Your Only Move Is HUSTLE: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

How to think in YOMI Hustle's turn-based, frame-by-frame fights: reading the preview, planning combos, defense, the five base characters, online lobbies, customization and mods.

What Kind of Game Is This?

Your Only Move Is HUSTLE (YOMIH) is a turn-based fighting game. Both players pick an action at the same time, then the game simulates a few frames, pauses, and asks again. There's no execution barrier: you'll land every combo you plan. The skill is in prediction (reading your opponent) and planning (knowing what your options do frame by frame).

It's made by solo developer Ivy Sly, has no paid DLC, and all customization is free. There are hundreds of community-made characters on the Steam Workshop (the developer noted over 700 in late 2024).

Quick Start

  1. Play singleplayer vs. yourself first. Control both characters to learn what moves do without pressure.
  2. Use the preview. When you pick a move, the game shows a ghost of what will happen. Scrub through it before locking in.
  3. Every move has startup, active and recovery frames. Faster startup beats slower startup; long recovery gets punished.
  4. You can't mash out. If you're hit, you're in a combo until it ends, you choose good DI, or you spend a burst.
  5. DI (directional influence) matters. When hit, choose a direction to change how you get knocked back. Good DI escapes combos and walls.
  6. Meter wins games. Super meter powers stronger moves; burst meter lets you escape combos. Don't waste either.
  7. Mix up. Online players read patterns quickly; vary your approaches and defense.
  8. Watch replays. Saved replays let you review your mistakes and, since 1.10.0, resume interrupted matches.
  9. Pick one character and learn their neutral tools before trying all five.
  10. Turn off mods before a big update; the developer warned that updates can break mods.

How a Turn Works

  1. Both players see the current state.
  2. Each picks an action (a move, movement with a chosen direction, or a defensive option), plus any options that move allows (direction, angle, feint where available).
  3. Players lock in; the game plays out the frames until the next decision point.
  4. If someone gets hit, they enter hitstun and may only choose limited options (DI, burst if they have meter) until they recover.

Because both players act simultaneously, the core game is Rock-Paper-Scissors with information: every option beats some options and loses to others, and the preview helps you see exactly what yours does.

The Characters

Five base characters ship with the game; a sixth has been planned by the developer but wasn't in development as of May 2026.

Character General playstyle
Ninja Very mobile rushdown; grappling hook and projectile tools control space and close distance fast
Cowboy Hybrid: a gun with limited bullets for zoning and punishes, plus a sword and lasso for close-range pressure
Wizard Zoner: floats and controls space with spells and projectiles; strong when left alone at range
Robot Heavy, slow, powerful: big damage and strong grabs, but needs to earn the approach
Mutant Aggressive and feral: fast movement and relentless close-range pressure (got balance changes and a new move in 1.10.0)

Beginner tips by character:

A few real move names worth knowing (they appear in Steam achievements): Ninja's Palm Strike, Cowboy's Impale, Wizard's Spark Bomb (which can also launch Wizard himself), and Robot's COMMAND: GRAB, which you can combo after.

Meter, Hustle and Sadness

Achievements Worth Chasing

Achievement How to get it
Playing Chess With Yourself Finish a singleplayer match
Stylish Create and save a custom style
Very Super Jump Launch yourself with Wizard's Spark Bomb
Your Only Move Use Hustle to gain a level of super meter in a multiplayer match
Unfair Combo out of Burst (not Burst Cancel)
Relentless Land a 20-hit combo in a multiplayer match
Touch of Death Land a full-health combo on default damage, hitstun, cancel and resource settings
Your Many Wins in Hustle Win 50 multiplayer games

Most can be set up with a friend in a private lobby; Touch of Death is the real skill check, so lab the route in singleplayer first.

Modes

Mode What it's for
Singleplayer Control both fighters: labbing, choreographing fight scenes, testing combos
Multiplayer lobbies Play friends or strangers online; spectate matches
Replays Watch, share and (since 1.10.0) challenge someone from a saved replay to resume an interrupted match

The game's pitch is equal parts competitive PvP and cinematic sandbox. Many players spend as much time making fight scenes as climbing lobbies.
