How to stop dying in the Mines and start actually winning runs: controls, the physics you must respect, how wands and spells really work, the perk and potion choices that save runs, a biome-by-biome route to the Laboratory, and what the Epilogue 2 update changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Epilogue 2 update (April 2024) plus the later bugfix builds (latest: January 25, 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Noita is a physics game first. Fire spreads, liquids flow, gas rises, explosions dig. Most deaths are self-inflicted — read the environment before you shoot.
- Stay wet or get wet. Being soaked (a "wet" stain) protects you from catching fire. Water flasks and pools are your friends.
- Always go down. The main route is vertical: each biome ends in a Holy Mountain that heals you, refills wands and offers perks and shops.
- Holy Mountains are sacred. Don't damage them or pick fights inside — breaking the temple triggers a very dangerous guardian.
- Edit wands only in Holy Mountains unless you've taken the Tinker with Wands Everywhere perk.
- Pick up gold quickly. Dropped gold nuggets vanish after a while.
- Prioritize defensive perks early. Immunities and Extra Life are worth more than raw damage on a first win.
- Don't drink unknown liquids casually. Some potions (like polymorphine) can end your run instantly.
- Learn one good wand, not ten bad ones. A reliable digging/attack wand beats a pile of random wands.

Wands & Spells Explained
Wand stats
Stat | Meaning
Shuffle | "Yes" means spells fire in random order — usually bad. Prefer "No".
Spells/Cast | How many spells fire per click.
Cast delay | Delay between casts. Lower = faster.
Recharge time | Delay after all spells fire. Lower = faster.
Mana max | Total mana.
Mana charge speed | Mana regeneration.
Capacity | Spell slots.
Spread | Accuracy; lower is better.
Some wands also have always-cast spells built in.
How casting works
- Spells are read left to right.
- Projectile spells (Spark Bolt, Magic Arrow, Bouncing Burst, etc.) fire.
- Modifiers (Damage Plus, Homing, Piercing Shot, Heavy Shot, etc.) apply to the next projectile.
- Multicasts (Double Spell, Triple Spell) cast multiple spells at once.
- Trigger/timer spells (e.g., "Spark Bolt with Trigger") cast a payload when they hit or expire.
- Limited-use spells have charges; the Unlimited Spells perk makes most of them infinite.
Beginner wand goals
- A digging tool — Digging Bolt, Luminous Drill or Chainsaw on a fast wand.
- A reliable damage wand — Spark Bolt or Magic Arrow with modifiers on a no-shuffle wand.
- Mobility/utility — Teleport Bolt for escaping or crossing gaps.
Key tip: Add Mana and Chainsaw reduce cast delay and can make fast wands.
Holy Mountains
Between each biome is a Holy Mountain with:
- Full heal and wand refill.
- Perk choice (choose one).
- Spell shop and wand shop.
- Spell refresher (refills limited spells).
Warning: Damaging the Holy Mountain triggers Stevari (Steve), a powerful guardian. Avoid explosions and digging inside.
Biome Route (main path)
Order | Biome | Notes
1 | Mines | Starting area; learn basics
2 | Coal Pits | More enemies, oil and coal
3 | Snowy Depths | Ice, snow, dangerous mages
4 | Hiisi Base | Many ranged Hiisi enemies
5 | Underground Jungle | Poison, worms and vegetation
6 | The Vault | Laser traps and robotics
7 | Temple of the Art | Dangerous enemies, puzzles
8 | The Laboratory | Final boss: Kolmisilmä
There's a Holy Mountain between each biome on this route.
Endgame
- In The Laboratory, you face Kolmisilmä.
- The boss gets dramatically stronger with the number of orbs you've collected (see below).
- After the fight, pick up the Sampo and carry it onward through the Laboratory to trigger the ending.
Orbs & Endings
- There are 11 orbs in the main world, and more in parallel worlds.
- The first time you ever collect a given orb it unlocks a new spell; after that, it gives a +25 max HP pickup instead.
