A player's guide to Muse Dash on PC: how the two-lane system and note types work, setup for accurate timing, characters and Elfins, how to unlock songs, hidden charts, and a practice plan from your first Easy clear to full combos on Master.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the 25 September 2026 update ("Calling Card from R" character pack with Phantom Thief Rin, the "Slumbering Golden Mark" concept pack, and "Cryogenic" added to Default Music). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Two lanes, two jobs. One set of keys hits the air lane (upper), the other hits the ground lane (lower). Every enemy tells you which lane it's in.
- Calibrate latency first. Use the latency/offset setting in Settings before judging your accuracy. A wrong offset makes Perfects impossible.
- Use more than two keys. Bind two or more keys per lane (one per hand) so you can alternate on fast streams instead of jackhammering one finger.
- Don't hit gears. Spiked gears and obstacles damage you if you're in their lane. Jump over ground obstacles by hitting air, or just stay out of the way.
- Hold notes are held, mashers are mashed. Long bars need you to hold; big "masher" enemies want rapid presses.
- Grab hearts and music notes. Hearts heal; music notes add score. Be in their lane as they arrive.
- Clear songs on Hard before chasing Master. Master charts are much denser; Hard builds the reading skills.
- Level up by playing. Your account level unlocks free songs and bonus illustrations.
- Muse Plus ("Muse Dash - Muse Plus" on Steam) is the one-time DLC that unlocks all music packs (the base game includes 62 songs plus free additions). Buy it if you like the game; it goes on sale regularly.
How Muse Dash Plays
Muse Dash is a side-scrolling rhythm game. Enemies and obstacles scroll in from the right, timed to the song. You hit them as they reach your character.
Note types
Note | What to do
Single enemy (air or ground) | Hit its lane on the beat
Double | Enemies in both lanes at once: hit air and ground together
Hold (long bar) | Press and hold for the length of the bar
Masher (big enemy) | Mash the key rapidly until it breaks
Gear/obstacle | Avoid: don't be in that lane when it passes
Ghost | Fades out before reaching you; memorize the rhythm
Heart | Grab it in its lane to recover HP
Music note | Grab it in its lane for bonus score
Boss attacks | Bosses throw projectiles in lanes; treat them as regular notes
Judgments, combo, and ranks
- Perfect / Great / Miss judge each hit. Perfects give full score.
- Combo increases score; missing resets it.
- Accuracy determines your letter rank on the results screen; higher accuracy means a higher rank.
- Full Combo (FC) means no misses; All Perfect (AP) means only Perfects.
HP and Fever
- You have an HP bar. Taking hits from enemies you miss or gears you hit drains it; running out fails the song.
- Fever fills as you hit notes. When active, it boosts score. Some characters and Elfins interact with Fever.
Characters and Elfins
Characters (Muses)
The main cast is Rin, Buro, and Marija, with many costume variants and collab characters added over the years. Each costume has its own max HP and passive skill. Some skills make the game easier (for example, more HP, auto-avoiding some damage) while others change scoring.
Recent additions include Diver Buro (the DAVE THE DIVER collab pack, February 2026), Umarija made by Ora 2 (April Fools' 2026 concept pack), Ghosts Marija (8th anniversary, June 2026), and Phantom Thief Rin (September 2026).
How to choose:
- Learning songs: pick a high-HP character or one with a survival passive so you can see the whole chart.
- Score attack: pick a character with no scoring penalty; some practice-friendly passives reduce score or disable certain records.
- Always read the skill text on the character screen before assuming.
Elfins
Elfins are companions that add a second passive (healing, score, or quality-of-life effects). Combine an Elfin with a character to cover weaknesses, for example healing for survival or score boosts for leaderboards.
Songs, Packs, and Unlocks
- Default Music includes a base list of songs, plus free additions over time (for example, "Stra Stella" from the DAVE THE DIVER collab and "Cryogenic" from In Falsus in September 2026).
- Free unlocks by level: some packs unlock for free at certain account levels (for example, the Wuthering Waves collab pack unlocks at Level 45).
- Muse Plus: one purchase unlocks all current and future paid music packs, characters, Elfins, title screens, and illustrations. The Steam store describes around 500 songs included, and owners also get permanent discounts on DLC bought separately.
- MD Plus Project: an ongoing pack that keeps receiving new tracks, including collab songs (for example, "Help me, ERINNNNNN!!" joined it in May 2026 and "Denpa-tic Imaginary Girl 'Q'" in April 2026).
- Collab packs: Muse Dash regularly collaborates with other games; 2026 has included UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE, maimai DX (a second collab), ONGEKI, Touhou, and Wuthering Waves.
