FiveM · Updated Sept 2026
FiveM is the Cfx.re multiplayer platform for GTA V (Rockstar owns it now) that runs custom community servers. It's where nearly all GTA roleplay happens. This guide is for players: what you need, how to get in, how to pick a server, the RP rules and slang you'll hear on day one, and what to try when the client won't launch.
What you need
A legit, up-to-date copy of GTA V
FiveM checks that you own GTA V and won't work with a pirated copy. The official docs list Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Rockstar Store, Amazon and the Xbox Store as supported places to buy it. Keep the game fully updated before you launch FiveM. A stale install is one of the most common reasons it won't start.
Legacy or Enhanced?
GTA V on PC now comes in two editions, and FiveM has a separate client for each:
FiveM (Legacy) | FiveM for GTAV Enhanced
Needs | Grand Theft Auto V Legacy | Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced
Status | The original, mature client | Early Access since July 21, 2026
Hardware | Lower requirements (4 GB RAM min, 8 GB recommended) | Much higher (8 GB RAM and a 4 GB GPU minimum; 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3060-class card recommended)
Download | FiveM.exe from fivem.net | Its own installer, also on fivem.net
Cfx.re isn't retiring Legacy, so you don't have to switch. Server owners run either the Legacy or the Enhanced server files, which means the server you want to play on decides which client you need. Most established RP communities are still on Legacy right now. Check the server's Discord or website before you download anything.
Tip: If you bought GTA V on Steam, you already own both editions. Enhanced is a separate entry in your Steam library. Install whichever one your server needs, and keep it updated through Steam.
Enhanced is Early Access, so expect bugs and frequent patches. Cfx.re posts patch notes and collects bug reports in the citizenfx GitHub discussions. FiveM for GTAV Enhanced also only supports the latest GTA V game build, so update the game first whenever Rockstar patches it.
A PC that can handle it
Roleplay servers stream in a lot of custom cars, clothing and map edits, so they're heavier than GTA Online. Aim for the recommended specs above, not the minimum. You also need roughly 110–135 GB of free space for the game, plus room for server downloads.
Installing and launching
- Install and update GTA V (the edition your server uses). Launch it once through its normal launcher so that updates and the Rockstar sign-in are sorted out.
- Download FiveM from fivem.net. Pick the Legacy download or the Enhanced installer.
- Run the installer. The docs say to install either into an empty folder you choose or into the default location, %localappdata%\FiveM. Don't install it inside your GTA V folder.
- Launch FiveM from the Start menu. The first launch downloads a lot of files and verifies that you own GTA V through your Rockstar account.
- When the main menu loads, open the server browser, or use a direct-connect link from your server's Discord.
About Steam: FiveM also has a Steam listing (app 2676230). The official install docs still describe the download from fivem.net. Whichever route you use, your GTA V copy must be installed and up to date for FiveM to find it.
If your antivirus flags or quarantines FiveM files during install, Cfx.re's advice is to file a support ticket. Don't just hunt for random workarounds.
Picking a server
This choice matters more than anything else about your first week. Servers differ massively in rules, economy, scripts and community culture.
Whitelisted vs public
- Public servers let anyone join straight from the server browser. They're great for learning the basics with no commitment. RP quality varies a lot, though, and you'll run into more trolls.
- Whitelisted servers make you apply before you can join. That usually means an application form or interview through their Discord. The standard of roleplay is higher, rule enforcement is stricter, and there's often a waitlist.
- Some servers sit in between. They're open to join, but certain jobs (police, EMS, gangs) need a separate application.
How to evaluate one
- Join the Discord first. Almost every RP server runs its community, rules, applications and support through Discord.
- Read the rules, all of them. Every server defines its own version of the terms below, plus rules on things like how many cops are needed before a robbery, stream sniping, and combat logging. "I didn't know" won't save you from a ban.
- Check the server's region and language so your ping and the community work for you.
- Watch a few streams or clips from the server to see if its vibe (serious, chaotic, crime-heavy, civilian-focused) fits what you want.
- Check which client it uses (Legacy or Enhanced) and whether it requires anything else, like a working mic or a minimum age.
Writing a whitelist application
- Answer every question in full sentences. Rushed one-liners get rejected.
- When they ask about rules or terms (they often do), answer in your own words and show you understand why the rule exists.
- Give a character backstory that's grounded. An ex-special-forces billionaire assassin is a red flag. A tow-truck driver with gambling debts is a story.
- Be patient. Don't ping staff about your application's status.
RP etiquette and the terms you'll hear
Roleplay only works if everyone commits to the fiction. Most server rules come down to a few ideas: stay in character, don't use information your character wouldn't have, give other people a fair chance to react, and value your character's life.
Term | What it means
IC (In Character) | Anything your character says or does inside the story.
OOC (Out Of Character) | You, the real person. Most servers want OOC talk kept out of the game and moved to Discord or a dedicated OOC chat, used sparingly.
Metagaming | Using information your character couldn't know IC, like something you saw on a stream, heard in Discord or read in OOC chat.
