A guide to Red Dead Redemption 2's story mode (chapter outline, systems, missables, and 100% tips) plus a starter's guide to Red Dead Online: roles, money, Gold Bars, and the current monthly event.
Researched September 2026 — story mode is feature-complete. Red Dead Online is current as of the September 1 to October 5, 2026 Moonshiner monthly event. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Take your time in Chapter 2. The world opens up there. Hunt, fish, do Strangers missions, and upgrade camp before the story starts moving faster.
- Bond with your horse. Brush, feed, and pat it. Higher bond improves stamina, handling, and unlocks tricks.
- Keep your cores up. Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye each have a core that drains over time. Eat, sleep, and use tonics to refill them.
- Honor matters. Good actions raise Honor, bad ones lower it. It changes shop discounts, some dialogue, and the ending.
- Donate to the camp ledger and buy upgrades. Pearson's provisions, Arthur's lodging, and the fast travel map in Arthur's tent are the key upgrades.
- Clean your guns. Dirty guns lose damage and accuracy. Use Gun Oil.
- Use your satchel and horse saddlebags for carcasses and pelts. Perfect-quality pelts are worth far more, so use the right weapon for the animal.
- Fast travel takes a while to unlock. Buy the camp map upgrade, and use trains and stagecoaches in the meantime.
- For Red Dead Online: Buy the Collector or Bounty Hunter role first, do daily challenges, and use this month's triple-reward bonuses.
Core Systems (Story Mode)
Cores and bars
Core | Refill with
Health | Food, tonics, sleep
Stamina | Food, tonics, rest
Dead Eye | Tobacco, Dead Eye tonics, sleep
The bars (outer rings) grow as you use the related actions. Health grows from taking damage and recovering, Stamina from running and swimming, and Dead Eye from using Dead Eye.
Dead Eye
Dead Eye slows time so you can mark targets. It gets better as the story goes on, with more options unlocked by chapter progress.
Horse bonding
Bond goes from level 1 to 4. Each level improves your horse's health, stamina, and handling, and unlocks new tricks such as rearing and skid turns. You can see what's unlocked on the horse's stats page. Reaching level 4 unlocks the "Best Buddies" achievement.
Horses keep their bond when you stable them. If a horse dies, you lose the bond with it.
Honor
- Raise it: Help strangers in random encounters, spare people instead of killing them, donate to camp, and make the honorable choice in certain Stranger missions.
- Lower it: Murdering innocents or lawmen, robbing people, animal cruelty, and dishonorable choices in missions.
- High Honor gives shop discounts and some unique cutscenes and outcomes, and it affects the ending.
Hunting
- Use the right weapon: Small game with a Varmint Rifle or a bow with Small Game Arrows. Medium game with a bow or Springfield. Large game with a Rolling Block or Springfield.
- Headshots and clean kills give perfect pelts.
- Legendary Animals are spread across the map. Their pelts make unique Trapper outfits. Start in Chapter 2.
- Legend of the East Satchel (from Pearson) holds more items and is the goal of many satchel upgrades. It needs pelts from each satchel recipe.
Weapons
Upgrade at gunsmiths. Standout weapons:
- Schofield Revolver and Lancaster Repeater: great mid-game combination
- Bolt Action Rifle and Springfield Rifle: reliable long guns
- Semi-Automatic Shotgun: excellent close-range weapon
- Rolling Block Rifle: best early sniper for hunting
Chapter Outline
Chapter | Hub / camp | Highlights
1: Colter | Mountains (snow) | Tutorial chapter that introduces the gang, hunting, and horses
2: Horseshoe Overlook | Near Valentine | The open world begins. Strangers, hunting, fishing, and camp upgrades.
3: Clemens Point | Near Rhodes | The Grays and Braithwaites feud
4: Shady Belle | Saint Denis | City missions and the big bank job
5: Guarma | Guarma (island) | Short, linear chapter. You can't return to Guarma after it.
6: Beaver Hollow | Near Annesburg | The gang falls apart. Arthur's final arc.
Epilogue 1: Pronghorn Ranch | Big Valley, West Elizabeth | John's new life begins
Epilogue 2: Beecher's Hope | Near Blackwater | John builds a home. Blackwater and New Austin (the desert region to the southwest) are fully open.
Missables and 100% Tips
- Guarma is one-way. Anything you want there (animals for the Compendium, fish) must be done during Chapter 5.
- Finish Arthur's Stranger missions before Chapter 6 ends. Some are Arthur-only and can't be completed with John.
- Legendary animals and fish can be done in the epilogue, but do Arthur's to get his Trapper outfits.
- Collectibles (cigarette cards, dinosaur bones, dreamcatchers, rock carvings) are available to John in the epilogue.
- Camp activities (dominoes, chores, songs) are only available while the camp exists.
- Arthur's horse and many items don't carry over to John.
