A spoiler-light guide to Quantic Dream's Beyond: Two Souls on PC: how Jodie and Aiden play, the chapter structure, key choices, every ending, the "Saved All" checklist and how to clean up achievements with chapter select.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release (June 2020, no content patches since; Steam Trading Cards added October 2021). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You cannot really "lose". Failing an action sequence usually changes what happens next instead of giving you a game over. Play naturally on your first run.
  • Pick your order. The PC version lets you play in the original (cinematic) order, which jumps around Jodie's life, or in chronological order. First-timers should use the original order; it is how the story was written.
  • Two difficulty modes exist. The easier one simplifies controls for people new to games; the other asks for more precise input. Neither changes the story.
  • Switch to Aiden constantly. Aiden is the entity tethered to Jodie. Many scenes have extra objects, secrets and outcomes you only find by floating around as Aiden.
  • Watch the aura colours when playing as Aiden: orange means possess, red means strangle, blue means manipulate (push, break, move), green means heal.
  • In slow-motion action moments, follow Jodie's movement. Push the stick in the direction her body is already moving. There is no on-screen arrow in many of these moments.
  • Advanced Experiments is included. The DLC mission from the PlayStation releases is part of the PC game.
  • Duo mode lets a friend play Aiden. Two controllers, one for Jodie and one for Aiden. Starting any scene in Duo mode unlocks "Two Souls".
  • Do a blind first run, then use chapter select for achievements, missed bonuses and alternate endings.

Who's Who (No Big Spoilers)

Character | Role

Jodie Holmes | Protagonist, played by Elliot Page; linked since birth to Aiden

Aiden | Incorporeal entity bound to Jodie

Nathan Dawkins | Researcher at the Department of Paranormal Activity, Jodie's father figure (Willem Dafoe)

Cole Freeman | Nathan's colleague and friend to young Jodie

Ryan Clayton | CIA agent who works with Jodie

The story spans Jodie's childhood in a DPA research lab, her time with the CIA, life on the streets, a stay with a Navajo family and a climax at a facility tied to the "Infraworld", the realm of the dead.

Controls and Systems

Situation | What to do

Exploration as Jodie | Move freely; a white dot marks things you can interact with; push the stick in the dot's direction

Switch to Aiden | Press the Aiden button; the screen goes monochrome and you float through walls

Aiden: possess (orange) | Take control of that character to open doors, pass through checkpoints, attack others

Aiden: strangle (red) | Kill that character; often has lasting consequences

Aiden: manipulate (blue) | Push, throw, knock over or break objects; distract or open routes

Aiden: heal (green) | Heal a wounded character; critical for "Saved All"

Aiden: shield | Protect Jodie when she is attacked or shot at

Action slow-motion | Push the stick the way Jodie is moving (e.g. forward for a punch, left to dodge left)

Dialogue | Choose a response before the timer runs out; silence is also a choice

Aiden is limited by a tether: you cannot move too far from Jodie, and in some scenes Aiden refuses to cooperate or is blocked by other entities.

Chapter Guide

The game has around two dozen chapters plus the ending sequence. Below are the chapters that matter most for choices and achievements. In the original order they are shuffled across Jodie's life; chronological order lines them up by age.

Chapter | What matters

The Experiment | First time as Aiden ("Somebody Else?"); return to Jodie's body and obey the researcher when prompted ("Obedience")

My Imaginary Friend | Young Jodie and Aiden at home; perform the tricks together

The Embassy | Stealth mission; doing it only as Aiden without possessing anyone gives "Clean Job"

The Party | Teen party; walking out without hurting anyone ("Cold Blood") versus taking revenge on at least three guests or starting a fire ("Revenge") are mutually exclusive in one run

Welcome to the CIA | Training: sneak undetected ("Stealth Apprentice"), pass most drills ("Perfect Soldier"), win fights taking fewer than five hits ("Fight Apprentice")

Hunted | Escape the train and avoid arrest ("Catch Me if You Can"); the town sequence has optional destruction ("Aiden's Apocalypse") and a let-yourself-be-caught route ("Houdini")

Condenser | Shut down the portal ("Portal Shutdown")

Homeless | Earn money for food ("Money to Eat"), disable the supermarket camera ("Smart Thief"), help the group ("Miracles"); save Walter and Jimmy during the fire

Like Other Girls | Protect Jodie from her attackers ("Together Forever")

Alone | Choice about confronting Jodie's father ("Not My Father" if Aiden chokes him)

Navajo | Heal Paul before the ritual (needed for "Saved All"); survive the sandstorm with three or fewer hits ("Not Just Sand")

The Dinner | Date night with Ryan; three separate approaches give "Perfect Lover", "Casual Girl" and "In Love with Ryan"

The Mission | Enter the target building undetected ("Stealth Master")

Norah | Leave the room without killing the woman (needed for "Saved All")

Dragon's Hideout | Interrogation: stay silent ("Eye for an Eye") or tell the truth ("Agent 894732"); control the general to reach the inhibition field ("Almost Too Easy")

Black Sun | Finale: help Cole when he falls, handle Nathan, choose Life or Beyond; finish without dying at the condenser ("Black Sun Down"); reason with Nathan ("Convince Dawkins")

Endings

At the end of Black Sun you face a choice between Life and Beyond.

