A practical guide to Avalanche Studios' 2015 open-world Mad Max: upgrading the Magnum Opus, surviving car and fist fights, clearing territory, running strongholds, and finishing the story without grinding yourself to dust.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 4 (October 2015, the last content patch) and the Mac/Linux release (October 2016). Online features were retired on October 31, 2020. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: Mad Max is still sold and fully playable offline on Steam. The retirement of online features in 2020 only affected the old WB Play/online rewards layer, not the campaign.

Quick Start

  • Scrap is the main currency. Collect it everywhere (wrecks, camps, crates, scarecrow wrecks, convoys). You'll spend it on the Magnum Opus and Max.
  • Upgrade the Magnum Opus early and often. Armor, ramming grill, and engine let you survive the vehicle war.
  • Chumbucket repairs the car. When he's in the car, he fixes damage while you drive; on foot, he repairs when you stop near him.
  • Reduce Threat in every region. Threat level drops as you clear camps, scarecrows, snipers, minefields, and convoys. Lower threat means more Project parts and fewer ambushes.
  • Unlock and use the Harpoon. It rips doors, tires, drivers, and tower supports off vehicles and structures.
  • Climb balloons. Hot-air balloons reveal points of interest on the map, the same way towers work in other open-world games.
  • Use the Scrap Crew stronghold project as early as possible; it collects scrap for you while you're away.
  • Food and water heal Max. Water canteen refills at water sources; eat maggots/dog food/tins in the world.
  • Save your shotgun shells. Ammo is scarce early. Use them for emergencies, Top Dogs, and pulling off armored parts.
  • Keep the dog buggy handy. Dinki-Di finds land mines, which you'll need for mine clearance.

The World and Story Setup

Max, beaten and stripped of his car by Scabrous Scrotus (son of Immortan Joe), wants to reach the Plains of Silence. He teams up with Chumbucket, a hunchbacked mechanic who builds him a new car, the Magnum Opus. To get parts, Max helps the stronghold leaders fighting Scrotus's forces:

Stronghold | Leader | Setting

Jeet's Stronghold | Jeet | Lighthouse stronghold

Gutgash's Stronghold | Gutgash (Gut Gash) | Stronghold built around an old oil tanker

Pink Eye's Stronghold | Pink Eye | Silo base; skilled mechanic whose home you defend from Stank Gum

Deep Friah's Stronghold | Deep Friah | Temple of a friendly fire-worshipping cult; a later-game ally

Story beats (light spoilers)

Stage | What happens | Player takeaway

Opening | Scrotus strips Max of his car and leaves him for dead; Chumbucket starts building the Magnum Opus | The first hours double as a tutorial for scrap, upgrades and the harpoon

Jeet's territory | Helping Jeet and reclaiming his stronghold | Clear threat here to start stronghold projects rolling

Gastown race | Max wins a V8 engine in a Gastown race and meets Hope | A big engine upgrade for the Opus

Mid-game | After a confrontation with Scrotus, Max is patched up by the Organic Mechanic, then rescues Hope's daughter Glory from Buzzard territory | Buzzard areas are among the most hostile in the game; upgrade armor first

Finale | Scrotus strikes back at Max's allies; Max chases him across the Purgatory Flatlands for the final fight | Finish any side content you care about before the final missions

After the credits you can keep roaming to finish camps, convoys and other activities.

Controls (PC Defaults)

The game has Steam Controller and pad support, and mouse/keyboard controls received several fixes through patches. Check Settings, Controls for exact bindings; key actions you'll be using constantly:

Action | Notes

Attack / counter | Free-flow combat like the Batman Arkham games; counter when the prompt shows

Shotgun | Limited ammo; high damage

Harpoon (in car) | Pull doors, tires, drivers, snipers, tower supports

Boost | Nitro burst for ramming

Swap camera | Shooting from the car in slow motion (shotgun)

Binoculars | Scout camps and targets

Patch 3 (September 28, 2015) added an optional "Vehicle Roll" setting for more realistic in-air car physics plus mouse and keyboard fixes; Patch 4 (October 26, 2015) added Steam Controller support and fixed stronghold-project and map issues.

Fuel matters. The Magnum Opus burns gasoline. Top up whenever you find fuel, and don't strand yourself deep in hostile territory on an empty tank.

The Magnum Opus

Upgrades cost scrap and some need project parts or story progress. Upgrades interact: heavier armor makes the car tougher but slower; bigger engines add speed but some handling costs.

