How the flag, ticket, FOB and rally systems work in Operation: Harsh Doorstop (OHD) as of the 0.14.2.x builds, what each role should do, and how to get the most out of the free-to-play sandbox, its mods and its supporter DLC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Hotfix v0.14.2.1 (8 August 2025), the latest public build; the Armored Warfare update is in supporter-only closed playtests (teased February 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- It's free and in Early Access. Drakeling Labs (led by Connor "Bluedrake42") is building a spiritual successor to Project Reality. It's rough in places and teamwork-heavy by design.
- Join a squad and stay near it. Squads spawn on their squad leader's rally points and build FOBs. Solo players are much weaker.
- Use local and squad voice. OHD has local, squad and command voice channels. Communication is the game.
- Understand the flag lanes. Maps are laid out as routes of flags. You fight over the next flag in the chain, not the whole map. Recent hotfixes gave several maps a single shared neutral flag per route.
- FOBs and rallies are the spawn network. Protect them, and destroy the enemy's.
- Mount your weapon. Resting on cover or deploying a bipod massively cuts recoil (details below).
- Revive teammates. The medical and revival system (added in 0.14.0.0) keeps your team's tickets and numbers up.
- Try modded servers. Steam Workshop mods add factions, weapons and whole game modes. Mods download when you join a modded server.
Game Status and Versions (2026)
Version | Date | Highlights
0.14.0.0 | 28 Feb 2025 | The big overhaul: bipod system, weapon mounting, construction system, vaulting, medical and revival, vehicles, new weapon audio, reworked characters and gear
0.14.1.0 | 26 Mar 2025 | Operation: Gothic Serpent (Somali Civil War) and Operation: Hyrcania (Eastern European conflict) DLC. Outposts now need two nearby team members (was squad). Fall damage softened
0.14.2.0 "Summer Relief" | 4 Jul 2025 | Gothic Serpent and Hyrcania factions made free base content. Specialist kits. FOBs take 4 rockets to destroy. Rally overrun radius doubled to 35 m. Sprint/ADS cancel improvements
0.14.2.1 hotfix | 8 Aug 2025 | FOBs not allowed inside capture zones by default. Team-switch cooldown (2 min default). Smarter autobalance. Spawn and flag fixes on Carentan, Jaziira, Khafji and Omaha
Armored Warfare update | Teaser Feb 2026, release "when it's ready" | Being playtested by supporters. A future World War mode is planned for supporters
As of late September 2026, the Steam Early Access note says the developers' last update was over 13 months ago. The store page states the game "will be free. Forever", that it will stay in Early Access "for as long as we need to be", and that the pace depends on community support.
Eras, Factions and DLC
OHD spans several eras: World War I, World War II, the Cold War/Vietnam era, and modern conflicts like the Middle East, Somalia and Eastern Europe. The paid "Operation" packs are supporter DLC:
DLC | Setting
Operation: Michael | World War I
Operation: Overlord | World War II
Operation: Rolling Stone | Vietnam War
Operation: Gothic Serpent | Somali Civil War (factions now free base content)
Operation: Hyrcania | Eastern European conflict (factions now free base content)
Pre-Order: World War | Pre-order for the planned World War mode
Upgrade to Supporter Edition | Supporter status: access to closed playtests and developer-build servers (per the December 2024 playtest post)
Per the February 2026 Armored Warfare teaser, buying supporter DLC gives access to the closed beta and all closed playtests, plus the upcoming World War mode.
You don't need any DLC to play the core game. DLC mainly supports development and gives playtest access.
Core Systems
Flags, routes and tickets
- Maps are divided into routes: a chain of flags from one team's base to the other's.
- You can only capture the next flag in the chain. Recent changes consolidated several maps (Carentan, Khafji, Jaziira) around a single neutral middle flag per route.
- Teams have tickets, which drop as players die and respawn. Some maps have asymmetric tickets (for example, BLUFOR tickets were doubled on Omaha).
- Spawn points per flag were spread out in 0.14.2.1 to reduce spawn camping.
Squads and roles
- Squad Leader: places rally points, orders FOBs, and coordinates with other squads over command voice. Autobalance no longer moves squad leaders.
- Riflemen and specialists: faction loadouts include specialist kits (added in Summer Relief). Machine gunners, marksmen, anti-tank and medics depend on the faction.
- Medics and everyone: the revival system means downed players can be picked up. Always look for a revive before a respawn.
