A spoiler-light companion for The Witcher 3 Complete Edition covering difficulty, combat, builds with real skill and gear names, the story outline with its big decisions and missables, and when to start Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 4.04 (Complete Edition). CD PROJEKT RED has announced a free "Wild Hunt – Remastered" upgrade for existing owners launching September 29, 2026, and a new expansion, Songs of the Past (set in Letten), for 2027. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Remastered note: The Remastered upgrade is free for owners on PC and current-gen platforms (and Switch owners can claim it on Switch 2). It bundles Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and current base-game owners get free access to both expansions too. CDPR describes it as upgrades to visuals, gameplay and more, but hasn't detailed every change, so a few numbers or menus in this guide may shift after the upgrade.
Quick Start
- Pick "Blood and Broken Bones!" if you've played action RPGs before. "Story and Sword" is fine for story-first players. "Death March!" is the true challenge and makes alchemy and preparation matter.
- Read the bestiary and use the right oils, bombs and signs. Monster weaknesses are the core of the game. Steel sword for humans and beasts, silver sword for monsters.
- Quen is your best friend. This shield sign absorbs a hit and saves you on every difficulty.
- Dodge (short sidestep) beats roll in melee. Save rolls for large area attacks.
- Do Witcher Contracts and Treasure Hunts for Witcher gear. School gear diagrams (Feline, Griffin, Ursine, Wolven) come from treasure hunts and upgrade through Enhanced, Superior and Mastercrafted tiers.
- Don't rush the main quest. Side quests are some of the best writing in the game. The main story also has points after which some quests fail.
- Meditate to refill potions. Once you craft a potion, meditating refills it using Alcohest or Dwarven Spirit, so keep spirits in your inventory.
- Use a Place of Power whenever you see one. The first visit gives a permanent skill point.
- Complete Edition extras: Next-gen options include quick sign casting, an alternative closer camera, and photo mode. Turn them on in Options if you like them.
Difficulty Settings
Difficulty | Who it's for
Just the Story | Minimal combat challenge
Story and Sword | Balanced; story-first players
Blood and Broken Bones! | Standard challenge; recommended for most players
Death March! | Hard: enemies hit much harder, preparation is mandatory; required for a trophy/achievement
You can change difficulty at any time in the options, except that the Death March achievement needs the whole game played on it.
Combat Fundamentals
- Fast vs. strong attacks: Fast attacks are safer and build Adrenaline. Strong attacks break guards and hit hard but leave you open.
- Dodge, roll and parry: Dodge through attacks, and use counterattacks against humans once you learn their timing. Monsters generally can't be parried.
- Stamina: Signs cost stamina, and so do some combat actions. Stamina regenerates over time and potions like Tawny Owl speed it up.
- Adrenaline Points: Build them by landing hits. Several skills and set bonuses consume or scale with them.
- Toxicity: Potions add toxicity. Go over the limit and you take damage. Decoctions (made from mutagens) take up a large chunk of toxicity but last a long time.
- Crossbow: Knocks flying monsters out of the air and is a must for underwater fights.
Signs
Sign | Effect | Best use
Aard | Telekinetic blast: stagger, knockdown, breaks walls | Crowd control; knocks shielded enemies over
Igni | Fire stream or burst; sets targets on fire | Drowners, Nekkers, anything weak to fire
Yrden | Magic trap slowing enemies; forces specters (Wraiths, Nightwraiths) into physical form | Wraiths, Noonwraiths, crowd slowing
Quen | Protective shield | Always on, especially Death March
Axii | Stuns or confuses; used in dialogue for persuasion | Big single targets, dialogue options
Oils, bombs and potions (key early ones)
Item | What it does
Necrophage Oil | Bonus vs. drowners, ghouls, grave hags
Specter Oil | Bonus vs. wraiths
Hanged Man's Venom | Bonus vs. humans and nonhumans
Swallow | Health regeneration
Thunderbolt | Attack power
Cat | Night vision
Dancing Star | Fire damage bomb
Moon Dust | Stops shapeshifting, regeneration and invisibility (werewolves, some vampires)
Dimeritium Bomb | Blocks magic
Devil's Puffball | Poison cloud
Upgrade formulas (Enhanced and Superior) boost their strength and charges. Always refill after meditation.
