This guide explains what still works in NBA 2K21 now that its servers are gone. It covers the core gameplay (Pro Stick shooting, defense, playcalling) and how to get the most out of the offline modes that remain.

Researched September 2026, current as of the final PC build; online services ended 31 December 2022 and the game is delisted from Steam. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Server status: 2K shut down all NBA 2K21 multiplayer servers as of 12/31/2022. The Steam page says that after that date "all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function," and the game is no longer available for purchase on Steam. If you already own it, you can still download and play it from your library. Everything below focuses on what works offline.

Quick Start

  • Accept that the online side is gone. MyTEAM, the Neighborhood (Park, Pro-Am, Rec, 2K Compete events), online head-to-head and anything that uses VC through 2K's servers are offline for good.
  • Play Now, Blacktop, local multiplayer and the franchise modes (MyLeague/MyGM) are what's left. They're still a complete basketball sim.
  • Use a controller. The game is built around the Pro Stick (right stick). Keyboard play works but is a real handicap for shot aiming and dribble moves.
  • Learn Pro Stick shot aiming early. 2K21 introduced aiming jump shots and layups with the stick. It's the biggest change from older 2K games.
  • Start on Pro or All-Star difficulty and adjust from there. Hall of Fame is a big jump.
  • Tune sliders if the AI feels scripted. MyLeague exposes gameplay and sim sliders for exactly this.
  • The PC version is the "current-gen" build. The next-gen features (The City, MyNBA, WNBA MyCareer) were PS5/Xbox Series only and never came to Steam.
  • Want live online basketball? Moving to a newer NBA 2K release is the only official route.

What Works and What Doesn't

Mode | Status on PC | Notes

Play Now (quick game) | Works | NBA, classic and all-time teams

Blacktop | Works | Streetball-style pickup games offline

Local multiplayer | Works | Couch play on one PC with multiple controllers

MyLeague (offline) | Works | Full franchise control with sliders and customization

MyLeague Online | Dead | Shared online leagues ran on 2K's servers; only offline MyLeague saves still work

MyGM | Works | Franchise mode with role-playing GM elements

WNBA | Works offline | Wikipedia notes all 12 WNBA teams are playable across full seasons in 2K21

MyCAREER | Unreliable/limited | Built around VC and 2K's online services; expect progression features to fail

The Neighborhood (Park, Pro-Am, Rec) | Dead | Online-only

MyTEAM | Dead | Pack opening, auction house and seasons were all server-side

Online Play Now / ranked | Dead | Requires 2K servers

2K Share (downloadable rosters, draft classes) | Dead | Community content downloads were server-backed

If the game tries to connect when it starts and fails, carry on in offline mode. The modes marked "Works" don't need a connection.

Editions and Cover Athletes (for reference)

Edition | Cover

Standard (current-gen, which includes PC) | Damian Lillard

Next-gen standard (PS5/Xbox Series) | Zion Williamson

Mamba Forever edition | Kobe Bryant tribute cover

The game launched on 4 September 2020. The next-gen versions followed in November 2020.

Core Controls (Controller)

These are the standard 2K-style defaults. Check Options > Controller Settings in-game for the full layout, since several are situational.

Action | Xbox layout | What it's for

Pro Stick | Right stick | Dribble moves, shot aiming, and layup types

Shoot | X | Jump shot, or hold for a stronger release

Pass | A | Standard pass to the selected teammate

Sprint | RT | Burst speed; drains energy

Post up | LT | Back down a defender

Steal (defense) | X | Swipe at the ball; overuse causes reach-in fouls

Block / rebound (defense) | Y | Contest at the rim or box out for the board

Switch player (defense) | A | Change to the defender nearest the ball

Pro Stick shot aiming (new in 2K21)

  • Pull and hold the Pro Stick in a shooting direction to start the shot, then aim the stick into the target window on the meter instead of just timing a button release.
  • You can switch the shot meter, shot timing type and aiming settings in the controller options. If aiming feels impossible, the button (X) with release timing is still an option.
  • Layups can be steered with the stick too, for example to choose which side of the rim to finish on.
  • Practice in an offline Play Now game on a low difficulty with a player whose jumper you like. Every player has a slightly different release.

