A guide to Mitos.is (Mitosis), the free-to-play agar-style cell game by Freakinware Studios. It covers the core eat-or-be-eaten mechanics, splitting and viruses, game modes, equipment and the Laboratory, the Battlepass, events, and how to climb in tournaments.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 2, 2026 update (Tournament Resilience change, OGMITOSIS coupon). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Eat smaller, avoid bigger. You're a cell. Absorb pellets and smaller cells to grow, and stay away from anything bigger than you.
  • Splitting is your attack. Splitting throws half your mass forward at high speed. Use it to catch smaller cells, but your pieces are smaller and more vulnerable afterward.
  • Ejecting mass is a tool. Ejecting shrinks you slightly (to get away) and can feed teammates or bait enemies into viruses.
  • Viruses are shields and traps. Big cells that touch a virus get popped into many pieces. Small cells can hide behind viruses. Since January 2026 there are more viruses on every map.
  • Change the server if you lag. The developer's own tip: open Settings and switch your server location.
  • Do the daily stuff. Daily tournaments, Battlepass objectives, and event collectibles are how free players earn coins and gear.
  • Gear matters. Equipment adds stat bonuses (speed, rejoin, eat distance, and more), so a geared player behaves differently from a new one. Don't trade blows evenly with high-level players early on.
  • Join a guild. Guilds unlock Guild Wars tournaments and give you people to team with in Random Team and Capture the Flag.

Controls

Mitos.is uses the classic agar-style control scheme. You steer your cell toward the mouse cursor, and there are keys for splitting and ejecting mass. The game also has extra keys for devices and potions. Bindings can be checked and changed in Settings, so look there before your first serious match.

Action | What It Does

Move | Your cell follows the mouse

Split | Divides every cell big enough into two, launching half forward

Eject mass | Fires a small blob of your mass in the direction you're aiming

Use device/potion | Triggers equipped special items (e.g. Laboratory potions)

Core Mechanics

Mass, Speed, and Size

  • Bigger is slower. Large cells move slowly, and small cells are fast. That's the central trade-off.
  • Split for speed and reach. A split launch covers distance quickly, perfect for catching a smaller runner.
  • Merging back: After splitting, your pieces rejoin after a cooldown. Equipment with Rejoin attributes shortens it, and the rare Purple Virus grants instant rejoin.

Viruses

Virus | Effect

Standard (green) virus | A cell bigger than the virus that touches it is split into many pieces. Smaller cells can pass behind it for safety.

Purple Virus (very rare, added January 2026) | Gives +10,000 mass and an instant rejoin

Virus tactics:

  • Hide: Small cells can hide near viruses, because big hunters risk popping themselves.
  • Shoot viruses: In agar-style games, feeding enough ejected mass into a virus pushes a new virus out toward an enemy and pops them. Test it in a quiet lobby to learn how it works on current Mitos.is servers.
  • Bait: Lure a big cell across a virus field while you stay small.

Game Modes

Mode | What It Is | Tip

Free for All | Classic everyone-against-everyone | Farm pellets early, pick off small players, avoid the leaderboard leaders

Random Team | Random teams share a goal | Feed teammates with eject so one big cell can dominate

Battle Royale | A shrinking-zone elimination format | Stay near the center, grow safely, and avoid early fights

Capture the Flag | Team objective mode | Escort flag carriers and use splits to intercept

Guild Wars | Guild-vs-guild tournaments | Coordinate with guildmates

Other modes | The patch history also mentions 1v1, 2v2, Split Party, Territory Wars, Soccer, Human vs Zombie, and Crazy Mode | Availability rotates. Check the mode list in-game.

Private Rooms: The May 2026 update improved Private Rooms, making it easier to play with friends.

Equipment and Progression

Equipment gives stat bonuses. Categories include weapons, helmets, armor, boots, shields, and jewels, and newer slots add passive powers and gems.

Attribute | What It Helps

Rejoin | Faster merging after a split

Speed | Movement speed

Eat Distance | How close you need to be to absorb something

Eat Resistance | Harder to be eaten

Persistence | Durability-type bonuses

Size / Virus bonuses | Mass and virus interactions

Resilience | A defensive stat. Since September 2, 2026, tournaments apply a -5% Resilience penalty.

Item tiers: Items move up through evolution tiers. Official news confirms Sapphire, Legendary and Ultra evolutions (filling the Legendary Evolution bar unlocks the Ultra Evo), and event chests come as Sapphire, Ruby, Golden and Legendary. Item level decides how strong it is. A Gems slot (announced November 2023) adds upgradeable gems on top of normal gear. In November 2025, Freakinware rebalanced every Ultra item with buffs only, so none were weakened.

Event rarity windows: Limited items during events are sold for a short time: Common (permanent), Limited (24 hours), Super Limited (3 days), and Collector (7 days). After that, they're gone for good.

The Laboratory

The Laboratory is the crafting system. You put in resources and it produces items and potions.