Difficulties
Each song typically has Easy, Hard, and Master charts, each with a numeric difficulty rating. On some songs the Master chart has to be unlocked first (the song select screen shows the requirement), and many songs have an extra hidden chart on top.
Hidden sheets
Many songs have secret charts. Common unlock methods mentioned in official update notes:
- Tap the difficulty button repeatedly ("crazily", in the official wording) on the song select screen for songs flagged with hidden sheets.
- Long-press the song cover on certain songs.
- Special requirements for some collab songs (for example, the Touhou collab hints that you need to "poke the Gensokyo characters").
Recent examples from official update notes:
Song | Pack | How
Cryogenic | Default Music (September 2026) | Tap the difficulty button
Stra Stella | Default Music (February 2026) | Long-press the cover
Matsuyoi Nightbug | Touhou Mugakudan -V- | Tap the difficulty button
Death by Glamour / MEGALOVANIA | Song of Determination & Power | Hidden sheets; Death by Glamour's has a BOSS switch
雨露霜雪, World's end loneliness, 殿ッ!?ご乱心!? | maimai DX Limited Suite_Vol.02 | Tap the difficulty button
All six songs | DASH AND SHOOT! (ONGEKI) | Tap the difficulty button
Check each update post for which songs have hidden sheets and how to trigger them.
Setup for Accuracy
- Latency/offset: set it in Settings with the calibration tool. Test with a song you know well.
- Keybinds: bind at least two keys per lane. Common setups use keys on the left hand for air and right hand for ground, or split them so each hand can hit both.
- V-Sync and display: use a stable frame rate. Stutters ruin timing.
- Audio: wired headphones reduce latency compared with Bluetooth.
- Controller: works well; map lanes to shoulder buttons and face buttons.
Practice Plan
Stage | Goal | What to practice
Beginner | Clear Easy charts | Reading lanes; avoiding gears
Intermediate | FC Hard charts | Alternating hands on streams; holds and mashers
Advanced | Clear Master charts | Doubles, fast lane switches, ghosts
Expert | AP and hidden charts | Offset tuning, consistency, accuracy under pressure
Tips for each stage:
- Replay the same song until you know it. Muse Dash rewards pattern memory.
- Don't look at your character. Watch the incoming notes on the right half of the screen.
- Relax on mashers. Rapid presses with two fingers alternating beat one tense finger.
- Doubles: press air and ground together, not a split second apart.
Events and Updates (2026)
Muse Dash updates roughly monthly with new packs:

Late March 2026 | April Fools' "Ay-Aye Horse" concept pack (Umarija made by Ora 2), first two-player battle stage "Musepyoi Legend", Wuthering Waves collab "Wuthering Waves Pioneer Podcast" (free at Level 45)
April 2026 | ONGEKI collab "DASH AND SHOOT!"
May 2026 | "Touhou Mugakudan -V-"
June 2026 | 8th anniversary, Ghosts Marija
July 2026 | UNDERTALE × DELTARUNE collab "Song of Determination & Power"
August 2026 | maimai DX 2nd collab "maimai DX Limited Suite_Vol.02"
September 2026 | "Calling Card from R" (Phantom Thief Rin), "Slumbering Golden Mark"
Login rewards: many updates include a limited-time login illustration (for example, the Mid-Autumn Festival illustration by logging in before 4 October 2026). These are added to the level-up bonus later, so you don't lose them permanently.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Never calibrating latency.
- Using only one key per lane.
- Hitting gears because you mash both lanes.
- Jumping straight to Master.
- Ignoring character HP and passives.
- Buying individual packs when Muse Plus covers all of them.
Advanced Tips
- Hand splits: alternate hands for streams in the same lane.
- Double taps: time both lanes precisely; slightly early is better than slightly late on most offsets.
- Hold release timing: release at the end of the bar, not early.
- Score characters: for leaderboard runs, pick a character and Elfin with score-focused passives.
- Hidden sheets: they're often much harder than Master; practice the base Master first.
FAQ
Is Muse Dash free? The base game is paid on Steam with a set of default songs; Muse Plus is a DLC that unlocks everything else.
What does Muse Plus include? All paid music packs (around 500 songs according to the store), characters, Elfins, title screens, and illustrations, including future ones.
How do I unlock hidden charts? Usually by rapidly tapping the difficulty button or long-pressing the song cover on songs flagged in update notes.
What's the best character for beginners? One with high HP or a survival passive, so you can finish songs while learning.
Why am I getting Greats instead of Perfects? Your latency offset is likely off. Recalibrate in Settings.
Is there multiplayer? The first Two-player Battle Stage, "Musepyoi Legend", arrived in the April Fools' 2026 concept pack "Ay-Aye Horse"; the core game is single-player with online leaderboards.
What languages does it support? English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean, with full audio in each on Steam.
