World War Z: Aftermath: Complete Guide

A practical guide to World War Z (including the Aftermath content): classes, special zombies, weapons and upgrades, difficulty progression, Horde Mode Z, and team tactics, plus what's coming with the October 2026 update.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Limitless Strain update (June 2026), the June 30, 2026 hotfix, and the announced Waves of Lead update (October 5, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. It's a 4-player co-op horde shooter. Bots fill empty slots, but human teammates are far better on higher difficulties.
  2. Pick a class and stick with it early. Classes level up separately, and each level unlocks perks. A leveled class is dramatically stronger than a fresh one.
  3. Mission rewards buy your upgrades. Every mission pays out currency and XP that you spend on class perks and weapon upgrades. Saber's bonus events boost the Blue and Yellow Coins alongside XP, so those weekends are the time to grind.
  4. Special zombies are the real threat. The horde is dangerous in numbers, but Bulls, Screamers, Gasbags, Lurkers, and Infectors are what wipe teams. Learn to spot and prioritize them.
  5. Use the level's defenses. Many missions give you turrets, barbed wire, and mines before big swarm events. Set them up before the horde arrives.
  6. Stick together. Revives and shared fire lanes matter more than personal kills.
  7. Climb difficulty slowly. Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane, and Extreme scale enemy damage and specials. Don't jump into Insane with an unleveled class.
  8. Watch for bonus events. Saber runs frequent Double XP events with 1.5x Blue and Yellow Coins. The latest ran for the Aftermath 5th anniversary until September 22, 2026.

Classes

There are eight classes: Gunslinger, Hellraiser, Slasher, Medic, Fixer, Exterminator, Dronemaster, and Vanguard (added in Aftermath). Each has its own perk tree, starting loadout, and a signature ability or item.

Class Role Best at
Gunslinger Ranged DPS Consistent gun damage and ammo efficiency
Hellraiser Explosives Clearing swarms and choke points with explosives
Slasher Melee Close-range crowd control, fighting at the wall
Medic Healer Keeping the team alive and reviving, vital on high difficulties
Fixer Support / ammo Ammo and supplies for the team, explosives support
Exterminator Crowd control Area denial, thinning hordes
Dronemaster Support / utility A drone that helps teammates and scouts
Vanguard Defense (Aftermath) Shield-based frontline that holds lines and protects allies

Beginner picks:

Perk trees: each level unlocks a choice. You buy perks with the currency you earn from missions, and many perks come in pairs where you choose one. Read them. Some change your playstyle, like explosive or melee focus.

Special Zombies

Special What it does How to handle it
Bull Armored charger that grabs and slams a survivor Dodge sideways and focus fire on it. Explosives help.
Screamer Calls in more hordes while alive Kill it immediately. It's the top priority.
Gasbag Releases toxic gas Kill it at range. Don't fight inside the cloud.
Lurker Hides, then pounces and pins a survivor Teammates must free the pinned player fast
Infector A later-added special whose attacks infect survivors Keep your distance, focus fire, and get infected teammates healed
Rat swarms Rodent hordes in the Aftermath episodes Area damage and fire

Rule: call out specials on voice or with pings. Most wipes start with a Screamer left alive or a Bull catching someone alone.

Special priority order

When several specials show up at once, kill them in roughly this order:

  1. Screamer. Every second it lives means more zombies.
  2. Anything pinning a teammate (Lurker, Bull mid-slam). A pinned player takes constant damage and can't shoot.
  3. Gasbag, before it gets close enough to gas your position. Shoot it at range so the cloud lands away from you.
  4. Bull, once nobody is pinned. It's a damage sponge, so pour explosives and focused fire into it while dodging its charge.
  5. Infector, and everything else.

Spread the job: one player (often the Gunslinger) watches for Screamers and Gasbags at range while the rest hold the horde.

Campaign tips:

PvPvZ

World War Z has five competitive modes built around two player teams fighting each other while the zombie horde attacks both. The swarm is a third player: fighting where the horde is already hitting the enemy team is often worth more than a straight gunfight. Treat it as a side mode. The co-op campaign and Horde Mode Z are where the playerbase and the updates are.

Horde Mode Z

Horde tips:

Difficulty Progression

Difficulty Who it's for
Easy / Normal Learning maps, leveling a new class
Hard Leveled classes with upgraded weapons
Insane Coordinated teams, high-level perks
Extreme Max-level classes, tight teamwork, voice comms

Leveling tip: play the highest difficulty you can clear reliably. Failing an Insane run is worse than clearing Hard. Save the XP-boost weekends (Double XP events) for grinding new classes.
