Everything a new or returning Unturned player needs: staying alive past the first hour, looting smart, building a base that survives raids, and turning skills into an edge on PvP servers.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 3.26.3.12 (September 21, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Start on an official map in singleplayer or PvE first. Germany, PEI, Russia, Washington, and Yukon ship with the game; PEI is the classic "learn the ropes" map. Learn loot spots before you jump onto a PvP server.
- Your first minutes are about food, water, and a weapon — in that order of urgency. Loot houses in small towns, grab any melee weapon, and fill a canteen or bottle.
- Tear up clothing for rags. Crafting rags from spare clothes gives you makeshift bandages; bleeding is what kills most fresh spawns.
- Crouch and walk near zombies. Sprinting and gunfire pull hordes. Melee to the head is the quiet, ammo-free way to clear early.
- Watch the Immunity bar. Eating raw or rotten food, drinking dirty water, and zombie hits raise infection. Vitamins, antibiotics, and purified water fix it.
- Never enter a deadzone without a gas mask and filters. Deadzones strip immunity fast, then health — the best loot is there for a reason.
- Claim a bed as early as possible. A claimed bed is your respawn point, so dying stops meaning a long walk back.
- Spend experience on the skills that match your playstyle — Survival, Cardio, Sharpshooter, and Crafting are strong early picks. You lose a percentage of XP on death, so spend it before you do something risky.
- In multiplayer, trust no one with a gun out. "Friendly?" in voice chat is the oldest trick in Unturned.
Your Vitals
Unturned tracks several status bars. Keeping all of them healthy matters more than your gear early on.
Vital | What drains it | How to restore it
Health | Zombies, players, falls, bleeding, starvation, deadzones | Bandages, dressings, medkits, natural regen (Vitality skill)
Food | Time, sprinting | Canned food, cooked meat, crops, fish
Water | Time, sprinting | Bottled water, canteens, soda; purify dirty water
Stamina | Sprinting, jumping, swinging melee | Rest; Cardio and Exercise skills
Immunity | Raw/rotten food, dirty water, zombie hits, deadzones | Vitamins, antibiotics, purification tablets, clean food and water
Oxygen | Swimming underwater | Surface; Diving skill; scuba gear
Warmth | Cold biomes (snowy maps like Yukon and Russia's north) | Campfires, warm clothing, Warmblooded skill
Status effects to fix immediately:
- Bleeding — the blood drop icon. Any rag/bandage/dressing stops it; the Strength skill makes it stop faster on its own.
- Broken legs — from falls. You move slowly until you use a splint (or it heals with the Strength skill's help).
Looting
Loot tiers scale with location. Rough progression:
Location type | Typical loot
Houses, farms | Food, water, basic clothing, melee weapons, backpacks
Shops, gas stations, supermarkets | Canned food, drinks, tools, fuel containers
Police stations | Pistols, ammo, police clothing, handcuffs
Fire stations | Axes, fire gear
Hospitals | Medical supplies (bandages, medkits, antibiotics)
Military bases and checkpoints | Rifles, military backpacks and vests, helmets, grenades
Deadzones and airfields | The rarest end-game items
Inventory tips:
- Your carry space comes from clothing: backpack, vest, shirt, and pants each add slots. A military or alice backpack is a huge early upgrade.
- Rotate items while dragging them to squeeze them into gaps.
- Drop junk. Loot respawns, and a full inventory in a firefight is a liability.
Zombies
Zombies are the constant threat on every map. Types you will run into:
Type | What to know
Normal | Slow walkers and runners; headshots with melee are efficient
Crawlers / Sprinters | Fast and low; don't try to outrun sprinters
Mega zombies | Huge health pools; guard high-value locations. Use rifles or avoid
Acid spitters and Burners | Ranged or elemental attacks; close distance or kill first
Flankers | Hard-to-see stalkers that ambush you
Radioactive | Deadzone-only; explode in green biohazard on death — don't melee them at point-blank
Noise draws hordes. Unsuppressed guns will pull everything in a town toward you; if you need to shoot, do it from rooftops or with a suppressor attached.
Skills
Experience comes from killing zombies, animals, and players; harvesting crops and resources; completing quests; destroying firing range targets; and selling to NPC vendors. On death you lose a percentage of your XP and skill levels (the amount depends on difficulty and server settings), but your chosen skillset (Firefighter, Police Officer, Spec Ops, Farmer, Fisher, Lumberjack, Worker, Chef, Thief, Doctor, or Civilian) keeps its skills and makes them cheaper to level.
Tree | Best early picks | Why
Offense | Cardio (V), Sharpshooter (VII), Exercise (V), Overkill (VII) | Stamina, recoil control, movement, melee damage
Defense | Survival (V), Immunity (V), Vitality (V), Sneakybeaky (VII) | Less food/water drain, virus resistance, regen, quieter movement
Support | Crafting (III), Engineer (III), Outdoors (V), Healing (VII) | Unlocks advanced blueprints and faster gathering
Priority order for a base builder: Crafting to III (needed for items like the Claim Flag) → Engineer → Outdoors → Survival. Priority order for a PvP player: Sharpshooter → Cardio → Exercise → Vitality.
Crafting
Open the crafting menu from your inventory screen. Blueprints show which items and tools are required; missing a tool (saw, hammer, blowtorch) is the most common reason a recipe is greyed out.
Early crafting chain:
- Clothing → Rags → Dressings. Your first medical supply line.
- Logs → Planks → Sticks. Chop trees with an axe or chainsaw. Planks feed almost every wooden structure.
- Metal scrap. Salvage metal items and structures for scrap, which feeds metal barricades and tools.
- Campfire. Cooks meat (raw meat raises infection) and keeps you warm.
