This guide covers Sonic Adventure 2 on PC: how the Hero and Dark stories unlock the Last story, how each of the three gameplay styles works, getting A ranks and all 180 emblems for Green Hill, Chao raising basics, and the community mod setup that fixes the PC port.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (2012 PC port, no recent patches) with the current community SA Mod Manager. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: a finished game. The Steam version is the 2012 port of the Dreamcast/GameCube game. The optional Sonic Adventure 2: Battle DLC adds the GameCube "Battle" extras: six extra characters, 21 additional two-player battle maps, and Chao Karate. The PC port has rough edges, and most players fix them with community mods (see "PC Fixes and Mods").

Quick Start

  • Play Hero and Dark stories in any order, then Last. The final story unlocks after you finish both.
  • Every stage has 5 missions. Mission 1 is clearing the stage. Missions 2 to 5 unlock one at a time after you clear the previous mission.
  • Emblems are the completion counter. You earn them for clearing missions and for a range of other tasks (kart races, Boss Attack, Chao races and more). All 180 emblems unlock a 3D remake of Green Hill Zone.
  • Upgrades change what you can reach. Each character finds power-ups in stages, and several missions (especially the Lost Chao ones) are impossible without them.
  • Rank is about score. Rings, enemy chains, tricks and time all feed your score. Big combos and bonus points matter more than just finishing fast.
  • Keep the Chao Garden in mind. Small animals and Chaos Drives from enemies go straight to your Chao, so pick them up in stages.
  • Treasure hunting uses the radar. As Knuckles or Rouge, the colour of the radar at the bottom of the screen tells you how close you are to each emerald piece.
  • Chain lock-ons in the mech stages. As Tails or Eggman, locking several targets at once and firing gives score multipliers.

Story Structure

Story | Characters | Notes

Hero | Sonic, Tails, Knuckles | Stages and bosses alternate between the three

Dark | Shadow, Dr. Eggman, Rouge | Same format, from the villains' side

Last | All | Unlocks after finishing both Hero and Dark. Includes Cannon's Core and the final boss fights (Biolizard, then Finalhazard)

Stages by character

Character | Style | Stages

Sonic | Speed | City Escape, Metal Harbor, Green Forest, Pyramid Cave, Crazy Gadget, Final Rush

Shadow | Speed | Radical Highway, White Jungle, Sky Rail, Final Chase

Tails | Mech shooting | Prison Lane, Mission Street, Hidden Base, Eternal Engine (plus the Route 101 kart stage)

Dr. Eggman | Mech shooting | Iron Jungle, Sand Ocean, Lost Colony, Weapons Bed, Cosmic Wall

Knuckles | Treasure hunt | Wild Canyon, Pumpkin Hill, Aquatic Mine, Death Chamber, Meteor Herd

Rouge | Treasure hunt | Dry Lagoon, Egg Quarters, Security Hall, Mad Space (plus the Route 280 kart stage)

All | Mixed | Cannon's Core (Last story)

Boss fights appear between stages in both stories. Examples include King Boom Boo, the Egg Golem, Hot Shot, Flying Dog, the F-6t Big Foot and the rival-character duels. You can replay bosses from Stage Select once you've cleared them.

The Three Gameplay Styles

Speed stages (Sonic, Shadow)

  • Homing Attack (jump, then jump again near a target) chains through enemies and springs. Chaining it is the core of the speed stages.
  • Grinding: hold the action button while grinding to crouch and speed up, and trick off ramps and rail ends for points.
  • Light Dash (with the Light Shoes upgrade) zips along lines of rings. There are hidden ring trails for shortcuts everywhere.
  • Speed-stage scoring: trick ramps, enemy chains and finishing fast all add up. A slow finish costs you time bonus, so don't over-explore on a rank attempt.

Mech stages (Tails, Dr. Eggman)

  • Hold the fire button to lock on to several targets, then release. Destroying several at once gives bonus points that grow with the chain size.
  • Most of your score comes from big lock-on chains. Destroying everything one target at a time gives low scores.
  • Your mech has a health bar, not a ring count. Collecting rings slowly refills it, so grab rings when you're low instead of pushing on.

Treasure hunting (Knuckles, Rouge)

  • Find 3 emerald pieces per stage. Hint monitors give clues, from vague to explicit, and reading hints costs points.
  • The radar changes colour as you get closer to each piece.
  • Shovel Claw and similar upgrades let you dig into walls and floors where pieces are hidden.
  • Scoring: find pieces fast, avoid hints and collect rings and enemies along the way.

Missions and Ranks

Mission | Typical requirement

1 | Clear the stage

2 | Collect 100 rings

3 | Find the Lost Chao (usually needs the Mystic Melody or other upgrades)

4 | Clear within a time limit

5 | Hard mode: a remixed, harder version of the stage

Kart stages and some others have their own mission types. Ranks go from E to A. A-ranking missions isn't just for pride: the "Mission Complete" and "You Are The Legend" achievements need them (see Achievements below).

Emblem strategy

  • Do each character's Mission 1 in order during the story.
  • Collect all upgrades, including every Mystic Melody, because many Lost Chao are behind Mystic Melody shrines.
  • Go back and do Missions 2 to 5 per stage.
  • Grind A ranks last. Some (Mad Space, Cannon's Core, Crazy Gadget and the hunting stages) take practice.

