A guide to playing Black Ops III on PC in 2026. It covers staying safe online, Zombies (the main reason people still play), Custom Zombies from the Steam Workshop, Multiplayer and its Specialists, and the Campaign.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final official PC patch (Update 30, July 2018) plus the community T7Patch security fix. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status note: Treyarch's last Steam update for Black Ops III was Update 30 (July 30, 2018), a stability and security patch. The game still sells well on Steam, mostly for Zombies and Workshop custom maps. BO3 on PC has had remote code execution (RCE) exploits in the past. The community-standard fix is T7Patch by shiversoftdev. Its README says the game "is still safe to play with a network password" (as of August 3, 2025), and warns that the unpatched game still has dangerous exploits. Install it before you play online at all.
Quick Start
- Install T7Patch before going online. Extract it and run it. For private lobbies with friends, set a network password for the best protection. Everyone who plays with you needs the same password, so leave it off when you want public matchmaking.
- Play Zombies with friends or on custom maps. Public matchmaking still works at peak hours, but friend lobbies and the Workshop are where the community is.
- Owning the right edition matters. The Zombies Chronicles Edition includes 8 remastered classic maps. The DLC maps (Der Eisendrache, Zetsubou No Shima, Gorod Krovi, Revelations) come in the Season Pass, the Zombies Chronicles Edition, or à la carte (sold separately since Update 27).
- Buy Juggernog first in almost every Zombies map. Then Quick Revive (in solo it revives you), Speed Cola, and Stamin-Up.
- Pack-a-Punch your main gun early. A PaP'd gun plus a wonder weapon is the standard high-round setup.
- GobbleGums are consumables. Classic gums come back after each match. Mega gums (from Dr. Monty's Factory using Liquid Divinium) are used up. Save strong Megas like Perkaholic for high rounds.
- In Multiplayer, learn the movement. Thrust jump, wall-run and slide are essential. BO3 is a fast "jetpack era" CoD.
- Cap your FPS sensibly and turn off motion blur. BO3 can stutter uncapped on modern hardware.
Zombies
Base game and DLC maps
Map | Where it comes from | Wonder weapon / key feature
Shadows of Evil | Base game | Beast Mode, Apothicon Servant, rituals, Margwa
The Giant | Bonus map (included in most editions) | Remake of Der Riese, teleporters, Wunderwaffe DG-2
Der Eisendrache | DLC 1 Awakening | Four Wrath of the Ancients bow upgrades, dragons, Panzersoldat
Zetsubou No Shima | DLC 2 Eclipse | KT-4 / Masamune, plants, Thrashers and spiders
Gorod Krovi | DLC 3 Descent | Dragon Strike, GKZ-45 Mk3, Valkyrie drones, Dragons
Revelations | DLC 4 Salvation | Apothicon Servant, Thundergun, the story finale
Zombies Chronicles (8 remastered maps)
Nacht der Untoten, Verrückt, Shi No Numa, Kino der Toten, Ascension, Shangri-La, Moon, Origins.
Core loop
- Rounds 1–5: use your starting pistol and knife to farm points (knife and headshots pay the most per kill). Open doors toward the power.
- Turn on the power. Perks, Pack-a-Punch and traps need it on most maps.
- Buy perks: Juggernog first, then Quick Revive, Speed Cola, Stamin-Up. On DLC maps also consider Widow's Wine (webs that save you when grabbed) or Electric Cherry.
- Hit the Mystery Box for a strong gun or wonder weapon. Update 28 added the RPK to The Giant, Der Eisendrache, Gorod Krovi and all Chronicles maps. Update 29 added the M14 to Ascension, Moon, Shangri-La, Kino and Origins.
- Pack-a-Punch and add an Alternate Ammo Type (Dead Wire, Fire Works, Thunder Wall, Blast Furnace, Turned) when you re-PaP.
- Build the map's wonder weapon or shield, and set up a training route (run zombies in a circle) or a camping spot.
Perk priority cheat sheet
Perk | Why
Juggernog | Survive more hits. Essential
Quick Revive | Self-revive in solo (limited uses), faster revives in co-op
Speed Cola | Faster reloads and faster shield/part building
Stamin-Up | Faster movement for training
Double Tap Root Beer | More damage per bullet
Widow's Wine | Web grenades and escape when grabbed (DLC maps)
Mule Kick | A third weapon slot
Deadshot Daiquiri | Aim assist to heads
Electric Cherry | A reload shock that clears nearby zombies
Map-specific starter tips
- Shadows of Evil: use Beast Mode (at the lamp shrines) to open power, zap electrical boxes, and grab items. Complete the four Rituals to open Pack-a-Punch. The Apothicon Sword comes from a separate egg quest and is a strong melee option.
- Der Eisendrache: build the Wrath of the Ancients bow first (shoot the Dragons in the castle). Each upgrade is a quest: Storm (Lightning), Fire, Void, Wolf. The Ragnarok DG-4 (a side-quest reward) is a great panic tool.
- Zetsubou No Shima: water the plants with the bucket to make perk drops, and build the KT-4 (a multi-part build quest; follow a step guide) for crowd control.
