A complete guide to Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen on PC: vocations and stat growth, the Pawn system, climbing and monster weak points, travel and money, main-story progression and missables, the post-game, and a Bitterblack Isle primer.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (Dark Arisen, launched on PC on 15 January 2016). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Series note: Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, the expansion for the sequel, launches on 9 October 2026. This guide is about the original 2012 game and its 2013 Dark Arisen expansion, which is fully included in this Steam release along with all earlier DLC.
Quick Start
- Your Main Pawn is your most important companion. You create them early and they stay with you all game. Two more "support" Pawns are hired from other players via Rift Stones.
- Night is dangerous. Keep your Lantern lit and carry Lantern Oil. Stronger monsters come out after dark, and some quests need night.
- Travel is slow on purpose. Ferrystones teleport you to Gran Soren or to a Portcrystal. Put down your Portcrystals in places you'll visit often.
- Climb big monsters. Grab onto Cyclopes, Griffins, Chimeras and Drakes and hit their weak points. Staying on uses stamina, so watch the bar.
- Vocations change how you play and your stats. Your stats grow each level according to your vocation at the time, so plan which vocation you level in.
- Get Wakestones. Three Wakestone Shards make a Wakestone, which revives the dead. Keep one for boss fights.
- Do side quests at each story stage. Some become unavailable as the main story moves on. Check the quest list before advancing big story beats.
- Leave Bitterblack Isle until later. You reach it by talking to Olra on the Cassardis pier at night. Capcom recommends finishing the story first or being at least level 50.
- Don't sell your gold-rimmed items early. Some rare drops are hard to get again. Check what upgrades need before selling.
Vocations
Overview
Tier | Vocation | Role | Pawns can use it?
Basic | Fighter | Sword and shield melee | Yes
Basic | Strider | Daggers and bow; agile climber | Yes
Basic | Mage | Staff; healing and support magick | Yes
Advanced | Warrior | Two-handed weapons; heavy hits | Yes
Advanced | Ranger | Longbow and daggers; ranged damage | Yes
Advanced | Sorcerer | Archistaff; big damage magick | Yes
Hybrid | Mystic Knight | Magick shield and sword; counters | No (Arisen only)
Hybrid | Assassin | Stealth and burst damage | No (Arisen only)
Hybrid | Magick Archer | Magick bow; homing shots | No (Arisen only)
You change vocations at the Pawn Guild in Gran Soren once it's available. Discipline (DCP) earned in combat unlocks skills and augments, which are passive bonuses that keep working across vocations.
Stat growth rules of thumb
- Physical builds (Fighter, Warrior, Assassin): level mostly as Fighter or Warrior for Strength and HP.
- Magick builds (Mage, Sorcerer, Magick Archer): level mostly as Sorcerer or Mage for Magick.
- Hybrids (Mystic Knight, Magick Archer): the hybrid vocations give balanced growth.
- Don't panic about stats. The effect of vocation-based growth is noticeable but not game-breaking. Play what's fun, and pick your leveling vocation deliberately if you care about optimising.
Augments worth getting early
- Vehemence (Fighter): Strength +10%.
- Clout (Warrior): Strength +20%.
- Arm-Strength (Strider): halves the Stamina used while clinging to and climbing monsters or terrain. Excellent for any climber.
- Leg-Strength (Strider): counts you one weight rank lighter for movement.
- Grit (Strider): halves the recovery time when you run out of Stamina.
- Magick-boosting augments from Mage and Sorcerer: for magick builds.
The Pawn System
- Main Pawn: created by you and leveled with you. Their vocation is limited to basic and advanced vocations.
- Support Pawns: hired from other players' worlds at Rift Stones using Rift Crystals (RC). Pawns at or below your level are cheap. Higher-level ones cost more RC.
- Knowledge: Pawns learn enemy weaknesses and quest routes by fighting and exploring. A Pawn with "Wyrmslayer" knowledge is a big help against dragons.
- Inclinations: tendencies such as Scather (attack the strongest), Medicant (healing), Mitigator (finish weak enemies), Challenger (take on big foes), Utilitarian (use special skills), Guardian (protect the Arisen), Nexus (stick with the party), Pioneer (explore ahead) and Acquisitor (collect items). Your Main Pawn's behavior is shaped by your commands and by special elixirs that adjust inclinations.
- Tip: a party of Mage (healing) + Fighter or Warrior (front line) + Ranger or Strider (ranged) with you in a hybrid vocation is a strong all-purpose party.
Combat and Monster Weak Points
Monster | Weak point / tactic
Cyclops | Eye; climb up and hit it. Armoured Cyclopes have breakable armor
Chimera | Kill the snake tail first (it can revive), then the goat (casts magick), then the lion
Griffin | Burn its wings to ground it; climb and stab
Hydra / Archydra | Cut off heads; stop regeneration with fire or damage
Golem | Break the glowing medallions on its body
Drakes / Wyrms | Hit the heart area; use the element opposite to theirs
Ogres | Don't let them grab you; flank and hit the head
Undead | Holy enchantments and fire
Useful tactics
- Enchantments: Mages can enchant weapons with Fire, Ice, Lightning or Holy. Match the enemy's weakness.
