A full guide to the original Darkest Dungeon: stress and afflictions, the hamlet, provisioning, party building, region and boss notes, the endgame, and the new 2026 DLC The Fire's Edge (Duelist, Runaway, Burn, and new districts).
Researched September 2026 — current as of Hotfix 27987 (14 September 2026) for The Fire's Edge. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Heroes are disposable; the hamlet isn't. Permadeath is the point. Invest heavily in a core roster and treat low-level recruits as expendable.
- Stress is as deadly as damage. At 100 stress a hero is tested for an Affliction (or, rarely, a Virtue). At 200 they suffer a heart attack.
- Upgrade the Stagecoach early so you can recruit more heroes per week and hold a bigger roster.
- Always bring enough food and torches. Starving and fighting in darkness both pile on stress.
- Stun and kill priority targets. Kill enemies that stress, stun, or heal first; leave a weak enemy alive only when you're deliberately stalling to heal.
- Use camping. On medium and long quests, camping skills heal, remove stress, and buff the party.
- Retreat is not failure. Abandoning a quest costs stress but keeps your heroes alive.
- Level restrictions: Heroes around level 3 and up won't enter Apprentice dungeons, and level 5 and up won't enter Veteran dungeons, so plan a leveling pipeline.
Core Mechanics
Stress, Afflictions, and Virtues
- Stress rises from crits against you, darkness, hunger, curios, enemy stress attacks, and allies' afflicted behaviour.
- At 100 stress, a hero gets an Affliction (Fearful, Paranoid, Selfish, Masochistic, Abusive, Hopeless, Irrational) that makes them act on their own and stress others, or a Virtue (Stalwart, Courageous, Focused, Powerful, Vigorous) that helps the party.
- At 200 stress, a heart attack drops them to Death's Door, or kills them if already there.
- Reduce stress with stress-heal skills (e.g., Jester's Inspiring Tune, Crusader's Inspiring Cry, Houndmaster's Cry Havoc), camping skills, and hamlet activities at the Tavern and Abbey.
Death's Door
A hero at 0 HP is at Death's Door. Each further hit risks death (Death Blow resistance decides). Heal them immediately. Leaving Death's Door applies a temporary debuff.
Light
The torch meter affects outcomes: high light makes scouting easier and reduces surprises; low light increases enemy crits and stress but improves loot. Beginners should keep light high.
Quirks and diseases
Heroes gain positive and negative quirks from dungeons. At the Sanitarium, lock in good quirks, remove bad ones, and cure diseases. Prioritise removing dangerous quirks (e.g., those that make heroes interact with curios on their own or that cause stress in specific regions).
The Hamlet
Building | Purpose
Stagecoach | Recruits and roster size; upgrade early
Tavern | Stress relief (bar, gambling, brothel)
Abbey | Stress relief (meditation, prayer, flagellation)
Sanitarium | Quirk and disease treatment
Blacksmith | Upgrades weapons and armour
Guild | Upgrades combat skills
Survivalist | Unlocks and upgrades camping skills
Nomad Wagon | Buy and sell trinkets
Graveyard (memorial) | Records the dead
Heirlooms (Busts, Portraits, Deeds, Crests) upgrade buildings. General priorities: Stagecoach, then Guild and Blacksmith for your core heroes, then stress-relief capacity.
Districts (DLC)
Districts are special buildings from The Crimson Court, The Color of Madness, and The Fire's Edge DLCs (not in the base game). Each costs gold, heirlooms, and a Blueprint. The first Blueprint arrives via the Cornerstone town event in week 10; more come from defeating Veteran or Champion bosses. Choose your first district carefully, because Blueprints are slow to collect.

The Fire's Edge (DLC, released 18 August 2026)
The first new DLC for the original game in about six years (since The Butcher's Circus in 2020). It ports two heroes from Darkest Dungeon II and adds narration ported from DD2, honouring narrator Wayne June, who passed away in early 2025.
Duelist
- Each battle she starts with Riposte active (2 rounds) and a temporary riposte-damage debuff (removable with Medicinal Herbs).
- Two stances: Defensive (Touché, Feint, Disengage) and Aggressive (Flèche, Coup de Grâce, The Boot); Anticipation is available in both and refreshes Riposte.
