A player-focused guide to Hogwarts Legacy: combat and spells, talents, gear, the Room of Requirement, collectibles, and story choices, plus current platform and update status.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the latest post-launch patch cycle (no DLC; mod support via the Creator Kit on PC). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Learn to block and counter. Protego blocks, and Stupefy counters to stun. Timing these makes combat much easier.
- Use spell sets. You unlock more spell sets as you progress; set up four spells per set for quick swaps.
- Pick talents that match your style. Talents unlock early in the main story (around level 5) and give you powerful passives. Talent resets are available (added in the June 6, 2024 update alongside photo mode).
- Complete Merlin Trials. Completing trials is the only way to expand gear inventory space; slots unlock at completion milestones rather than per trial. There are 95 in total, and you need Mallowsweet leaves to start each one.
- Upgrade gear with traits. The Enchanting Loom in the Room of Requirement adds traits to gear for extra stats.
- Do side quests for rewards. Many side quests unlock new spells, brooms, and mounts.
- Unlock the Room of Requirement early. It is essential for potions, plants, and gear upgrades.
- Collect Field Guide Pages. They reward XP and lore; use Revelio to find them.
- Get a broom as soon as you can. Flying makes exploration and collecting much faster.
Core Combat
Spell Types
Color | Spell type | Examples
Yellow | Control | Levioso, Glacius, Arresto Momentum, Transformation
Purple | Force | Accio, Depulso, Descendo, Flipendo
Red | Damage | Incendio, Confringo, Diffindo, Bombarda, Expelliarmus
Green | Unforgivable Curses | Crucio, Imperio, Avada Kedavra
Shield colors: Enemy shields are color-coded. Use the matching spell type to break shields.
Defensive tools
- Protego: blocks most attacks. Use it when the non-red spider-sense warning flashes over your head.
- Stupefy: counters and stuns enemies after a block.
- Dodge roll: avoids red unblockable attacks.
Ancient Magic
- Ancient Magic Throw uses objects around you as projectiles.
- Ancient Magic finishers deal heavy damage when the meter is full.
- Talents can increase Ancient Magic meter gain and power.
Talents
Talents unlock early in the main story and are split into five categories (some categories open later as you progress):
Category | Focus
Spells | Spell improvements (e.g., reduced cooldowns)
Dark Arts | Unforgivable Curse upgrades and dark magic synergies
Core | Health, Ancient Magic, and combat basics
Stealth | Disillusionment and stealth takedowns
Room of Requirement | Potions, plants, and crafting bonuses
Tips
- Early picks: Core talents that improve Ancient Magic and survivability.
- Stealth talents make sneaking and Petrificus Totalus takedowns much stronger.
- Dark Arts talents are powerful if you use Unforgivable Curses.
Gear and Traits
- Gear slots: head, face, neck, back, hands, and outfit.
- Traits come from quests and challenges, and are added at the Enchanting Loom in the Room of Requirement.
- Upgrading gear uses beast byproducts (fur, feathers, horns and similar) collected by feeding and brushing beasts in your Vivarium; upgraded slots allow more traits.
- Inventory space increases by completing Merlin Trials.
- Money: sell surplus gear to vendors (Gladrags Wizardwear in Hogsmeade is the classic stop) rather than destroying it; gold funds seeds, potion ingredients, and the Room of Requirement conjurations you want.
- Transmog freely: the appearance of any gear piece you have collected can be applied over your current stats, so wear the stats you need and the look you want.
Room of Requirement and Vivarium
- Unlocked during the main story.
- Potion Station: craft Wiggenweld, Edurus, Maxima, Focus, and more.
- Potting Table: grow combat plants (Mandrake, Venomous Tentacula, Chinese Chomping Cabbage).
- Vivarium: house and breed creatures to collect materials for gear upgrades.
- Enchanting Loom: add traits to gear.
Collectibles
Collectible | Count | How to find
Merlin Trials | 95 | Look for Merlin Trial stones; complete puzzles
Demiguise Statues | 33 | Collect at night; unlock Alohomora upgrades
Daedalian Keys | 16 | Chase flying keys around Hogwarts
Field Guide Pages | 150 | Use Revelio and explore
Tips
- Demiguise Statues unlock higher levels of Alohomora from Gladwin Moon.
- Daedalian Keys unlock house cabinets with gear rewards.
- Field Guide Pages give lore and XP.
Story Progression Outline
Spoiler-light roadmap of the main quest beats so you know when systems open up. Your character's level cap is 40.
- Prologue – The Path to Hogwarts. Tutorial combat with Professor Fig and your first glimpse of Ancient Magic.
- Welcome to Hogwarts and the first classes. Classes (Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, Flying, Beasts) each teach a spell, tool, or feature. Prioritize class assignments: they are how you unlock most spells.
- Hogsmeade and early exploration. You gain access to shops, the wider world, and side quests. Buy a broom as soon as your flying class allows it.
- The Map Chamber and the Keepers' trials. The main questline sends you through a series of trials tied to the ancient Keepers, including Percival Rackham's Trial, Charles Rookwood's Trial, Niamh Fitzgerald's Trial, and San Bakar's Trial. Each trial is a mix of puzzle rooms and a memory.
- Mid-game expansion. The Room of Requirement, Vivarium, beast rescue with the Nab-Sack, and mounts (Highwing) all come online. This is the best time to clear world content and upgrade gear.
- Endgame – The Final Repository. The last main quest; make sure you have done any side content you care about first, although you can keep playing after the credits.
Enemy factions to know
- Ashwinders – dark wizards serving Rookwood. Use shield-breaking spells and crowd control.
- Goblins (Ranrok's loyalists) – include armored and warrior types; stay mobile and use Ancient Magic on big groups.
- Poachers – often in camps with beasts; stealth takedowns thin them out.
- Inferi and dark creatures – Incendio and fire-based spells are very effective against Inferi.
Story and Companions
- The main story follows your student as they uncover Ancient Magic and fight Ranrok and Victor Rookwood.
- Companion quests (Sebastian Sallow, Natsai Onai, Poppy Sweeting) add major story beats and rewards.
- Unforgivable Curses are learned through Sebastian's questline.
Missable or choice-dependent content
- Sebastian's questline has choices that change outcomes for key characters.
- The final repository choice impacts the ending dialogue.
- Some side quests are tied to story progression; complete them when available to avoid confusion.
Exploration and Travel
- Brooms: unlocked through Madam Kogawa's flying class and the broom shop in Hogsmeade.
- Mounts: Highwing (hippogriff) and a Graphorn unlock via story or companion quests.
- Floo Flames: fast travel points across the world.
Difficulty and Combat Tips
- Story/Easy: focus on narrative.
- Normal: balanced; use combos.
- Hard: enemies hit harder; use potions and plants.
Combat tips
- Chain control spells into damage spells for combos.
- Use Ancient Magic for groups or tough enemies.
- Break shields with the right spell color before attacking.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring Merlin Trials. You need them for inventory space.
- Skipping Room of Requirement upgrades. Potions and plants are key in combat.
- Not using Protego. Blocking is the best defense.
- Wasting talent points. Pick talents that fit your spells and playstyle.
- Ignoring Revelio. It reveals collectibles and hidden objects.
Advanced Tips
- Use stealth to thin enemy groups. Disillusionment and Petrificus Totalus are strong early.
- Combine Confringo and Incendio for burn damage.
- Use Arresto Momentum to set up combos.
- Keep spell sets organized by role. One set for control, one for damage, one for Unforgivables.
- Farm materials in the Vivarium. Upgrade gear faster.
