Watch_Dogs: Complete Guide

A player's guide to Watch_Dogs (2014) on PC: how hacking, Focus and the skill tree actually work, what to do first in Chicago, how to finish every side activity and achievement, and the Bad Blood DLC.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch plus the February 2025 Steam achievements update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Unlock ctOS towers early. Each district's ctOS tower works like an Ubisoft viewpoint. It reveals map icons and side activities, and it opens up more of the city to your hacks. The towers are small puzzle levels, so taking them early makes everything after easier.
  2. Profile everyone. The Profiler shows each pedestrian's name, income and a one-line secret. Some have hackable bank accounts (cash you pick up at ATMs), songs, car unlocks or crime tips. Check them while you walk around.
  3. Put skill points into hacking first. Blackouts, road blockers and hacking enemy gear matter much more than extra gun damage. You'll start leaning on the city itself early in Act 1.
  4. Craft all the time. Components from shops and loot turn into gadgets like Lures, Jammers, IEDs and Blackouts. A single Blackout gets you out of most night-time police chases.
  5. Avoid civilians when you shoot. Your reputation moves between vigilante and outlaw. Killing or hurting bystanders drops it and makes civilians more likely to report you.
  6. Escape chases with the city, not your speed. Raise bridges, pop steam pipes, set traffic lights to cause pileups and trigger road blockers once you've passed them.
  7. Hide inside the police scan circle. During a scan, get out of sight lines or duck in a parked car. Just driving away tends to trigger a full chase.
  8. Focus is your panic button. It slows time for aimed shots and it recharges. The Magic Smoke achievement is 4 kills in one Focus activation.
  9. Online invasions are optional. Online Hacking and Online Tailing let other players invade you. You can turn off online contracts in the options if you just want the story.

Core Systems

Hacking

Aiden's phone hacks almost anything connected to ctOS:

Target What it does Best use
Traffic lights Turn all lights green, causing crossing traffic to crash Blocking pursuers at intersections
Road blockers / bollards Raise blockers out of the road Stopping a car right behind you
Steam pipes / underground Blow up the road surface Taking out pursuing cars, or ambushes
Bridges Raise a drawbridge Jumping the gap and losing the police
Barriers / gates Open or close them Shortcuts and chokepoints
Cameras Jump from camera to camera Scouting and hacking into restricted areas without walking in
Enemy gear Detonate grenades, jam communications Taking out groups without firing
Blackout Kills power across the area Breaking line of sight at night
Train Stop an L train Boarding or blocking

Camera hopping is the core stealth trick. Hack a camera, then use it to reach cameras you can see from there. You can often clear a hideout's objectives this way, or tag every guard, without ever going inside.

Focus

Focus is a slow-motion meter that fills while you play and drains while it's active. Use it for aimed shooting in combat and for split-second hacks while driving. Skill tree upgrades make the meter bigger and let it recharge from takedowns and headshots.

Profiler, Money and Reputation

Skill Tree

Skill points come from story and side missions, and specific skills unlock from some activities. The tree has groups for Hacking, Combat, Driving and Crafting, plus skills tied to missions and activities. The Freeware achievement asks you to unlock every skill. Suggested order:

  1. Hacking first: blackouts, road blockers, steam pipes, and hacks for enemy grenades and communications.
  2. Focus upgrades: a bigger meter and faster recharge.
  3. Driving hacks and car handling: these make chases and convoys much easier.
  4. Crafting: unlock recipes for the gadgets you actually use.
  5. Combat: weapon handling and takedowns come last. Hacks do most of the damage anyway.

Crafting

Components come from shops and loot. Recipes unlock through the skill tree. Useful gadgets:

Story Structure

The campaign has five acts. There's an achievement for finishing each one: Family Man, Who Is Raymond Kenney?, One Down, One to Go, Vengeance, and Log Off. Early on, Hello World is for taking down Maurice.

Spoiler-light notes:

Nothing you need for 100% gets locked by the story. You can finish side content after the credits in free roam.