Upgrades Worth Knowing

These are found inside stages. Missing one can block missions:

Character | Notable upgrades

Sonic | Light Shoes (Light Dash), Ancient Light, Flame Ring, Bounce Bracelet, Magic Gloves, Mystic Melody

Shadow | Air Shoes, Ancient Light, Flame Ring, Mystic Melody

Knuckles | Shovel Claw, Hammer Gloves, Sunglasses, Air Necklace, Mystic Melody

Rouge | Pick Nails, Treasure Scope, Iron Boots, Mystic Melody

Tails | Booster, Bazooka, Laser Blaster, Mystic Melody

Dr. Eggman | Jet Engine, Large Cannon, Laser Blaster, Protective Armor, Mystic Melody

If a mission seems impossible, you're probably missing an upgrade from a later stage.

Chao Garden Basics

The Chao Garden is a full virtual-pet mini-game. You reach it through Chao Keys found in stages or from Stage Select.

  • Stats: Swim, Fly, Run, Power and Stamina grow when you give Chao small animals and Chaos Drives collected in stages.
  • Alignment: Chao petted or raised mostly by Hero characters lean Hero, and Chao raised by Dark characters lean Dark. That affects how they look when they evolve.
  • Evolution: the first evolution happens after a while. The form depends on alignment and on which stats and animal parts you've fed it.
  • Gardens: the Neutral garden is open from the start. The Hero and Dark gardens unlock as you progress.
  • Activities: Chao Races, the Chao Kindergarten (a doctor, a classroom and a shop for buying items with rings), and Chao Karate if you own the Battle DLC.
  • Care: pet your Chao, feed it fruit and don't mistreat it. Chao remember how they're treated.

Quick training loop: replay a short stage with lots of enemies, like City Escape or Green Forest, to farm animals and drives, then give them to your Chao. Pick drives that match the stat you want.

Achievements

The Steam version has 15 achievements. Several overlap with emblem hunting, so plan them together:

Achievement | Requirement | Tip

Hello World | Clear stage 1 on either side in Story Mode | Automatic

HERO! / DARK! | Clear the Hero / Dark side in Story Mode | Automatic

Beyond Good And Evil | Clear the Last story | Finish both sides first

Chao! | Name your Chao for the first time | Name one in the garden early

Chao Raiser | Raise all 5 stats of one Chao to level 10 | Farm animals and Chaos Drives in enemy-heavy stages

Heaven or Hell | Raise a Hero Chao with hero characters and a Dark Chao with dark characters | Keep one Chao handled only by Hero characters and another only by Dark characters

Mission Complete | All 5 A ranks in any one stage | City Escape or another stage you know well

You Are The Legend | A rank in all stages in Story Mode | The long grind; save for last

Emblem Collector / Emblem Mania | 90 / all 180 emblems | Mania also unlocks Green Hill

Speedy Racer | Win first place at Expert level in the kart race | Practise the kart handling in Route 101/280 first

Boss Attack | Clear all 3 Boss Attack modes | Bosses reward knowing each pattern; practise from Stage Select

Karate Master | Beat every opponent at Super Level in Chao Karate 1P | Chao Karate requires the Battle DLC; train Power and Stamina

Level 4! | Play all level 4 stages in Action Race, Treasure Hunter and Shooting Battle | A two-player/battle-mode task

PC Fixes and Mods

The Steam port has known issues: lower-quality rendering compared with the original, cutscene and aspect-ratio quirks, and awkward default controls. The community standard is:

  • SA Mod Manager (github.com/X-Hax/SA-Mod-Manager). It supports both SADX and SA2 on PC and replaces the older SA2 Mod Loader. Download it, extract it anywhere, run SAModManager.exe, and it detects the game and installs the loader. Per its README (checked September 2026) it needs Windows 10 or later, the .NET 10.0 x64 Desktop Runtime and the 32-bit Visual C++ Redistributable.
  • Graphics and input fix mods from the manager's list or GameBanana. Rendering fixes restore effects from the original release, and input mods fix controller and camera handling.
  • Keep a clean backup of your save before modding.

Controller: a pad is strongly recommended. Rebind in the launcher or use Steam Input.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hunting Lost Chao without the Mystic Melody. Get each character's melody first.
  • Mashing single targets in mech stages. Lock-on chains are where the score comes from.
  • Reading every hint in hunting stages. Hints cost points. Learn where pieces spawn.
  • Skipping the Last story. It only unlocks after both Hero and Dark are finished, and it's the real ending.
  • Using Chaos Drives randomly. Give drives that match your training goal.
  • Playing the port unmodded if it bothers you. The mod manager fixes a lot in a few minutes.

Advanced Tips

  • Speed-stage A ranks: learn the trick ramps and grind lines. Tricks give big score bonuses. Light Dash shortcuts save time.
  • Mech-stage A ranks: hold lock-on through whole groups of enemies and boxes. Waiting a moment to link a larger chain often beats firing early.
  • Hunting A ranks: emerald piece positions come from a set of possible spots per stage, so learning those spots is the key to fast times.
  • Cannon's Core: each segment uses a different character, so practise it on its own from Stage Select.
  • Green Hill: 180 emblems unlocks it, so treat it as your completion reward.

FAQ

How do I unlock the Last story? Finish both the Hero and Dark stories.

How do I unlock Green Hill? Collect all 180 emblems.

Is the Battle DLC worth it? It adds six extra characters, 21 two-player battle maps and Chao Karate. It's cheap, and you need it for Chao Karate and the Karate Master achievement. Skip it only if you never play 2P and don't care about Karate.

What does Emblem Mania need? All 180 emblems, which also unlocks Green Hill. Expect to replay every stage's missions, plus kart races, Boss Attack and Chao races.

Can I play two-player on PC? Yes, the 2P modes work locally with two controllers.

Where do I get Chao? Eggs are in the Chao Garden, and more can be found or bought in the Kindergarten shop.

What mod manager should I use? The SA Mod Manager (X-Hax), which supports SA2 and replaced the older loader.
