This guide covers Hydroneer from your first shovel of dirt to automated mines. It explains the money loop, hydro power and logic, which dig sites and vehicles to buy in what order, the guild and Forge Mark systems, and the Journey to Volcalidus DLC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the May 2026 "Mega-Optimization" PC update (post-3.0.9; the game is feature-complete, and console versions launched 8 May 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Game Status in 2026
Foulball Hangover finished Hydroneer in April 2024, when it released the Journey to Volcalidus DLC (Steam, 5 April 2024). Since then the updates have been fixes and optimisation:
- 3.0.8 (June 2024): Logic Content Reader improvements, hold-to-use Sickle, save dates in the file browser, and diamonds and diamond jewellery added to Volcalidus villager requests.
- 3.0.9 (March 2025): A save-corruption guard. If a save is about to be corrupted, the game now crashes with an error instead, so you can load the previous autosave.
- Mega-Optimization (8 May 2026): Performance improvements, especially for large mining setups, plus localisation fixes. It came from the console port work with PlayEveryWare.
- Consoles: Hydroneer and the DLC launched on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 on 8 May 2026 at the same prices as on PC ($15 base, $10 DLC).
The studio is now working on its next game, Die Trying, so don't expect new Hydroneer content. The game itself is complete.
Quick Start
- Finish the tutorial. It teaches digging, panning, smelting and selling, and it pays the Tutorial Complete! achievement.
- Your first money is dirt plus water. Dig paydirt, process it in water to find ore, smelt the ore into bars, and sell at the jeweller in Bridgepour (My First Hydrocoin).
- Fishing is a great safety net. Early on, fishing makes steady HydroCoins with almost no setup. Upgrading your rod over time gets you Master Fisherman.
- Cut gems by hand before you automate. Hand-cut gems sell much better than uncut ones (Dirty Rock Go Gzz Now Sparkle).
- Power everything with water. Pumps push water through pipes to run machines. Plan your pipe routes before you build, because rerouting later is painful.
- Buy a dig site that fits your plan. Each site has different depth, water and distance to shops. Water access matters most early on.
- Use villager requests for tokens. Weapon, soup and other requests earn guild tokens and cash, and they keep your economy varied.
- Save often, in multiple slots. The 3.0.9 fix stopped most corruption, but a manual backup is still smart.
The Core Loop
Step | What you do | Upgrade path
Dig | Shovel or pickaxe dirt and rock | Drills that produce dirt automatically (A Dirty Job is 1,000 dirt from drills)
Process | Wash dirt in water to find ore and gems | Harvesters (It's Harvesting Season is processing 1,000 dirt)
Refine | Smelt ore into bars, and cut gems | Bigger smelting setups and logic compressors for gems
Craft | Make jewellery, weapons and other items for more value | Forge work, and the Masterwork anvil in Icehelm
Sell | Jeweller, shops, stock market and villager requests | Selling on the stock market (Wolf of Bridgepour, Stonks)
Rule of thumb: every refinement step adds value. Raw ore is worth the least, bars more, and crafted jewellery or requested weapons the most. Automate one step at a time, starting with the most tedious one, which is usually digging or washing.
Hydro Power and Pipes
- Pumps in water supply your network. Pipes carry water, and machines (drills, harvesters, the Ice Melter and so on) use it.
- Pressure matters. Long pipe runs and too many machines on one network drain pressure. Split big setups across more pumps.
- Pressure tanks store water and can hold shard bars. The Logic Content Reader can read their total weight after 3.0.8.
- Keep pipes tidy. Label or colour-code networks and leave walkways. Many bases fail because a pipe blocks the path to a machine you need to reach.
Logic
Logic parts let you automate and control your base. Examples:
- Logic Content Reader: reads what's inside containers. Since 3.0.8 it can read pressure tank contents and Logic Spanner Hurling Unit uses.
- Logic compressor: compresses gems (Logical Compression is 100 gems).
- Logic TNT barrel and logic mini nuke: blasting for big digs (Fire In The Hole!, Nuclear Miner). Mini nukes also work at the Icehelm dig site since 3.0.7.
- Logic destroyer: deletes junk items (Feeling Wasted is 5,000 items).
- Hand Sorters: split items onto different belts or paths.
Start small. Put a sorter after your harvester so gems and ore go to different places, and build up from there.
Dig Sites and Areas
Buying land (A New Home) gives you new dig sites. Some of the named sites, as they appear in achievements:
Dig Site | Notes
South Hope | One of the earlier purchasable sites
Dreck Quarry | Quarry site
Mildews Aquifer | Check water access before you commit
Waterside | Near the water, which makes hydro builds simpler
Snow Rune Falls | Snowy site
Icehelm | Deep site linked to the Masterwork anvil, the item chute and the Ice Melter
Lumberton Bluff, Scoria Chamber, Cinder Footing, Shattered Breach | Later sites. The lava-themed ones belong to the Volcalidus region
Before you buy, visit each site and check depth, water and the distance to shops.
