# Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm: Complete Guide

A guide to Dawn of War – Soulstorm (March 2008), the third and final expansion to Relic's original Dawn of War, developed by Iron Lore Entertainment: the resource system, all nine factions, openings, the Kaurava conquest campaign, multiplayer and the mods that keep it alive.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the final official patch of the classic release, plus the August 2025 Definitive Edition (see below). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Version note:** The standalone Soulstorm store page is now **unlisted on Steam** at the publisher's request (existing owners keep it; the page can only be reached by direct link). On **14 August 2025** Relic released **Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition**, which bundles the base game, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm with all nine factions, four campaigns, 100+ multiplayer maps, 64-bit support, 4x-resolution textures, better pathfinding, a 4K/widescreen-friendly camera and an integrated mod manager. Owners of the classic Anniversary Edition get a 30% upgrade discount. Everything below applies to Soulstorm's content in either version; if you are buying today, the Definitive Edition is the version to get.

## Quick Start

1. **It's standalone.** Soulstorm runs on its own and includes all nine armies for skirmish and multiplayer. The campaign uses the Dark Crusade-style conquest meta-map, expanded to a whole star system.
2. **Capture points fast.** Requisition comes from Strategic Points, Relics and Critical Locations on the map. Your builders and first squads should grab them immediately.
3. **Build Listening Posts** on captured points. They defend the point and upgrading them increases income.
4. **Build power generators.** Power is the second resource; generators on Slag Deposits give extra power.
5. **Reinforce squads instead of rebuilding.** Adding models to an existing squad is cheaper and faster than a new squad.
6. **Morale matters.** Squads with broken morale fight poorly. Use leaders, commanders and upgrades to keep morale up and use suppression and heavy weapons to break the enemy's.
7. **Melee vs ranged.** Pick fights your units are good at. Tie up enemy shooters in melee; keep your shooters away from assault troops.
8. **Tech through your HQ and key buildings.** Each faction has tiers unlocked by upgrading its HQ and building tech structures.
9. **Soulstorm adds flyers.** Every army gains an air unit. Bring anti-air in the late game.

## Resources

| Resource | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Requisition | Strategic Points, Relics, Critical Locations | Main resource; income scales with points held and Listening Post upgrades |
| Power | Generators (bonus on Slag Deposits) | Needed for tech, vehicles and heavy units |
| Faction-specific | See faction table | Some armies track population or special meters differently |

### Economy rules of thumb

- Hold more points than your enemy — the requisition gap snowballs.
- Build Listening Posts on exposed points and upgrade those at home.
- Power: build generators steadily; don't let power starve your tier-up.
- Don't float resources. Spend on units, upgrades and reinforcement.

## The Nine Factions

| Faction | Style | Beginner notes |
|---|---|---|
| Space Marines | Elite, flexible infantry and vehicles | Great first faction; forgiving and versatile |
| Chaos | Aggressive infantry, daemons and dark psychic powers | Strong melee and debuffs |
| Orks | Numbers, melee and a unique population system tied to Waaagh! banners | Snowbally; swarm and overwhelm |
| Eldar | Fast, fragile, advanced tech and teleports | High skill cap |
| Imperial Guard | Massed infantry, strong artillery and tanks | Good for defensive, gunline play |
| Tau Empire | Superior ranged firepower, weak melee, Kroot auxiliaries | Keep enemies at range |
| Necrons | Slow, durable, power-based economy (they don't use requisition like others) | Unique; hard to kill, strong late |
| Sisters of Battle (new) | Faith-powered, ranged elite infantry, zealots and the Penitent Engine | Faith fuels special abilities |
| Dark Eldar (new) | Fast raiders, melee, stuns and poisons | Hit-and-run; harvest souls for powers |

### Soulstorm's new armies

- **Sisters of Battle:** "limited in numbers but incredibly powerful." Units include Sisters Repentia with eviscerators and the Penitent Engine. Their Faith resource powers acts and abilities.
- **Dark Eldar:** "incredible speed, reliance on close quarter combat and stunning and poisoning abilities" — strike quickly and leave before reinforcements arrive. They collect soul essence from casualties to power special abilities.

## Openings

Each faction differs, but a typical opening looks like this:

1. **HQ builds builders** (servitors, slaves, grots and so on, depending on faction) — usually two or three early.
2. **Builders make the first production building** and a generator.
3. **First infantry squads** capture strategic points immediately.
4. **Listening Posts** on captured points.
5. **Second production building** or tech building once income stabilizes.
6. **Commander or hero** for early fights (for most factions).
7. **First HQ tier-up** once you control your share of the map.

### Opening priorities

- **Map control first.** Early squads should be capping, not idling.
- **Harass enemy builders and capture squads.**
- **Get a commander/hero** — heroes carry early fights and inspire morale.
- **Decide tech early:** rushing tier 2 for vehicles vs spamming tier 1 infantry depends on your army and your opponent.

