Everything you need to enjoy Fallout 2 in 2026: running it on a modern PC, building a Chosen One who does not die in the Temple of Trials, a sensible route across the wasteland, companions, and the mistakes that end runs.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (1998 game, no further official patches). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Fallout 2 is turn-based and brutally open. You can walk anywhere from the start, which also means you can walk into places that kill you in one turn. Save often, in multiple slots.
- Tag three skills and commit. A good default is one combat skill (Small Guns), Speech, and one utility (Lockpick, Science or Repair).
- Agility and Perception matter most early. Agility drives Action Points; Perception drives ranged accuracy and sequence.
- Do not neglect Intelligence. It sets how many skill points you get per level and unlocks many dialogue options.
- The Temple of Trials is the hardest part of the opening. You can talk your way past the final test instead of fighting.
- Klamath then The Den is the natural early route. Vault City and Modoc follow.
- Get a car. The Highwayman in The Den makes world travel dramatically faster and adds trunk storage.
- Companions are powerful but dumb. Set their combat behaviour and never hand them a burst weapon in tight spaces.
- Install community fixes. The vanilla game has quest-breaking bugs; the Unofficial Patch or Restoration Project plus a high-resolution patch are the standard setup.
- Keep an eye on reputation and karma. Titles such as slaver or childkiller permanently change how towns react to you.
Running Fallout 2 on a Modern PC
The Steam release is the original game. The community standard setup:
Tool | Purpose
Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch (killap) | Fixes hundreds of script and quest bugs without adding cut content
Fallout 2 Restoration Project (killap) | The Unofficial Patch plus restored cut content and locations; optional installer choices
sfall | Engine extension: bug fixes, higher resolutions, quality-of-life options; bundled with the patches above
High Resolution Patch | Runs the game at modern resolutions with larger visible map areas
Fallout 2 Community Edition (fallout2-ce) | Open-source re-implementation of the engine; uses your original game data
Pick either the Unofficial Patch (closer to vanilla) or the Restoration Project (more content) — not both. Install fixes into a copy of the game folder so you can revert.
Character Creation
S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
You have 40 points to spread across seven stats, each from 1 to 10.
Stat | Governs | Recommended
Strength | Carry weight, melee damage, weapon strength requirements | 5–6 for gunners (power armor adds more later)
Perception | Ranged accuracy at distance, sequence, spotting traps | 7–8 for gunners
Endurance | HP, HP per level, resistances | 4–6
Charisma | Companion limit, reactions, prices | 2–4 unless diplomat (then 6+)
Intelligence | Skill points per level, dialogue | 7–9
Agility | Action Points, Armor Class | 8–10
Luck | Criticals and random encounters | 6–8
A proven starting spread for a gunslinger: ST 5, PE 8, EN 5, CH 3, IN 8, AG 9, LK 2 (then take Gifted, see below). Raise Luck if you want more special encounters and criticals.
Traits (pick up to two)
- Gifted — +1 to every stat, but fewer skill points per level and a skill penalty. The most popular pick.
- Fast Shot — every ranged attack costs 1 fewer AP but you cannot make aimed (called) shots. Strong for burst/sniper hybrids.
- Finesse — more criticals, lower damage overall.
- Small Frame — +1 Agility, lower carry weight.
- Bloody Mess — purely cosmetic (death animations are always gory).
- Skilled — more skill points, fewer perks.
- Avoid Jinxed unless you want chaos for everyone, including you.
Skills worth tagging
Skill | Why
Small Guns | Carries you from the Temple to the late game
Energy Weapons | Late-game damage (plasma, pulse, laser)
Speech | Opens the best quest outcomes and can end the final confrontation differently
Lockpick/Steal | Loot and some quest shortcuts
Science/Repair | Computers, repairing machines, several key quests (and fixing the car)
Doctor/First Aid | Limb healing and saves on stimpaks
Perks to plan for
You get a perk every three levels (every four with Skilled). Strong picks: Awareness (see enemy HP/weapons), Bonus Rate of Fire, Better Criticals, Sniper, Action Boy (extra AP), Bonus Move, Toughness, Living Anatomy, Slayer for melee characters, and Tag! for a fourth tagged skill.
Combat Essentials
- Every action costs Action Points. Moving 1 hex = 1 AP; attacks usually 4–6. Leftover AP adds to Armor Class for the enemy turn.
- Aimed shots at the eyes are the classic high-crit play; groin and head shots can knock down or blind.
- Burst fire hits everything in the cone — including companions and yourself in close quarters.
- Sequence (from Perception) decides who acts first. High sequence plus a first strike wins many fights.
- Use cover (walls, doorways) and let enemies walk to you.
Suggested Route
This is a common, low-risk order. Almost everything can be done differently.