Useful mid-game crafts:
- Wooden and metal structures (frames, walls, doorways, doors)
- Storage crates and lockers
- Rain barrels and water purification setups
- Crop plots for renewable food (Agriculture skill boosts yield)
- Generators and lighting
- Claim Flag (see below)
Base Building
Where to build
- Away from loot hotspots. Players path through military bases and towns; a base next to one gets found.
- Near water and trees. Fresh logs and water cut your supply runs.
- Hidden, not just high. Islands, cliff edges, and dense forests beat open fields.
Claiming land
- Claim a bed — claiming a bed sets your respawn point. Put it deep inside the base.
- Claim Flag — protects a 32m radius so other players can't build inside it (except a few items like remote explosives and picket signs). Recipe: 2 Wire, 2 Cloth, 1 Glue, 1 Chemicals, with a Blowtorch and Crafting III.
Construction tips
- Upgrade from wood to metal as soon as you can. Wood is fine for day one but falls quickly to raids.
- Layer doors. Two or more locked doors between the outside and your loot massively raises raid cost.
- Split your loot. Several hidden stashes across the base mean one breach doesn't lose everything.
- Plan an entrance you can reach by vehicle if you drive — cars left outside are free loot for others.
- Watch the server's decay settings. Many servers remove structures that go unvisited; check the rules in the server description.
Vehicles
- Fuel — fill gas cans at gas station pumps and refuel by holding the can against the vehicle. Some vehicles use batteries too; bring a spare.
- Tires can be shot out, and a car with flats is barely drivable. Carry spares on long trips.
- Lock your vehicle after entering it, and park inside your base or out of sight.
- Helicopters and planes appear on some maps and are the fastest way across them — and the loudest.
Deadzones
Deadzones are contaminated areas that rapidly drain immunity, then health. You need:
- A gas mask with a non-depleted filter (carry spares — filters run out).
- Possibly biohazard clothing, depending on the zone.
- Healing and immunity items for the trip out.
They also spawn radioactive zombies, which explode on death. In return, deadzones hold the rarest end-game loot on the map.
Maps
Type | Maps
Official | Germany, PEI, Russia, Washington, Yukon
Curated (Workshop, officially endorsed) | France, A6 Polaris, Arid, Belgium, Buak, California, Carpat, Cyprus, Easter Island, Elver, Escalation, Greece, Hawaii, Ireland, Kuwait, Limestone, Rio de Janeiro, and more
Arena (battle royale-style) | Alpha Valley, Monolith, Paintball Arena, PEI Arena, Washington Arena, plus curated Arena maps
Recommendations:
- PEI — small, simple, perfect for learning.
- Washington / Russia — larger, more varied, good step up. Russia has cold areas that test warmth management.
- Curated maps like Buak, Kuwait, and A6 Polaris — tons of NPC quests, custom items, and progression; great once you've mastered the basics.
Curated maps are downloaded from the Steam Workshop, not bundled with the game.
PvP Survival
- Spawn, gear, fight — not the other way around. Don't take fights with a melee weapon against geared players.
- Stay off the skyline. Walking on ridges makes you easy to spot at range.
- Use suppressors and scopes from military loot for long-range fights; Sharpshooter makes a big difference.
- Carry heals in your hotbar. Swapping to your inventory mid-fight gets you killed.
- Log out inside your base. Your character stays in the world on many servers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sprinting everywhere. It burns food, water, and stamina, and pulls zombies.
- Eating raw meat. Cook it on a campfire first; raw food tanks immunity.
- Entering deadzones unprepared. No mask, no entry — and bring spare filters.
- Hoarding XP. You lose a percentage on death; spend it.
- Building next to military bases or airfields. You will be raided.
- Leaving vehicles unlocked or parked outside. Someone will drive off in them.
- Joining random servers without reading rules. Loot multipliers, decay, and raid rules vary wildly.
- Joining servers or accepting invites from people you don't trust. SDG has reported an increase in malicious Workshop content in 2026. Patch 3.26.3.5 (July 30) blocked Workshop components that could call restricted game methods (such as opening URLs), 3.26.3.10 closed another exploit path, and 3.26.3.12 (September 21) fixed cheats that used fake lobby IDs to join other players' groups. Keep the game updated.
Advanced Tips
- Headshots with melee are the most efficient zombie clear in the game and save ammo for PvP.
- Farm XP safely by harvesting crops and resources or selling to NPC vendors on curated maps.
- Keep a "death kit" at base: a stash with a gun, ammo, food, water, and meds so every respawn is instantly back in action.
- Stack defenses in depth: outer walls, inner walls, locked doors, then split loot rooms.
- Scout with binoculars before raiding or looting high-tier spots — campers love military bases.
- Learn your map's respawn and loot spots. Knowing exactly which building has what beats random looting.
- On curated maps, follow the NPC questlines. They often unlock the best gear and currency.
FAQ
Is Unturned free? Yes. It is free-to-play on Steam; the store sells cosmetics and the Gold upgrade.
How do I stop bleeding? Use any bandage, rag, or dressing. The Strength skill makes bleeding stop faster naturally.
How do I cure infection? Use vitamins, antibiotics, or purification tablets, and avoid raw food and dirty water. The Immunity skill slows the virus.
Do I lose my skills when I die? You lose a percentage of your experience and skill levels, depending on difficulty and server settings. Skills covered by your skillset are kept.
What is the best map for beginners? PEI. It is small, easy to navigate, and has all the core mechanics.
How do I stop people building near my base? Place a Claim Flag (Crafting III, Blowtorch). It blocks other players' construction within a 32m radius.
Is the source code really public? Yes. Smartly Dressed Games announced "Unturned's Source Code Released" on July 7, 2026; the source and project files are on GitHub, and SDG encourages modders to use them for total-conversion projects.