Offense Fundamentals

  • Shot quality beats shot timing. Open, in-rhythm shots from a player's best spots are worth more than a perfectly timed contested fadeaway. Watch the defender's proximity before shooting.
  • Use the pick and roll. Call for a screen, read whether the big switches or drops, then attack the space he leaves.
  • Drive and kick. Collapsing the paint with a slasher opens corner threes. The AI rotates, but not perfectly.
  • Post up mismatches. When a guard ends up on your big after a switch, get into the post (LT) and go to work.
  • Don't spam sprint. Players with the ball lose control and stamina when you hold RT constantly. Use it in bursts to beat a man off the dribble.
  • Call plays. The playbook gives you set actions for your stars. When you're struggling to create, running actual plays is more reliable than isolation.

Defense Fundamentals

  • Stay between your man and the basket. Hold the defensive stance and don't lunge. Fewer gambles means fewer blow-bys.
  • Contest, don't block, jump shots. Getting a hand up usually beats jumping for a block you'll miss.
  • Limit steal attempts. Repeated swipes lead to reach-in fouls and pull you out of position.
  • Control the paint. Switch to your big when a drive happens so you can rotate in person rather than trusting the AI.
  • Box out. Rebounding battles decide close games on higher difficulties.

Difficulty Levels

Difficulty | Who it suits

Rookie | Learning controls

Pro | Casual play; forgiving AI

All-Star | Balanced default for most players

Superstar | Tighter AI defense and smarter rotations

Hall of Fame | Very punishing; best with slider tweaks

Franchise Modes: MyLeague and MyGM

These are where NBA 2K21's long-term value still lives offline.

MyLeague gives you control of one or all 30 teams, with deep customization over trades, contracts, the draft, league rules and sim sliders. It's the best mode for a long, realistic simulation.

MyGM adds role-playing management on top: dealing with owner expectations, player morale and staff. Choose it if you like the story side of running a team.

Franchise tips

  • Plan around cap space. Bad long contracts are the most common reason a franchise stalls a few seasons in.
  • Draft for upside, sign for fit. High-potential rookies take time. Veterans fill immediate holes.
  • Watch team chemistry and roles. Players unhappy with their minutes can become a problem in MyGM.
  • Use the sim sliders to fix unrealistic stats (e.g. too many threes or too few injuries) rather than editing individual games.
  • Roster updates are frozen. Rosters are stuck at the last official update before shutdown, and downloading community rosters through 2K Share is gone. You can still edit players and trades manually.

Blacktop and Local Play

Blacktop is quick pickup basketball with no franchise attached. It's good for couch sessions or practicing specific players. With two or more controllers connected, local Play Now games are the only head-to-head left in 2K21.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying VC or expecting MyTEAM to work. It won't. Don't try to purchase in-game currency for a game with no servers.
  • Using keyboard for Pro Stick-heavy play. Shot aiming and dribble combos are designed for an analog stick.
  • Ignoring shot settings. If your jumpers feel random, check whether you're on stick aiming or button timing and pick the one you practice with.
  • Holding sprint all game. It burns stamina and makes ball handlers sloppy.
  • Over-gambling for steals. Reach-ins and blow-bys are the top causes of easy points against you.
  • Starting a long MyLeague without setting sliders and rules first. Some settings are hard to change after the league starts.
  • Expecting next-gen content. The City and MyNBA were never in the PC version.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn each star's hot zones. Players shoot noticeably better from their preferred spots. Design your offense around them.
  • Use timeouts to manage stamina and momentum on higher difficulties. The AI goes on runs if you let tired lineups stay on the floor.
  • Mix inside and outside. Consistently attacking the paint makes the AI pack it in, which opens perimeter shots.
  • Create custom draft classes and players offline. Without community downloads, custom creation is how you keep a long MyLeague fresh.
  • Back up your save files. With no online services, your local saves are the only record of your franchise.
  • For a modern online experience, a newer NBA 2K release is the official successor. 2K's Steam news for 2K21 pointed players to NBA 2K22 in September 2021, and the series has had yearly releases since.