Powergaming | Forcing an outcome on someone without giving them a chance to respond, or doing things that are impossible in real life (like surviving an unsurvivable crash with no injury RP).
Fear RP | Acting like your life matters. If someone has a gun on you, you comply rather than pull out a phone or run straight at them.
NLR (New Life Rule) | After you "die" and respawn, you forget the events leading to your death and don't go back to that scene. Exact timers and details vary by server.
RDM (Random Deathmatch) | Attacking or killing someone with no roleplay reason or lead-up.
VDM (Vehicle Deathmatch) | Using a vehicle as a weapon without RP justification, like running people over for fun.
PK / CK | Player Kill (you lose recent memories) vs Character Kill (the character is permanently dead). How and when a CK can happen is set by each server's rules.
Combat logging | Disconnecting to escape a bad situation. It's almost universally banned.
Breaking character | Dropping out of the fiction mid-scene. Avoid it. If something is genuinely wrong, finish the scene and report it afterwards.
Golden rule: If someone breaks a rule against you, don't break character to argue in-game. Finish the scene, clip it if you can, and report it through the server's official channels (usually a Discord ticket). Arguing mid-scene just ruins it for everyone else too.
Everyday etiquette
- Use a decent mic and push-to-talk, and keep background noise down. Voice is how most RP happens.
- Let scenes breathe. Not every interaction needs to escalate into violence. Some of the best RP is a traffic stop or an argument at a burger stand.
- Losing is content. Getting arrested, robbed or outsmarted often creates better stories than winning.
- Don't use cheats or mod menus. They get you banned from servers, and can get you banned from FiveM itself.
Making your first character
Most servers drop you into a character-creation screen the first time you join. The menus differ from server to server because each one runs its own scripts, but the thinking behind a good character doesn't change:
- Start ordinary. A new-in-town mechanic, delivery driver or cab driver gives you a reason to meet people and learn the city, its jobs and its economy.
- Give them one want and one flaw. "Wants to own a garage, can't stop gambling" is a whole arc. You don't need a novel.
- Pick a realistic name. Joke names and streamer references are usually against the rules.
- Know what they don't know. A fresh character hasn't heard of the city's gangs or famous cops. Roleplay learning it all.
- Take a legal job first. It teaches you the server's controls, map and economy without risking your character in a shootout on day one.
- Let them change. Plans rarely survive contact with other players, and that's the point.
Keybinds for phones, inventories, emotes and so on are server-specific. Look for a guide or "new player" channel in the server's Discord, and ask OOC there rather than in-game.
Troubleshooting common launch issues
These fixes come from Cfx.re's official client issues page and are the usual first steps. Before you try anything, close FiveM completely: check Task Manager for leftover FiveM processes and end them.
Clearing the cache
If a server won't load, keeps crashing while it downloads resources, or acts strangely after an update, try a cache reset:
- Press Win + R and open %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data
- Rename (or delete) the cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv folders if they're there. Renaming them, for example to cache.old, lets you undo it.
- Relaunch FiveM and let it re-download what it needs. The first join afterwards will be slower.
Don't delete your whole FiveM folder or anything in your GTA V install as a "cache clear". A cache reset won't fix a broken server resource or a bad driver either. If only one server has problems, ask that server's staff.
Delete caches.xml from your FiveM application data folder and relaunch. If that file isn't there, the official fix is to delete the application data folder entirely and relaunch FiveM so it rebuilds.
If the component is adhesive.dll specifically, your Windows is too old. Run winver to check your version and update Windows.
Delete %appdata%\citizenfx\ros_id.dat and the %localappdata%\digitalentitlements folder, then relaunch.
This is often caused by aggressive antivirus software. Cfx.re recommends filing a support ticket rather than disabling your protection wholesale.
Another FiveM process is still running and holding the file. End leftover FiveM processes in Task Manager and try again. If it keeps happening, your antivirus is likely involved, so open a support ticket.
Leftover DLLs from other software can hijack FiveM's loading. Per the official docs, delete v8.dll, v8_libbase.dll and v8_libplatform.dll from C:\Windows\system32 if they're present. Don't delete anything else there.
- Update GTA V and launch it once normally. An outdated game is a frequent cause, especially on Enhanced, which only supports the latest game build.
- Make sure you're using the right client (Legacy or Enhanced) for the GTA V edition you have installed.
- Search the Cfx.re forum for your exact error text, or open a ticket at support.cfx.re.
Quick checklist
- Own a legit copy of GTA V and keep it fully updated.
- Find out whether your server runs Legacy or Enhanced (Early Access), and install that edition plus the matching FiveM client from fivem.net.
- Install FiveM into an empty folder or the default %localappdata%\FiveM, not into your GTA folder.
- Join the server's Discord, read every rule, and apply if it's whitelisted.
- Learn the basics: IC/OOC, metagaming, powergaming, fear RP, NLR, RDM/VDM.
- Start with a grounded character and a legal job.
- Stay in character, and report rule breaks through the server's ticket system after the scene.
- Launch problems? Close FiveM fully, reset the cache, then check the official client issues page.
