builder, Spiritual Hunter, Master of the Awakened, Awakened! | Occupy and defend the Relay Station, complete its upgrade quests, kill 5 Yetis (single player) and finish the DLC campaign

Tips for the awkward ones

  • Rarest overall: Renaissance Man (0.4%) and Changing Lanes (0.5%). Renaissance Man needs public Battles of Kyrat matches, so hunt for lobbies with friends or community groups. Changing Lanes is a vehicle takedown from the passenger seat; easiest with a co-op partner driving alongside an enemy vehicle.
  • Two Birds: line up two enemies at an outpost from a hillside and wait for them to overlap.
  • From A Distance: an arrow or bolt kill from 60 m or more. Tag a stationary guard, aim above the head to compensate for drop.
  • Quad Kill: throw C4 or a grenade at a group gathered around an alarm or during a convoy stop.
  • Misdirection: distract 15 enemies with rocks; fold it into your stealth outpost runs.
  • Tusker: 30 kills with an elephant. Ride one into an outpost that sits near a herd.
  • Roadkill and Drive-By: these come naturally over a playthrough if you drive instead of fast-travelling.
  • The secret ending does not lock anything. You can trigger it, then restart and play normally.

Collectibles also include journals and other readable notes (for Well Read), and Thangka paintings, which open the Shangri-La missions.

Story Structure and Endings (Spoilers)

  • Kyrat is split into South and North Kyrat; the north opens up as the story progresses.
  • You decide the fates of the three governors (De Pleur, Noore, Yuma) one at a time, which is why the achievements are named One Down, Two Down and Hat-Trick.
  • At the end you confront Pagan Min. You can shoot him immediately or listen. Listening reveals why he was so fixated on Ajay's mother and leads to the ash-scattering scene; you can still shoot him afterward.
  • The Golden Path's future depends on who you backed: Amita's Kyrat becomes an authoritarian drug state, while Sabal's becomes a hard-line religious regime. Neither is a happy ending.