## Combat Mechanics

- **Morale:** Most squads have a morale bar. Suppression (heavy bolters, machine guns) and fear effects drop it; broken squads deal less damage and retreat. Leaders and certain upgrades restore it.
- **Retreat:** You can order a squad to fall back to base, where it's safe to reinforce. Retreating early saves squads (and the resources in them).
- **Melee vs ranged:** Melee units lock ranged units into combat, neutralizing their guns.
- **Weapon upgrades:** Squads can equip heavy or special weapons. Mix anti-infantry and anti-vehicle weapons.
- **Vehicles:** Resistant to small arms; need dedicated anti-vehicle weapons.
- **Cover:** Green (heavy) cover reduces damage; red (negative) cover increases it. Position squads in good cover.
- **Relics:** Holding them boosts income and unlocks some top-tier units.

## The Soulstorm Campaign

The campaign is a turn-based, Risk-style meta-map conquest of the Kaurava system: 31 territories spread over four planets and three moons (the store page counts 34 maps in total across the expansion). You choose one of the nine factions and fight the others for control.

### How it works

- **Take territories** on the meta-map. Each territory gives a bonus.
- **Battles** play out as RTS skirmishes, with custom objectives for special territories.
- **Strongholds** — each faction's home base is a special, heavily defended mission. Defeating them eliminates that faction.
- **Honor Guard** units — territory victories give you veteran units that carry over into battles.
- **Commander wargear** — your hero unlocks new weapons, items and abilities as you progress.
- **Interplanetary travel** — you move your forces between planets and moons.

### Campaign tips

- **Defend your weakest territories** — the AI attacks where you're thin.
- **Take territories that give useful bonuses** (extra resources, reinforcements or strategic abilities).
- **Build your Honor Guard** — they make stronghold missions much easier.
- **Attack strongholds only when ready**; they're far harder than normal battles.
- **Space Marines or Imperial Guard** are gentle starting campaigns; Necrons and Dark Eldar are more advanced.

## Multiplayer and Community

- The game supports skirmish vs AI, LAN and online multiplayer. The classic release originally matched players through GameSpy, which shut down in 2014; the Definitive Edition is the currently supported version for online play. For the classic version, check community hubs and Discord servers for current ways to find matches.
- The **skirmish AI** is okay but beatable; community AI mods make it much tougher.

### Popular community mods

| Mod | What it does |
|---|---|
| Unification | Adds many more Warhammer 40,000 factions to Soulstorm |
| Ultimate Apocalypse | Large-scale overhaul with titans and huge battles |
| Soulstorm Bugfix Mod | Community fix pack (2013) for bugs left after official patch support ended |
| Skirmish AI mods | Community AI replacements that make skirmish opponents much tougher |

On the classic 32-bit release, big mods often need a large-address-aware (4GB) patch to avoid memory crashes; each mod's install instructions cover this. The Definitive Edition is 64-bit and has an integrated mod manager, but classic mods are not guaranteed to work on it unchanged — check each mod's page for which version it supports. Always back up the game folder before installing mods.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Slow capping.** Losing the early point race loses the game.
- **Rebuilding squads instead of reinforcing** — reinforcing is cheaper and faster.
- **Letting squads die.** Retreat them at low health and reinforce.
- **Ignoring morale.** A broken squad does little damage.
- **No anti-vehicle.** Once tanks appear, small arms won't cut it.
- **No anti-air late.** Soulstorm's flyers punish armies without it.
- **Building too many generators early.** Balance power with requisition.
- **Overextending heroes.** Losing your commander hurts morale and momentum.

## Advanced Tips

- **Tie up enemy ranged squads in melee** with assault units.
- **Use suppression** to pin enemy infantry, then flank.
- **Relic control** unlocks top-tier units — contest relics hard.
- **Retreat micro** — pulling a squad at the right moment saves more than winning a fight.
- **Use cover** aggressively; move squads into green cover before engaging.
- **Learn faction matchups.** Tau and Imperial Guard want range; Orks and Dark Eldar want to close fast.
- **Watch replays** of your own games to spot idle time and lost squads.

## FAQ

**Do I need the original Dawn of War to play Soulstorm?**
No. Soulstorm is standalone.

**How many factions are there?**
Nine: Space Marines, Chaos, Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Tau Empire, Necrons, Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar.

**Is Soulstorm's campaign better than Dark Crusade's?**
Many players prefer Dark Crusade's campaign; Soulstorm's is bigger (a whole star system) and includes all nine factions.

**Can I still play multiplayer?**
Yes, but the population is small and depends on community hubs. Skirmish vs AI and mods are the main way people play.

**What's the best mod?**
Unification for more factions; Ultimate Apocalypse for massive battles; a community skirmish AI mod for tougher AI.

**Should I buy Soulstorm or the Definitive Edition?**
The Definitive Edition (August 2025). The standalone Soulstorm page is unlisted on Steam, and the Definitive Edition includes Soulstorm plus the base game, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade with modern-PC improvements.

**Is Soulstorm the last Dawn of War 1 expansion?**
Yes, it was the third and final expansion. Dawn of War II (2009) and Dawn of War III (2017) followed.