- Every orb makes Kolmisilmä much tougher — its health rises exponentially with each orb and it gains extra abilities (the wiki cites over 131,000 HP with all 11 main-world orbs). For a first win, carry few or none.
- Different orb counts and actions lead to different endings.
- Hardcore players aim for the 33-orb ending.
Perks (priority picks)
Perk | Why
Extra Life | Saves your run once
Fire Immunity | Removes a common cause of death
Explosion Immunity | Lets you use explosive spells safely
Toxic Immunity | Protects from toxic sludge
Electricity Immunity | Protects from electric damage
Tinker with Wands Everywhere | Edit wands anywhere
Unlimited Spells | Makes limited spells infinite
Vampirism | Heal by drinking blood (costs 25% max HP; lowers your Halo)
Saving Grace | Prevents one-hit deaths when above 1 HP
Repelling Cape | Pushes enemies away
Materials & Potions
Material | Effect
Water | Extinguishes fire; makes you wet
Oil | Burns; dangerous near fire
Acid | Dissolves materials; harmful
Toxic sludge | Poisons
Lava | Burns everything
Polymorphine | Transforms you into an animal — can kill runs
Teleportatium | Random teleport
Berserkium | Increases damage
Healthium | Heals
Concentrated mana | Increases mana regeneration
Potions can be thrown to spread materials, or drunk. Learn which potions are safe.
Epilogue 2 Update (April 2024)
Added:
- New spells like Sparkly Bounce, Lightning Bounce, Vacuum Bounce, Null Shot, Inner Spell, Giga White Hole, True Orbit, Hookbolt, Anti Homing, Holy Lance.
- 8 new modifier spells, 6 new enemies, 3 new boss fights, 1 new small biome, new materials and reactions, and a new secret quest.
- Old saves didn't carry over; the "update_20240214" beta branch let players finish runs on the old version.
Later bugfixes (April 30, 2024) tamed Tapion vasalli and fixed various crashes and Nightmare Mode perks.
A First-Win Gameplan
- Mines: Test both starting wands on a wall. Keep the one that digs or kills reliably, and hold on to your starting flask — refill it with water if it isn't water already.
- First Holy Mountains: Spend gold on one strong upgrade (a no-shuffle wand with good capacity, or a key spell) rather than several small ones. Take a survival perk if one is offered.
- Coal Pits and Snowy Depths: Fight at range, use corners, and kick explosive barrels away from yourself. Snowy Depths mages can wipe you quickly — break line of sight and let them come to you.
- Hiisi Base: Lots of ranged enemies and flammable/explosive clutter. Move slowly, dig around fights where you can, and don't linger near oil.
- Underground Jungle and the Vault: Toxic, electric and laser hazards pile up. This is where immunity perks pay off and where a digging wand lets you skip dangerous rooms.
- Temple of the Art: The hardest normal biome for many players. Commit to the fastest safe route down; this is not the place to explore every corner on a first win.
- The Laboratory: Arrive with full HP from the final Holy Mountain, a damage wand you trust and a way to keep distance. Take your time learning the fight.
Habit to build: when entering any new room, look first for liquids and gas above and below you. Knowing where the lava, oil and acid are is half of Noita.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Setting yourself on fire. Carry water and stay wet.
- Using explosives near yourself. Explosions kill quickly.
- Breaking Holy Mountains. Triggers Steve.
- Picking shuffle wands. Unreliable spell order.
- Drinking unknown potions. Polymorphine can be fatal.
- Ignoring gold. It disappears.
- Rushing. Go slowly and observe the environment.
Advanced Tips
- Build a "digging wand." Speeds up routes and escapes.
- Use Add Mana and Chainsaw for fast casting.
- Learn trigger wands. They create powerful combos.
- Use Teleport Bolt to escape danger.
- Chase immunities early — they allow more aggressive play.
- Kick potions away if dangerous.
- Use mods after learning the base game — the mod API is extensive.
