A guide to Minimalism, PixelMouse's tiny cube platformer: how its key-and-door maze works, how to survive the spike-heavy later levels, and a clear plan for all 165 Steam achievements (including the letter and kana collectibles people use to decorate their profiles).

Researched September 2026. Current as of the last developer update (controller support, 20 March 2017). The game hasn't changed since. Check the linked sources if something differs.

What Minimalism Is

Minimalism (PixelMouse, released 8 February 2017) is a very cheap, very small platformer. You play a cube. The world is a labyrinth of levels, and you move between them by opening doors with keys you collect. There are 30 levels of increasing difficulty, minimalist visuals and a soundtrack. It costs around the price of a snack (check the store page for your region's price) and is often bundled.

Its Steam reviews are Mixed overall (about 63% positive of roughly 685 reviews), though recent reviews run more positive. The two recurring complaints are floaty controls and unforgiving spike hitboxes. Most people who own it are here for the 165 achievements.

Quick Start

  • Keys open doors. Each door in the maze needs keys, so collect every key you see before moving on.
  • Spikes are the enemy. Players widely report the spike hitboxes are larger and more rectangular than the art suggests. Leave extra margin.
  • Movement is slippery. Make small taps rather than holding a direction when you're lining up a jump near spikes.
  • Levels get harder in order. 1 to 10 are gentle, while the 20s demand precision. Expect retries.
  • Achievements unlock as you go. Starting the game, starting level 1 and finishing each level all pop achievements.
  • Collect every letter and character. 26 Latin letters (A to Z) and a large set of Japanese kana are individual achievements, and "Trapper letters" needs them all.
  • Controller supported. Controller support was added in a 20 March 2017 update. Many players find a d-pad more precise than keys.
  • Take breaks. The later levels are notorious in reviews for being frustrating. Fresh hands help with precision platforming.

Core Mechanics

The maze and keys

The game is built as one connected maze. Levels are "rooms," and doors between them are locked until you have collected enough keys. This means:

  • Sweep each level for keys before looking for the exit.
  • If you're stuck at a door, you've missed a key somewhere, so backtrack.
  • The final level is gated behind progress. Community guides exist specifically for "how to open the last level," which tells you it's easy to miss what's needed. Go back through earlier levels for anything you skipped.

Hazards

  • Spikes: instant failure on contact. Hitboxes are generous in the spikes' favour.
  • Precision jumps over gaps and between spike rows make up most of the later challenge.

Controls

The game uses simple move and jump controls on keyboard or controller. Check the options menu for the exact bindings on your setup. If keyboard movement feels imprecise, try a controller.

Level Progression

Levels | What to expect | Tip

1 to 5 | Learn movement, keys and doors | Explore fully and get used to the jump

6 to 15 | More spikes, longer rooms | Practise short hops near spikes

16 to 25 | Precision platforming | Slow down and learn each jump

26 to 30 | Hardest rooms | Expect retries. Take breaks

The achievement data backs this up: about 20% of players finish level 1, 12% level 5, 10% level 15, and about 8% reach level 30. The curve flattens near the end, so most players who reach the 20s go on to finish.

For the completionist achievements, Comprehending Zen (all levels) sits around 5% and Trapper letters (every letter and character) just behind it, so the collectibles add only a small extra step once you've beaten all 30 levels. Figures are from Steam's global achievement stats and drift over time.

Achievements: 165 Total

Breakdown

Group | Count | How to unlock

Play | 1 | Start the game

This is just the beginning | 1 | Start the first level

Level 1 completed to Level 30 completed | 30 | Finish each level

Comprehending Zen | 1 | Complete all levels

Latin letters (A to Z) | 26 | "You picked up the letter X"

Japanese kana (あ, い, う, and so on, including combos like きゃ, しゅ, ちょ) | 105 | "You picked the character X"

Trapper letters | 1 | Collect all the letters and characters

How to plan 100%

  • Play through normally. Finish the levels in order, and the level achievements unlock one by one.
  • Collect letters and characters as you go. They're individual achievements, so each one you find pops immediately.
  • Watch for the hidden letter. The most popular community guide for the game is titled "Hidden letter location," and another is "Location of hidden letter." At least one letter is well hidden. If you finish with 25 of 26 Latin letters, check those guides.
  • Finish all 30 levels for Comprehending Zen.
  • Trapper letters comes last, once every letter and character is collected.

The "profile showcase" angle

Each letter and kana achievement has its own character icon, which makes Minimalism a popular pick for profile decoration. With Steam's Achievement Showcase, you can arrange unlocked achievements to spell a word or name on your profile. Steam Community guides for the game show off names and phrases spelled in kana this way. If that's your goal:

  • Plan which letters or kana you need.
  • Collect them, then arrange the showcase in your profile settings.
  • Community guides like "BEST LOOKING LETTER ACHIEVEMENTS" show layouts.

A note on achievement unlockers

Some community guides point to third-party achievement unlocking tools. These violate the spirit of achievements and some communities frown on them. Unlocking legitimately is the safe choice for your account's reputation.

Performance and Compatibility

  • Runs on basically any Windows PC. Minimum spec is Windows 7, a 1 GHz CPU and 2 GB of RAM. Note that the Steam client itself requires Windows 10 or later since January 2024.
  • The store lists a long run of supported languages, which matters little since the game has almost no text.
  • Family Sharing, trading cards and Points Shop items are available.

Troubleshooting

Problem | Try this

An achievement didn't unlock | Make sure Steam is online (not Offline Mode), then repeat the action. Achievements sync when Steam is connected

Controller not detected | Enable Steam Input for the game (Properties, Controller) or turn it off if double inputs occur

Game window too small or blurry | Check the in-game options for resolution and fullscreen, or toggle fullscreen with Alt+Enter

Input feels delayed | Close overlays and recording software, and play fullscreen

Stuck at a locked door | You're missing keys. Backtrack through earlier rooms

A Practice Routine for the Hard Levels

Precision platformers reward deliberate practice more than raw attempts:

  • Break the room into segments. Identify each jump or spike gap as its own mini-challenge.
  • Find your "start marker." Line the cube up against the same edge or tile before each hard jump so your timing is consistent.
  • Count the rhythm. Many sequences are a fixed rhythm of taps. Saying it out loud helps.
  • Stop after five failures in a row at the same spot and look at what you're doing differently. It's usually jumping too early.
  • Quit on a success. Ending a session on a cleared segment makes the next session start better.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hugging spikes. Give them a full cube's width of clearance.
  • Holding the direction key. Tap to fine-tune position before jumping.
  • Skipping collectibles "to come back later," then having to replay hard rooms.
  • Rushing the later levels. Learn each room.
  • Assuming a door is bugged. You're missing a key.
  • Playing tilted. Short sessions are more productive.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn the jump arc in an early, safe level and practise the same timing later.
  • Use a controller if keyboard feels imprecise.
  • Count keys for each door as you go.
  • Route collectibles: grab letters on the same pass as keys to avoid backtracking through hard sections.
  • Record your run if you're stuck finding a collectible. Reviewing footage often reveals missed paths.