Side Activities Checklist

Activity Achievement Tips
ctOS Towers Clear Signals Do them first. Several are camera-chain puzzles.
ctOS Breaches System Mangler Stealth hacking into control centres. Tag guards through cameras before moving.
Gang Hideouts Basest Base Some need a non-lethal takedown on the leader. Use Lures and silenced weapons.
Criminal Convoys Road Rage Stop the target car first. Road blockers and steam pipes ahead of the convoy do most of the work. Then deal with the leader as the objective asks.
Fixer Contracts End of Line (40 contracts) Driving, getaway and delivery jobs. They're good money.
Crime Detection Enforcer (20 criminals) Take the criminal down without killing them.
Investigations: Missing Persons Darkness Looms A serial-killer storyline and one of the best side stories in the game
Investigations: Weapons Trade Saturday Night Special
Investigations: Human Traffic Revoking Client Privileges
Investigations: QR Codes Read-only Many need a specific camera angle to line up the code
All investigations They Call Him The Vigilante
Burner Phones Sanity Check (all 8)
Privacy Invasions Peephole Hack into apartments through cameras
Hotspots Geolocated Check in at each one
City Games Power Cycle (5 different games) Includes the Drinking Game. Social Lubricant is level 10 against all 3 opponents
SongSneak Disk Space Full Profile music playing near pedestrians
Digital Trips None Surreal minigames from the phone app, including Spider-Tank and Madness. Great for a break.

Chase and Combat Achievements

Online Modes

These need Ubisoft's online services:

Mode How it works Achievement
Online Hacking Invade another player's game and hack their phone without being found Hackification (10)
Online Tailing Follow and observe another player without being detected Piggyback (10), Stealth Cookie
Being tailed Happens to you when invasions are on Traced (5)
Online Races Public races against other players Superhighway (10)
Decryption Team mode where you grab and hold data None
Free Roam Open city with other players None

Invasion tips: As the invader, blend in. Walk, sit in a parked car, or stand in a crowd so you look like an NPC. As the defender, use the Profiler to scan the area, because the invader is the NPC with a real player's name. If online modes are empty, which is common in 2026, try at peak hours or use Discord/Steam groups to find people.

Bad Blood DLC (T-Bone)

Bad Blood is a separate story campaign starring Raymond "T-Bone" Kenney. It's set about a year after the main game. T-Bone has an RC car that can go through vents and gaps and hack things Aiden can't reach, and it can be blown up. There are ten story missions over three acts: Friends in Need, No Easy Fix and Pest Control. After that come contract lines, some of them co-op.

Achievement Requirement
T-Bone: Looking For Trouble Complete all side investigations
T-Bone: Mob Ruled 20 Chicago South Club contracts
T-Bone: Second Amendment 20 Militia contracts
T-Bone: Unfixable 20 Fixer contracts
T-Bone: Full Circuit 29 driving missions
T-Bone: Negative Eugenics Kill 4 enemies at once by blowing up the RC car
T-Bone: Tag Team 10 co-op missions

For Negative Eugenics, drive the RC car into a tight group of guards that haven't spotted it yet, then detonate. Luring them together first helps.

FAQ

Does Watch_Dogs still need Ubisoft Connect on Steam? Yes. The Steam version launches through Ubisoft Connect and needs a Ubisoft account. Online modes also depend on Ubisoft's servers.

Are there Steam achievements now? Yes. Since 4 February 2025 there are 49. Launch the game once to sync any you already earned on Ubisoft Connect.

Can I 100% the game after the ending? Yes. You go back to free roam after the credits, and side activities stay available.

Does the ending choice matter? Not for gameplay. The final kill/spare choice with Maurice only changes the scene.

How do I escape a level 5 chase? Do it at night. Use a Blackout, bridges, road blockers and steam pipes. Then switch cars or hide once you're out of sight, and wait out the search circle.

Can I play without being invaded? Yes. Turn off online invasions/contracts in the online options and nobody can hack or tail you.

Is Bad Blood worth it? If you liked the base game, yes. The RC car changes how you approach stealth, and T-Bone's contracts add a lot of extra content.
