How to play ATLAS, the pirate MMO survival game from the ARK team, in 2026: what state the game is in, how to get started in single-player or on unofficial servers, and the core survival, ship-building, crew, and combat systems.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch v560.3 (May 2023), the last game update, and the Season 13 wipe of June 30, 2023. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Read This First: Game Status

ATLAS is effectively unsupported:

  • The last game patch was v560.3 (May 30, 2023) and the last official announcement was the Season 13 wipe (June 30, 2023). The Steam store page now warns that the last developer update was more than three years ago.
  • It's still labeled Early Access. It entered Early Access in December 2018 with an estimated two years to finish, and never left.
  • The official site (playatlas.com) now just redirects to the Steam store page.
  • The store page still lists official PvP and PvE servers, but there's been no official news about official servers since Season 13. Don't count on an active, maintained official network. Check the Steam discussions or the ATLAS Discord before you buy for multiplayer.
  • What reliably works: single-player and non-dedicated sessions (you plus "up to eight friends", per the store page), plus unofficial community servers. Grapeshot released a Server Grid Editor (SGE) with the official maps and a Devkit (modding kit, on the Epic Games Store) updated to v560.3, so community servers can keep running.
  • Steam reviews sit at Mixed (about 46% positive overall as of September 2026), and recent reviews are only a trickle, a sign of how small the active player base is.

Treat ATLAS as a sandbox for you and friends or a community server, not a live MMO.

Quick Start

  • Choose your mode deliberately. Single-player or a non-dedicated session for friends is the most stable. Unofficial servers offer bigger populations with custom rules.
  • Grab fiber, thatch, wood, and stone immediately. Your first tools, a bed, and a simple shelter all come from these.
  • Keep your vitamins balanced. Since Season 12, each vitamin deficiency gives its own debuff, and vitamin levels persist through death.
  • Build a small boat early. ATLAS is about sailing. A small vessel gets you to better islands and resources.
  • Salt your food and carry water. Long voyages need preserved food and drinks.
  • Join or start a company. Companies share claims, ships, and structures.
  • Learn wind and sails before building anything big. Sail angle decides your speed.
  • Don't sail out alone into the Ships of the Damned. Ghostly NPC ships (SotD) hunt players at sea.
  • Bed down in safe places and set respawn points before long trips.

Core Survival

Your survivor has health, stamina, food, water, weight, and more to manage, similar to ARK.

Need | Why it matters | How to handle it

Food and water | Obvious survival stats | Cook meat and crops, carry waterskins or bottles

Vitamins | Deficiencies cause debuffs (each vitamin has its own since Season 12) | Eat a mix of food types: meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and cooked dishes

Temperature | Cold and heat hurt you | Clothing, fire, and shelter; plan for the region you're heading into

Weight | Overweight means slow or no movement | Build storage and drop junk. Ships have holds

Vitamin levels no longer reset on death (Patch 557.6), so a deficiency will follow you. Keep a varied food stash.

Leveling and Skills

  • You level by gathering, crafting, fighting, and discovering new areas. Discovery zones on islands and wonders give big XP bursts.
  • Skill points go into 15 skill disciplines (per the store page), covering melee, firearms, sailing and ship crafting, taming, building, farming, and so on.
  • Specialize within a company. One player takes building and ship crafting, another combat and firearms, another taming or farming. Nobody can do everything efficiently.

Ships and Sailing

This is the heart of ATLAS. You build ships at a shipyard, piece by piece: hull, planks, decks, gunports, sails, cannons, and more.

Progression

Stage | Vessel | Use

First hours | Raft or dinghy | Hop to nearby islands

Early game | Sloop | Small crew, exploration, light combat

Mid game | Schooner or Brigantine | Real cargo capacity and gun decks

Late game | Galleon | Floating fortress, needs a big crew or many NPC hands

Sailing basics

  • Wind direction decides your speed. Angle your sails to catch it, and don't sail straight into it.
  • Sail types trade speed against handling and weight. Heavier ships need more sail.
  • Weight and cargo slow your ship. Unload before battles.
  • Repair materials (planks and the right resources) should always be aboard.
  • Ship tracking (Patch 557.6): ally, enemy, and Ships of the Damned ships all show on the map in your current grid.