Order | Location | Highlights
1 | Arroyo / Temple of Trials | Tutorial dungeon. Talk your way through the final fight if Speech is good
2 | Klamath | Early quests, the Toxic Caves (rescue Smiley), recruit Sulik
3 | The Den | Rough town; recruit Vic; get the car (you need a fuel cell controller for it)
4 | Modoc | The Ghost Farm quest; wedding shotgun risk if you get too friendly
5 | Vault City | Citizenship quests, Cassidy, doctor services
6 | Gecko | Ghoul town with the reactor; Lenny once accepted; parts for the car
7 | Broken Hills | Mixed-race town, Marcus, uranium mine
8 | New Reno | Four crime families (Mordino, Salvatore, Wright, Bishop), boxing, Myron at the Stables
9 | Redding | Mining town; the Great Wanamingo Mine
10 | NCR / Vault 15 | Politics and a key lead toward Vault 13
11 | Vault 13 | The goal of the early game: the G.E.C.K. and the intelligent Deathclaws (Goris can join)
12 | San Francisco | The Shi, Hubologists, Brotherhood of Steel; the PMV Valdez tanker
13 | Navarro | Enclave base; advanced power armor and K-9
14 | Control Station ENCLAVE | The oil rig finale; President Richardson and Frank Horrigan
Optional heavy hitters: Sierra Army Depot (and Skynet), Mariposa Military Base, Vault 8 below Vault City.
Companions
Companion | Where | How
Sulik | Klamath | Pay his debt or rescue Smiley/Torr
Vic | The Den | Free him from Metzger's debt, or kill Metzger
Cassidy | Vault City | Ask him to join
Lenny | Gecko | Reach "Accepted" reputation
Marcus | Broken Hills | Ask after finishing certain town quests
Myron | New Reno Stables | Ask him to join
Goris | Vault 13 | Ask him to join
K-9 | Navarro | Kill Schreber and repair K-9
Skynet | Sierra Army Depot | Assemble a body for it
Dogmeat | Café of Broken Dreams (special encounter) | Show a Vault jumpsuit or feed him
Davin / Miria | Modoc | Via the shotgun wedding
Robodog | NCR | Via Dr. Henry's mutagen test
Pariah Dog | Random encounter | Joins if you fail a Luck check on the encounter map
Your Charisma limits how many followers you can have at once.
Companion tips:
- Set their combat behaviour, preferred distance and weapon permissions in dialogue.
- Give Sulik and Marcus melee or single-shot weapons; burst weapons on AI allies cause friendly fire.
- Companions level up over time; Marcus and Cassidy end up as tanks/marksmen.
Money and Gear
- Early weapons: the 10mm SMG and hunting rifle are good. The Red Ryder LE BB Gun is an easy-to-miss high-crit weapon.
- Armor progression: leather armor to metal armor to combat armor to power armor. Advanced Power Armor from Navarro is the endgame goal.
- Money: gambling and boxing in New Reno, scrap and loot resale, and quest rewards. Keep Barter moderate or bring Charisma companions.
- Car trunk = free storage. Park it outside dangerous towns.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Single save slot. Scripts break, you get stuck, or a random encounter spawns you in a deathtrap. Rotate at least three saves.
- Skipping Intelligence. Low Intelligence locks out dialogue and slows skill growth.
- Tagging too many combat skills. One weapon skill is enough; Speech/Science/Repair open more of the game.
- Burst weapons in narrow corridors with companions in the line of fire.
- Killing children, even accidentally with bursts, earns the Childkiller reputation and turns some towns hostile.
- Enslaving people in The Den or selling companions — permanent slaver reputation.
- Entering the Sierra Army Depot or Navarro too early. Turrets and patrols shred a mid-level character.
- Not installing fixes. Several vanilla quests can break permanently.
Advanced Tips
- Aimed eye shots with high-damage rifles (sniper rifle, gauss weapons) end fights instantly once Better Criticals is in.
- Sneak before combat to position, then open fire for a free first volley.
- Science on computers unlocks many quest shortcuts; Repair is needed for machines and the car.
- Special encounters show up more with high Luck. They include some unique items and jokes.
- Chems: Buffout and Mentats are strong for tough fights, but addiction penalties are real. Save before experimenting.
- Speech solutions exist for many boss-style confrontations, including parts of the ending.
- Restoration Project adds content back — expect some locations and quests you will not find in vanilla guides.
FAQ
Is there a time limit in Fallout 2? There is no short deadline like Fallout 1's water chip. You can keep playing after the ending, but the game world has an overall cap of roughly thirteen in-game years, which normal playthroughs never approach.
Unofficial Patch or Restoration Project? Unofficial Patch if you want the classic experience with fixes; Restoration Project if you want restored cut content. Do not install both.
How do I get the car? It is in The Den. You need a fuel cell controller (from Gecko's junkyard area) and to deal with the owner, then fuel it with microfusion cells or small energy cells.
What is the best build for a first run? High Agility, decent Perception and Intelligence, Gifted plus Fast Shot or Small Frame, Small Guns plus Speech plus Science or Lockpick.
Can I play Fallout 2 without playing Fallout 1? Yes. The story stands on its own, set 80 years after the first game.
How do I run it widescreen? Use the High Resolution Patch (bundled with the fan patches) or Fallout 2 Community Edition.