Character Progression
Skill trees: Combat, Signs, Alchemy, and General. You unlock skill slots as you level and pair slots with Mutagens (red, green, blue), which give bonuses that grow when you match mutagen color to skill color in the same group.
The level cap is 100 in the Complete Edition. Your level also matters for gear, which has level requirements, and for enemy difficulty. Enemies with a skull icon are far above your level.
Build archetypes
Build | Core skills | Gear | Notes
Fast-attack combat | Muscle Memory, Whirl, Lightning Reflexes, Resolve | Feline (Cat) school gear, then Grandmaster Feline (Blood and Wine) | Big crits, fast damage; light armor
Heavy tank | Strength Training, Crushing Blows, Rend | Ursine (Bear) school gear | Heavy armor, strong attacks, Quen synergy
Sign caster | Quen (Exploding Shield), Igni (Firestream), Delusion, Sustained Glyphs | Griffin school gear | Sign intensity; strong with Firestream Igni
Alchemy | Acquired Tolerance, Heightened Tolerance, Synergy, Tissue Transmutation | Manticore gear (Blood and Wine) | Stack decoctions; big sustain
Hybrid | Mix of combat and alchemy | Wolven (Wolf) school gear | Balanced; Wolven works well with bombs and oils
Mutations (Blood and Wine): After the expansion's Mutation quest with Regis, you unlock mutation slots and special abilities such as Euphoria (toxicity boosts damage and sign intensity), which is popular with alchemy builds.
Crafting
- Diagrams specify craftsman level: Journeyman, Master, Grandmaster. Grandmaster gear needs the Blood and Wine grandmaster craftsmen, such as Fergus the blacksmith in Beauclair (reached through a Blood and Wine quest).
- Always dismantle junk for crafting materials, or sell it to armorers and blacksmiths.
- Put gear-crafting money into the school sets. They carry you through the game.
Main Story Outline (spoiler-light)
Chapter | Key areas | Notes
Prologue | Kaer Morhen (dream), White Orchard, Vizima | Tutorial. Do White Orchard's contract and side quests for early XP
Act I | Velen, Novigrad, Skellige (any order) | Search for Ciri: the Bloody Baron in Velen, Triss and Dandelion in Novigrad, Yennefer on Skellige
Act II | Kaer Morhen and beyond | Battle of Kaer Morhen. Recruit allies beforehand
Act III | Various | Endgame; world-state and Ciri decisions decide the ending
Point-of-no-return warnings
- Before "The Battle of Kaer Morhen": Finish the "Brothers in Arms" recruitment quests if you want the full roster of allies. Examples include convincing Keira Metz to go to Kaer Morhen (in "For the Advancement of Learning") and helping Roche, Zoltan, Hjalmar and others.
- Before starting "Tedd Deireadh, The Final Age": The game warns you. After this point, most remaining side quests can't be completed until the post-game (and some fail). Wrap everything up first.
- Novigrad political quests (Dijkstra, Roche, the Emperor) branch based on your choices and influence the world ending.
Romance
- Triss: Kiss her at the masquerade in "A Matter of Life and Death," then tell her you love her ("Stay. I love you.") in "Now or Never." Do "Now or Never" as soon as it appears.
- Yennefer: Choose "I love you" in "The Last Wish" (Skellige, Act II/III).
- Pursuing both backfires in a memorable scene, and you'll end up with neither. Pick one.
Ciri's endings (spoilers light)
Ciri's ending depends on how you treat her at five key moments, spread across three late-game quests:
Quest | Moment | Supportive choice
Blood on the Battlefield (after the Battle of Kaer Morhen) | Ciri is grieving at Kaer Morhen | "Think I know what might lift your spirits" (the snowball fight)
Blood on the Battlefield | If you go with her to see Emhyr in Vizima | Decline the payment
Final Preparations | Ciri asks about the Lodge meeting | "You'll do fine on your own"
Child of the Elder Blood | Ciri loses her temper in Avallac'h's lab | "Go for it" (let her smash it)
Child of the Elder Blood | Ciri wants to visit Skjall's grave | "Yeah, I'll go with you"
Community breakdowns commonly cite at least three supportive choices as the threshold for Ciri to survive, and accepting Emhyr's payment counts against you. The Empress ending additionally requires taking her to see Emhyr, and Nilfgaard must win the war (which hinges on the Novigrad political quests with Dijkstra, Roche and Radovid). If Ciri survives without both, you get the Witcher ending. Make all five supportive choices if you want to be safe.
