This covers the stable Steam version of 20 Minutes Till Dawn: how a run works, how to pick upgrades and build around a weapon, how to spend Souls on Runes, and what the announced Blessings and Curses overhaul changes.
Researched September 2026, current as of the 1.0.x release line (1.0 launched 8 June 2023; the Katana character arrived November 2023). The "Blessings & Curses" overhaul was announced for beta testing in October 2024; as of September 2026 that is still the latest official Steam announcement, with no official release post. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- You aim and fire yourself. Unlike Vampire Survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawn has you control movement, aim and shooting. Aim matters, and so does keeping up a rhythm of reloads.
- Survive 20 minutes to win. Enemies scale up the whole time and bosses appear at set points. The store page pitches 10-20 minute runs, so shorter options exist for quick sessions.
- Enemies drop XP; each level gives you a choice of upgrades. Pick ones that fit a plan, not just the biggest number.
- Bosses drop chests with powerful rewards (Tomes in the 1.0 build). Killing bosses is worth the risk.
- Souls carry over between runs. Spend them on Runes, new characters and new weapons in the main menu.
- Weapons evolve at level 20. Each weapon offers three evolution variants to choose from. Plan your build so the evolution you want has support.
- Kite in circles. Constant movement in a wide loop keeps the horde in front of you and your shots landing.
- Win once to open more content. According to the patch notes, clearing the 20-minute mode once unlocks the Temple map.
How a Run Works
Phase | What happens | What you should do
Opening minutes | Weak enemies, low density | Farm XP and grab core upgrades for your weapon
Mid run | Denser waves, tougher enemy types | Lock in your build direction, pick up defensive options
Boss spawns | Big enemy with attack patterns | Keep distance, focus fire, then open the chest it drops
Late run | Screens full of enemies | Rely on your build's clearing power and mobility
Dawn (20:00) | Run complete | Collect your Souls (the announced overhaul plans an option to "loop" here instead)
You earn Souls during the run and spend them in the main menu afterwards, whether you win or lose.
Characters
Each character has a unique ability or trait, and a few change how the game plays entirely. Names below come from the official Steam patch notes.
Character | What the official notes say about them
Shana | Her kit was built around rerolls, and the developer announced that rerolls would become standard for everyone with a Shana rework to match
Diamond | Associated with a "Strong Will" buff
Abby | Interacts with the Magic Bow weapon's mechanics
Hina | Dash invulnerability and shadow clones
Luna | Creates black holes that pull monsters in
Hastur | Summons tentacles to smash enemies
Raven | Summons crows that curse enemies
Yuki | Sends out waves of butterflies that freeze foes
Dasher | Transforms into an invulnerable deer to stomp through hordes (added as a holiday character)
Katana | Sword-summoning character added in November 2023 (has a "Fire Edge" upgrade)
The roster has more than this, and unlocks cost Souls. Read each character's trait text in the menu before buying, since several are built around a specific weapon or play style.
Weapons
Weapon | Style
Revolver | Classic reliable starter. Solid scaling with bullet upgrades.
Shotgun | Close-range spread. Great with fire and knockback builds.
Dual SMGs | High fire rate. Pairs with on-hit effects.
Batgun | Unusual projectile weapon from the official notes
Magic Bow | Arrows linger on the ground and return to you when you reload
Cyclone Sword | Spin attack for cutting through large swarms (added in 1.0)
Salvo Knives | Tracks enemies while you move, then throws a barrage of knives (added in 1.0)
Watering Gun | Tied to a Spore Flower summon
Evolutions: Since 1.0, every weapon offers three evolution choices at level 20. They take your weapon in different directions (more projectiles, more damage per shot, special effects), so check what each does before you take one.
