A guide to Path of Exile 1 for new and returning players: classes and ascendancies, gems and sockets (reworked in 3.29), campaign tips, the Atlas endgame, currency, and the current league, Curse of the Allflame.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Path of Exile 3.29: Curse of the Allflame (launched July 24, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Play the current league. Leagues start everyone with fresh characters and a fresh economy; Standard keeps old characters.
  • Follow a build guide for your first character. PoE's passive tree and gem system are huge; a tested league starter saves hours.
  • Understand the new socket rules (3.29). Items now have white sockets by default, so any gem fits any socket. Matching colors still grant bonuses.
  • Cap elemental resistances at 75%. You lose resistances after Act 5 and Act 10; fix them before moving on.
  • Get movement skills and flasks early. Mobility and good flasks carry you through the campaign.
  • Do the Labyrinth for Ascendancy points. Normal, Cruel, and Merciless Labs unlock your Ascendancy passives; Eternal Lab completes it in maps.
  • Use loot filters. Filters from sites like FilterBlade hide junk and highlight valuable drops.
  • Learn the league mechanic. In 3.29, find Lost Charts in maps and take them to Valerie's ship, the Sovereign.
  • Use the Currency Exchange. Trade currencies with Faustus rather than relying only on player trades.

Classes and Ascendancies

Class | Ascendancies | Common archetypes

Marauder | Juggernaut, Berserker, Chieftain | Strength melee, ignite

Ranger | Deadeye, Pathfinder, Warden | Bows, flasks, poison

Witch | Necromancer, Elementalist, Occultist | Spells, minions, chaos

Duelist | Slayer, Gladiator, Champion | Melee, bleed, block

Templar | Inquisitor, Hierophant, Guardian | Elemental spells, totems

Shadow | Assassin, Saboteur, Trickster | Crit, traps, mines

Scion | Ascendant, Reliquarian, Luminary | Hybrid builds, mercenary builds

New in 3.29: Luminary, a new Scion Ascendancy built around permanently hiring a Mercenary and unlocking unique item slots one by one. Check the in-game Ascendancy screen to confirm which Scion options are live in your league.

Gems and Sockets

How gems work

  • Skill gems grant active skills.
  • Support gems modify linked skills.
  • Links connect gems; more links mean more supports.

3.29 socket rework

  • Items now have fully white sockets by default and can hold any gem.
  • Chromatic Orbs now guarantee at least one colored socket.
  • Matching socket and gem color grants bonuses such as +10% Gem Quality for that gem.

Campaign Tips

  • Act 1–10: level your character and unlock ascendancy.
  • Resistances: you lose resistances after Act 5 and Act 10, so plan to cap them.
  • Labyrinth: each difficulty opens once you finish its six Ascendancy Trials: Normal Lab (trials in Acts 1–3), Cruel Lab (trials in Acts 6–7), Merciless Lab (trials in Acts 8–10). The trials are marked on the map with a Trial icon; don't skip them as you pass through.
  • Flasks: keep a Life Flask and utility flasks (Quicksilver, Granite, Jade).
  • Vendor recipes: use them to create early gear upgrades.

The Atlas Endgame

Atlas basics

  • The Atlas of Worlds is the endgame map system.
  • Atlas passives customize your map rewards and league mechanics.
  • Voidstones increase map tiers and unlock higher difficulty.

3.29 Atlas changes

  • Atlas Anomalies: completing a map affected by a Voidstone can manifest an Anomaly at the edge of your Atlas. These special zones are not affected by Atlas passives and host encounters like Reflecting Mists, Nameless Seers, or Heist content.
  • Core mechanic reworks:
  • Abyss no longer snakes slowly across the map; Abysses spawn pre-opened and pay out treasure after you defeat specific monsters.
  • Legion removes Incubators and introduces Stygial Unique Items via Enshrouding Crystals.
  • Talismans now drop only from Red Beasts and use Enchantment Modifiers instead of corrupted implicits.