Rally points
- Squad leaders place rallies close to the fight so the squad can respawn nearby.
- A rally is overrun when enemies are within 35 m (since Summer Relief), so place it behind cover and away from enemy approach lanes.
FOBs and construction
- FOBs are the team's main forward spawns and build hubs. They're built with the construction tool from supplies.
- Since 0.14.2.1, by default you can't build a FOB inside a capture zone (server owners can change this with HD.Construction.AllowBaseConstructionInCaptureZones).
- FOBs take 4 rockets to destroy, and digging down an enemy FOB is twice as fast as before.
- Build sandbags, barriers and fortifications around the FOB and on key flags. The dynamic fortification system is one of OHD's biggest strengths.
- Outposts need two nearby team members to build.
- Supply lines: logistics trucks carry supplies to FOBs. Without supplies, nothing gets built.
Weapon handling (0.14.0.0 values)
Situation | Recoil effect
Mounted, non-bipod weapon | Recoil reduced by 50%
Mounted with a bipod deployed | Recoil reduced by 85%
Passive mounting against cover (all weapons except machine guns) | 25% recoil reduction
Machine guns unmounted | Recoil increased
Takeaway: machine gunners must deploy bipods. Riflemen should lean against cover before engaging at range.
Movement
- Pressing sprint while prone, crouched, aiming or leaning cancels that state and starts a sprint. ADS while sprinting cancels the sprint.
- Vaulting over obstacles was smoothed in Summer Relief, including rubberbanding fixes on poor connections.
- Fall damage was softened in 0.14.1.0, but big drops still hurt.
Vehicles
Logistics trucks, transports and (depending on era and faction) armor. Drivers should treat trucks as the team's supply lifeline, not a taxi. The upcoming Armored Warfare update focuses on armor.
Role Playbook
Squad leader checklist
- Create or take a squad, then pick a flag objective with your command team.
- Drop a rally behind cover near the objective before the push.
- Ask for or build a FOB near, but not inside, the next flag.
- Call targets with compass bearings and landmarks.
- Rotate rallies as the front moves.
Rifleman
- Stick to your squad leader. A squad of five that moves together beats ten scattered players.
- Carry and use your medical tools. Revives save tickets.
- Help build fortifications when the squad leader asks.
Machine gunner
- Deploy your bipod and lock down a lane. You're the reason attackers can't cross open ground.
- Relocate after a few bursts. Machine guns attract every rifle and rocket on the map.
Anti-tank and demolition
- Priority targets: enemy FOBs (four rockets) and vehicles.
- Coordinate with a squad. A lone AT soldier rarely survives long enough to fire twice.
Logistics
- Keep FOBs supplied. The team with steady supplies has better fortifications and spawns.
Servers, Bots and Mods
- Multiplayer: the server browser shows official and community servers. Server owners can set rulesets, team balance and construction rules.
- Bots, co-op and single-player: play against or alongside bots when populations are low. Several bot target-acquisition bugs were fixed in 0.14.1.0.
- Steam Workshop: mods add factions, weapons, vehicles, modes and total conversions. A 0.14.2.0 fix addressed the "SteamUGCManager_Failed_LoadWorkshopItem" error on modded servers.
- Level editor: included for creators.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Lone-wolfing. You'll run out of ammo, have no spawns, and die to the first organized squad.
- Placing rallies in the open. Enemies within 35 m overrun them. Use cover and distance.
- Trying to build a FOB on the flag. Default rules block it inside capture zones. Build just outside.
- Firing machine guns without a bipod. Unmounted MG recoil went up deliberately.
- Respawning instead of waiting for a revive. It costs your team a ticket and time.
- Team hopping. There's now a 2-minute cooldown between team switches.
- Ignoring logistics. No supplies means no forts and no FOBs.
Advanced Tips
- Layer your spawns: keep one FOB near the front and one fallback FOB. Losing one then doesn't collapse the push.
- Dig enemy FOBs down while they're distracted. Digging is twice as fast now, and it's often quicker than getting four rockets.
- Command channel discipline: squad leaders should share flag status, FOB locations and armor sightings.
- Mount everywhere. Even the 25% passive reduction from leaning on cover makes mid-range rifle fights much more accurate.
- Server owners: use rulesets and the construction cvar to tune FOB rules for your community.
- Watch spawn timers and rotate early when the next flag in the route unlocks.
