From your first night out of the crypt to hunting Dracula: V Blood progression, castle building, blood types, gear, and PvE/PvP tips for V Rising 1.1.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 1.1 "Invaders of Oakveil" (patch 1.1.13.0 plus Hot Fix 12, September 11, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status note: In Dev Update #32 (March 2026), Stunlock Studios said V Rising is "complete" as it stands. There is no 1.2 content update planned. The studio is still shipping balance patches and hotfixes (the latest was on September 11, 2026). The game is fully playable solo, co-op, and on official or community servers.
Quick Start
- Sunlight kills you. It damages you fast and can burn you to ashes. During the day, travel through shadows (trees, buildings, cliffs). A Sun Resistance stat and some potions help, but nothing makes you safe in the midday sun early on.
- Your progression comes from V Blood carriers (bosses). Each boss you drink from unlocks recipes, abilities, or shapeshift forms. Use the Blood Altar to track the next boss, and fight bosses close to your Gear Level.
- Gear Level is your real level. Your level is the average of your equipped gear. Craft the next tier of weapons and armor as soon as you can.
- Put a Castle Heart down early in a safe, flat spot near several resources. You can move later. Keep it fueled with Blood Essence, or it decays.
- Always feed on the best blood you can find. High-quality blood gives you big passive bonuses. Hover a weakened target to see its blood type and quality before you feed.
- Build a Research Desk, a Sawmill, a Furnace, and a Grinder in the first few hours. Planks, Copper/Iron Ingots, and Bone Dust drive the whole early tech tree.
- Use Travel Shapeshifts. You unlock the Wolf form early (Alpha, the White Wolf). It is much faster than walking.
- Carry Blood Merlot or Blood Rose potions and learn to dodge. Combat is WASD skillshot action. Most boss attacks are readable and can be dodged with the dash/Veil.
- Waygates (fast-travel stones) link the map. Unlock them as you explore. You can't teleport while carrying certain resources (ores, gems, and other "heavy" materials).
- Back up your save or server files regularly. Stunlock repeats this advice in every patch note.
Core Systems
Controls (PC defaults)
Action | Key
Move | W A S D
Primary attack | Left Mouse
Weapon skill 1 / 2 | Q / E
Veil (dash) | Shown on your ability bar (rebindable)
Two spell slots and ultimate | Shown on your ability bar (rebindable)
Feed / drain blood | Hold the feed key on a weakened target
Map | M
Default bindings can differ by version, so read the key hints on your ability bar and check Settings > Controls, where you can rebind everything. Native gamepad support has been in since 1.0.
Blood Types
You always carry one blood type. Its quality (0 to 100%) sets how strong its passive tiers are. Update 1.1 reworked every blood type to be more combat-focused and added the Blood Homogenizer, a castle machine that "allows you to blend two blood types, gaining bonuses from both." The in-game Homogenizer tooltip explains the inputs.
Blood | Found on | What it helps with (1.1 tiers)
Worker | Farmers, miners, woodcutters | Resource yield, damage to resource nodes, mount speed — ideal when gathering
Warrior | Soldiers, militia | Physical power, weapon skill power and cooldowns — weapon-skill builds
Scholar | Clerics, mages | Spell power, spell cooldowns, ultimate power — spell builds
Rogue | Bandits, thieves, archers | Crit chance and damage, movement speed, Veil cooldown
Brute | Brutes, heavy units | Primary attack speed, attack life leech, max health, parry chance — sustain fighters
Creature | Animals | Max health and regeneration, healing received, resistances, movement speed
Mutant | Gloomrot mutants | Spell power, ultimate cooldown/power, summons Mutant Rats on ultimate
Draculin | Specific late-game enemies | Spell crit chance and power, spell leech
Corrupted | Oakveil (1.1) enemies | Movement/attack speed and charge rate, each with a downside (it can spawn a shadow that attacks you). Patch 1.1.13.0 stopped those spawns from triggering counters.
Blood tier bonuses change in balance patches. Read the tooltip on the blood orb in-game instead of relying on old spreadsheets.
Prisons. Later you can build Prison Cells to hold high-quality prisoners and feed on them whenever you want to switch blood types. In 1.1, Dominate Human became Dominate, which can charm any unit with a blood type, and prisons can now drain creature blood too. Servant conversion is still mostly limited to humans.
Castle Building
- Castle Heart. It sets your territory and upkeep. Upgrading it raises how many floor tiles you can build and how many servants you can keep.
- Blood Essence. This is the Heart's fuel. It drops from enemies and animals, and you can refine it from Blood Essence items. Watch the timer on the Heart.
- Doors, walls, and floors. Enclose workstations in a room with floors and walls. Some stations and bonuses need a room with a roof, and it shades you from the sun too.
- Refinement chain. Sawmill (Planks), Furnace (Ingots), Grinder (Bone Dust, gem dust), Tannery (Leather), Loom (cloth), Alchemy Table (potions), Gem Cutting Table, and later the Anvil, Artisan's Table, and Vampire Altar/Throne pieces.
- Coffin. A coffin is your respawn point, and servants need their own coffins.
Servants (Thralls)
Use the Servant Coffin to convert humans who are "dominated" (at low HP) and have high-quality blood. Send them on Hunts from the throne to bring back resources while you're away. Better blood quality means stronger servants and better loot, but they can be injured or killed on missions. Pick a mission's risk level based on the servant's gear.
Weapons and Abilities
Each weapon has two skills (Q/E) plus a primary attack. Your spells come from V Blood bosses and from spell schools: Blood, Chaos, Frost, Illusion, Storm, Unholy. Jewels (added in Secrets of Gloomrot) modify individual spells, so a single jewel can completely change how an ability plays.