- Gorod Krovi: the Guard of Fafnir dragon shield and the Dragon Strike make high rounds manageable.
- Revelations: a mix of earlier maps. The Apothicon Servant and the Thundergun carry the run.
Easter eggs
Every DLC map has a main quest with a cinematic ending. These are hard, multi-step and best done in a full 4-player group with a guide open. Many require specific wonder weapon upgrades first.
Custom Zombies (Steam Workshop)
Black Ops III's Mod Tools (released in 2016) power a huge Workshop scene of custom Zombies maps and mods.
- Subscribe to a map on the Workshop, then launch Zombies → Mods → load it, or pick the map from the custom maps list.
- Popular categories: remakes of classic maps, big story maps with easter eggs, and "survival" arena maps.
- Custom maps don't give you your normal progression or Megas, and some use their own perks and weapons.
- Update 27 fixed a bug where some downloadable (DLC) maps weren't playable offline.
- If a custom map crashes, verify your game files and unsubscribe/resubscribe the map. Keep T7Patch updated.
Multiplayer
Specialists
Specialist | Weapon (power) | Ability
Ruin | Gravity Spikes | Overdrive
Outrider | Sparrow | Vision Pulse
Prophet | Tempest | Glitch
Battery | War Machine | Kinetic Armor
Seraph | Annihilator | Combat Focus
Nomad | H.I.V.E. | Rejack
Reaper | Scythe | Psychosis
Spectre | Ripper | Active Camo
Firebreak | Purifier | Heat Wave
Pick one per life (weapon or ability). New players get the most value from Battery's Kinetic Armor, Seraph's Combat Focus (more scorestreak points), or Outrider's Vision Pulse.
Create-a-Class (Pick 10)
- Pick 10: 10 points split across weapons, attachments, perks, equipment and Wildcards.
- Popular Pick 10 approach: a primary with 2–3 attachments, a secondary or none, perks like Afterburner, Blind Eye / Ghost, Scavenger / Hard Wired, Dexterity, and Wildcards like Perk 1 Greed if you want extra perks.
Weapons that still hold up
- Assault Rifles: KN-44, ICR-1, HVK-30, M8A7, Man-O-War.
- SMGs: Kuda, VMP, Weevil, Vesper, Pharo.
- LMGs: Dingo, BRM, Dredge, Gorgon.
- Snipers: Locus, Drakon, P-06, SVG-100.
- Shotguns: KRM-262, 205 Brecci, Haymaker 12, Argus.
- Black Market (Supply Drop) weapons also exist. Many are strong but take a lot of grinding.
Movement basics
- Thrust jump: jump, then hold jump in the air for a boosted jump.
- Wall-run: jump at a wall while holding a direction.
- Slide: crouch while sprinting. Slide-to-cover is fast.
- Combine them: slide → jump → wall-run → shoot is how skilled players move on maps like Hunted, Evac, Fringe, Stronghold and the classic remake Nuk3town.
Modes
Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Search & Destroy, Kill Confirmed, CTF, Uplink, Safeguard, Free-for-All, Gun Game, Infected (Update 26), and Operation Heatwave modes like Snipers Only and Sticks and Stones (Update 29).
Campaign
- 11 missions plus the unlockable Nightmares mode (a Zombies-themed remix).
- Up to 4-player co-op, online or offline via splitscreen (console only).
- Cyber cores: pick between Control, Martial and Chaos trees, then swap at safehouses.
- Realistic difficulty is one-hit death, so go for it only with a stable co-op group.
- Collectibles: Collectibles, Accolades and Decorations. Check the mission list for missables.
Settings and Performance on PC
- Motion Blur: Off; Film Grain: Off.
- Frame Rate Target / FPS cap: cap to your monitor's refresh rate or a stable value. Uncapped can stutter on modern CPUs, and T7Patch helps with some FPS issues.
- Video Memory: set to a moderate value. Maxing it on some GPUs causes stutter.
- FOV: raise it for multiplayer (90–110 is common).
- Steam Deck/Linux: T7Patch has Proton instructions in its README.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Playing online without T7Patch and a network password.
- Skipping Juggernog in Zombies.
- Wasting Mega GobbleGums in low rounds.
- Camping in a corner without an exit in Zombies. Pick training routes.
- Using Specialist abilities too early in MP. Save them for objective fights.
- Downloading random mod files outside the Workshop. Stick to Workshop maps and the official T7Patch repo.
Advanced Tips
- Knife and headshot farming in early rounds sets you up for the whole game.
- Training (running zombies in a loop) is safer than camping for high rounds. Learn one training route per map.
- Alternate Ammo Types: Dead Wire and Turned are great crowd tools, and Blast Furnace is good for mid rounds.
- GobbleGum pack planning: put a mix of utility gums (Stock Option, Always Done Swiftly) and power gums (Perkaholic, Shopping Free, Near Death Experience) in your pack.
- MP scorestreaks: Seraph's Combat Focus boosts scorestreak earnings, so pair it with cheap early streaks like the UAV to snowball.
- Custom Zombies ratings: use the Workshop's most-subscribed and highest-rated filters. Big maps often include their own difficulty and perk settings.