Crew

  • Hire NPC crew at Freeports and other settlements. They man cannons, sails, and other stations, and they need food and gold, or they'll mutiny.
  • A solo captain can run small ships alone. Big ships need crew on the guns, or player friends.
  • Put crew on the stations you use most (cannons on the broadside you fight with, sails if you're maneuvering).

Building and Claims

  • Build bases on land from thatch, then wood, then stone, and better.
  • Claims (islands or land flags) protect your structures. On the last official servers there were claimable islands, claimable lawless regions, and unclaimable lawless regions. Unofficial servers set their own rules.
  • Lawless areas let anyone build and raid, and structures there decay. Don't build your main base there.
  • A shipyard near your base with a dock and storage makes a strong home.

Threats

  • Ships of the Damned (SotD): hostile ghostly NPC ships at sea. Great loot, dangerous when you're alone or undergunned.
  • Army of the Damned (AotD): land enemies. The Season 12 single-player map added AotD Transient nodes to 150+ islands for Cursed Bone Chips.
  • Wildlife: predators on land and dangerous creatures at sea. Tame what you can for help.
  • Players: on PvP servers, other companies. Build defenses and don't leave ships unguarded.
  • Environment: freezing polar regions and scorching deserts.

Taming

You can tame many creatures (for riding, carrying, fighting, or farming resources). Tamed creatures need food and shelter. Patch 560.3 fixed tame-structure issues and tame limit bugs. Build tame houses and hatcheries where your settings allow them.

Endgame and Quest Content

On maps with quest content, you hunt treasure maps, fight bosses, and collect Power Stones from powerful guardians, which leads to the game's endgame challenges. The Season 13 announcement noted that quest content, including Power Stones, was available on the two crossplay servers but not on the small Xbox-only server. On unofficial servers and single-player, what's available depends on the map in use.

The Season 12 single-player map also added:

  • Industrial Transient nodes on 100+ islands for Brimstone.
  • 1 Wonder Island for crafting the Great Temple.

Playing in 2026: Setup Options

Option | Pros | Cons

Single-player | Always available, stable, uses the official single-player map | No other players

Non-dedicated session | Up to 8 friends, no server rental | Host must be online

Unofficial server | Community, custom rules, official maps via SGE | Quality varies; servers can shut down

Official servers | Official rules | No announcements since 2023. Check status before relying on them

If you host, grab the Server Grid Editor (for the official Season 12 and single-player maps) and the Devkit (for mods) from the official announcements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying for the "live MMO" experience. It hasn't been updated since 2023.
  • Ignoring vitamins. Debuffs build up and persist through death.
  • Building a big ship before you can crew or supply it.
  • Leaving your ship parked in the open on PvP servers.
  • Setting sail without repair supplies or food.
  • Building your main base in lawless territory. Anyone can raid it and it decays.
  • Sailing straight into the wind. Learn sail angles first.

Advanced Tips

  • Scout with a small boat, then bring the big ship once you know an island is worth it.
  • Broadsides win fights. Keep your loaded side toward the enemy and manage your turn radius.
  • Board when their guns are empty. Grappling hooks and boarding give companies a way to capture enemy ships instead of sinking them.
  • Stack food before long voyages, and store it in preserving containers where possible.
  • Unofficial servers with boosted rates are the best way for small groups to see late-game content like the Great Temple.

FAQ

Is ATLAS dead? Development has effectively stopped. The last patch was in May 2023 and the last official announcement in June 2023. Single-player, private sessions, and community servers still work.

Can I play ATLAS solo? Yes. Single-player mode uses a dedicated single-player map. Non-dedicated sessions let up to 8 friends join.

Is ATLAS crossplay? Official servers were PC and Xbox crossplay (the store says so), with an Xbox-only server in the last seasons.

Should I buy ATLAS in 2026? Only on a deep discount, and only if you want a pirate sandbox with friends or on a community server. Don't expect updates.

What's the difference from ARK? Same creators and a similar survival base, but ATLAS focuses on building ships, sailing a huge ocean, crews, and naval combat.

How do I host my own server? Use the Server Grid Editor with the official map JSONs, and the Devkit for mods, both linked in the official Steam announcements.