Weapon roster: Sword, Axes, Mace, Spear, Crossbow, Slashers, Reaper, Pistols, Greatsword, Longbow, Whip. Update 1.1 added Claws, Throwing Daggers, and a Twinblade (dual-bladed staff).
Try every weapon type early. Blood/Frost/Chaos spells combined with Slashers, Spear, or Crossbow are all proven leveling setups. There's no single "correct" build.
Progression Path
The world of Vardoran is split into regions that get harder as you go. The usual order:
Region | Rough stage | Highlights
Farbane Woods | Start (gear roughly 1–30) | Bandit camps, first V Bloods, Copper, Wolf form
Dunley Farmlands | Early-mid | Militia, Iron, farmlands full of good blood
Silverlight Hills | Mid-late | Church of the Damned, holy damage threats, Silver (hurts to carry)
Gloomrot (North and South) | Mid-late | Tech-focused faction, Mutants, Power Cores, electricity
Cursed Forest | Mid-late | Dangerous curse areas, witches and werewolves
Hallowed Mountains | Late | Snow region, holy enemies
Mortium | Endgame | Dracula's domain, shard bosses
Oakveil Woodlands (1.1) | Mid-late add-on region | Venom Blades faction, Venom Sap resource, Corrupted blood, final boss Megara the Serpent Queen
Early V Blood targets (typical order)
Use the Blood Altar. It lists each carrier's level and tracks them for you. Common early kills in Farbane Woods:
- Alpha, the White Wolf: unlocks the Wolf form. Kill it immediately.
- Keely the Frost Archer: her Frost-related unlocks help your early kit.
- Errol the Stonebreaker: grinding and stone-related unlocks.
- Rufus the Foreman, Grayson the Armourer, Goreswine the Ravager, Lidia the Chaos Archer, Clive the Firestarter, Nibbles the Putrid Rat, and Quincey the Bandit King round out the Farbane chain. Quincey is the region's "exam."
After that come the Dunley bosses: Tristan the Vampire Hunter, Beatrice the Tailor, Vincent the Frostbringer, Octavian the Militia Captain, and others. These unlock iron-tier equipment, more spells, and castle upgrades.
Endgame
- Shard bosses (such as Solarus the Immaculate, Adam the Firstborn, and the Winged Horror) drop soul shards, which grant an ultimate. Since 1.1 you can override a shard's ultimate with any other ultimate from your spellbook, and the Stygian Summoning Circle can summon Blood Souls.
- Megara the Serpent Queen is the final boss of the 1.1 Oakveil Woodlands content.
- Dracula the Immortal in Mortium is the final boss. Beating him "completes" the story.
- Ancestral weapons and gear fusion (1.1). Top-tier weapons roll random attributes. The Fusion Forge combines Reforged or Shattered Ancestral Weapons to pull the best attributes onto one weapon (jewels work similarly).
Gear and Stat Priorities
- Keep every armor slot and your weapon at the current tier. Your Gear Level comes from all of them together, and bosses hit hard if you're under-geared.
- Amulets and bags. Bags add inventory space and need leather/cloth. Upgrade them early.
- Physical builds: Warrior or Rogue blood, Physical Power, attack speed, crit.
- Spell builds: Scholar blood, Spell Power, cooldown reduction, and jewels on your main spells.
- Sustain: Brute blood, or Blood-school spells like Sanguine Coil and Blood Rage for heals.
PvE Tips
- Fight bosses at night. Daylight makes kiting miserable.
- Clear adds before you engage. Many bosses call reinforcements or fight inside camps.
- Learn one "panic button": a shield, an invulnerable spell, or a movement skill.
- Garlic zones and holy radiation drain you. Craft or brew the matching resistance potions before Silverlight, Hallowed Mountains, and the Church.
- On private or solo servers you can tweak the server settings (boss damage, sun damage, loot, castle decay) to suit your group.
PvP Tips
- Raiding needs Siege Golems / explosives, and you can only raid during the server's raid window. Check the server rules.
- Hide valuables in several chests. Don't stack everything next to the Heart.
- Castle location matters. Pick chokepoints and avoid easy approaches near popular Waygates.
- Learn counters and cleanses. Many PvP deaths come from getting chain-stunned. Keep one mobility and one defensive ability.
- On official PvP servers, expect clans to rush endgame. The 1.1 Contests system (a Dueling Banner for 1v1s and an Arena Station for team fights in your castle) is the safe place to practice.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Letting your Castle Heart run out of Blood Essence while you're offline, especially on PvP servers.
- Keeping low-quality blood. Always swap up to a better blood type.
- Walking in daylight without a route through the shade.
- Trying to teleport with ore or other heavy resources. The Waygate refuses, so plan to walk them home or process them near where you found them.
- Falling behind on Gear Level and then complaining that a boss is overtuned.
- Ignoring servants. Hunts are free resources while you sleep.
- Not backing up your server save before a patch.
Advanced Tips
- Blood Homogenizer (1.1): blend two blood types for layered passives. Worker plus Creature makes a great farming mix, and a combat blood with your secondary gives a better fighting mix.
- Jewel crafting: save the good jewel rolls for your core rotation spells, since they're what you cast most.
- Castle layout: keep refinement stations near storage and use linked chests, so crafting pulls from nearby containers.
- Farming routes: plan loops around Waygates at night. Farm servant hunts, bandit camps, and ore nodes on cooldown.
- Corrupted blood: it's strong for bossing now that its ghosts no longer trigger counters (as of 1.1.13.0).