  • Potions added in January 2026: Superior Gravity Blink, Superior Immunis Shield, and Superior Antiviral Portal Gun.
  • Triple crafts: Events regularly hand out "triple Laboratory crafts" for a few days as rewards. Save your crafting materials for those windows.
  • Also in Wormis and Mitosis OG: The May 2026 update added the Laboratory and a free Battlepass to Freakinware's other games too.

Battlepass

Track | What You Get

Free | Objective-based rewards with monthly-resetting goals

Premium | Exclusive equipment, animated skins, +50% coins, monthly emotes, and special event items (for example, a Special Limited Item until September 14, 2026, scaling with your Premium tier)

Premium also affects secondary usernames: since September 2026, unused secondary usernames may be released after 6 months without Premium, or 12 months with an active Premium Battlepass. Main usernames aren't affected.

Events Calendar (Recent)

Event | Dates | Highlights

Halloween | Oct 17 – Nov 9, 2025 | Pumpkin collecting, the Pumpkinfier, titles (Pumpkyn Lord, Cursed, Infernal, Phantom)

Xmas | Dec 19, 2025 – Jan 7, 2026 | Snowmen transformations, Freeze Device, Snowball Launcher, The Grinch title, Santa's Golden Bracelet 2025

Easter | Mar 24 – Apr 13, 2026 | Egg collecting, the Chocolizer, the I Luv Chocolate title, Crunchy Chocobar cooldown device

11th Birthday | May 28 – July 1, 2026 | Cake collecting, a jewel for 3,000 cakes, Limited Items across all Freakinware games, and the season ended July 1

OGMITOSIS coupon | Until Sept 14, 2026 | 5,000 coins per year since registration, plus OG 2015/2016/2017 titles for veterans

Event pattern: Collect the event item (pumpkins, candies, eggs, cakes) during matches. Low tiers (about 30 items) give a daily Sapphire Chest, higher tiers (about 150) give a daily Legendary Chest, and the top thresholds (thousands) give a powerful jewel or extra gear plus tripled Laboratory crafts. Log in daily during events.

Tournaments and Seasons

  • Daily tournaments pay coin prizes. They're one of the best coin sources for skilled players.
  • Rules: As of September 2, 2026, a -5% Resilience modifier applies in tournaments, and a bug that let players enter using more than 4 accounts was fixed. Multi-accounting is clearly being policed, so play tournaments on your own account only.
  • Seasons and rankings: Rankings reset periodically. Top players earn titles like "Master of Global" (temporary) and "Best of Season" (permanent), and monthly coin rewards have historically reached down to 1,000th place (a September 2023 table ran from 45,000 coins for 1st to 600 coins for 101st–1,000th). Check the current season post for today's amounts.
  • Rewarded modes rotate by season. Past seasons have rewarded rankings in modes such as Free For All, 1v1, 2v2, Split Party, Guild Tournaments, Human vs Zombie, Soccer, Battle Royale and Capture the Flag, so read each season announcement to see where the coins are.

Surviving Your First Matches

  • Spend the first minute on pellets. Early mass comes from food, not players. Stay away from the leaderboard names until you're big enough to split on someone.
  • Keep one escape route open. Before you commit to a hunt, know where the nearest virus cluster or open space is. Getting cornered against the map edge is how most small cells die.
  • Only split when the target can't dodge. Targets moving toward you, pinned on an edge, or trapped against a virus are safe splits. A target moving away at full speed usually isn't.
  • Watch for the double-team. In FFA, two medium players often hunt together. If two cells are shadowing you, leave the area.
  • Don't feed strangers. Ejecting mass toward an unknown player in FFA just makes a bigger enemy.
  • Try Private Rooms to practise. Split distance and virus-shooting are much easier to learn with a friend in a private room than in a live lobby.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Splitting near bigger players. Your pieces become snacks for anyone bigger than each piece.
  • Hunting near viruses while big. One touch pops you into pieces.
  • Chasing across the map. Bigger means slower. Long chases rarely pay off.
  • Ignoring your server location. High ping makes splits miss. Pick the nearest server.
  • Spending coins on cosmetics first. Early coins do more in equipment that improves your stats.
  • Missing event deadlines. Limited items and coupons like OGMITOSIS expire for good.

Advanced Tips

  • Split-kill range: Learn exactly how far your split travels. Kill attempts from just out of range get you eaten when your pieces land.
  • Double-split with care: Chained splits reach much farther but leave you in tiny pieces.
  • Team feeding: In team modes, ejecting mass into one teammate makes a single dominant cell that can control the map.
  • Virus shooting: Aim ejected mass into a virus to push a new one into a camping enemy.
  • Gear for your mode: Speed and Eat Distance for FFA hunting, Rejoin for aggressive splitting, and defensive stats for survival in Battle Royale.
  • Watch the leaderboard: It tells you who to avoid, and a sudden drop in a top player's mass means someone just got eaten nearby.

FAQ

Is Mitos.is free? Yes. It's free-to-play on Steam, in the browser, on Android, and on iOS. Coins, Battlepass Premium, and coin packs are optional purchases.

How do I reduce lag? Open the Settings menu and change your server location to one closer to you.