Category | What it does | Priority

Engine | Speed and ramming power | High — you need to outrun and ram convoys

Armor | Damage resistance | High early

Ramming grill | Ram damage | High

Tires | Grip and off-road | Medium

Suspension | Handling | Medium

Exhaust | Boost | Medium

Boarder spikes | Deter War Boys trying to board | High vs frequent boarders

Body/shell and paint | Cosmetics plus some bonuses | Low

Harpoon and Thunderpoon | Harpoon utility, explosive harpoon | High

Tips

  • Balance armor and engine. A slow tank dies to convoys; a fast glass cannon dies to ramming.
  • The Thunderpoon (explosive harpoon) destroys enemy cars and structures from range. Its ammo is limited but refillable.
  • Boarder spikes stop War Boys from jumping onto your car.
  • Archangel vehicles (special cars) can be collected and used from garages.

On-Foot Combat

The on-foot combat works like the Batman Arkham games: chain hits, counter on the prompt, and dodge heavy attacks.

  • Build your combo. A high combo enters Fury mode, which boosts damage.
  • Counter everything you can. Timing counters is the key skill.
  • Use shivs to finish enemies or break guard.
  • Shotgun for Top Dogs and emergencies; ammo is limited.
  • Thunderstick (explosive lance) is a finisher for big enemies.
  • Use the environment: explosive barrels, drops, doors.

Top Dogs are camp bosses. Learn their patterns; many need dodges before openings. Upgrading Max's armor and health first makes them much easier.

Territory: How to Lower Threat

Each region has a Threat level. Clearing its activities lowers it:

Activity | How to do it

Camps | Enemy bases; complete objectives (destroy oil tanks, kill Top Dog)

Scarecrows | Tall structures; pull down with the harpoon

Snipers | Snipers on towers; take out with harpoon or shotgun

Minefields | Use the dog buggy to find mines; defuse on foot

Convoys | Moving groups of cars; destroy the leader vehicle for a hood ornament

Balloons | Reveal map points

As Threat drops, the region's stronghold projects become available and shops improve.

Strongholds and Projects

Each stronghold has projects built with project parts found in the wasteland. Projects include:

  • Scrap Crew: collects scrap passively while you roam (build early)
  • Supply projects: restock things like water, fuel, food/health and ammo when you visit the stronghold (the exact list differs per stronghold; check each project's description)

Projects stack across strongholds, so a full set everywhere makes resupply trivial.

Griffa and Max's Upgrades

Griffa is a mystic wanderer who upgrades Max using Griffa tokens, earned by raising Max's Legend rank through challenges. Griffa's upgrades are passive boosts to Max's survival, combat and scavenging (for example, getting more out of scrap and supplies). Visit him whenever you have unspent tokens; he appears at various spots in the wasteland.

Max's gear (bought with scrap) includes:

  • Jacket/armor
  • Knuckle weapons
  • Shotgun upgrades and ammo capacity
  • Shivs
  • Appearance cosmetics
  • Early game (first region): Engine and armor upgrades, Harpoon, Scrap Crew project.
  • Clear Jeet's territory: scarecrows and camps first for Threat reduction and scrap.
  • Unlock Thunderpoon and boarder spikes before tackling convoys.
  • Gutgash and Pink Eye regions: upgrade engine further; take on Top Dogs with upgraded armor.
  • Before Gastown: finish enough Threat reduction to get useful projects; upgrade the car fully.
  • Endgame: clear remaining camps, convoys and races for 100% if you want it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Grinding every activity in one region first. It gets repetitive; move on and come back.
  • Neglecting Scrap Crew. It's free money.
  • Skipping armor on the car. Convoys and War Boys will tear you apart.
  • Wasting shotgun shells on regular enemies.
  • Ignoring Chumbucket's repairs. Drive with him in the car during fights.
  • Not using the dog buggy for minefields. On foot, you'll just explode.

Advanced Tips

  • Harpoon snipers off towers from the car before approaching camps.
  • Thunderpoon the camp's gates and oil tanks from range to soften defenses.
  • Ram with boost, not just speed: boosted rams deal much more damage.
  • Use convoy hood ornaments as car upgrades; convoy leaders drop them.
  • Races and Death Runs unlock special vehicles; good for completionists.
  • Max's Legend ranks come from challenges; check them to earn Griffa tokens faster.

FAQ

Is Mad Max still playable? Yes. It's a single-player game; online features were retired in 2020, but the campaign is unaffected.

Do I need to watch Fury Road first? No. The game has its own story about Max and Scrotus, set in the same world.

How long is it? The main story is moderate length; 100% completion takes much longer due to the many camps and activities.

What's the best early upgrade? Engine and armor for the Magnum Opus, plus the Scrap Crew project.