- Gold medals: Replay missions from the Progress menu to earn gold medals.
- Achievements to plan for: "Best Buddies" (horse bond 4), "Zoologist" (study all animals), and gold medal achievements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing the story. Chapter 2 is the best time to explore, and Chapter 6 changes the camp's mood and options.
- Ignoring the camp. Donating early unlocks fast travel and better supplies.
- Hunting with the wrong weapon and ruining pelts.
- Letting your horse die. Carry Horse Reviver.
- Dirty weapons. Keep them oiled.
- Carrying too much bounty. Pay off bounties at post offices to stop lawmen hunting you.
Advanced Tips
- Use the catalogue to buy clothing and gear from any general store.
- Craft ammo at your camp or on the go for special types (Express, High Velocity, Split Point).
- Special Miracle Tonic fills all cores and fortifies them.
- Rob trains and stagecoaches carefully, as they raise your bounty and lower your Honor.
- Fence stolen goods at fences (Emerald Ranch, Saint Denis, and others).
- Deliver hunting requests to trappers and butchers for extra money.
Red Dead Online Basics
Red Dead Online is the multiplayer mode, also sold as a standalone game. You make your own character, pick missions, and work up through roles.
Currencies
Currency | Used for
RDO$ (cash) | Weapons, clothing, ammo, horses, supplies
Gold Bars | Role licenses, premium items, some horses and camp upgrades
Capitale | Currency from the Blood Money content, used for Crimes
Roles
Role | How it pays | Notes
Collector | Find collectibles and sell sets to Madam Nazar | Strong for RDO$ and XP
Bounty Hunter | Capture bounties alive for more pay | Best for Gold Bars early
Trader | Supply Cripps with pelts and carcasses, deliver goods | Passive money with camp upgrades
Moonshiner | Brew and sell moonshine from a shack | Requires the shack. Weak at low rank but good later.
Naturalist | Sedate and sample animals, and sell samples to Harriet | Slow money. Unlocks the Wilderness Camp.
Role license costs vary. A guide we checked lists 15 Gold Bars for the Collector, Trader, and Bounty Hunter licenses, but Rockstar changes prices and runs discounts, so check the in-game catalogue.
Money and Gold tips
- Do daily challenges for Gold Bars and streak rewards.
- Telegraph missions and Bounty Hunter missions pay well during bonus months.
- Collector: Selling full sets of collectibles to Madam Nazar is reliable income.
- Trader: Keep the camp materials meter topped up with carcasses so Cripps produces goods.
September 2026 event: Moonshiner triple rewards (September 1 to October 5)
- 3x RDO$, 3x Role XP, and 3x XP on Moonshiner Sales and Moonshiner Story Missions
- 3x RDO$ and XP on Free Roam Missions and the Featured Series
- Weekly Moonshiner Sale rewards (complete a sale in that week):
Week | Reward
Sept 1–7 | Ta-Da emote
Sept 8–14 | This Guy emote
Sept 15–21 | Black Woodland Gloves
Sept 22–28 | Blue Plaid Cap
Sept 29–Oct 5 | Black Winter Shotgun Coat
- Rank 50 and higher: Get the Zapatero Outfit and Golden Spirit Buckle for playing any time this month.
- Other monthlong rewards: complete three Daily Challenges for the black and red Carbow Double Bandolier; win a Featured Series match for the tan Porter Jacket.
- Discounts: free Moonshine Shack relocation, 50% off the bar expansion, 40% off role outfits, Norfolk Roadsters and Arabians, and 50% off Repeaters.
If you already own Moonshiner, this is the best time of year to rank it up. If you don't, it's still an expensive role to buy and slow early, so a newer player is better off starting with Collector or Bounty Hunter.
Red Dead Online starter path
- Finish the opening missions and the first story arcs.
- Buy Collector or Bounty Hunter first, then Trader for passive income.
- Buy the Moonshiner shack once you have spare Gold and can grind during a bonus event.
- Upgrade your horse and weapons when you can: a better horse and a repeater or rifle.
- Do daily challenges every day.
FAQ
How long is the story? Most players take roughly 50 to 60 hours for the story. A 100% run takes much longer.
Can I miss anything permanently? Yes. Guarma content (Chapter 5), some of Arthur's Stranger missions, and camp activities are missable. Most collectibles can still be done in the epilogue.
How do I get perfect pelts? Use the right weapon for the animal's size and go for clean headshots. Study the animal with binoculars first to check its quality.
What's the best Red Dead Online role for beginners? Collector for money and XP, or Bounty Hunter for Gold Bars.
Is Red Dead Online still getting updates? Yes, but mostly monthly events, bonuses, and returning rewards rather than big new content. September 2026 is a Moonshiner triple-rewards event.
Does Honor affect the ending? Yes. Arthur's Honor changes some ending scenes and outcomes.
