How to survive the Shroud, which survivors to rescue first, how the Flame Altar gates your progress, build and combat tips for Warrior, Ranger and Wizard play, and what the 1.0 release on October 15, 2026 is changing.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Early Access version 0.9.1.2 (Hotfix #42), ahead of the 1.0 release on October 15, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- The Flame Altar is your progression. Upgrading the Flame increases your build radius, Shroud survival time and grants attribute bonuses. Upgrading it should always be a priority.
- Rescue survivors early. The five craftspeople (Blacksmith, Alchemist, Carpenter, Hunter, Farmer) unlock almost every crafting station and recipe. Each has their own Ancient Vault to find.
- Watch the Shroud timer. Inside the Shroud you have a limited time before dying. Each Flame level adds a minute.
- Destroy Shroud Roots. They are the big glowing corrupted roots inside the Shroud and are key objectives for progression and loot.
- Build a base where you want to live long term, but know you can place several Flame Altars and move later.
- Sleep and eat buffs. Resting at a bed plus food buffs boosts health, stamina and regeneration. Eat different food types for stacking buffs.
- Use the glider and grappling hook as soon as they are available. Exploration is dramatically faster.
- Play co-op if you can. Up to 16 players can share a world.
- Treat skill points as a plan, not a spread. The skill tree rewards specializing into one or two paths.
- Know the price. The price rose by €10 to €39.99 (or local equivalent) on September 8, 2026, ahead of 1.0; watch for Steam sales.
What 1.0 Is Changing (Announced So Far)
Keen Games is releasing 1.0 on October 15, 2026, leaving Early Access, with a PS5 version shown at Gamescom. Announced changes:
- Performance work targeting lower and mid-range PCs.
- Mage rework: 9 new spells, including Mana Drain, Entangle, Pillar of Flames, Blizzard, Ball Lightning, and summons: Summon Fire Totem, Summon Ice Totem, Summon Shock Totem, Summon Hollow Skeleton. New skill tree nodes increase the number of totems and skeletons you can summon. Enemy weaknesses are being reworked and spells scale over a wider level range.
- Quality-of-life changes to existing systems and a dragon boss fight mentioned by developers.
Full 1.0 changelogs will be published at release; expect some numbers and recipes in this guide to shift.
Core Systems
The Shroud
- The Shroud is a toxic fog covering lowlands and ruins. You have a Shroud timer while inside. When it runs out, you die.
- Shroud areas have a level gate tied to your Flame level; higher Flame levels unlock passage into deeper Shroud areas.
- Inside the Shroud, enemies (the Fell) are tougher and loot is better.
- Shroud Roots are corrupted objectives; destroying them gives major rewards.
The Flame Altar
What it controls | How it scales
Build radius | Grows from 40x40x40 at Level 1 up to 160x160x160 at Level 4, then stays at max
Shroud time | +1 minute per level (about 6 minutes at Level 2 up to 13 at Level 9)
Attribute bonus | +1 character attributes per level from Level 2
Active altars | 4 at Level 2, rising to the world maximum of 10 at Level 7
Water sources | Base water capacity grows from 1 (Level 2) to 50 (Level 9)
Shroud passage | Access to higher-level Shroud areas
The Flame has 9 levels. Early upgrades need Shroud Cores (1 for Level 2, 5 for Level 3) and then 5 Shroud Nexus for Level 4; from Level 5 on, each upgrade needs a count of rescued survivors plus Spark (6 survivors and 20 Spark for Level 5, rising to 14 survivors and 60 Spark for Level 9). The Flame level is global and never decreases, even if you extinguish every altar.
Survivors
Survivor | Role | Unlocks
Oswald Anders | Blacksmith | Melee weapons and armor, forges
Balthazar | Alchemist | Magic armor, potions, alchemy stations
Cade Hawthorn | Carpenter | Wood decorations, kilns and building items
Athalan Skree | Hunter | Ranged armor, arrows, survival gear
Emily Fray | Farmer | Food, farming, animal husbandry
Each of the five is found in their own Ancient Vault. Place them in your base (inside a building with a bed and the right comfort) to use their crafting menu.