Expansions: When to Start
Expansion | Start quest | Suggested level | Notes
Hearts of Stone | "Evil's Soft First Touches" (notice board contract in Velen/Novigrad) | 30+ | 10ish-hour story; the Gaunter O'Dimm arc; Runewords via the Enchanter
Blood and Wine | "Envoys, Wineboys" (Toussaint; notice board in Velen) | 34+ | Big new region, Grandmaster gear, Mutations, Corvo Bianco vineyard
Both can be started any time after early Act I, but they're built for higher levels. Blood and Wine has its own epilogue and is best played after the main story.
Patch 4.0 content: The next-gen update added a new quest, "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow," with Netflix series-inspired armor and extra gear.
Gwent (in-game)
- Get your starting deck from the innkeeper in White Orchard ("Gwent: Playing Innkeeps").
- Monsters and Northern Realms are the easiest early decks. Nilfgaard becomes excellent with spies and heroes. Skellige comes with Blood and Wine.
- Missable cards: Many cards can only be won from specific characters or tournaments before quests end. The Novigrad "High Stakes" tournament is time-sensitive, as are cards from certain Act I characters. Check a card checklist if you're going for "Collect 'Em All."
- Spy cards give you card advantage, which is how you win most matches.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring Quen and alchemy on higher difficulties. You'll get two-shot by Wraiths and Wyverns.
- Fighting monsters with the steel sword (or humans with silver). Check which sword is equipped.
- Selling key items early. Keep Witcher gear diagrams, mutagens and relic weapons, and don't sell quest items.
- Rushing Kaer Morhen without recruiting allies.
- Starting "Tedd Deireadh" with side content unfinished.
- Running Blood and Wine at a low level. Many Toussaint monsters are scaled for 34+.
- Hoarding and never crafting. Crafted school gear outperforms most loot.
- Pursuing Triss and Yennefer simultaneously if you want a romance ending.
Advanced Tips
- Upgrade enhanced school gear as you level. Each tier needs a higher character level and a better craftsman.
- Euphoria plus alchemy is one of the strongest Death March setups: stack decoctions and potions to push damage way up.
- Griffin set bonus: The Griffin set's Quen-related effects combine well with sign builds. The Griffin and Feline sets have strong "Grandmaster" versions in Blood and Wine.
- Money: Selling to Novigrad and Beauclair merchants gives better prices. Horse racing, contracts and Gwent add up.
- Places of Power: Each gives a skill point on first use. There's one near nearly every region, so hunt for them.
- Question marks: Clearing Velen and Skellige monster nests, bandit camps and hidden treasures gives XP and gear, but the smuggler caches around Skellige's ocean aren't worth your time.
- Photo mode: Available in the Complete Edition. It works in most scenes, with free camera, filters and lighting controls.
- Mods: REDkit, CDPR's official modding tool, is available on PC. Cross-platform mod support through mod.io was announced for 2026, but check CDPR's news before counting on it for consoles.
FAQ
Is The Witcher 3 Remastered a separate purchase? No. It's a free upgrade for existing owners on GOG, Steam, Epic, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, launching September 29, 2026. Switch owners can claim it on Switch 2. It bundles Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and CDPR says current base-game owners also get free access to both expansions.
What is Songs of the Past? A new Witcher 3 expansion from CDPR, set in the new realm of Letten, announced for 2027.
What level should I start Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine? Around level 30 for Hearts of Stone and 34 for Blood and Wine.
Do I need to play Witcher 1 and 2 first? No. The story stands alone. The game summarizes earlier events, and a dialogue simulation lets you set key world-state choices from The Witcher 2.
How do I get the best ending for Ciri? Make the supportive choices listed above in "Blood on the Battlefield," "Final Preparations" and "Child of the Elder Blood." Three or more is the commonly cited threshold, but all five is the safe play. Take her to Emhyr (and refuse his payment) if you want the Empress ending.
Can I continue after the main story ends? Yes. You can keep playing after the credits, and Blood and Wine is designed to be played after the main story.
Best difficulty for a first playthrough? Blood and Broken Bones! for most players. Story and Sword if you mainly want the narrative.
What's the best early gear? Witcher school gear from the Scavenger Hunt quests. Griffin gear in Velen is the first set most players find. Feline, Ursine and Wolven follow, then upgrade each set through its tiers as you level.