- Camping skills: Meditation, Preparation, Ruthless Instruction, Again! plus shared skills.
- Hotfix 27987 buffs: HP 21/25/29/33/37, Riposte accuracy 100 base, bigger Touché dodge, Feint +5% crit, Disengage now also grants dodge in position 4, Flèche damage +25%, and a better Meditation.
Runaway
- A Burn specialist: Searing Strike, Firefly, Run and Hide (moves back and grants stealth with healing), Ransack (pulls and clears corpses), Hearthlight (party accuracy/crit vs burning enemies), Controlled Burn (limited uses; ignites ranks for several rounds), Backdraft (spreads Burn).
- Camping skills: Kindle (prevents ambush), Cauterize, Play with Fire, Pick Pocket (creates a Skeleton Key).
- Hotfix 27987 lowered her HP to 22/26/30/34/38 and trimmed Searing Strike crit.
Other additions
- Burn: a new damage-over-time status.
- New trinket mechanics: Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, Progressive Trinkets. The hotfix removed the Dark Catalyst's quest-use limit and raised Flickering Lamplight's heal to 6.
- Districts: Académie Duello (a Riposte bonus; Hotfix 27987 swapped its +15% Riposte damage for +10 Riposte accuracy), Craftworks (weekly random trinket; bust cost cut to 75), Archaeological Base Camp (weekly random heirlooms; bust cost cut to 90).
- Each of Duelist and Runaway adds +1 roster size when enabled; since Hotfix 27987 that also applies on Stygian/Bloodmoon difficulty.
Mod Manager (beta)
An official Mod Manager is on the coming_in_hot beta branch (15 September 2026), launched from Steam's Play button. It currently supports the Steam version only. Back up your saves first; the classic in-game mod menu still works.
Regions and Bosses
Region | Common threats | Bosses
The Ruins | Undead; bring holy damage | Necromancer Apprentice, The Prophet
The Warrens | Swine, disease | Swine Prince, Formless Flesh
The Weald | Blight, fungal enemies, bandits | The Hag, Brigand Cannon
The Cove | Bleed, fishmen | The Siren, The Drowned Crew
The Courtyard (Crimson Court) | Bloodsuckers, the Crimson Curse | The Baron, The Viscount, The Countess
The Farmstead (Color of Madness) | Endless waves | The Miller, Thing from the Stars
Wandering threats include The Shambler (summoned from an altar in darkness), The Collector, and The Fanatic (hunts heroes with the Crimson Curse).
Boss tips
- Necromancer: Kill the summoned skeletons efficiently and focus the Necromancer when exposed.
- Hag: She pots a hero; keep damage on her and heal the captive.
- Siren: She charms a hero to her side; bring stun and high-damage single-target skills.
- Swine Prince: He has a very large HP pool and fights alongside Wilbur, a small pig who supports him. Bring damage over time (blight, bleed) and read Wilbur's skills before deciding who to focus.
- Formless Flesh: All parts must die near the same time or they revive; spread damage evenly.
- Brigand Cannon: Kill the matchman to stop cannon fire.
The Darkest Dungeon (Endgame)
The final dungeon has four missions and requires high-level (Champion-tier) heroes. Heroes who survive a Darkest Dungeon run refuse to enter it again (except for the final one), so you need a deep bench of max-level heroes. Bring extra food and torches, strong stress healers, and anti-stealth/anti-shuffle tools.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Letting stress snowball. One affliction can cascade into three.
- Skipping the Stagecoach upgrades. A small roster is a fragile roster.
- Buying trinkets over upgrades early. Skills and gear upgrades usually matter more.
- Poking curios blind. Use the right provision items or skip.
- Fighting in total darkness before you're ready.
- Sending your best team on every quest. Rest them while a B-team levels.
Advanced Tips
- Stall to heal (carefully) with one harmless enemy left alive; don't overdo it, as ambushes and stress grow.
- Positioning: Many skills only work from certain ranks. Bring anti-shuffle options or party members who work in several ranks.
- Trinket synergy: Build around each hero's role, e.g., speed and crit for damage dealers, heal and stress resistance for supports.
- Plan district choices around your roster; Académie Duello only matters if the Duelist is in your core team.
- Radiant mode speeds progression for players who want less grinding; Stygian/Bloodmoon adds a week limit and higher stakes.