Specialists: Alden Crowley (Collector, Springlands Hollow Halls), Valory (Bard, Sunken Ancient City), Elio Ricci (Barber, near the Ring of Rot), Captain Melville Fontane (Fisher, Ol' Captain's Rest). There are also seven Assistants that duplicate a craftsperson's recipes (e.g. Rochelle Anders, Blacksmith Assistant, at Fanning Ranch; Lady LeClair, Alchemist Assistant, at Glennwood's End). Rescued survivors also count toward Flame upgrades from Level 5, so rescue them all.
Recommended rescue order: Blacksmith first (tools and weapons), then Hunter (arrows, survival gear), Alchemist (potions), Farmer (food), Carpenter (base decor and production).
Biomes (Early Access)
Biome | Notes
Springlands | Starting area; gentle difficulty
Revelwood | Forests; mid-early zone
Nomad Highlands | Mid game
Kindlewastes | Sun-scorched desert
Albaneve Summits | Snowy mountains; needs cold protection
Veilwater Basin | Water-themed later region
Follow roughly this order; enemies and materials scale by region.
Combat and Builds
Enshrouded's skill tree lets you mix freely, but committing to one archetype makes you much stronger.
Archetype | Weapons | Key stats | Play style
Warrior / Tank | One-handed sword or axe plus shield, or two-handed weapons | Strength, Constitution | Block and parry, stagger enemies, frontline in co-op
Ranger | Bows, daggers | Dexterity | Headshots, stealth attacks, kiting
Wizard | Wands, staffs, spells | Intelligence, Spirit | Elemental damage, crowd control; summons coming in 1.0
Healer / Support | Healing staff, wands | Spirit | Keeps co-op groups alive
Combat tips
- Parry incoming melee with good timing to open enemies up.
- Stagger bars: hitting enemies repeatedly fills a stagger meter for big critical hits.
- Dodge rolls cost stamina; do not empty it in the middle of a fight.
- Match elements to weakness. Fell enemies have elemental weaknesses; the 1.0 mage rework is reworking these.
- Pull enemies out of groups; Shroud fights with multiple elites drain your timer and potions.
Base Building
- Voxel building lets you dig terrain and build anything. Start with a simple shelter: walls, roof, bed and crafting stations.
- Comfort matters: placing furniture and decorations raises your Rested buff duration.
- Keep storage chests next to stations; many stations can pull materials from nearby chests.
- Plan a farm early for food buffs, and later animal pens.
- Multiple altars let you have outposts in different biomes (fast travel via flame and ancient spires).
Gathering and Crafting Essentials
- Early tools: Pickaxe for mining, Axe for felling trees. Upgrade to better tiers with the Blacksmith.
- Copper and Tin make bronze; iron and later metals come in harder biomes.
- Charcoal (kiln) is a staple for smelting.
- Shroud Cores, Shroud Nexus and Spark are the Flame upgrade materials; they come from clearing Shroud objectives such as Shroud Roots and from exploration.
- Mushrooms and plants for alchemy and food; farm them later.
- Keep a stack of Healing Potions and Shroud Time extensions (via Flame upgrades and some items) before any Shroud dive.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wandering deep into the Shroud without watching the timer.
- Skipping Flame upgrades and then finding your build radius or Shroud time too small.
- Spreading skill points across everything.
- Forgetting to place rescued survivors in your base.
- Not placing a bed and comfort items, missing the Rested buff.
- Building in a spot with no easy access to water and flat ground.
- Leaving a co-op world where only the host can progress; plan with your group who hosts.
Advanced Tips
- Glider routes: Climb ancient spires and towers to glide long distances.
- Grappling points open shortcuts in ruins.
- Food stacking: Eat three different food types for maximum buffs.
- Dedicated servers keep co-op worlds available when the host is offline; they did not need updates for the latest hotfix.
- Prep for 1.0: Balance changes and new spells arrive October 15; if you play a mage, keep flexible skill points until then.
- Performance: Hotfixes 40 and 41 fixed mining animation desync, rubber-banding for bases near large lakes, and a VFX crash; Keen Games is also targeting lower and mid-range PCs for 1.0. Update your GPU drivers before 1.0 shader compilation.