- Throwing: grab and throw small enemies off cliffs.
- Stamina: a heavy loadout drains stamina faster. Manage your weight class.
- Healing: a Mage Pawn's Anodyne heals the whole party. Carry Panaceas and other cures for status effects, and stock healing herbs for emergencies.
Travel, Money and Upgrades
- Ferrystones teleport you to Gran Soren or any Portcrystal. The reusable Eternal Ferrystone was a bonus for Dark Arisen owners (Fextralife lists it as a bonus for carrying over data from the original game). If you have one, it's usually waiting in your Storage at inns. If you don't, ordinary Ferrystones are sold in Gran Soren.
- Portcrystals: a few can be placed anywhere. Good spots include near Bluemoon Tower, Witchwood and the Greatwall.
- Money early: sell unused gear and loot, do the Notice Board quests in Gran Soren, and avoid buying gear you'll replace soon.
- Enhancement: gear is upgraded at Caxton's shop in Gran Soren and other enhancement vendors, using gold and materials. Dragonforged gear only comes from being exposed to the Dragon's breath (Grigori or the Ur-Dragon).
- Rift Crystals are earned when other players hire your Pawn and from gifts. Spend them on support Pawns and Rift Stone services.
Story Progression and Missables
The main story advances through stages, and some side quests close as you move through them. Stage names below are the community's convention (Fextralife and similar wikis).
Stage | Key events
Stage 1 | The Dragon attacks Cassardis, then Gran Soren and the Encampment, up to "Off With Its Head" (the Hydra)
Stage 2 | "A Matter of Myrmidons", "Lure of the Abyss" and your first Wyrm Hunt quest
Stage 3 | Wyrm Hunt quests: "The Cypher", "A Fortress Besieged", "Seeking Salvation", "The Watergod's Altar", "Come to Court". No side quests, so finish any open ones first
Stage 4–5 | Royal Orders from the Duke: "Griffin's Bane", "Trial and Tribulations", then "The Wyrmking's Ring", "Pride Before a Fall", "Honor and Treachery", "Reward and Responsibility"
Stage 6 | "Deny Salvation" and "The Final Battle" against the Dragon
Post-game | "A Warm Welcome", "Fathom Deep", "Final Judgement" and "The Great Hereafter": the Everfall, the Seneschal, and a changed Gransys
Missable rule: before each main story quest that advances a stage, check which side quests are still open. Wikis list them per stage.
The Post-Game
- The Everfall: a deep dungeon with the game's toughest regular enemies and the path to the final encounter.
- The Seneschal: the true final fight. Bring your best gear.
- New Game+: carry over your level, gear and Pawn into a fresh playthrough. Dark Arisen also includes Hard Mode, which makes enemies much more dangerous.
- The Ur-Dragon: an online community boss fought at the Rift. Its health is shared across players. Check whether it's reachable online in your region, as it depends on Capcom's service.
Bitterblack Isle Primer
- Access: talk to Olra on the Cassardis pier at night.
- Recommended level: at least 50, ideally after the main story.
- Unappraised gear: Bitterblack loot drops unappraised and is revealed later. It's where many of the best weapons and armor come from.
- Rarifying: Barroch offers Rarifying, a way to push Dragonforged items beyond their normal level using items and Rift Crystals.
- Death: a Reaper-like enemy that stalks certain areas and can kill you almost instantly. Run until your gear can handle it.
- Daimon: the final boss at the bottom of the island. He's an Arisen from ages ago who refused the Dragon's choice. Bring curatives and Wakestones.
- Farming loop: BBI respawns and re-rolls loot after you clear it, which is why it's the endgame gear farm.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Heading into the wilds at night with no Lantern Oil.
- Carrying too much. You'll be slow and burn through stamina.
- Ignoring your Main Pawn's gear. Pawns scale with their equipment, so upgrade them like you would your own.
- Advancing the story without checking side quests. Some close forever for that playthrough.
- Entering Bitterblack Isle too early. Everything hurts and nothing drops that you can use yet.
- Forgetting Wakestones. They save a ton of time in boss fights.
Advanced Tips
- Magick Archer's Ricochet Hunter is famous for chewing through BBI enemies in enclosed rooms.
- Assassin with Strength augments (Vehemence, Clout) plus Arm-Strength for climbing gives a very strong solo-ish playstyle.
- Mystic Knight's Great Cannon and magick shield counters are strong against bosses.
- Pawn knowledge: swap in hired Pawns who already know your current quest. They'll guide you.
- Use enchantments on everyone. A Mage Pawn enchanting the whole party's weapons with the right element is huge against bosses.
- Farm Wakestone Shards and Rift Crystals in BBI before the Seneschal and Daimon.