League Mechanic: Curse of the Allflame

Loop overview

  • Find Lost Charts in maps (guarded by monsters).
  • Take them aboard Valerie's ship, the Sovereign.
  • Use the Bathysphere to descend to the sea floor.
  • Place up to seven Allflame Lanterns to create oxygen bubbles underwater.
  • Collect Luminous Coral near your lanterns to earn Dead Man's Sulphur, the league's crafting resource.
  • Once you have nine Charts, arrange them in a grid to create a Voyage, a larger run through connected areas.

Voyage tips

  • Tiles grant bonuses to adjacent areas (for example, more currency found in adjacent areas); hover each tile to read its modifiers and place your best bonuses next to the areas you care about most.
  • The Sovereign is the hub for starting Charts, Voyages, retrieving items, and crafting.

Mercenaries (3.29 changes)

  • Mercenaries are no longer permanent and disappear after a number of areas, unless you are a Luminary.
  • You can "bottle up" mercenaries by defeating them to get tradeable Warrants.
  • Mercenaries no longer count as additional party members.

Currency Basics

Currency | Common use

Chaos Orb | Reroll rare modifiers; main trade currency

Divine Orb | Reroll values of modifiers; high-value trade currency

Exalted Orb | Add a random modifier

Orb of Alteration | Reroll magic item modifiers

Orb of Fusing | Reroll socket links

Chromatic Orb | Reroll socket colors (now guarantees at least one colored socket)

Jeweller's Orb | Reroll socket count

League Starter Builds (3.29)

Long-standing, budget-friendly league starter archetypes (check a current 3.29 guide on Maxroll or poe.ninja for this league's exact versions and balance changes):

Build | Class/Ascendancy

Holy Flame Totem | Templar / Hierophant

Boneshatter | Marauder / Juggernaut

Ice Nova | Witch / Elementalist

Lightning Arrow | Ranger / Deadeye

Essence Drain Contagion | Witch / Occultist

Carrion Golems & Zombies | Witch / Necromancer

Storm Brand | Templar / Inquisitor

Earthquake | Duelist / Gladiator

Exsanguinate Miner | Shadow / Trickster

Kinetic Blast | Ranger / Deadeye

Check build guides for current balance changes and patch notes after league launch.

3.29 Balance Highlights

  • Spell buffs: 3.29 is a self-cast spell-focused balance patch; read the patch notes for your skill.
  • Physical spells such as Ethereal Knives, Bladefall, and Blade Vortex have much higher critical strike chance than other spells.
  • Pure Lightning spells get faster cast speeds.
  • Self-cast support: new class-specific Notables, such as the Assassin's spell crit notable and the Occultist's channeling-focused Spirit Infusion.

Defenses Checklist for Mapping

Most early map deaths come from missing one of these layers. Check them before pushing into higher-tier maps:

Layer | Target | Why it matters

Elemental resistances | 75% fire, cold, lightning | Map mods and bosses deal heavy elemental damage

Chaos resistance | Work toward positive, then higher | Chaos damage bypasses energy shield

Life or energy shield pool | Grow steadily with map tier | One-shots are usually a pool problem

Recovery | Life flask, leech, regen, or recoup | Lets you recover between hits

Mitigation | Armour, evasion, block, or spell suppression | Reduces the damage of each hit

Ailment immunity | Flask suffixes or passives for freeze, bleed, and others | Freeze and bleed are common killers

  • Read map modifiers before running. Reroll or skip mods your build cannot handle, such as reflect or no-regen for the wrong build.
  • Your flask setup should include a way to remove bleed, freeze, and other dangerous ailments.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring resistances. Cap them after Act 5 and Act 10.
  • Skipping the Labyrinth. Ascendancy points are essential.
  • Rushing maps without defenses. Build life, energy shield, or armor to survive.
  • Not using a loot filter. Valuable drops get lost in clutter.
  • Wasting currency on random crafting. Save it for targeted upgrades.

Advanced Tips

  • Use Atlas passives to target farm. Focus on league mechanics or map types you enjoy.
  • Craft with purpose. Use Essences, Fossils, and bench crafts to build gear.
  • Farm Dead Man's Sulphur. It is a key reward from the league mechanic.
  • Use Anomalies for special encounters. These can lead to unique rewards.
  • Trade efficiently. Use the official trade site and the Currency Exchange.