Other places worth knowing:
- Bridgepour: the starting town, with the jeweller and the stock market.
- New Glade: a town you can fully restore (Good as New (Glade)) and even build a store in (Franchisee).
- The museum: donate bones you dig up (Archaeology, Indiana Bones, Bonafide Bone Finder).
- The scrapyard: turns junk into value ("one mans trash is another mans hot trash", and "scraaaaaaaaap" for 100 items).
- Abandoned miners: rebuild them for passive income (Restoration, Passive Income, Fully Loaded).
- Mot's Island: a lap course. Complete a lap, and try for under 1:11 for SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.
Vehicles
Vehicle | Role
Hydro Truck | Transport
Hydro Quad | Quick personal transport with a storage zone
Hydro Roller | Utility vehicle. Read the shop description for its job
Hydro Mole | Digging
Hydro Prospector | Prospecting for ore
Hydro Cropper | Farming
Lava Hauler, Lava Bike, Lava Thaw | Volcalidus-era vehicles
The store describes the hydro-powered vehicles as big machines for digging resources, finding ore veins and hauling goods.
The 3.0.7 patch fixed coin duplication when buying vehicles and adjusted the New Glade vehicle recall point. If a vehicle gets stuck, use the recall point.
Farming, Cooking and Requests
- Crops: Plant and harvest vegetables (Sowing The Seeds, Green Thumb). The Sickle can be held down to harvest faster since 3.0.8.
- Soup: Cook soup (Soup Kitchen) and deliver soup requests to villagers (Chef).
- Weapons: Fulfil weapon requests (Quartermaster).
- Guild tokens: Prospect, farming and scout guild tokens come from their activities and requests. Each has an achievement for 10,000.
Requests are a great way to use surplus bars and gems without flooding one market.
Forge Marks and Masterwork
In the later game you refine Forge Marks (Oh hi Mark) and use them to buff items. The buffs are random: you can roll a 3-star buff (Lucky Roll) or a negative one (Unlucky Roll). The Masterwork anvil in Icehelm produces high-end crafted items (Masterworkin'). Since 3.0.7, Forge Marks put into the Volcalidus masterwork forge are saved properly.
Journey to Volcalidus (DLC)
Released 5 April 2024. It adds the volcanic Volcalidus region with new dig sites, lava vehicles, a masterwork forge that works with Forge Marks, and its own villager requests (diamonds and diamond jewellery were added to them in 3.0.8). Relics you uncover with the HydroThaw are another late-game reward. It's the last big content drop and is worth it once you've outgrown the base game's sites.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Automating before you have income. Machines are expensive. Fish, pan, and hand-cut gems first, then buy your first drill and harvester.
- One giant pipe network. Pressure drops and everything slows. Use several pumps and separate networks.
- Selling everything raw. Refining and crafting multiply your profit.
- Blocking walkways with pipes and conveyors. Leave space to walk and to swap machines.
- Not backing up saves. Some antivirus tools used to interfere with saving. Keep manual copies anyway.
- Ignoring requests. They're the best use of surplus and the only source of guild tokens.
Advanced Tips
- Sort early. A sorter right after the harvester keeps gems out of your smelter and saves a lot of manual work.
- Use the stock market for big sales once your output is high. Watch prices before dumping everything.
- Build vertically. Stacked platforms save space on small dig sites.
- Blast, then drill. Logic TNT or mini nukes open huge cavities fast. Then park drills on the fresh faces.
- Play co-op. Hydroneer supports multiplayer. Split the roles, with one player on automation and one on requests and farming.
- Mods: Hydroneer has official mod support with an in-game uploader, which got quality-of-life improvements in 3.0.8. Back up saves before using mods.
FAQ
Is Hydroneer finished? Yes. The developers finished it in April 2024 with the Volcalidus DLC. Later patches (3.0.8, 3.0.9 and the May 2026 optimisation) are fixes and performance work.
Is it on console? Yes. It launched on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 on 8 May 2026, at the same prices as on Steam.
How do I make money fast early? Fishing, panning and hand-cutting gems, then selling at the jeweller. Automate once you can afford a drill and a harvester.
My save won't load. What now? Since 3.0.9, the game crashes on purpose instead of writing a corrupted save. Load the previous autosave.
What's the best dig site? It depends. Water access is king for hydro setups, so a riverside site makes the early game easy. Deep or special sites like Icehelm are better later.
Is the DLC worth it? If you enjoyed the base game's late game, yes. It adds a whole new region, vehicles and forging depth.