Upgrade Trees
When you level up you pick from a set of upgrades, and each belongs to a tree. Taking the first node of a tree unlocks deeper options from it later. Trees and nodes named in the official patch notes include:
Tree | Direction | Named nodes (from patch notes)
Bullet Damage | Raw weapon damage | Power Shot, Big Shot, Reaper Round, Splinter
Fire Rate | Shooting speed | Rubber Bullets, Siege
Magnetism | XP pickup range | Magnetism, Excitement, Watch and Learn
Vision | Sight-range based upgrades | Glare, Saccade
Health | Survivability | Anger Point, Giant
Ice | Freezing enemies | (freeze duration was cut from 3 to 1.5 seconds in a patch)
Dark Arts | Curses that deal big damage |
Holy Arts | Smites enemies with holy swords |
Aero Magic | Wind-based magic |
Soul Heart | Defensive soul hearts |
Magic Scythe / Magic Spear / Magic Lens | Orbiting or auto magic weapons |
Ghost Friend | Ghost summons |
Trainer / Frenzy | Summon damage and summon attack speed |
Dragon | Dragon summon | Aged Dragon
Synergies
Combining specific nodes from different trees unlocks a synergy upgrade. Examples from the patch notes:
Synergy | Requirements
Death Plague | Ritual + Reaper Rounds
Generator | Recharge + Energized
Kunoichi | In The Wind + Assassin
Sword and Shield | Justice + Holy Shield
Titan | Angelic + Giant
Synergies are among the strongest picks in a run. If you already have one half, weigh the matching tree higher.
Build Archetypes
Gun build (Revolver, Shotgun, Dual SMGs). Stack Bullet Damage and Fire Rate, grab Magnetism early for easier XP, and pick one defensive tree (Health or Soul Heart). Take the weapon evolution that adds projectiles or pierce for clearing.
Summoner build. Take Ghost Friend or Dragon, then Trainer and Frenzy to scale summon damage and speed. Summons draw aggro and clear while you move freely. Pairs well with characters whose abilities also summon (Hastur, Raven).
Elemental/magic build. Ice for crowd control, Dark Arts or Holy Arts for burst, and Magic Scythe or Magic Spear for passive clearing. Magic Spear scales with max HP, so the Health tree feeds it.
Mobility/evasion build. Invest in dodge and movement upgrades for characters with invulnerability tools like Hina and Dasher.
Runes and Souls
- Souls are the persistent currency. You earn them every run.
- Runes are permanent passive bonuses bought with Souls in the main menu. Patches have reworked several. For example, older runes such as Elemental Shield, Last Stand, Second Wind and Guardian were replaced by Agility, Premonition, Wind Shield and Body and Soul.
- Priority: early on, buy survivability and XP-related runes first, then unlock one or two more characters and weapons to try new builds.
Blessings and Curses (announced overhaul)
In October 2024 the developer announced a major update, "Blessings & Curses", as being in closed beta with public beta testing to follow. As of September 2026 there has been no further official news post on Steam confirming a public beta or full release, so treat everything below as announced, not guaranteed. Announced changes:
- Blessings: at certain early levels you choose one of three powerful effects, from big stat boosts to unique versions of upgrades.
- Curses: a rework of the old boss Tomes. Chests offer curses that give power with heavy penalties, in rarities from simple stat trade-offs to rare run-changing effects.
- Enemy overhaul: new enemies, reworked and new bosses, with bosses spawning their own minions.
- Reworked runes, character upgrades and upgrade perks, and new characters.
- Endless becomes a loop: earlier dev posts said the standalone Endless mode would be replaced by an option to "loop" at the end of a won run, keeping your build with a new pool of stackable upgrades.
Whether you see these depends on the branch you're on. If you've opted into a beta branch in Steam (Properties > Betas), your game will differ from the stable version described above.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Standing still to shoot. Movement is your main defense. Shoot while strafing.
- Spreading picks across too many trees. Deep trees and synergies beat many shallow picks.
- Ignoring Magnetism early. Faster XP collection snowballs the whole run.
- Fighting bosses in open fields of enemies. Clear space first, then commit.
- Skipping reload timing. Reload during lulls, not when a wave arrives.
- Buying characters before core runes. A few permanent survival runes make every character better.
Advanced Tips
- Plan your evolution at level 20 before you reach it, and take the upgrades that feed into it.
- Use rerolls on dead-end offers (where your character or build has them) instead of taking a weak upgrade.
- Circle the map edge to string enemies into a line for piercing shots.
- Summons also count as damage sources. The Trainer and Frenzy trees make summon builds scale well into the late game.
- Match character to weapon. Abby with the Magic Bow and summoner characters with summon trees give built-in synergy.
- Save Soul spending for a planned unlock rather than buying the cheapest option each time.