  • Beyond: Jodie joins Aiden in the Infraworld ("Chose Afterlife").
  • Life: Jodie severs herself from Aiden and lives on ("Chose Life"). You then choose who to be with, based on who survived and your relationships: go it alone, Ryan, the Navajo family (Jay), or Zoey and the homeless group.

"All Endings..." requires seeing every ending. With chapter select you only need to replay Black Sun and pick the other options, but some Life options require the relevant character to be alive and on good terms.

Saved All Checklist

"Saved All" requires keeping every savable character alive in one timeline. Per a detailed walkthrough, they are:

Character | Chapter | How

Walter | Homeless | During the fire, use Aiden to get him up the stairs

Jimmy | Homeless | Help him with Aiden as the fire spreads

Paul | Navajo | Heal the wounded elder with Aiden before the ritual

Norah | Norah | Leave the room without killing her

Cole | Black Sun | Stop and help him up when he trips escaping the entities

Ryan | Black Sun | Avoid cold or blaming responses with Nathan; if you pick those, kill Nathan with Aiden before he shoots Ryan

The opposite achievement, A Better World, needs every important character to die, which you can do by failing or choosing badly in the same scenes and then choosing the Infraworld. Do it on a separate chapter-select pass.

Achievement Strategy

Beyond: Two Souls has 45 Steam achievements. Many are chapter-specific and mutually exclusive, so plan on at least two passes:

  • Blind playthrough in original order. Enjoy it; many story achievements come naturally ("The End" for finishing).
  • Chapter select cleanup for exclusive pairs (Cold Blood/Revenge, the three Dinner outcomes, the two interrogation outcomes, Chose Life/Chose Afterlife, Saved All/A Better World).
  • Duo mode: "Two Souls" for starting one scene; "Together Till the End" is much bigger (the whole game in two-player mode), so decide early whether you will attempt it with a friend.
  • Entities Apprentice/Entities Master: defeat hostile entities as Aiden in the scenes where they attack; do not let them overwhelm you.
  • Uncontrollable: perform every possible mischievous or violent Aiden action across the chapters where they are offered. Easiest on a deliberate chapter-select pass.
  • Explorer: find all bonuses. Bonuses are hidden objects and interactions, many only reachable as Aiden. Search every room with Aiden before moving on.
  • Never Alone: start at least one romance; kiss options appear in several chapters.

A handful of other achievements (for example "Medicine Girl", "Sorry", "Teammates", "Possessive Spy" and "Channeling Master") have hidden descriptions on Steam; they are tied to specific optional actions, so check a full achievement list before your cleanup pass rather than guessing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting for button prompts in slow motion. Watch Jodie's body instead; the correct direction follows her movement.
  • Forgetting Aiden exists. Many bonuses, alternate outcomes and optional kills only exist in Aiden's view.
  • Using Aiden to strangle freely in story-critical scenes. Deaths persist and can close off endings and "Saved All".
  • Replaying from a new save to fix one choice. Use chapter select instead.
  • Starting in chronological order on a first run. It is valid, but the original order was designed to keep the mysteries intact.
  • Assuming the game is over when you fail. Keep playing; failure is usually a different branch.

Advanced Tips

  • Duo mode tip: one player is Jodie and the other is Aiden, so talk through tense scenes before acting; an Aiden player who strangles someone on a whim changes the story for both of you.
  • Chronological order on a second run makes it easier to track relationships (Cole, Nathan, Ryan) that feed into the finale.
  • Silence is a real option. In several dialogue moments, letting the timer run out is a deliberate choice with its own outcome (for example, the Dragon's Hideout interrogation).
  • Advanced Experiments is short and tightly focused on Aiden's powers; play it after the main story if you want more.
  • Controller over keyboard: the directional action inputs are far more natural on a gamepad.

FAQ

How long is Beyond: Two Souls? Roughly 10 hours for a single playthrough; achievement completion takes longer because of chapter-select passes.

What is the difference between original and chronological order? Original order is the non-linear sequence the story was designed around. Chronological order replays the same chapters sorted by Jodie's age.

Can you die in Beyond: Two Souls? Jodie herself effectively cannot die mid-story; failures branch the narrative. Other characters can die permanently in that playthrough.

How many endings are there? The trophy list counts five: the Beyond (Infraworld) ending plus Life endings alone, with Ryan, with Jay's Navajo family, or with Zoey and the homeless group.

Is the Advanced Experiments DLC included on PC? Yes, it is part of the full PC game.

Can I play co-op online? Duo mode is local (two controllers on one PC). There is no built-in online co-op; streaming tools such as Steam Remote Play Together are the usual workaround, but results vary.
